Title: What game are you competitive on or working hard on?
Post by: OniCourseMusha on June 14, 2008, 02:11:33 AM
Sometimes we're bit serious when it comes to our gaming side.

Right now I'm more competitive on DDR, Guitar Hero, Tetris, and Ouendan/EBA.
But I'm working hard to move up on IIDX, Guitar Freaks, Drummania, Pop'N music.  I somtime work on SSBB and SFIII Third Strike.

Soul Calibur 4!!!! Ok I know it's not out yet but still, as soon as July 29th hits, that's the only game that will exist in my eyes.  Anyone else wanna get good at this game, get at me!  I'm having a release party gathering and plan to host weekly gatherings at my place.

Dynatsy Samurai warriors.

Few people will even play with me anymore.

It's always " Dammit Yuu! Were on the SAME side!" or " What the hell are you doing!? Your going to get us BOTH killed!!!"
Or simply" Oh goddamnit Yuu "

Hey, I have fun and get to drive my friends crazy. In the end, isn't that what really matters?

YES, YES YOU SHOULD.

There totally should be a mini Golden Eye 64 tournament next year or at least some four player action.

I... got sucked back into the world of MTG. Stupid friends. I've sworn off Standard format, though- these days, I'm tinkering around with an Extended-legal B/G/w control deck that I highly suspect is within spitting distance of being competitive.

And on the electronic front? DDR. Or, rather, Stepmania, since I've already plunked down three solid Benjamins on my arcade-modded Cobalt Flux pad, and I'm not desperate to give Konami any more money to make shoddy half-assed stepcharts with. I'll make my own shoddy, half-assed stepcharts, thanks all the same.

The Barret?

They Hit with the first shot, and if they miss (or glance), they adjust there aim and force there cross hairs on the target

Or I assume with experience with other guns. I don't actually use the Barret because I find a one hit kill weapon thats also semi automatic to be cheap.
And I also have a habit with being a ninja.

On another note, all the Cod4 semi-auto weapons (like the Barret, M14, and pistols) can effectively be fired as fast as you can pull the trigger (how thats realistic is beyond me).
I've seen players who use macro controlers run around with Desert Eagles or Barrets with steady aim, pull the there triggers and waste there clips within a second, kind of making a Shotgun-Sniper effect killing all within sight.

That reminds me, Shotyrifles (Not the CoD4 Macroed ones), Glorious.

I can't say I've been working hard on any of my games lately (ahh, the joys of summer night class), but I have started back up on Radiant Dawn. Unfortunately, after a certain point in time of playing SSBB online and kicking major @ss, I went into a hiatus state and never fully returned from it. Now, my brother plays nearly everyday and I have yet to go back. :/

The MLG has a WoW PvP Circuit.
But a competitive MMORPG player does not fit so well.
PvP does not equal being Competitive in a MMO, at least in my book.

im just taking a shot in the dark on this, but aren't the different grooves like different styles, like one based towards tech-based moves, etc?

Kinda...

One groove is in style of the King of Fighters (or Fatal Fury) game

But some are just plain useless

I wrote this as an article on one of my old blogs because I had a lot of people asking what the grooves were. I think most of the info is right, I'm too lazy to check.

C, A, P are dashing grooves (Pressing forward twice or backward twice)

S, N, K are running grooves (Pressing forward twice, and hold for desired length of run)

C, A, N can perform a roll (By pressing lk and lp)

S can perform a dodge (By doing the same movement as roll)

C, A, S, N can perform an Alpha Counter (While blocking, press forward and mp, mk)

N can perform a Counter roll (While blocking, press forward or backwards and lk and lp)

P, S, N, K can perform small jump

C, S, P can perform a slow-get up (When on ground, press all 3 punches)

A, N, K can perform fast recovery (When about to hit ground press all 3 punches)

GROOVE BREAKDOWN

C-Groove

-3 level bar, can perform level 1,2,3 supers if built to the certain level

-Can perform Super Canceling which is performing a level 2 super, and canceling it with a special, or another level 1 super.

            -Can block in the air

A-Groove

-2 level one bars, can only perform level 1 supers

-Can perform a Custom Combo (I will not be covering different CC's in this article)

-Has the smallest bar in the game

P-Groove

-One level 3 bar, can only perform level 3 supers

-Can perform a parry which is forward for high/mid attacks, and down for low attacks.

-The biggest bar in the game

S-Groove

-One level 1 bar, can only perform level 1 supers if bar is filled and not critical mode

-Can be in critical mode, which at a low life when your bar is flashing, can perform level 1 supers if not charged bar, or with a charged bar can perform level 3 supers

-Can perform dodge attacks, after dodging, you can press a punch or kick button to perform a dodge attack.

N-Groove

-3 level one bars, can only perform level 1 supers if not powered up

-Can go into a powered up mode, where you give a tiny bit more damage, and can perform level 3 supers. (Going into POW mode requires one bar)

K-Groove

-One level 3 bar, can only perform level 3 supers.

-Can only perform supers when raged, when you take a certain amount of hits, or you JD moves your bar pops, causing you to be raged.

-Can Just-Defend moves, by pressing back at the time of an attack, when JD'ing you gain a tiny bit of life and your rage bar goes up.

----

Anyways, I bet to differ that a groove in CvS2 is useless, they're all pretty good, and decent at most (Even S groove can mess people up badly, mostly gimmicks.) Also, I recommend not picking up CvS2 for serious play anymore, it's a dead game in tourneys, unless you're a member of a certain place in San Jose (Not disclosing in public)

My team for Marvel vs Capcom 2 is Iron Man, Morrigan, and Sakura.

Iron Man: Great infinites, has an easy one- launcher, hold forward jump, lp, lp, lk, fp, repeat
and also has a hard one- uhhhh...... in the air, mash buttons, fly, unfly, mash buttons, repeat.
Morrigan: the Magneto of capcom
Sakura: uhhhhh.... her 'upper' amazingly goes threw everything.

Overall, with the exception of Sakura, I think you have yourself a decent team.

For good vids of Iron Man, go watch "Illan" or "Killa Kelly" on youtube or something.

Good characters to look for in a team
Doom- has great assist (anti-air) and pairs great with Strider for 20% health chip damage
Strider- fast, can whiff a lot of moves, can OTG alot of his moves, combos really well into Doom's assist, and has a lot of mix up
Storm- fastest character in the game, easy combos that DO damage, and has a great mix up game
Magneto- the most infintes in a game.... EVER
T Bonne- Projectile assist is glitched and WILL KILL YOU when combo'ed
I would post a lot more, but then I would have enough to make an MvC2 thread.

If anyone wants more though, SRK. Or youtube tutorials, or you might just be able to get some info off of me if i know it.

edit again: if you play this game, play it on either the arcade cabs, or on the DC, the PS2 and x-box versions are NOT arcade perfect and are considered TRASH by pro players.

GGPO 3S 100$ right now. ... ... ...

Morrigan sucks in MvC2. Doom is a horrible assisst for anyone that isn't Sent or Strider. Strider is ONLY good with doom as an assisst, and if you have near flawless game play. Absolutely no one plays StriderxDoom anymore except for Clock. Storm is slower than Magneto... and Sentinel for that matter. Magneto doesn't have the most infinites in a game... ever. Seeing that COTA infinites or XvsSF infinite numbers are astronomical. There's a reason a lot of us call XvsSF a puzzle game... and not a fighting game. T.Bonne assist won't kill you, it's just extra damage since it doubles damage if your in hit stun when it hits you. PROBLEM... if you can't land it, you just wasted a slot where you could have had a good AA assist instead.

PS... DC VERSION ISN'T ARCADE PERFECT wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. It's just the CLOSEST thing to being arcade perfect that's out there. It's great how you don't list Sentinel, who is arguably best character in MvC2.

For someone offering money matches, you very much sound like a scrub.

Colorado? Where at. I'll have someone else MM you. I know plenty of people in Colorado.

I didn't list sent because I was in a hurry. I think that Storm is faster than Mag, but the the way mag is played and how often he is used, he looks way faster. I live in Colorado Springs.

I'm not that great, but I can hold my own for a bit. I will put money down regardless if I'm better than you or not, I just like having fun and I still consider myself a scrub since I can't really practice anymore, my copy is gone, and my stick is broke, and I don't know a thing about making my own sticks.

A friend of mine uses team clockwork, but hes probably as good as clock jr from the vids I've seen of that guy.

I see what you mean from what you take in my posts and I was exxagerating a bit, but I still see your point. Great arguements. lol. You made me feel extra scruby.

Edit: Man..... I played recently, and a ffew months of NOT practicing made me play like shit. I can't play Sent as good anymore. I need a new stick, or a converter atleast, and also I need a copy again.

Competitive; Final Fantasy Tactics (PSP).
When it comes to fighting games, er... I'm a button-masher.
I'm playfully competitive -- I'm not a fan of people who are sore losers.

Working Hard On; Star Ocean 2.
Decided to replay it before it comes out on PSP (I'm sure I will, of course).
And my, *sigh~*, fifth time playing Eternal Sonata. Curse you Score Pieces. >: (

the best tekken player in the world is very humble, and he is very ignorant to his own global fame.  when i met him, he seemed like the kind of guy who was never done improving himself.  he'd find the most insignificant problem with his game and obsessively work to overcome it.  i'm just saying winning doesn't mean you should be arrogant and have an ego to boot.  i also think competitive gamers should never think they're "good enough".  once you say that, you're fucked.  ^_^

When he said that, it made me think of him as a little arrogant.

Don't confuse "not humble" with arrogant. Wong proves himself over and over again. What he says is true, so it's not really arrogance. He's skilled and talented. He's an alright guy, but all his talk isn't just talk. Choi on the other hand is really humble, same with Hsien. Valle is extremely confident, and is a little arrogant at times, but once more, he proves himself time and time again. Amir is the epitome of being humble. Always talking about how he's getting lucky and how if just a small thing were different he'd have lost. How if it weren't for that extra practice he would have missed something that would have cost the match. Ed Ma is one of the nicest guys ever. That guy will play with anyone, and talk and try to pep up the guy he's playing against, give him pointers, and everything. Watson is just... Watson. Can't even describe him. On flip, you look at the JP community, there's all kinds there too. Daigo who is pretty anti-social, doesn't really say a word so you can't call him humble or arrogant. Nuki on the other hand is all about having fun while doing it. KSK... hahahhaa, he's more about the community and just playing for the fun of it. Chikyuu was all about playing characters he liked over anything else, and winning on his own terms. KO... looks down on most people. It's why he switched to Yang in 3S. He straight up said, it's too easy to win with Yun, and that isn't any fun anymore.

There's all kinds of top competitors. What makes a champ? Winning, that's all. It doesn't matter how you act while getting there, the fact that you beat everyone else is what matters.

Shit talking and being arrogant is what made the community grow though. Back during A2-A3,2i, CvS1, early Marvel, it was all about rivalries. Viscant and a whole ton of people. Valle and Choi. Eddie Lee(who here actually knows who Eddie Lee is?) and Valle. The entire EC vs the entire WC. Duc and Valle. Nelson/Cole, Valle. Hell I had rivalries. These rivalries forced us to practice and get better, and that's what competition was. Then B5 came along, and it all disappeared. Japan vs. USA. Back then, Japan dominated us completely in everything outside of MvC2. A3 Daigo came and just owned up everyone for free. Wasn't even a joke. Dogface made an amazing post about this on SRK and I'm too lazy to find it and link. Before there were only two people. Choi, and Valle. He makes a great comment about how everyone played, and when you lost you'd think in the back of my mind "My boy could easily own this fool". And back then, that name was always "choi" or "valle". And it was truth. No one could beat them in any game, any time. Any one in any arcade in America, you could say "Choi could easilly beat this guy". or "Valle would own this guy for free" and it'd be true.

Then Japan destroyed that. Daigo nearly double perfecting both of them. Then 3S where Chikyuu, who isn't even very good, got 80 wins on basically every single top American player rotating around. Chikyuu raping America in CvS1 with RAIDEN~. Rivalries stopped. It was about beating Japan. And frankly, it killed quite a bit of the community. People stopped hardcore practicing for the next tournament because who cares if we beat the EC or if so and so won it, it didn't mean anything because it wasn't Japan.

And for this I'm thankful for MvC2. MvC2 resparked the whole rivalry thing. Everyone trying to beat wong, yipes, MM being thrown around, shit talk galore.

So you people can say whatever you want, but arrogance and shit talk is what makes this community good. As long as it's legitimate, not retarded kids on xbox-live talking about how you suck and they can beat you.

Arrogance and shit talking leads to drama and disputes and grudges.  Being an arrogant little shit back in Tekken 5.0, I know this pretty well.  If you consider that a good community, you have fun with that.  A good community to me is one where it's about the community, relationships, good games, and improving everyone's skill;not about MAINLY "legitimate" bragging rights and $$$.  I'm all for fun shit talking that hypes up a game and gets the crowd into it, but real shit talking that really is meant to insult the target is the kind of stuff I don't enjoy.

Who knows, maybe being spoiled by a great gaming community in the Philippines spoiled me and I have little to no tolerance for egos and arrogance now.

I hear enough bragging and shit talking within the Tekken community, I can't imagine listening to all the shit that goes on in all of the other games.

A community's arrogance does make it good. It leads to you wanting to prove yourself, making the game not boring. And it gives life to the game.
And the most awesome thing about LIVE is that half the players talk shit even when they lose. Even when you and your buddy are bored enough to go through a game crotch walking across a map, not killing, and trying to talk to other players while they kill each other, they do so.
The only thing I find more annoying is being talked shit about being a Team Classic Poser. Taking Control was around before Team Classic was a good, popular team you bastards!

Working Hard On (no pun intended) wise, beating CoD4 on the hardest difficulty - its actually hard. Competition wise, I am trying to sharpen my skills and competency in TF2 so I can somehow get in a CAL-O team.

To the last 10 posts about competition/smack talk/arrogance - Its all human nature. People will complain "wtf exploitz" or "cheap bastard", well, unless there are rules dictating, I rather use whatever it takes to take down someone. It might be dirty, but if he or she don't know how to counter it, they deserved to get owned. Smack talk is a double edge sword: it can be a good motivator to make someone push him or her competitive, or it can lead to low-level insults. Terrible players will be identified and laughed at or encouraged to improve, good players will be noticed, praised, envied or harassed. Good sportsmanship, regardless of the situlation, will put you higher than any smack talking person that thinks he or she knows it but lying to hide it.

I have no problems saying someone sucks but I back it up and prove it. Its the whole attitude thing that will get into people's heads and make them be hated by everyone.

I know who Eddie Lee is. :3

I barely missed the match where he beat Daigo at CvS2 back at Evo2k4. At least I think it was CvS2.

As for shit-talk, I gotta agree that it helps make competitive gaming scenes more interesting. This is true in pro sports as well. Football fans will remember how Joe Namath brashly "guaranteed" that his Jets would upset the Colts, which made that year's championship game a lot more interesting. And as much as we look back on Muhammad Ali's career with rose-colored glasses, he was a HUGE shit talker at his peak ("I'm the greatest!"), and that was part of his allure. Guys like Namath and Ali made their respective sports more interesting by putting more on the line than just wins, losses and money.

Sure it's great when people are humble and deferential in victory and defeat, but if everybody was like that, scenes would get boring real fast. It's not just the competition that makes a scene interesting, it's the varying personalities as well.

I don't know if it's real or not, but one of my favorite quotes that gets thrown around is from RTD, who was one of the best SoulCalibur 2 players back when that game was still viable. He and a bunch of players from the US went over to France for a big international team survival tourney. Just as his team's about to play, he tells his teammates:

"You guys can go get something to eat. I got this."

How do you not love that?

There were some ok people in that MvC2 tourney when I was there. Played one game and left cause it seemed it was going to take forever.

And anyone know where I can MM in Boston?.. in fact, anyone know if MvC2 exists in Boston?..-_-;

EDIT: Man, I want to get good in GG, but shit, I had it 4 years ago when it came out for the xbox. Had a fighter stick too, but it only goes so far when no one else plays it around you I guess (ie. against the comp...). Same goes for Melty Blood and Arcana Heart...*sigh.

Whoa calm down there buddy. It just came to me last night as I was posting my rant. I haven't cared to look up anything yet. And tell me when I said there weren't any people who played in Boston. Read before post.

When I said "no one to play", I was referring to 4 years ago when I was in another state half way across the country in Iowa. You know in English when you start a new paragraph you're jumping to a new idea? I was referring to when I was in Iowa City I couldn't find anyone who played that game (GGXX). And don't tell me I didn't try because I was at the University there and that's the only place. There was a Namco arcade but no fighters. I started the anime club and even brought the game and no one played.

And If you knew I just moved to Boston (as I think I mentioned or alluded to) and me mentioning getting GG FOUR years ago, use your brain and logic to figure out I'm referring to the past when I wasn't in Boston at the time. Not trying to be a dick but you're being a damn idiot and jumping the gun on me.

I haven't been working on anything lately really...... However, I can become great at any game within a matter of a few plays. This doesn't count fighting games though, because it takes longer to learn all the annoying moves and combos, so I just button mash. ;D

So mostly I can get pretty good at FPS games, RTS, RPGs, sports, racing, music, etc.

Working hard on/Competative on:
SF4 - but on and off really. I can't get into it unless I'm at the arcade or until I get my own stick. (Ryu, Cammy)

BlazBlue - don't have a favorite char to use yet but I've been picking Bang and Taokaka more recently.

Tekken 6 - I want to be more competative with this one...but damn...I stopped playing after T4...and I just don't know anything about this game anymore  :'(  (Nina, Leo)

I'm always competative with:
CVS2 (Chun, Mai, Kyo)
3S (Ryu, Urien)

Do you have it for 360 or PS3?

I am always looking for people to play on 360

my GT is the same as my forum name if you (or anyone else) wants to go a few matches

considering how different the game is from t4, you can just relearn tekken 6.
if you want to play competitively, i can help with that but just like anything it takes dedication.

While not quite console gaming, a small group of people I know along with myself are working to be competitive in DotA league games.

aaaand just realized this was originally an old thread. Good times.

Yeh, the whole dedication thing is my issue. It's not like I dislike T6, it's more like I get interested in the other games more and I end up forgetting about it. And I know it's not good enough if I end up dabbling in the game once every 2 weeks or something. Even then I end up just goofing around with it. Maybe this month I'll dedicated some time to it.

Well the only place to learn Tekken 6 properly is Sunnyvale golfland.  Let me know ahead of time if you plan to try to learn.  We have a tournament this Saturday so you can come watch.

I'm focusing on my 2v2 team right now.  I'll worry about singles later.

Once I get Platnum, me and my buddy will be working on a Tag team.
I as of yet have not decided on a 2v2 team.

Good luck!
