KOTOR MMO Announced (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6199726.html?tag=latestheadlines;title;1)

Oh yes. This is exciting. And I don't even play MMORPGs, I will be making an exception though for this.

Hopefully they don't mess it up such as with Galaxies. >_< I never played it, but those I know who did said it was horrible.

Luckily, it's Bioware developing it, so we stand a good chance of a decent game at least, going by their pedigree.

However, we ultimately won't find out until the game hits shelves.

Yup. I'm curious how they'll handle becoming a Jedi/Sith.

YOu should read the Darth Bane books, since they're from that time period!! Although I think it's a earlier then the game, but I'm not sure. I'm halfway through the first book and it's REALLY good stuff to!! <3

Mwahahaha...Now is the chance for me, Darth Meos, to bring darkness to the galaxy with an iron fist!

I say we make an anti-jedi council. Like, a Sith Council or something.

Same here  :)
I heard Galaxies was good until they let everyone be a Jedi (then it just sorta plummeted).  But I haven't really gotten into any MMOs before so...

Galaxies was ok until they let everyone be a Jedi later on when you install game the computer before you had to do certain missions but now you can easily become a Jedi. My friend has Galaxies and he told me that the game was getting stupid little by little.

Actually if you read up on the issue, it's MUCH worse then that. Being a Jedi or Sith meant that you had to master AT LEAST 4 paths. Only 3 of which you could get through rare Jedi/Sith holocrons. Meaning you might have to master 5+ paths.

Oh let's not forget they removed most of the classes, INVALIDATING many people's hard work over the years.

Oh FURTHERMORE the released an expansion with new classes and other goodies...even though two weeks later they removed almost all of it with their "Upgrade". They oversimplified things and totally screwed up the game for a lot of the veteran players, all to make it more user-friendly for the new ones.

Holocrons were the start of the path to darkness for that game. They should have never let people know what they had to do to unlock Jedi. I did 31 out 32 professions to get mine. The total was only 5 but which 5 was the key.

It being hidden and something you might have just stumbled upon was so much better than knowing you had to mindlessly grind everything under the sun or just rolling a Jedi whenever you wanted after the NGE.

At least with ToR Jedi are expected to be a starting thing or something gained similar to KoToR.

Yeah, that's what I heard about that I liked.
Having you play the game as if it didn't even have force capabilities, and then maybe-maybe not getting to become a Jedi/Sith.

I never really looked into the previous game because  :P
a) never been big on MMORPGs (but I've only had a system I could actually PLAY one on recently)
b) while I started out my early years a Star Wars fan, I actually fell out of the swing of things.  Well, until these past several months, I'd say.
I blame that on my roommate having all these awesome SW comics for me to read  XD

Heck yes they are amazing! And actually they take place after this game if I remember correctly. This game takes place 500 years after KotOR while the Darth Bane duology takes place 3000 years.

I know it's something like that. Although Darth Bane is really the closest we come to learning much about that era in any real detail, other then some bits and pieces you might read from some of the roleplaying books...

The books have the feeling of an exact KotOR sequel since they're written by one of the main writers of KotOR. I really hope he continues them by making a Zannah series. She is such an awesomely ruthless Sith. :)

But back on topic. My friend and I are already making a pact that we'll be on opposite sides, yet stay allies.

lol thinking I only want to read them because he's into them (sorta-kinda seeing each other, but nothing official  T_T way to complicate things, right?  lol), especially since he knows I know Darth Bane is one of his favorite characteres  :P

ANYWAY!
He's going to let me borrow them, but he's having me go through the Tales of the Jedi first (and I have to finish the second KotOR game before he'll let me read the Bane books  lmao)

I never finished either of the KoTOR games...or even played much of them...

Although I'm trying to get my friends to join the Dark Brotherhood FTW!

Dark Brotherhood... brings back memories of yonder. ;_; Oh how I miss them.

ANyway, anyone who hasn't played the first KotOR I recommend playing it. The story is great and allows for 4 fairly unique play throughs.

I'm playing it right now  :)   But I've seen it played-through by other people a few times before.
I like Bioware, they make good games that really get you into the world.

I never played Dark Brotherhood, though.  What's that one about?

Nope. KotOR I and II have computer versions that are way better since there is a huge modding community out there for them.

Hmmm...well then I'll have to be looking into acquiring those products...Now if only I can roll well enough on my Use Force Check for Force Persuasion I might be able to get a friend to buy it for me...

Indeed it is. And my group seems to be enjoying it much more then 4ed. To bad, I actually like for 4ed, and it sucks that no one in my group but me likes it. Though I still prefer 3.5 to 4ed, the change in pace was very nice.

I dunno I remember in one of those games it was pretty hard to fight that giant beastie from Star Wars: Return of The Jedi. I hate to cheat like HELL by going into a the other side where he couldn't get me, and bombing the crap out of him with thermal detonators T_T

That was in the sewers of Kotor 1. The trick is to place a grenade and a vile of some rancor scent in the pile of corpses. It will come over eat the bomb and blow up.

Here's some background to the story of The Old Republic.

Quote
The Galactic Republic stood for generations as a bastion of peace in a galaxy of warring star systems. Protected by its stalwart Jedi guardians, the Republic held the greatest hope for the progress of civilization and galactic unity.

Deep in unknown space, however, a mighty Sith Empire was forged, led by dark Sith Lords who dreamt of galactic domination and vengeance against their ancient Jedi enemies. After centuries of preparation, the time came for the Sith to make their return.

With a massive fleet and an awe-inspiring army of fearless troops, the Sith Emperor launched a surprise assault, quickly capturing dozens of worlds in the Outer Rim, and sparking a war unlike any other in the galaxy's history.

From the frozen wastes of Ilum to the desert plains of Dathomir, violent battles killed untold millions. Despite its avowed neutrality, surface structures on the water-covered world of Manaan were completely destroyed, forcing the Selkath to retreat to their ocean underworld. Other star systems fared worse—some destroyed, others left uninhabitable. The carnage concluded with the Sith Empire sacking the Republic's capital planet of Coruscant and forcing the Republic Senate into the controversial Treaty of Coruscant.

In the years since the treaty, fear and uncertainty have gripped the galaxy, enabling the Sith Emperor to pursue his own mysterious purposes while the Republic has made efforts to rebuild its infrastructure and adjust military priorities to the new galactic landscape.

Now, tensions between the Republic and the Empire are running high, and a series of border skirmishes and proxy wars have broken out, even on planets as historically peaceful as Alderaan. The uneasy truce established by the Treaty of Coruscant is quickly tearing apart at the seams, and a return to all-out war has begun in all but official terms.

A new generation of heroes, both light and dark, emerges to face the difficulties of these chaotic times, and fight for the fate of the galaxy in this most desperate age.

Builds a few questions for me:
1. The game is going to be heavily story driven, how will this work in a universe that supposedly is going to constantly change?
2. How will becoming a Jedi/Sith work?
3. You'll have a choice of many different companions and this varies from the choices you make, will others be able to see your companions? I think it would be weird to see a million of the same companions running around.
4. WHEN WILL IT COME OUT?!
