Title: fanime DVD?
Post by: shy-cosplayer on June 17, 2008, 07:51:25 AM
Anyone up for it?

My idea was that the fanime staff or somone could take a video camera [obviously], and document the events throughout the weekend, like the masquerade, hall cosplay, stage zero events, gatherings, do interviews, panels, etc.

And then they could sell them on the fanime website, or at next years con!

This is an idea that has been suggested every year and I continue to make a serious attempt in getting it done with each passing year... No guarantees. :)

Oh hell yeah, if someone made a Fanime DVD, I'd buy that without question, a great way to preserve memories.

I've actually got a few DVDs on my desk of the Masquerade, as well as the the Locals and An Cafe concert. Archival purposes only, though; selling the recordings = breach of contract, and getting clearance is expensive. Not to mention that all of the facilities are Union houses, and there are recording fees.

But to be honest, we forget until the day of con, when we suddenly realize we have equipment to record things.  ;D

I would definitely buy an official Fanime DVD. Maybe get a few high quality cameras out there to record various things, events and stuff. I wish all the panels could be documented but obviously that couldn't happen. But i'd buy one for a considerable amount if it had enough content.

So yeah, how much would a dvd (realistically) cost?

I would guess 15-20 dollars. But they'd have enough material on it to be worth it. People could record Masquerade, Opening and closing ceremonies, Probably not the AMV contest because then you have the whole selling merchandise that has a band's music and not paying them for it thing. Copyright laws will mess you up.

There would be enough video for it to be worth it though.

Tony's got a point about clearances, though.  You'd have to get approvals and permissions from everyone you try to record, and some of the Masquerade performances use licensed music, don't they?  And in Opening Ceremonies, sometimes the guests of honor are present and they might have issues about being recorded for sale.

$15-20. Hmmmmm
*Looks up EVO dvds (http://www.evo2k.com/dvd/) just to find a random example*
(But thats not fair to compare, because Fanime and EVO are two different events)

Yea, but I think depending on how many people would be willing to buy one, getting the clearance might be worth it. If not, then it's understandable.

But I do like seeing that Fanime is trying to get it to happen. :]
