Title: A Fanime...Cruise?
Post by: heeroyuy135 on May 31, 2008, 10:27:01 AM
So I googled Fanime, and on the 4th search result, I found this:
http://www.fanimecruises.com/
Apparently it's like a convention on a cruise ship...thoughts?

That's really cool, but is it officially affiliated with Fanime in any capacity? Something about it seems fishy to me. The website doesn't look terribly professional, the fact that it got postponed seems weird..

After watching the movie Posiden, I'm afraid of cruises. And if anything happens, I can't swim. :P

It's sort of legit...they had commericals during episodes of Anime TV (yeah, that one).

The idea sounds rather interesting. It WOULD be cool to have something like that I'll admit...

As a note, FanimeCruises is in no way associated with FanimeCon or ARG.

Carry on.  :)

It's a trap done by AX or something to sink the ship and kill all Fanime goers or something!

Now you see why I blame AX.
...anyway. This does look strange. Either a scam or somebody ripping off the fanime name in order to pull of a half assed attempt at a con.

That site has been there for well over a year by now.  I see lots of groups using "Fanime" all over the place.  It's an obvious name to choose for any fans of anime.

Good luck w/ this one.

1) I can't think of any Cruise line company that would be willing to book out a chunk of their rooms let alone an entire ship to cater to Otakus
2) The cost of running a ship even for a few days is every expensive. And with the loss of Alcohol sales, offshore casino (oh yeah there's a huge casino on board) and off shore excursions any cruise line company would drop seriously in the red for this one
3) Cruises can be expensive on their own. Here's one of the cheaper cruise  (http://tinyurl.com/5fuw4e) lines set for a cruise in the off season (October)
4) Security issues .. we have enough problem with glomping signs, weapons issues and rabid fan-girls/guys on land. 6 miles out at sea = nightmare
5) Medical issues - nuff said
6) Most cruise lines require that the patrons be over the age of 25 unless accompanied by a parent OR be married if over 18(or 21 I forget which) aka the liability issues are off the charts

Not saying it's a bad idea just saying theres a better chance of Spaceballs II coming out.

Money is money, whether it's from an otaku or anybody else.  Many geeks are otaku, and geeks have done very well financially in the last decade.

Quote2) The cost of running a ship even for a few days is every expensive. And with the loss of Alcohol sales, offshore casino (oh yeah there's a huge casino on board) and off shore excursions any cruise line company would drop seriously in the red for this one
Geeks drink and gamble too.

Quote3) Cruises can be expensive on their own. Here's one of the cheaper cruise  (http://tinyurl.com/5fuw4e) lines set for a cruise in the off season (October)
Wow.  That's insanely cheap -- so very insanely cheap that a Fanime cruise might actually work.  The cheap cruise says it costs $239.  Fanime costs $55 for a weekend weekend pass + $79 per night for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday = $287 and that's only if you get to the cheapest hotel room in time.  Also, Fanime doesn't include food, and cruises normally include all-you-can-eat food.  Who cares if it's off-season if people are just going to cosplay, hold a ball, karaoke, mingle with guests of honor, listen to panels, etc.?  Dealer's Hall won't work, and Artist Alley seems improbable, but events like Gaming and Videos seem potentially difficult but workable if experienced FanimeCon staff tackle the problem.

Quote4) Security issues .. we have enough problem with glomping signs, weapons issues and rabid fan-girls/guys on land. 6 miles out at sea = nightmare
Largest guest capacity for a Carnival cruise ship is less than 4K, making all of them less than 1/3 the size of Fanime at most.

Quote5) Medical issues - nuff said
They have first aid and doctors and such on ships too.

Quote6) Most cruise lines require that the patrons be over the age of 25 unless accompanied by a parent OR be married if over 18(or 21 I forget which) aka the liability issues are off the charts
Get real / old-timer guests like Yamaga or Osborne or Poitras or Horn, and I imagine you can come up with enough reasonably well-off 30-something (or older) otaku to fill a cruise ship for a long weekend.

It might actually work.  Arranging a Fanime cruise sounds like it'd be much easier than trying to pull off FanimeCon itself.  The cruise itself already knows how to take care of a ship full of passengers (providing food, water, medicine, shelter, liability considerations, etc.) without outside intervention, so it's not like the Fanime cruise would have to invite in the police and EMTs by itself, arrange rooms with most of the downtown area, or invite in sushi and boba tea vendors.  Everybody would basically have to be pre-registered, so there wouldn't need to be an at-con registration team or line control for registration.  Badging on the cruise becomes totally unnecessary because being at sea would prevent people from just wandering in off the street.  You're also guaranteed that everybody on the cruise will have a room, so sleeping on the concourse should also not be a problem.  I imagine it wouldn't take any more than a dozen key people from FanimeCon (out of its ~500 staff?) to pull off a Fanime cruise, especially if all weapons and hand-carried props are just banned outright instead of peacebonded.

LoL @ "Admission to Private Famime Events will not be available to the general public."

Notice "Famime" um.... I highly doubt FanimeCon would miss spell their name...

Hmm... Pay 600 or so dollars + air fare(totalling somewhere around 800) for a shitty room not including food to take this cruise.

Nyx: You seem to speak a lot for someone who seemingly has never been on a cruise. Your numbers are incredibly off. First the major one... Cruises are per person, not by room. Most people can't afford fanime by themselves and have to room with multiple people. It'd be like making everyone at the con pay for their own room.

Next, food is not included. If you want decent food, it costs quite a lot, unless you buy a package where food from restaurants are included.

It's so beyond unrealistic.

Besides, I'd rather take my 800$ and fly to Japan, and go visit my friends. Hell, I'd probably meet better "guests" visiting my friends house during a dinner party than I would at this failure of an idea (and what's funny is I'm not joking ^^).

BTW... Carnival is horrible. There's a reason they're so cheap.

All the food on the boat was included.  Yes, the cost is per person, but the FanimeCon hotels charge a minimum of $79 for a single too.
QuoteIf you want decent food, it costs quite a lot
On the boat, there was no other food available for purchase other than the buffets.  It's bulk food, so it's not exactly fine dining, but it's not horrible either.  Much better than hotel concessions, room service, McDonald's, Subways, Jack in the Box, etc.
QuoteBTW... Carnival is horrible. There's a reason they're so cheap.
Royal Caribbean has a 3 night Bahamas cruise for $229.00.

You did notice questionette's reply right before mine, didn't you?  That's what I was responding to.
