I remember seeing a thread where some stated that the best foods to pack were the foods that are best consumed cold. Onigiri sounds perfect. I've never made it though and so far the only type of filling I know of is the salted salmon. Any one have any advice? Like what other fillings are there, how to make them, and most importantly how to store them? I know I'm not supposed to pack them with the nori on them but how long do I have until they start to go bad? I'm planning to make alot so I might make them over night.
Red bean is common too, also seaweed paste, or that's how my dad makes it. They can usually stay good for atleast a day when wrapped in saran wrap, anymore you should put it in a little container with some ice.
Suppose I was going to make +24, how would I store them in the cooler? could I stack them on each other or would I need a make shift rack inside of the cooler?

I just stack them if there's that many.
Salmon, Pickled Plum (umeboshi), Steak bits and even chicken are some fillings inside, along with hot dog slices
My friend made killer veggie onigiri X) I love salmon in my filling
I normally make my own with umeboshi, but since not everyone likes umeboshi, I either fill them with pickled vegetables or marinated salted-tuna. I have a mold for making onigiri, but I still feel you should work the rice with your hands first. It's pretty simple.
Take the amount of rice you want in a big bowl or something so you can grab from it. Lay a sheet of saran wrap on the table to wrap the onigiri with. Wet your hands so they're moist, put some salt in them and rub your hands together before handling the rice so it'll help add flavor to the blandness of rice and keep it from sticking to your hands. Mold the rice into the general ball shape, put it on on the saran wrap, push in a hole in the middle and fill it with whatever you want, then cover it up with more rice. Then, make the shape neater by fixing it up by molding it with the saran wrap as you wrap the entire thing for storage.
What I like to do is top the rice with furikake for flavor and color. Sometimes, depending on what type of furikake you get, mixing the rice together with them stains the rice with colors like pink, purple, green, etc naturally.
I guess it's kind of difficult to explain exactly without visuals, but hopefully that was clear enough. Normally, you store the onigiri itself separate from nori because the nori will become soggy if left on the rice for too long. Just wrap it with nori when you're ready to eat it. I normally buy a pack or two of plastic made for wrapping onigiri with a separate compartment for nori.
It's all generally pretty easy, so I'm sure you can figure it out yourself. Sorry if I made things a bit complicated, but since it is a very simple snack, it's nice to add things here and there so it tastes good. I'm normally too lazy to make onigiri these days, and I feel that it's pretty much the same taste to just pack some rice and things to eat with it. lol
Never had a Onigiri before
(._.)
It's actually pretty easy to make (did it at a Japanese cultural thingy at my University). All you need is like... different stuff in your rice, take a seaweed, and make it look like it's a triangle...

And oh yeah. The whole thing about using the saran wrap... yeah. For the love of God use it unless you plan to turn your own hand into an onigiri..-_-;
You must tell me where to find you if you make onigiri!!
I haven't had onigiri in forever! T_T
Again, onigiri is supposed to be a very simple snack to make. Take rice out of the cooker, mold it into a ball, fill it with whatever sh*t you want, wrap in nori. The description I gave above is just more detailed and has tips as to how to make it decently. w
It's convenient to bring around with you once you're done, but if you don't want to go through the trouble if you're just going to eat it right afterwards anyway, just eat whatever you'd fill it with in a bowl of rice. It tastes about the same. o_0
I dun have a rice cooker...and I sorta have a defunct kitchen....Can't stick anything that will freeze in the fridge...cuz it freezes everything. @_@

Sure, why not. I don't remember how far you lived though.
But yeah, as an Asian, rice-cookers are essential. Go buy one, plug it in, keep a good supply of rice handy. It goes with everything. :U

Plain rice is enough. (Seaweed Included)
A dash of salt is all it needs.
Frankly, stuff short-grain rice into a small shape and add a piece of nori for wrapping.

Yeah don't worry, it all made sense to me. It is pretty easy, that's why I chose it. Simple enough for someone as inexperienced as me to make but has enough aesthetic pass off as a homemade meal :D. My friends told me last fanime they were starving and dead broke the whole weekend, living off the free apples available around the hotel :'(. That's pretty sad, considering that most of them are 18-20, srsly guys wtf...
Anyways the last thing that concerns me still is storing them.

I guess I'll have to wrap all +24 individually @_@. But I'm worried that if I stack them in the cooler then the bottom row will lose it's shape under the weight. or by the time the ice melts it will have seeped into all +24 rice balls. Also if onigiri is only good for about a day outside, how long does it have till it rots in the fridge?

The reason I'm making these is so me and my friends can go snacking around the con whenever we get hungry but the real reason I'm producing them in mass quantities is because I'm planning to have a picnic sometime during the con. I'm thinking of making that dango stuff also. I'll probably make too much though so if you see us feel free to chill with us. It shouldn't be hard to find us. We'll be smashing water melons. delicious ;D

Traditionally rice weren't made with rice cookers..-_-;
Just grab a pot, fill it with rice and water, and let it go with a little room for steam to come out. It's not hard really.
While this is true, it's too much work for lazy people like me. I just want to quickly wash my rice, dump it in a rice cooker and have it alert me when it's done. Plus, rice cookers can keep the rice warm without making it dry too quickly.
I normally add a dash of salt and some vegetable oil with the water it's cooking in. People who cook rice with chicken broth are ingrates. fffffffffff
But uh, yeah, I feel sort of weird to make onigiri just to bring to Fanime. I might need to sneak it to you in hopes it isn't seen by hordes of rabid weeaboos asking "CAN I HAVE ONE?!?!?!" But it's pretty easy to make. I guess I could. I'm not a complete d*ck like my boyfriend. =P

With a rice cooker?
They come with instructions you know...-_-;
Like it shows you where to fill your water up to with each little cup of rice.
In reality though, you should fill a little more water than what the rice cooker tells you to fill. Once you get good at it, you can make judgments on your own and fill to where it fits.
I also prefer Jasmine rice.

How the Foreigners Do it: Add water to line according to number of cups you put in, click button.
How the Asians Do it: (Optional: Wash white rice up to 3 times in tap water, swishing lightly to remove excess powder/processing grains) Alternatively you can put your hand down flat on top of the rice and fill it with water until it raises to your knuckles.
A little less for harder, drier rice, and a little more with Chinese sausage on top (Due to moisture content).

You take the amount of rice you want in the cooker (1 cup is approximately a standard bowl of rice.), rinse it with water, wash it with your hands thoroughly, drain, repeat until the water becomes clearer, then add water (If it's Jasmine rice, the water should be about 3 centimeters--------------

Hell, if you want I could make it with you! X3 If that doesn't make you feel weird, and I could pick it up. So "weeaboos" don't harass you. O_o
I may have seen this before...but someone pm me the explanation of a "weeaboo"?
(oh and I am not comparing lack of food/pitying, it's the fridge. It freezes up everything!! >:( Like I said I live in a very Rural area. Where Bible toting Nazis fester like a plague....)
Anyone remotely obsessed with japanese culture is considered a weeaboo. Whether you see this as a derogatory term is up to you. The fact that I'm bringing onigiri to a picnic instead of hotdogs and burgers makes me a weeaboo. I don't even know why I'm going out of my way to make something like this for my friends when I know they wouldn't mind just eating slop out of a bucket :-\. Seriously we eat like beast. What we do to food might not even be legal in some states.
Oh.... That's a new one for me. ???
lol I asked for a pm cuz I've been derailing topics all night. O_o
You may want to make more then 24 onigiri if your friends eat like that! XD
It's +24, so I'll be making 24 and probably more if my budget will allow it. I'm not sure how much rice will I need or if I'll even have enough to buy the salmon and stuff. If it comes down to it i'll be sticking random shit into those rice balls. like peanut butter, pieces of fruit, OATS, more rice, wasabi, whatevers lying around... god I love OATS.

Have you seen the S'mores they made during their camping trip? or the bento box daniel sat on the last time we had a picnic, not to mention the watermelon we broke open with our muay thai strikes and baseball bats. or that thing we all mashed with lorina at the airport. I just thought it'd be cool if we tried to eat something that resembled a meal.
Btw dry ice... doesnt melt right?
hmm i guess from our experiences... lets make sure that daniel is not in charge of cooking anything.
ohh and because fanime always falls on my birthday (may 24) i was thinking that we should have a little party for me at fanime anime style. this time, i was thinking of baking a cake and decorating it gurren lagann with a drill candle like i saw in the picture with yoko from the /byo thing. ohh and since im cosplaying nia i should try to make some of her cooking from the nia portraits book i have at home. lol (ill try to make it edible at the least)
WE WILL EAT SOMETHING GOOD THIS FANIME! i promise guys! besides its nia who is cooking lol ::)
... you're gonna bake the cake for your own birth day? It'll be better if it was a surprise. Let me and daniel do it. We'll bake you a stripper in a cake, and we'll even take out the bones :D.
eww.... ok that struck a nerve in my system (throws up) ok.. you bake the cake and ill decorate it. not that hard to do lol. lets make it a potluck but then again, people might ask for food if we do it in the public >:(

Auuuuggghhh, don't make me get into this conversation.
Stephanie can't tsuntsun even if she tried. Mizuki is too weak and adorable to tsuntsun properly, but because of his pathetic, useless, wimpy, frail, girly, cute, and adorable appearance, it'd strike the average person to be surprised if he suddenly went apesh*t and stabbing your mother, this makes him qualified to be yandere. He's also normal enough that the psychoticness would be damaging and something he'd be disgusted with later, possibly a side of self-loathing, rather than full on stark insanity. Too bad he's so weak and girly, he probably wouldn't even be able to stab butter all the way through.
Mikey is quite elitist about the terms, but he insists that I'm a tsundere, but I just tell him to shut the f*ck up and smack him in the windpipe. Regardless, my deredere is quite strong.
