Title: Saimoe 2008
Post by: Tsubasa on August 13, 2008, 05:46:57 PM
Saimoe 2008 prelims have just completed and the blocks are determined.  Who's going to win this year!?  Time for discussion!

Brackets @the main site (http://saimoe2008.hp.infoseek.co.jp/).  Here's the icon version (http://saimoe2008.hp.infoseek.co.jp/toname2.html), which gives little images of each character.

Notable characters for me:
Block A: Hagiwara Yukiho (IM@S), Kobushi Abiru (Zetsen), Ginga Nakajima (Nanoha StrikerS), Yami (ToLoveRu), C.C. (Geass), Yuzuhara Konomi (ToHeart2)
Block B: Nunnally Vi Britannia (Geass)
Block C: Vita (Nanoha StrikerS), Honami Takase Ambler (Rental Magica), Alicia Florence (ARIA)
Block D: Asakura Yume (D.C. II), Teana Lanster (Nanoha StrikerS), Iincho (Seto no Hanayome)
Block E: Takamachi Nanoha (Nanoha StrikerS)
Block F: Furukawa Nagisa (CLANNAD), Kusugawa Sasara (ToHeart2), Komaki Ikuno (ToHeart2), Yagami Hayate (Nanoha StrikerS)
Block G: Komaki Manaka (ToHeart2), Akabane Kureha (Night Wizard), Bell Zephyr (Night Wizard), Takatsuki Yayoi (IM@S)
Block H: Alice Carol (ARIA), Amami Haruka (IM@S)

Someone to look out for:
Block F - Hatsune Miku (Zetsen)

My top 3 picks for the tourney this year are as follow:
1. Takamachi Nanoha
2. Komaki Manaka
3. Vita

Manaka probably isn't going very far, as usual. ; ;  Nanoha or Vita could go quite far though.  Nanoha all the way!

stuff's going down!
At the top I'd say I have Akira, in two varieties.  But Miku is so cheating.

My picks, best and runner(s) up in each block:
Block A: C.C., Fate Testarossa
Block B: Elyse (El Cazador), Fujibayashi Ryou
Block C: Alicia Florence, Furukawa Sanae
Block D: Iinchou (Seto no Hanayome), Nora Arendt
Block E: Nia Teppelin, Horo (Spice and Wolf)
Block F: Furukawa Nagisa, Athena Glory, Kouzuki Kallen
Block G: Mizunashi Akari, Anya Earlstreim
Block H: Alice Carrol... not really anyone else.

I'm not really gonna rep IM@S or ToHeart2 since I haven't really played them... but there are some characters from there that I wouldn't mind seeing go fairly far.

Overall top picks:
1. Mizunashi Akari
2. Nagisa Furukawa
3. Nia Teppelin

Though I guess Alice and Alicia are pretty high up, too.

I don't think I'm going to get my way at all.

Now, the more important question: where's Masa-san?

Oooooooooooooo. Yay~ Finally a thread for it.
Hehe. I was probably one of the few voting in prelims. XD;
2nd prelim precisely cause I just remembered, just a couple weeks back, that Saimoe should be starting.

My picks:
Block A: Fuko, Fate, C.C., Kei, Hanyuu, Shiika.
Block B: Nunally, Amamiya, Ellis, Aika, Vivio
Block C: Vita, Chiaki, Tianzi, Alicia, Kaguya
Block D: Himawari, Fumika, Wilhemina, Rena, Rahzel
Block E: Shana, Ranka, Nanoha, Caro, Chiaki, Horo
Block F: Maka, Athena, Kuran kuran, Otoha
Block G: Akari, Anya, Yuki, Hinata (hotaru), Fumika (different from the one in block D), Chihiro, Yin
Block H: Ai, Tsubaki, Alice

The rest I'll decide later but these are probably for sure. Some of my faves were against each other. D:

Voting begins tomorrow, folks.  A01, A05, and A09 to be specific.  Keep an eye on the dates to vote for your characters.

I have traditionally only voted on my favorite characters, but I think I'll make it an effort this year to vote as often as possible.

Actually, shouldn't it start today? As it is already monday in Japan?

Some of my faves that I'd love to see go far, probably won't. Fumika, Rahzel, and Caro. T.T

Comments so far:

Block A:
Generally more or less pleased with the results of the first round of voting.  I can't say I terribly lament the loss of anyone so far.

Block B:
I feel gyped @B01. ; ;  And Vivio beats Haruhi.  That's right!

Block C:
C09 went more or less like I expected.  But not in the ratio I expected.  Alicia put up a good fight.  Bearing that in mind, that opens up the possibility that Louise might get eliminated by other strong contenders on her side of block C: Kyou or Yuno.

Either way, I'm still rooting for Vita to take out Kagami and take the entire block.

I was a little disappointed with A9, B6 and B9.

And B2 I am rather disappointed but I guess it wasn't too much of surprise. But Amamiya is one of the ones I'd liked to have see gone farther.

wtf how did rena get 1000+ votes? Kotomi has like 990 too, wow.
I mean I'm aware that rena is popular, but there's like a 350+ vote diff with rika, that's significant. I guess that there was competition with Maria, who also had 1000+ so it drove people to vote more.

Yeah, and that was against Maria, who also got 1000+.

Speaking of votes, I'm glad that Rein Zwei got as many votes as she did. ♥ She was bound to lose, though, putting her up against Konata.

Also, VOTE MIYAKO TODAY
Title: Re: Saimoe 2008
Post by: Tsubasa on September 01, 2008, 05:11:06 PM
Yeah, hella votes recently.  Kinda disappointed that Rein Zwei didn't win with 855 votes.  And Rena vs. Maria is just crazy.  Looks like things aren't going to cool off soon either.  Not with more high-profile contestants in the following days: Nanoha, Shana, Rei, and Horo.  Although, perhaps their matchups won't be quite as heated cause they seem to be facing decidedly less popular characters.

Comments about recent happenings:

E09 - I was kinda expecting Nia to win, but I guess this is another classic example of how "mainstream" doesn't amount to anything in Saimoe.  At least she lost to Natsumi, who's quite cute herself.

E02 - Shana won and with a healthy amount of votes, but I expected more considering her historically strong performance.  Perhaps people didn't vote cause they didn't feel a threat?  Perhaps her popularity is wavering in the light of newer characters?  I hope it's the latter.

E03 - I didn't expect Rei to lose this early.  Especially to a character from Nanatsuiro. ^^;

E05 - Liking the new Nanoha icon. :3

The results really aren't as interesting as to how someone lost/won. When you're expecting a landslide, it cuts it close. This gives hope that the final rounds might not be total garbage.
The good so far, Rei lost and Haruhi got murdered. The only two left on the hitlist is Shana and Louise, if they go, this will be a good year.

As much as I enjoy a good portion of the fanart and even enough VOCALOID songs, Miku shouldn't win in Saimoe.  I'm not going to complain that she's in the running, but there are better, more legitimate, characters that deserve votes more than she does.  IMO, if there's any justice in this world, Hayate should win F10.
Title: Re: Saimoe 2008

As much as I like Miku, I agree with most of the sentiments. The whole vocaloid series doesn't necessarily qualify for the Saimoe ranking battle, if not for Shaft's whim to find Meru's voice in that one episode. Though I would be lying if I didn't say I enjoy how little exposure in-series she got and how far it's taking off.

Also, Hooray for E12 Horo. I'm more surprised Gekka got any votes at all, given how little she shows in in Kyouran.

The fateful day is here.  9/10: F10.

It appears that the Saimoe Anti-Miku movement is popular in the Faniforums Moe Coalition.  Time to make our voiced heard.

For me, this is a win-win cause that means I'm putting in a vote for Hayate. :3

Updated this to see how I'm doing. Bold indicates more votes in round one than their round 2 competitors; Strike for eliminated. Italics for top 3.
Block A: C.C., Fate Testarossa
Block B: Elyse (El Cazador), Fujibayashi Ryou
Block C: Alicia Florence, Furukawa Sanae
Block D: Iinchou (Seto no Hanayome), Nora Arendt
Block E: Nia Teppelin, Horo (Spice and Wolf)
Block F: Furukawa Nagisa, Athena Glory, Kouzuki Kallen
Block G: Mizunashi Akari, Anya Earlstreim
Block H: Alice Carrol

Happiest surprise so far: Akari's relatively strong performance (though I guess less than 500 votes is a far shot from winning)
Greatest loss so far: Even though I listed Nia in my top 3 over Alice, I think Alice is the greater loss here.

A2-1 is an interesting and not at all unpleasant upset. Decided by 1 vote, though, wow!

I'm not going to lie. I was too lazy to post any sort of list. So I'll go by what remains right now (Since I'm already hella dissapointed at some of the knockouts as is) along with my commentary on what I'm looking for.

Summary Remnants Blocks:

A: There's almost nothing for me here. Fuko beat Fate, and that was that. I didn't really care too much for the rest.

B: Kirino has a surprisingly strong showing this year, so that's pretty happy for me. Aika got knocked out pretty quickly but at least she didn't lose to Pink-Wikipedia.

C: Vita knocked out by Shugo Chara, what the hell. Kagamin making the first shell totally expected, the second the same as well. As much as I enjoy Louise I really like Kyou a bit better so thankful for that showing. Also, what the hell, Kana beating Yuno; she's dead last on my Minami-ke list.

D: Clannad section block played out how I expected it to be; Tomoyo over Kotomi. As expected Konata won her bracket though I can't stand it, same with Rena in the other side (Which arguably only Teana was truly relevant with Maria). Miyako eating the competition is good (In more ways that one).

E: Since most of the Noble Masters girls were earlier nicked (Awww... Shinra :(), I have Shana pegged to win the 01. 02 looks interesting enough, since Nanoha takes on DECULTURE, which has be believing this is Nanoha's to win, but niconico has me with worries. I don't like Siesta, hopefully 03 belongs to Chiaki, and I'm all for Horo on 04.

F: Saki's good to win for the 01. I'm guessing Nagisa has the 02, some interesting things for the 03, since Aono from sola might have shot (but probably not enough to pull through farther). Hayate is good, but it's too bad Matsuri was in the same matchup with her. I'd like to have seen her go farther.

G: Lol Akari vs Sekai. Mid tier battle. I have Nagi and Tsukasa winning their brackets more than likely due to not only meme-age but just the character herself (Nagi). Almost nothing to see here IMO.

H:Go go Isumi; high tier- Mei is fine too but Isumi moreso. MEATOBARU-GA vs Hinagiku is interesting.

Lot of my characters were far gone already. Pretty interesting turnout for sure.

10/01: Shana steamrolls over competition. By more than double the competitors. Hatena? What the hell?

10/02: Nagisa makes second break. Also, reason for Tsubasa to still follow Saimoe is confirmed; 300 votes over DECULTURE. Only now it's Alastor v. Raising Heart in the 10/14.

Closing in on ARIA's last stand, 10/5: G2-1. I'll be sure to vote.

Out of what's left, I don't know who'll win A block or B block... C block looks pretty likely to fall in Kagamin's favor. D block, probably Rena (though I hope otherwise). E block, I doubt Horo has a chance so I'm hoping Nanoha claims it. F block, Nagisa probably. G block, I guess Nagi is probably the strongest? Maybe? (I hope she loses!) And H block, there's hardly anything I know there, so I have no idea.
Title: Re: Saimoe 2008

10/3: Chiaki was expected. Holy hell, Aono got her win too. Craaazy.

10/4: Hayate.... TIES with Yutaka, but in the end wins it. Wow. Crazy. And though Tama-chan is a good character, I would have rather seen Horo through.

Nanoha-san ga TAOSENAI...

or so I thought.

Nanoha loses to Meron-pan by 18 votes.

In other news Aono is crushed tremendously by Hayate (And to be honest, what the hell got Aono there in the first place? If Matsuri couldn't make it why her?), almost double the vote count.

Next up, Nagisa wins her round (If she doesn't I'll eat my posters), and battle between Chiaki and Tamaki.

Upon further statistics dug up (Provided by Overfunk of Animesuki, crossposted from MT):

Statitics
Nanoha/Hayate 853 votes
Shana/Aono 533
Shana/Hayate 251
Shana 203
Nanoha/Aono 77
Nanoha 39
Hayate 16
Aono 15

88% of Nanoha's voters chose Hayate
85% of Aono's voters chose Shana

Accurate fake vote info

Supposedly excluding fake vote info Nanoha would have been ahead. 1000 fake votes is nothing short of amazing.

Today's results:

Nagisa won. Enough said.

Yet another surprise from the Bamboo Blade cast, as Tamaki triumphs over Chiaki by about 200 votes.

Next up:

mDuo's last stand (Akari v. Chihiro) and Hinagiku's round to win.

Dude, we have only three series that've cleared their blocks so far: CLANNAD, Bamboo Blade, and Lucky Star.  This year hella lacks variety.

And I didn't realize Bamboo Blade was this strong.

If Nagisa wins today, that makes the finalists 5/8 KyoAni stuff. Does nobody care about other studios any more?!

You know what impression the finalists this year give me? They're like a baked potato. You're like "dang, that's a really nice steak there I'd sure love to have that" but then you see the potato and feel sorry for it because you're taking it home to microwave for lunch tomorrow.

Viable; but secondary.

Fuko
Kirino
Kagami
Tomoyo
Tamaki
Tsukasa

They don't really jump out at me. They're cool, it's just I wouldn't run to it right away. (Well... maybe for Tomoyo. But even so she's not completely top.)

I think this year's batch of quarter finalists, taken as a whole, are better than last year's.  Aside from the obvious lack of Nanoha, which sucks big time, I like the selection.  Forgetting Fuuko and Tsukasa, I like Kirino, Tamaki, Kagami, and Tomoyo.  And whoever wins, I can agree with either Hayate or Nagisa (even though Hayate is decidedly better, IMO).
Title: Re: Saimoe 2008
Post by: mDuo13 on October 22, 2008, 10:07:45 AM
My opinion is really mixed on this year's finalists. On one hand, one of my picks actually made it to the finals (!!) and there are a couple other characters I also like. On the other hand, there are at least 2 finalists (Kagami and Hinagiku) whose appeal doesn't make any sense to me. Not just, I don't like them as much as other characters, but really I don't understand, on a fundamental level, how they are moe at all. And then there are the Bamboo Blade characters (since I never watched Bamboo Blade, I can't care) and Fuuko, who's my bottom tier within her series.

That still makes it better than last year's, though.

Hayate lost, Hinagiku won.

Total Count for Top 8:
Clannad: 3 (Fuko, Tomoyo, Nagisa) [Yeah, I can see it]
Lucky Star: 2 (Tsukasa and Kagami) [KyoAni is 5 of 8 >>]
Bamboo Blade: 2 (Kirino and Tamaki) [Talk about unexpected... I should finish this series]
Hayate the Combat Butler: 1 (Hinagiku) [...of all the characters in Hayate, WHY HINAGIKU]

Finals are pretty bleh. Yeah BB is cool, Hina is cool, everyone loves clannad and raki... hell I like Kagami alot, but I mean... look at it... it's so... boring.

Here's my thoughts:

Kagami over Tomoyo
Nagisa over Tamaki
Fuuko over Tsukasa
Hinagiku over Kirino

Kagami over Nagisa
Hinagiku over Fuuko

Kagami will win but it will be a close call.

Washimiya, Saitama, Japan 11/02/08 - Foul Play Under Perfect Cherry Blossoms

In the quiet prefecture of Saitama, one would never expect a single object to be out of place; the clean, yet charming city has a simplistic motif about it, as if you could dance in an intersection or hop on one leg. Through the city, you might even say a simple stroll along the streets could provoke one's appetite for a chocolate cornet. But the focal point of this particular excursion; one of Japan's oldest shrines, the Washinomiya Shrine. Amongst the variously decorated emas wishing some honor twins and meatball loving girls birthdays, a simple family resides. However, this is not a visit of pure curiosity-- but of convicted murder. Professional Shrine Maiden Victim Tsukasa Hiiragi, was found outside of Washinomiya Shrine on September 2nd, 2008. She is believed to be, given her stature and appearance, an Akari Kamigishi cosplayer.

Police officials apprehended young tsundere K.H., whose name has been initialized to protect the related. Investigators say the murder took place amidst a heated popularity contest dubbed "Saimoe", in which girls fight one another for the title of "Top Turn On". Participants are predominantly anonymous and awards are given in secretive fashion, but vigorously fact-checked for their audience. This period of "moe" is quoted, "Serious F*king Business".  Police believe during this period of time K.H. was able to apprehend Tsukasa over a possible blackmail statement made during K.H.'s mid-afternoon nap. The statement overheard by related family members is speculated to be "I would like to [make a hot sandwich] with my friend Konata". During this time Tsukasa, dazed by such a surprising statement, hurrily tried to escape the situation, and changed into her cosplay outfit. In midst of the escape she came across a bottle of balsamic vinegar, and recited a strange sentence ender. It is in this time K.H. is believed to have shot once to end her life.

"It is a sad occurrence," commented bystander 'Sebastian'. "I feel like I've F-F-F-Forgotten how to cry."

"I din' think this kind of thing would happen--VA," expressed schoolmate Misao K. in a follow up interview while eating a bento box. "No one's gotta realize how crazy this is --IYA. All we can say is Hiiragi [Tsukasa]'s probably in the fancy Vinegar Isle in the sky while [K.H.] is headed to the big, steel caged Bread Factory--DA ZE." Further comment could not be reached, due to a breach of a "3 second rule, MEATBARU-GAAAAA>_<".

"It is an unfortunate turn of events," expressed Miyuki Takara, also a schoolmate at the local high school in which K.H. and Tsukasa Hiiragi attended. "Unless she is given a fair trial and truly substantial evidence claims, I believe this is unfortunately a wrapped up case. However, many people believe that the tampering of evidence is an improbable turn of events that cannot happen in such substantiated conditions. However, on average most of today's conclusive evidence can no longer be excised as relevant, and many related investigations are left with such invalid evidence. In this case the probability of a guilty verdict could possibly be finite, given an actual piece of conclusive evidence has been restored to court records. Also, on wikipedia a crime sentence can vary anywhere from a single day to a lifetime, which could be expertly identified with a certified judge and an experienced prosecution. Moral health is important but also a physical diet can trigger signs of murderous disress. Often the diet of a convicted convict can be misinterpreted because of the various approaches to eating genetically created food, though the nutritional content can be argued [...] ...and that is why a cornet is shaped with a cone in mind." Takara's comment has been modified to avoid wikipedia copyright infringements.

Possible accomplice and mentioned post-mortem Konata I. could not be reached for comment, due to shopping circumstances at an art supply store and a last-will-and-testament stationary shop. She was last seen leaving Akihabara with a full-body pillow and print outs of fan-created manga, "Kagamin Bocchi". Research officials speculate an intimate relationship between the two suspects, and cite sources "Danbooru" and "fanfiction.net" in their complete validity.

The parents of Tsukasa Hiiragi could not be contacted.

Court proceedings are expected to begin next week after an awards ceremony given H.K.'s recent victory. Pre-trial sentence speculations are Comiket 100 to life in prison. Officials have released the following piece of evidence to the general public for any avaliable speculation and information in regards to the murder below:

(https://forums.fanime.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg112.imageshack.us%2Fimg112%2F189%2F7a7294e59684a7ae3b0e350hb3.gif&hash=ec516bcb81e1517fccee6fd484dbc2fc8d9d59e5)

Funeral services are planned to be held at shrine, 7:30 AM. Family members and friends are invited to come with various breads and salads to honor a life that was cut too short... balsamic vinegar.
