I'm curious about how good is your Japanese in general since I only met very few real Japanese attendees spoke Japanese towards me during Fanime and we had a decant conversation. I'm raised in a Japanese family that I do good enough to have a conversation but still need work on more Kanji and more hard vocabulary. And I need practice speaking more wit actual fluent people!
EDIT: Sorry guys, since there was a stupid internet fight wit annoying Mikey rude post towards me and my girlfriend, I'm gonna lock this and let this move to the Internet Drama thread.
very little. :-X i'll just watch enough anime in japanese and I'll emulate it like a weebo should. :P
I only know as much as a semester's worth of Japanese, though I'm slightly a bit farther than my class in terms of kanji and vocab. I pick up words and phrases here and there from anime as well. Only thing I really need work on is my grammar, maybe increase my vocab and kanji, and I'll probably be good to go.
There's probably a high chance that I'll pick it up again for a second semester or longer.
(I only took the class because it offered a buttload of college credit, which was totally worth it >>)
I'm finishing up an M.A. in Japanese and I'm a freelance translator, so I like to think I'm pretty decent, though I'm better with written than spoken.
Hehe, *very* little. I can do very basic conversational stuff and I can read a bit of Kanji coz I took Chinese for three years at my high school. >.>
I'm taking Japanese 1 for my senior year in high school for fun. (:
Enough.
I've had two years at college (equal to 4 years high school) but I suck at speaking. I prefer to listen and read; its what I'm better at. Composing is so-so but I'd get stuck if I didn't have dictionaries ready. I still tend to mess up with those darn particles; namely "は" and "が".
I'm still at the stage where I need a dictionary for some things but I can understand quite a bit; its unknown words that throw me off.
I'd probably improve if I actually practiced more but I'm too lazy (right now) to practice with real people. XP
Not enough
My Japanese knowledge is strongly skewed towards vocabulary and phrases that are useful in anime but not elsewhere.
So I can follow a fair bit of a typical anime in raw, but I won't get the tough sentences. And if it comes to useful everyday interactions, I'm pretty hopeless.
I have a slightly harder time reading, even if there's furigana. If it's straight-up kanji, forget about it. I know hardly any.
Just enough to make myself look like an idiot.
I've forced myself to watch the rest of the entire eps of Ninku in Raw since there was the lack of fansubs available for that series. But I did understood almost half of the dialogues through the entire series.

If you understood only half of a children's anime series... you're not very fluent. You're nothing close to fluent. It means you understand basics and that's about all.
I can understand decently well, but much like most languages, I don't like speaking other languages unless I absolutely have to. I found my way around Japan just fine, and was able to ask and understand whatever help was needed to find whatever it was that I was looking for.

Oh yes I can understand childen's anime series like Doraemon just fine. I have trouble wit harder word vocabulary and I have to ask my mom what it means. I had to speak alot towards my family and our Japanese Trainees who crashes at my Mom's place. The only Japanese I can't understand worth shit is my Dad's Gagoshima dialect. I would like hear your Japanese in person and have a nice conversation. All right lets say I'm not really fluent then plus both my older sisters are more fluent than I am.

this quite possibly has potential for being a really, really bad encounter.
I knew a small amount of the language, but since I haven't used it(more like never used it), I have pretty much forgotten everything(save for like a very, very, very small amount of simple words), so I'm sure that I would be royally screwed if I got stuck anywhere in japan.
I can't make heads or tails of the language, I do know some words in Japanese, but that's mainly it.
Nothing XD.
And I prefer not to walk around looking like a wonder bread idiot trying to speak Japanese.
To paraphrase a saying, I know enough to realize how little I know. In a similar vein to Pyron's comment, I wouldn't speak unless I had to.
Uhhh... NANTO HO'O KEN OUGI TENSHO JUJIHO.

How you like Akihabara? I've only been there once unless my mom refresh my memory when I was little.
VERY little, pretty much close to nothing, lol. XD
I only watch anime to know a "few" :-X
very little, about a year of high schools worth, I can understand shows like Chibi Maruko Chan, Doraemon and ofcourse totoro :d though I did watch those while I was in Japan.
I'm fluent, people are always surprised when I tell them that I'm American whenever I'm over there. But my writing sucks.... it stopped at like a 4th grade level. I guess I know enough where I can type a decent essay and read the newspaper. I won't lie, I do prefer speaking/hearing Japanese over English a lot of the times.
j
I won't make any kind of grandiose claims about my JP comprehension. All I know is that I can play fully-voiced galge and listen to drama CDs and understand most of it. Reading's a bit lacking. I often find myself hitting the kanji wall head first.

so what if he's Japanese that doesn't automatically obligate him to speak Japanese with me, and i stated earlier Ive started forgetting my Japanese either way because i don't speak it often whenever i do its in short bursts, sometimes i come across words he doesn't know or i dont know either so in that case we're both screwed until one of us looks it up on the net

MAN and speak more Japanese than the rest of us can do!
Back to the subject! Anyone else knows Japanese?

I managed to catch a few phrases but honestly, I know crap for Japanese. One of these days I might take a class for shits and giggles, but I'm not too worried about it.

... Huh? But I quoted you guys exactly, and stated the clear contridiction in what you guys wrote. So how is that nonsense, and how does that make me not very smart? And what does being a man have to do with anything? If I cared to learn Japanese, I would. It might be interesting and what not, and semi-useful since a good majority of my friends are Japanese, and what with me going to Japan occasionally. In the end though, I don't think it's worth the time to invest in it. I know a small amount to get me by. I don't see investing a few years of my life to learn Japanese only to play import games, read comics, watch cartoons, and to have a conversation with Japanese people when I don't need to.
Actually, there is one legitimate reason why I should learn Japanese, so I can go be a host, rake in about a million dollars, and have a good laugh with Eileen about it.

F*cking retards.
Ah, well... since I finally posted in this thread, I guess I'll contribute with my fair share of "manliness". I can't say that I'm fluent, but my comprehension is pretty average. I can speak enough to get by, and to have simple conversations. I have several relatives and family friends that only speak Japanese, and at most, some Mandarin (which I'm more confident in speaking) and maybe some English-- and they tolerate my poor form of speaking while understanding the majority of what I say. My pronunciation is pretty native-sounding, from the opinions I've been given, and the confusion of others thinking I actually speak fluently. (Ha. Ha.) But English is now my primary language.
I tried learning French, but that didn't work out too well. Studying languages... I don't mind it, but I haven't really gave it an actual go, just yet. I can understand most dialogue in anime and tv shows, unless the style of speaking differs from normal speech-- and even then, I recognize most stereotypical "accents" and slang, or whatever you call them. I'm bad with different dialects, but some don't stray too far away from the primary language, and tend to be fine. It only takes me longer to understand. I can play most fully-voiced eroge, save from a few Nitro+ titles (Saya no Uta) that tend to have pretty advanced language.
I can pick up a manga and understand a good amount of what's being said to the extent I can follow a storyline, in most cases-- only a few that use regional-terms, advanced terms, etc etc, language puns and what have you, I start having trouble. My kanji comprehension sucks ass, as I can honestly say I don't know more than 2000+ kanji... I think. In the end, my comprehension in terms of READING and LISTENING... totally outdo my ability to speak and write, myself.
I think that's about it. Isn't as good as I'd like it to be, but I know enough where it can be somewhat convenient. I just don't feel confident in speaking it for extended amounts of time. I find myself speaking Mandarin more often, as more people here speak it. It's also become a household thing, now that my mum's new boyfriend only speaks Mandarin fluently.
I know a few words none are useful.

You realize there's different lines and train types right? I had to switch 3 different trains to get from where I was staying to get to GirlfromIpanema's place. Hell, we had to switch twice just to get from her place to a petstore. ALL WITHIN TOKYO... ZOMG!
I wondered why you never shut the fuck up! Want me to go travel to Millbrae for our next fanime gathering?
Because I like pointing out how stupid things are, that stupid people like you say. You're not supposed to cuss on this forum.
This is a present for you!

Thats nice. The only places I've been to was Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, Tokyo, Saitama, Akihabara since I have Japanese relatives scattered around Japan. I also went to the Okinawa as well but I forgot what district I visited or is there? HAHAHA Pyron writes these "bakabakashii" post on these forums probably having fun wit it.
Isn't.... Akiba... IN Tokyo? :|

I felt like they're like different parts since I had to change trains for that? Correct me on that one?
You're probably confusing Tokyo station with Tokyo as a whole....
Tokyo *station* is in Marunouchi, but Akibahara is part of Tokyo. Tokyo is a large large city. You have to change trains to get anywhere. I switch trains on my commute and my commute isn't even 10 minutes on the trains. I'm guessing you haven't been to New York, which is also the same.
I'm not sure why you would list Saitama as its own special entry though. That's like making a big deal out of going through New Jersey on a trip to New York.

Hahahahahahahahahhahahahahaha I'd totally wear that just because it'd be hillarious and ironic. Well, if it wasn't so poorly made. It'd have to be well made.
But once more, I wonder what you're trying to accomplish with this crap, other than looking like a dumbass.

IC. Just like I said that I just need correcting on me on this one since I haven't been to Japan for like 3 years now! Unlike Mikey's post doesn't know his manner.
Mikey is a big wuss that he needs his mommy! I kind of wondered why are you accomplishing going head on wit everyone in the first place and I can't believe you still posting all morning for this shit as much as I do!
