Well, if this was already seen before the latest Fanime, sorry for not noticing, but this year I really did notice. While walking around, I think it was Friday or Saturday, I saw the Sasuke, Sakura, Naruto group dressed in the Lolita form, which I think was really creative. They were probably one of my favorite groups in the con. Just thought I'd give them kudos for that.
So, has this been going on for a while, and is anyone planning on doing it for the next Fanime? If so, who, how, and tell me when you're going to the con, because I'm going to want pictures.
Is that what they were doing? I thought it was Sexy no Jutsu, but with more lace and frills. I got a pic of Naruto and Sasuke (I think it was Sasuke - dark outfit) in the hallway between the Marriott and the convention center. Very nice!!
There was also a Lolita-fied Gaara. Did you see the Lolita Transformers? They were my favorite.
I did see the Naruto and Sasuke Lolita's and I believe I saw the Gaara one. But yea that was awesome. I think I have friends who know them. Sadly I dont have a good camera or I would have taken some pictures :D
It could have been the Oiroke no Jutsu, but either way, they looked very Lolita to me, so that's what I'm going to be calling them. I do have a picture of the Gaara and Temari.
Gaara and Temari (http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/xxaznduck22xx/Fanime%202008/100_1183.jpg)
As well as Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. (http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/xxaznduck22xx/Fanime%202008/100_0899.jpg)
Worst idea... since the FAnime Con Cruise
Which one? the older or newer one? they were both horrible.
On the idea factor, I personally believe its a very unique idea. Nice outfits as well. Much better than the outfit you walked around it :D.
But enough of that this isnt the topic of the thread 8)
Me and my friend are going to be Snj Lolita Deidara and Itachi next year ^_~
We'll probably be going to the Naruto gathering which will be on Saturday.
There might be a surprising entrance when we arrive XD
Sounds interesting.. I'll hunt you guys down and take pictures..
But isn't it weird that so far, it's only Naruto characters that are being "Lolita-fied"? Except for those Transformer girls I saw. Very awesome, btw. o_o;
Hm...we need more lolified characters lol. That would be awesome :D Instead of all naruto characters dressing up as lolis...we need more characters from other series as well!

I don't know, bu I'm just staing my opinion. I mean, I love lolita fashion, but making lolita things such as dresses etc for characters is fun. It should be fun. You don't have to be a perfectionaist if you want to have fun, but that's just me.

theres a fine line of being a perfectionist and someone clearly getting it properly coordinated. Im a bit of an elitst when it comes to fashion and especially lolita fashion, If an outfit looks poorly done and/or badly coordinated it shouldnt be seen at all
but to me giving characters (especially males) a female lolitafied look it makes girls who are new to the lolita fashion seem okay it starts off as that then goes to OMG CHII IS SOO LOLI LYKE YANNO SHINKU IS TOO AMIGAWDDD but thats already happened, and it gives birth to the Ita lolita (newbie lolita, whatever)
Those outfits are lolita inspired :x

I understand what you are saying, and most of it is true. But if they know if it's a real lolita or not, then there's no problem. If they can tell the difference between Ita Loli and a real one, then there we go. But we all know cons have good and bad loli cosplayers :x the only thing is to have fun and enjoy yourself instead of judging their sense of fashion. But yeah, we should have fun while wearing anything basically. It makes everyone happy, you know?
Except... loli isn't cosplay. o__o;
I have no problem with cosplay loli for cons, as long as it looks good and is obviously meant as a cosplay that has loli inspiration, or if the person dresses nicey as a loli, but is only able to wear the fashion at conventions for whatever reason. The problem I have with the vast majority of cosplay that claims to be lolis is that it doesn't fit the fashion at all, and typically looks very cheap. Sure, something like our example is loli-inspired cosplay, but that doesn't make it loli. If it were a cosplay that followed the fashion, I wouldn't have a problem with it.
Then again, if they like wearing it, I really don't have any room to judge them. I mean, we all have to start somewhere, right? Actually, the girl on the left (err... bottom) of this pic (http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/xxaznduck22xx/Fanime%202008/100_1183.jpg) isn't too bad, but everyone else in the pics posted look like they are in cheap Halloween costumes. Though, hopefully they learn from their mistakes, and in the future can make some better-looking costumes, since as I said, we all have to start somewhere, right? There is barely anything about them that shares aspects with lolita fashion, though, so it really bothers me to call them lolita. Maybe we can get away with lolita-inspired.
I'm pretty into lolita fashion, as well, but I'm a bit more open about it. I mean, if it is okay to make a "gangster" version of a character, or if it is okay to wear cat ears with jeans and a t-shirt, I don't see why it isn't okay to combine cosplay with any other fashion, as long as it looks good and you know what you are doing, and know that it is cosplay and not actually that fashion. Sure, it sets an example for others, but hopefully they will do their research and learn about what that fashion really is if they see something, and another person learning the loli ways can't hurt, as long as they learn it correctly and don't follow bad examples, right?
Well, I was just saying that people who cosplay and dress as lolitas are well yeah. Of course it's not real lolis. But it's lolita inspired, that's all. But yeah Nina Star, you're right. As long as it looks good and you know what you're doing then it's alright. I've seen pretty bad cheap loli outfits and it was er...yeah. If you've seen the naruto and sasuke lolis, they did a pretty good job on theirs. I just don't know why people think it's not ok to combine cosplay with fashion. It's a bit odd.
The Naruto and Sasuke ones aren't lolita, though, not really even close.
I am actually sort of torn on this, since logically I don't see a problem with people combining fashion as cosplay, as long as it looks like that fashion and looks good, but also, I feel like things like this give lolita a bad name and perpetuate wrong ideas about it. I think that no one should try to pull of a cosplay lolita unless they are already really into the fashion and already very good with it, but very few people so into the fashion would do this. Otherwise, it just ends up... bad.

Very true...
Hopefully my loli outfit for my cosplay isn't bad. I'm also trying to match the loli fashion and putting in my own style to it as well, if not, it'll just turn out to be Lolita inspired instead. But as long as I have fun in it and it looks good then that's not a problem.

Cosplay Lolita is the starter set of becomming a Lolita (sometimes!) Mainly Lolitas who just wear it to anime conventions. But still it SHOULD I MEAN REALLY REALLY OMG NO CAT EARS OR LEGWARMERS be well coordinated and good! Well, keep in mind that I'm also of the mindset that as awesome as way too over-the-top loli outfits can be sometims, they just aren't suited to daily wear and should be considered more of a costume. ;P I know that I'm probably in the minority, especially with the recent popularity of things like deco loli, but seriously! Nothing like that should ever be worn as regular clothing! D:
I think that lolita has some room for costumey-ness, as long as it looks good, is what I am saying. Again, probably in the minorty, and would never do a cosplay lolita myself, but if people enjoy it, I really cannot judge, as bad as cosplay loli is~ I would like to see one good-looking cosplay loli, though, since I doubt it exists.
I'm pretty open about loli fashion, and I think that if someone knows how to break the rules sucessfully and still have it be loli, then they can go right ahead. Just don't call it loli if it isn't, which is what most cosplay loli (and all the examples in this thread) is. Not saying that people should do it or that I like it when people do, just trying to say that I really don't care if they do.
If it looks bad, then it is just another bad cosplay to me. No reason in me caring about it.
hen again, most lolita cosplay that I see takes characters that shouldn't be loli by any means and then gives them what looks like hot topic and some bad maid costumes threw up on them, which... is still just bad cosplay. XD;; I'm typing myself into circles here, aren't I?
Omg XD I don't like it when people just buy stuff from ebay or hot topic to just put on and call it 'cosplay' But what really bugs me is when they say that they made it etc and say it was hand made by them. v.v;

2) It looks nice
3) It's an actual attempt to do something new.

Well...to me, the leggings are well er yeah. But overall, they look nice, I guess close to lolita..not really. Lolita inspired actually. It's definately original though.

Cat ears, tails, leg warmers and the maid apron/items are not Lolita at all (apron thats possibly accepted is the Heart one Imo)
The corset is overpowering the skirts so it looks like the corset goes O NOM NOM NOM giving a very ugly appearance, corsets should be flattering and not consuming a skirt.
Really short skirts are not lolita at all, the girl in the middle...yeah a decent lolita skirt should be a little bit above or at knee length
Needs MOAR petticoats to give the fluff
Its more Ero Lolita from the feel of the sleeves
Maybe it's just me, but I don't find lolified versions of Naruto characters to be particularly original. Maybe it's the "sexy no jutsu", but it feels like it's been done (poorly) to death.
I'm not a follower of loli fashion, however, so take that as you will.
(That said, I have a "one of these days it'll get done" cosplay that's waloli-inspired, but it's more of a loli-influenced cosplay than anything else. I do intend to do my homework, however. Lovecraftian stuff, heh.)

Not sure how come that would not be considered good.
1) It's definitely original.
2) It looks nice
3) It's an actual attempt to do something new.
Because it's a disgustingly distasteful idea. I can start wearing a really stylish-looking hat with ribbons on my ass. That's different, right? If I design it in a way to look aesthetically pleasing, it will look nice. It'd also be pretty damn new. But in the end, it's still just a hat on my ass, and a really idiotic and distasteful idea to bastardize both lolita fashion and cosplaying. (Not that America hasn't already have done that.)
Lolita is a fashion style, and people either wear it on casual occasions like normal clothing, or wear it to special occasions where they'd meet others that are interested in the style. Cosplaying a lolita would be like cosplaying a character that wears clothing that is considered to be lolita-styled, but still apart from the fashion or what would be fashionable within the modern take on its style. Cosplaying a character that isn't even DESIGNED to be anywhere
close to being lolita, and then trying to design around it to MAKE it lolita... is just a sight for sore eyes.
Take a look at that photo you posted again. How could you even think that that tacky orange and blue dress isn't dreadfully ugly? It's not even a matter of just taste, anymore. It's about having ANY sort of standards... which I'd assume you'd have to set pretty damn low for you to be able to even like this. As for the other two, you can't even tell that they're supposed to be any character, save for the ridiculous Uchiha fan on her apron, they look like any other poorly designed weeaboo lolita outfit.

Aw, you're so sweet. XD
I have friends who are into lolita fashion. I know how seriously some people take it. Hell, anyone who's passionate about something is going to take it seriously, and get offended when others don't treat it with what they think of as proper respect -- it's only being human. I guess, to me, it's trying to respect how they and others like them feel. And okay, giving in to neuroses that say "do it properly!" and wanting it to look good. Presumably everyone wants the looking-good part, at least. :3 There's always going to be interpretation and taste, and people who think something looks good. Me, I don't find those outfits particularly pleasing to the eye, for a variety of reasons, all taken without even the basis of lolita -- but I'm sure some people did, even if it was just the thrill of a short skirt (which, let's face it, is an unfortunate but true trend in cons).
(And I'm gonna get off the soapbox now and go be neurotic about other things.)
(Also, I <3 the asshat analogy. XD )

Haha, thanks. Maybe I should market it and advertise it as "OFFICIAL JAPANESESES TREND!" o/
Lolita fashion is so cute^.^ but I don't really think changing naruto intoi lolita form is very nice. Even thought i must admit the thought of Sasuke in lolita form makes me giggle
i'll be doing yaya-chan again, of course her being in lolita is a given.
Just thought I'd pop in with one last remark since I'm only a few years into cosplaying myself.
Not since the Hot Topic Vash jackets have I seen anyone so angry about outfits and cosplay. Cosplaying is for fans, done by fans, right? If I want to throw an apron or lace on top of an outfit, that's my choice. I like that some people are trying to do something different with a cosplay as I also appreciate someone who can be anal down to the last detail about an outfit such as special buttons or it can't be any lace, it's got to be lace with little hearts on it along the edge no more than an inch wide etc etc. I know some people who are on the edge of snootiness because of the detail in their cosplay. But some of us can't afford to be detailed but just want to look like a character.
Please, please don't shoot down someone just because of what they are wearing (unless it's just outrageously offensive). A little more tolerance here, people. Kazuko, I appreciate that you are knowledgeable about Lolita. Don't belittle someone for lack of knowledge, please, rather educate them. In a nice way. Host another panel. Link us to a website.
Sorry for griping, I've tried to read most of the posts here so if I've misunderstood some of it, I apologize.
Lolita isnt even cosplay at all, here in the US many have marked it as cosplay. Lolita is a fashion lifestyle and like all fashions there are going to be elitist anal bitches like myself who get really irritated about poorly done or badly coordinated looks, or at the fact that cosplay and Lolita dont even go hand in had. Sure there have been Inspired items like the outfits in rozen maiden and in chobits but those are not lolita outfits at all. Cat ears, maid aprons or maid headresses, leg and arm warmers dont really consititute lolita at all. Yet people still do it. Yes I am mean about it but at least im bringing my point across
There are proper ways too coordinate the look and In the things in the universe section there was a thread about lolita but I will TL;DR the link here http://www.lolitafashion.org/index.php this is a good site for starter lolitas
But as having a lolitafied cosplay character, Like Jun and Pryon said its not a good Idea, its very distasteful not to mention it is a bit of a sight for sore eyes when the outfit is poorly coordinated. to even change a character that isnt meant to be another gender or lolita is just so...wrong IMO
Its like If I were to make Leonidus from 300 a Female add some lace and be like HAY GAIZ IS DIS RORI? clearly its not meant to be. hes macho character lets leave him with his spray on abs and his masculinity in check, IMO i feel like it ridicules the character
Thanks for the website, it was informative. I do have some Japanese Lolita fashion magazines that I looked through and one thing I did notice, is that lace is not a requirement. (Of course your petticoat or bloomers may have lace on them but the outer garments: skirt, blouse, headpiece, need not have lace.) So simply adding lace to an outfit is not going to 'Lolita-fy' it. Adding what appears to be an apron isn't 'Lolita-fying' either. You might say instead that the Naruto-cosplayers 'maid-inspired' their characters instead of 'Lolita-fied', though I'll probably get slammed for saying that. ::)
At any rate, give the cosplayers credit for trying something different, hope that they've read this thread and will do more homework/research if they attempt it again, and then let's just let this go.
One more note, Jan Kurotaki in her book Everybody Cosplay! showed a version of Sakura that, unless you knew the character well, looks original and unlike Sakura (except for her headpiece). And in the anime, I thought only Naruto pulled the Sexy no Jutsu, even though there are gatherings for other characters in Sexy no Jutsu form. I guess what I'm saying is, if someone wants to modify an outfit, let them try. If they fail, that's their problem and we'll let them know, gently. If they succeed, more power to them.
Oh, and the Leonidus example is too extreme, a better (bad) example might be putting Alucard (Hellsing) in a skirt and petticoat, adding ruffles to his coat sleeves and a ribbon on his hat. Heaven forbid!
lol well I have one image of Leonidus so...

I laughed when I read this. First off, it has nothing to do with cosplay at all. It's more about attention whoring and ATTEMPTING to be original, yet failing. I'm not snooty at all really. I just ask for a few basic things. The character slightly resembles the character in terms of body shape, size, type. The cosplayer KNOWS the character they are cosplaying and in some way enjoys the character. They aren't doing it just for attention. I don't care if it looks perfect, as long as it looks decent enough to wear it resembles it well. If the character is wearing a mandarin collared shirt, wearing a Europeon collared shirt will not fly. If the jacket is beige, and you're wearing a tan jacket... that will not fly either. Atleast ATTEMPT to be accurate.

I never shoot down someone for lack of knowledge. I shoot down people who claim to be knowledgable, when they clearly aren't. There's a huge difference between someone wanting to learn more, and someone acting like they know all about something. However, it shouldn't be *our* job to educate someone who lacks knowledge. There's plenty of outposts to learn about something. For god's sake they're on the internet, that in itself is an infinite well of resources, though there is a flaw. The internet has as much BAD/FALSE information as it does good. Some people are just too stupid to filter it out correctly and believe everything they read.
I will shoot down people who cosplay stupid things for stupid reasons with no actual reasoning or support as to why they are doing it. They make my fandom look bad, which reflects negatively on a lot of things.
QuoteSorry for griping, I've tried to read most of the posts here so if I've misunderstood some of it, I apologize.
And the apology at the end which is supposed to justify everything... why do you people do this? It's so god damned stupid. You make a rant, bitch, and call out people for things, then apologize at the end assuming that this prevents you from doing anything offensive. It doesn't, it just makes you look like a stupid wuss.

My goodness. Many fans do NOT resemble the character in terms of body shape, size, type (male? female?), are you going to prohibit them from cosplaying anyway? Beige vs Tan? Who's being snooty? And honestly, if you're cosplaying, you're an 'attention whore'. If you weren't you'd dress in t-shirts and jeans and stay in the background.

Define actual reasoning besides: 'Because I wanted to do it that way.' And one of the reasons for forums like this is so fans can ask questions and get answers.

I justify nothing, I post when I want to say something. I was ranting, yes, just as you are ranting, but I apologized in case I ranted about something that may have been explained in a post that I did not read. If I want to be offensive, well, I've got some good examples here in this thread.

At first I thought the thread title said Lolified Characters, which probably isn't a bad ide-- *shot*
Anyway, I'm indifferent to lolita'd cosplays, but you have to admit that Naruto "lolita" has awfully tacky colors, and lolita is a fashion more than a cosplay...
Then again I find it funny that "lolita-fied" cosplay is shot down, while gansta Mario characters were not. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a hypebeast style cosplay soon.

I thought it was a good idea. If a person does it right then hurray.
Well some Naruto Lolitas have super bright tacky colors to it. It somewhat goes along with the character itself. But of course, some Naruto Lolified characters weren't coordinated right, making it a bit off.
LOL, I can't believe the gangster Mario characters were not shot down. It just makes me laugh. XD But I wouldn't mind seeing what people come up with next. Bleach characters Fan Service? XD Eh..

They weren't? They're all the same. Bad attention whores, are bad attention whores. There's no integrity in anything anymore.
I suppose we can pretty much say the same thing for Pimp Ash (http://www.divideby0.com/photos/2003/ACen/pics/DSCN2667.JPG). lol.
well i didnt see a picture but lolified characters, sexy no jutsu's, and sexy pokemon are all AutoFAIL (with the exception of some like lolita joker :U man that was hawt)

Lolita Fashion is not sexual its supposed to be princess like, looking like a little doll NOT some cheap hooker type thing I could pull together last minute with a halloween costume and RACE

Well, you're commissioning something so you should abide by whatever your client wants done. My opinion, though, at least don't make lolita-esque versions... of their uniforms. Not only would that be tacky, it just wouldn't make any sense.
But I mean, what can you do, really? If that's what your client wants, you'll have to try to meet their expectations. If they decide to go with something like that, it isn't your responsibility to be worried whether or not they look retarded. The only reason that should be a concern is if you're running a business and having them advertise your work by wearing it, and you don't want to ruin the integrity of it by making them look stupid. The only way I can really see it somewhat working is just making original (and not based off any outfit in canon) lolita outfits suitable for each character, and them making it as distinguishing as possible with their wigs or something.

It would be a rendition of the female uniforms. I don't wear over-the-top dresses like Angelic Pretty. What i was thinking is that the costume must look like 3000 dollar uniforms that they're portraying. Fine lace that you find in lolita would do just that. What I mean is a Ouran version of this type of onepiece with lace on the bottom, the collar, and the sleeves:

Lolified-costumes don't HAVE to be tacky.
Innocent world is actual brand though, ooh but its cute :d it looks like its hand knit but the print is fooling me
Lolita inspired cosplay dosent have to be tacky but there are people who make it tacky such as adding legwarmers or cat ears, making it poor quality or a smaller skirt and my "favorite" Lace explosion, A cosplay of lolita inspiration needs to have the basic shapes such as a cupcake or bell shape for the skirt, My advice look up lolita handbook and it will help you alot or this http://www.lolitafashion.org/index.php
for lace I suggest cotton lace since rachel is a bit scratchy and the cotton is a nice soft touch (shakes a half fist at metamorphose)
If you are looking for a comission i Strongly suggest In the starlight, Fan Plus friend is kind of aweful at times, a girl I know spent 150 on a dress and it didnt even come close to the stock photo they had on their site

Lolified-costumes don't HAVE to be tacky.
Oh, I had the impression YOU were commissioning the cosplays for someone else...
You could easily make a lolita-outfit
inspired by their uniform's design, as it is simplistic and easily compatible in terms of sharing a detail or two into the new design. Since it's so simple, (Since you're just using the uniform's design with the customized length, right?) it could be both referred to as, "a lolita outfit inspired by their uniform" or "a lolita take on their uniform". UNLESS, you're making pretty much the original outfit, but adding "lolita" inspired details to make it appear more like a real-life portrayal of their uniforms, but with finer details... that isn't "lolitfying". That's just personalizing the style to make it look more realistic, which is probably fine in this case, if you choose your cosplay to look less cartoony. Lolitifying is making a bastardized version of a costume in canon, but with frills, lace, and bows when it doesn't have any.
And yes, lolita-inspired cosplays don't have to be tacky. There are many decent ways to actually make a lolita-styled rendition of another cosplay while still being tasteful and fashionable-- it just so happens that no one so far that I've seen has been able to do that without failing horribly.
I had first thought you meant the boys' uniforms. If that, there's really no way around making a "lolitafied" version for Ouran High School's school uniform without being tacky. While I can easily design something that isn't a complete eye-sore and fitting the criteria, in the end, it's still... a lolitafied version of their school uniform. The idea of it is already tacky. It completely destroys the POINT of their uniform. What meant to be clean-cut and studious being made into a lace and frill-infested abomination, tacked on with the distinguishing characteristics obviously like of that in canon... I'm not sure if that's my heart sinking, or me throwing up a little.
It's rather funny that you're saying this to a real lolita. o_o
Many Ouran host club cosplays I've seen were actually really tacky in themselves, although they tried to look like those in the anime. Adding luxurious touches to an outfit that's supposed to look like it's worth 3,000 dollars is an important effort in itself, no? Bell-shaped skirt, luxurious lace, modest cuts. That's REAL lolita. Not a "sexy" rendition of maid cosplay.

What was the point of including that, really? The information and opinion doesn't change, whether or not you're a lolita. Unless you were just being pretentious. If it makes it any more creditable for you, I'm fairly knowledgeable on the style, it's brands, and variations, even if I don't partake in this end of the fashion community, myself.

Well, those are just examples of "BAD COSPLAYING". You see it a lot more often, even outside of just Ouran cosplays. And adding details to make it portray what it was meant to be isn't "lolitifying", still. It's just your effort in making something work in real life up to your own preferences and standards, i.e.
cosplaying. As for that, it isn't described as "REAL LOLITA!!" rather than just having some actual taste and trying to make the effort to make your cosplay as quality as possible. By referring to a quality version of their uniform as anything remotely close to "real lolita", though... yes, it may have lolita characteristics, but most people who consider themselves "lolita" wouldn't even compare it like that, as the uniform is nothing close to what is fashionable in the lolita community. It's a uniform. From what I remember, the uniform is SUPPOSED to have a bell-shaped skirt and modest cuts, save from the lace... which definitely wasn't canon. Anything otherwise is just another example of a crap-job of a cosplay.
I was wondering... does this discussion really matter? o_O It's cosplay. We do this for fun. Why does it induce throwing up when it's not done in a sloppy way? But you know... when we do uniforms in cosplay, it already looks strange to those who wear school uniforms in everyday life, despite "being done well."
*sigh* I should just lurk for another few months before I really consider next year's Fanime. Obviously, I'm not welcomed.
I've really been into Lolita fashion for years and I do understand that it's fashion and not meant to be cosplay. I really don't mind the lolified naruto characters actually. A while back I would be offended about it and how people are butchering the fashion and stuff. (I was pretty elitist, too, going on about "real" lolitas and what not) I would've been offended because people would look at that and go "Oh, so THAT's lolita", thinking that it was cosplay with too much lace when it isn't and fear the moment when someone looks at me in what would be considered the "appropriate lolita fashion" and place me at the same level as those cosplay lolitas. But now I don't care. People may look at me and compare me to those cosplay lolitas and get the wrong idea, but so what? I don't expect everyone to be so knowledgeable about everything regarding lolita. I dress lolita for myself, regardless if anyone cares or knows what it is. I think it's fun, and I think those lolitafied characters and that gangster mario are fun, too. I don't take them seriously. I wouldn't doubt them if they made it tacky on purpose with the cheap lace and materials. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if they even did it to make fun of lolitas.

Cosplay is for fun, but it doesn't mean others aren't allowed to have actual standards. If I choose to intentionally do something distasteful
for fun, I'm not going to expect other people to lower their standards to automatically like it, just because I'm having fun. And even if you're wearing a uniform from an anime series, it's still cosplaying, and cosplay in general is a niche hobby that most normal people would find somewhat strange.

If you read my post clearly enough, you'd know that I had at least said you have some taste as to how you want to construct your cosplay. But if every other disagreeing detail is enough to set you off from not attending, well... I guess a heads up is warranted. Fanime is filled with thousands of people. Chances are, not every one of them is going to agree with your exact opinion. Hate you break it to you, but it applies to the rest of the world, as well.
If you adore the fashion then of course you are supposed to care if people do it wrong, Consider me elitst or not but when someones giving pointers on the fashion sure even the more experienced people need to give pointers as well, I am interested in this fashion since about 2002 not that it cares but still I learn and re-read what the anatomy of lolita outfits are, also you are able to tell if people are doing it wrong. If they are doing it wrong GUIDE them
Jun is right the whole outfit thing, People have tastes and standards on how cosplay is done, there are people who do it very well they put months of time and effort studying the anatomy of the outfits and fabric choices, even breaking the bank for some cosplays (depending like Kosmos or something more elaborate), Then there are people who dont study the anatomy of the outfit and themselfs, put things together sometimes last minute and it looks half-assed, I love cosplay but if you cant do it right then GET IT COMISSIONED
To make an outfit look like 3000 dollars you pretty much have to spend that amount to make it look like that sure fine lace, good fabrics and have the BASIC shapes of lolita fashion. I could get AP or baby clothes for that much though :d just saying (if the 3000 is USD)
its like saying all lolitas have to be nice and never mean or whatever, its not true at all. thats changing who you are, you can be yourself and dress lolita because it is FASHION, the lifestyle is different its optional (read kamikaze girls, its a damn good example of it)
Having your head to toe covered in brand does not necissarly mean TRUE lolita. I know lolitas who make their own skirts and combine it with brand. You dont have to have all brand to be called lolita. Its how much effort and skill is put into it that means reserch, study your pattern and good materials (no synth fabrics, cheap lace or satin), pick the color coordinate and your sewing skills. (if they are not up to par
I have met lolitas in Japan most are pretty cool and sure they dont even wear all brand themselfs its mixed and matched with clothes they made. Thats what makes it unique
People get common misconceptions because of the origins of lolita have been warped arround, to debug a big myth Lolita fashion WAS NOT started by mana-sama, it started arround the 1970's I think 79 since thats when Angelic pretty first opened
but yeah thats my two cents, strawrose one post shouldnt deture you from a con, seriously? just chin up and understand what jun is saying

I agree with Kazuko, don't let one post stop you from doing what you want. Of course not everyone will agree with you, but there will still be plenty of people who do and would be glad to see you at Fanime. I love the look of Lolita but unfortunately it's just not my own style (my job restricts what I can wear during the week and on weekends it's t-shirts and jeans :D). Years back I used to want to dress in what I referred to as the Oz style, based on the illustrations in the books by L Frank Baum. The illustrator was John R Neill, beautiful flowing dresses and hair tresses that swirled up and around. Sigh. Part of the reason I cosplay is to try and capture feeling like that again. So live the way you will and see you at the next con.
