Title: Dungeons & Dragons
Post by: TC X0 Lt 0X on December 15, 2008, 09:30:00 PM
Who plays?
How long have you been playing?
What version or versions do you play?

I've played 3rd/3.5 for 6 years. I refuse to play WoW the RPG aka 4th ed.

I'm usually stuck as the DM, but on the rare occasions that I get to be a PC, I usually rock a human Monk or a dwarven Cleric.

I used to play, but my dungeon master kicked me out for killing spider god......which his character apparently worshiped....

Sounds like bad DMing to me.

Wow. This is going to make me feel a little old...

But I've been playing since AD&D 2'nd Edition. I have a full set of books for that.

I also have an almost full set of D&D 3.5e.

And a few books and campaigns for the MMORPG (Minimal Multiplayer Offline Role Playing Game) D&D 4e.

Right now I am trying to decide whether to start a group of friends off with something easy (3.5) or go right into the THAC0 (2'nd)

I have been playing for almost 3 years.
I play 3.5, as well as 4e. Some other TTRPGs I play are SW Saga, Hackmaster, D20 Modern, as well as a few others.
My Offline group is not much for the roleplaying part, and the games end up devolving to almost Hack'n'Slash games. I do play online however, where I get most of my RPing needs.

I currently play D&D 3.5.  I played 2nd Ed back in Elementary School, and tried 4th Ed, but don't like it at all.  Too little customizability in the characters.  I also play White Wolf (everything except Hunter and Demon), Shadowrun (3rd & 4th), SLA Industries, D20 Modern, Fallout RPG, and Deadlands.  Probably a couple others that I forgot.  Love the stuff.  Currently in about 4 tabletop campaigns, and a dozen online play-by-post campaigns.  Good times.

Well, it'd probably be easier to find the group here first, so everyone can make their characters prior to the game. That way, we save time when we actually sit down to play.

TC_X0_Lt_0X - I really couldn't stand most of the players in the Tolarian Academy thread.  Loves the DM-ing, and the general idea, but it felt like I was really back in high school.  And I hated high school.  College was somewhat better, mainly because I was in a serious science program, so there was less rough-housing and stupidity.  And there were 20-odd players, so I was lost in the threads by the third day.

I signed up for the D&D game last year too, but had the same problem of not being able to meet up with people.  I second the motion to A) have signs, and B) set up the meeting place and stick there in case someone is running somewhat late.

Indeed. Plus with nearly 1000 posts within a week, it was no doubt difficult at best to keep up with. The one person who irritated me in the game was Jim Profit's Character. He kinda imploded on himself. But the guy is banned now, so it's no wonder.
Right now the game is at a near stand still however, which kind-of sucks. O-well, thats what happen with most PbP games anyways.

Sadly true.  I've got a couple games that are progressing, but most of my games die rather quickly, either through the PCs dropping out, or the DM disappearing off the face of the earth.

Well lets see I've been playing DnD from about 10 years now roughly half my life I usually DM but that cause I get stuck with it.  :-\ anyways I have a ton of 3.5 books on my laptop (willing to share with anyone) and I refuse to play 4ed. Also, I'm almost always down for a game (assuming in fits my schedule. having skool and work sucks.)

Half the fun is playing a character that you made. Also, 4e is garbage. It's books work better as frisbees or bludgeoning tools than they do as rule books.

Back to the original question: I've been playing dnd with my friends only for about 2 years at most. We started with 3.5, I used to play as a character. We've gone through atleast 5 campaigns until we did a star wars campaign that failed. I started DMing, so I dm 2/3 of our campaigns. We've done Modern, 4e, LOTR d6, Star Wars roleplaying game... and a whole host of campaigns. >.> Currently on our LOTR Campaign.

Yeah if a dnd thing is going to be down I suggest the DM to be lays down some rules so characters can be made.

I'd be up for it if someone wanted to do 4e.  I've never played but I'm trying to pick up the game, and I figure I might as well start with the newest edition.  I am aware of the arguments for 3.5 over 4, but not being familiar with 3.5 at all, they don't really seem to mean anything to me.

I've been playing and really enjoying 4th Edition since it came out. I experimented with prior editions (from AD&D1e onward), but none of them really did anything for me.

I don't know how to DM (more than any other RPG I've played, DMing and playing are two separate skills), but if someone wants to run a game at the con I'd definitely be interested.

Title: Re: Dungeons & Dragons

I'm an oddity among roleplayers. I've GM'd more games then I've played(By what I imagine is a 3 to 1 ratio) and my system experience is largely in: Exalted(1 and 2E) , Shadowrun, Alternity(Hell yeah), Cyberpunk, and a smattering of little bits and pieces of D&D(2nd edition - 4th) along with extensive experience to a local homebrew system in the bay area.

While I've done a lot of GM'ing in my time, I'd be more interested in just being a player. That's not to say I'm adverse to the idea of running a game. However, unlike most other people, I have limited experience with D&D. Not that it'd be hard for me to slap together something for it.
Title: Re: Dungeons & Dragons
Post by: neko ewen on April 21, 2009, 01:17:29 PM
Yeah, I don't know D&D well enough from the DM's side to run it, but there are plenty of other games I could run, including Maid RPG. :3

Okay if we're going to play some DnD at the Con lets pick a time and date. Figure out who's DMing, what we're playing, and what edition.

Also PM me if you need/want D&D 3.5e books since I'm willing to share ;) the books I have...on my laptop. and if need be I'll bring my 4e  :-\ books with me to the con.
Title: Re: Dungeons & Dragons
Post by: neko ewen on May 04, 2009, 02:21:29 PM
My preference is for 4e since I know it a whole lot better than 3.x, but if someone's willing to bring a 3.x character for me to use I'll be happy to join in regardless. (And even if it is 4e, whoever's running it needs to decide what kind of characters would be appropriate, or do pregens or something.)

At the moment I don't have any plans to speak of nailed down for the convention, so any time during any of the four days is potentially workable for me.

Does Sunday around 10 or 11pm sound good? I can DM if nobody wants to but I'm not to familiar with 4e. So I prefer to DM 3.5e but I can try 4e.

Also a helpful site:
DnD 3.5e Indexes (Really everything you need to make a character) http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/index.php
and if some body wants me to them a character just PM me the details (Race, Class, and anything other details) and I'll set you up.

So then, if you plan to DM, what exactly our we going to do?
I got nearly every (3.5) adventure on PDF, so if you need one you can ask.

I'd be up for 3.5, not really a fan of 4e. My schedule is flexible, so Sunday night would work well enough for me.

I really want to get in on a game of either 3.5 or 4.0, and can bring supplies such as minis and dungeon tiles, but I have obligations elsewhere in the con on Sunday night.  Does anyone plan on running a table Saturday or Sunday afternoon?

Well unless someone else decides to DM a game or Havok decides to run at those times too, it is highly unlikely.

Personally the only reason I want to have a D&D game is because it would be nice for one to be at Con. Sure I do it half the time in my free time, and I can be doing something else at a Convention, but it seems like a good idea to me. And thats the main reason we are doing it on Sunday at night: The only other events are late night panels and the Dance, after the Ball and MusicFest of course.

And we do need to figure out some guidelines for characters. What level we will be playing, starting gold, etc.
I just better not see any Vampires. My usual RL games have a Vampire in them because the other players love playing them. Why they can't settle for a Human or Dwarf or something is beyond me.

EDIT:
And i'll remember to bring my Rules Compendium with me, as it can be very useful when a ruleing or rule is needed for clarification IG.

Well Sunday night is the best for me since I'm getting settle in on Friday(and going to the hentai room ;)). I'm got plans on Saturday night (come see me preform stand up ;D) and I'm sure that everybody wants to go to panels, shop, and whatnot during the day.

Of course I won't mind try a bit of maid RPG do to sheer WTF? factor. As for me DMing that's IF no one else wants to. So if you want to DM anything please say so! But if DM duties fall to me it'll be 3.5e; Since I don't have any xp in DMing 4e, though I wouldn't mind playing a 4e game. I'll have exact details next week and I'll PM my contact info to everyone who wants to play, but for now lets just see who want to play.

Hey guys, first time poster and second time Fanimer here.

I read up on your foum and it looks like your interested in trying to get a 4.0 D&D session going. I would not mind stepping up to DM. I actually DM for a group of 5-8 every week, in case you wanted credientals. My friend and I both play and will be at Fanime. If your interested in me running. Let me know through here or email me so I can get details set up. Looking forward to hearing from you guys soon

Only here will anyone get this....
In class we were talking about pyramids and one gal siad there's a whole nother pyramid underneath ( there isn't) and that they should be called diamond , not pyramids. I pointed out that there isn';t a whole nother pyramid underneath ( just SOME tunnels) and anyway it would be a ocehedron anyway. She didn't know what a ocehedron was and I said that's because you've never had to make a saving throw as a elf. Nobody got that one. ;(

@azor12:
As I said upthread, I prefer 4e since I know it a hell of a lot better. I'm potentially available most any time during the con. If you're going to run it, let me know what kind of character to bring (I can whip something up in the character builder pretty quickly).

If we can settle on a time I'll definitely be happy to run a session of Maid RPG as well. I'll probably do a random-event-driven game for 2-3 hours. IMO that's the best way to experience how insane Maid RPG can really be.

Cool.
I can play 4e, though I do prefer 3.5.
I can whip up a character at home, so all I need is the info to make it.

As for Neko, I'm up to be in your Maid RPG game.
I have a interest to see how it works, and as long as its at a time that does not conflict with my schedule (like early morning or late night), then I should be able to go.

Again, if this was done Sunday afternoon so that I could go and fulfil other obligations that I have at 8pm, I would happily come to this as it sounds quite good.  I would volunteer for the striker role with an elf rogue and bring power cards, minis, etc.

Sunday afternoon, level 8-10 works for me too. :3 I'll bring a warlord, which will cover the leader role, unless someone else really wants that. Let us know what specific level of characters to bring though. Oh, also, do you want characters to use backgrounds, and if so what kind?

For Maid RPG, how does Friday or Saturday afternoon sound? Like I said, it'd probably go for 3 hours or so. I would prefer to start in the afternoon because while Maid RPG can be a zero-prep game, it's about as high-energy as RPGs get, and that's when I'll be the most awake.

Friday or Saturday afternoon sound good to me as far as Maid RPG goes.  Leaning towards Friday since not as much happens on Friday as it does Saturday.  Can we bring our own characters, or are we doing chargen at the start?

Alright Well looks like I finally get to play 4e and Maid RPG. So who should we swap contact info and what not? I'd make it a lot easier to find each other at the con. Character wise, I was thinking of making a Half Elf Bard or a Warlord. Also is there any prep needed for maid RPG?
Title: Re: Dungeons & Dragons
Post by: neko ewen on May 10, 2009, 08:23:10 PM
I'm doing a random-event-driven thing for Maid RPG, so even I can't really prepare beyond bringing character sheets.

So, the RPG group we've got going is: me, TC_X0_Lt_0X, azor12, doriangray, Stormfalcon, and havok rt? Any more than 5-6 players and Maid RPG will start to get unwieldy, though I'll let whoever's running it decide how many people to let into the D&D4e game. We can exchange contact info by PMs.

Maybe we could meet up on Friday or Saturday afternoon, shoot the breeze for a while (maybe get lunch) and then do Maid RPG?
Title: Re: Dungeons & Dragons

If we do anything Friday, and likely at anytime during Con, I will probably have 1, maybe 2 people attached to me. 1 will likely be un-removable, the other can be removed but is into TRPGs. So it may get a little crowded when/if I'm in a game. Though I'm not sure if either will want to play, I assume they will if they stay with me. Just pointing that out.

I agree with neko ewen, we should meet up, grab a bite to eat (lunch/dinner), introduce ourselves, you know get to know each other a bit, and then play some RPGs? Anyways seeing as neko ewan called warlord earlier I'm going to make me a Ranger 2blade variant. And since I normally don't play on tiles or with miniatures; if nobody minds, I'm going to use my lil' 2inch Deadpool toy ;D.Anyways I'll PM you folks my contact info in a bit.

I'll make a back up Warden. Since I was torn between that and the ranger, so if we don't have a defender by game time I'll change roles.

I was wondering, azor12, would you allow me to use the Artificer playtest from Dragon 365? And more specifically, would you allow me to multiclass into it? The multiclass feat can be really simple too. Perhaps grant 1 skill from the Artificer's spell list and Ritual Caster ability. They have a feat that is exactly the same thing for Wizards in Arcane Power, called Learned Spellcaster.
If not I will probably multiclass Swordmage or Wizard. Or just play a Kobold Sorcerer. A classic.

According to RPGA guidelines: one magic item of your level +1, One magic item of your level, one magic item of your level -1, and then gold equal to an item of your level-1.

Depends on when we start and how long that would be.  I have obligations at 8pm and might need a running start before that so that I'm not late.  However, I'm not above just handing over my character sheet to one of the other players if needed.
Title: Re: Dungeons & Dragons

My preference would be for a shorter adventure. Much as I love 4e, I don't find speed to be among its virtues. Oh, and I forgot to ask again, but did you want to use background traits? (As in, the special character traits that give minor bonuses, seen in Scales of War, Forgotten Realms, and now PHB2? And if so which versions?)

So, the plan is to meet up on Saturday, get lunch together, and then play Maid RPG, and after that meet up on Sunday to throw down with D&D4e. What time should we meet up on Saturday? Since we're planning to do lunch I'd say 11:30 or noon, so we can get enfoodened and play Maid RPG and such before the Masquerade (or whatever other major events) begins. We also need to think about a place to eat that can accommodate a party of 6-7 people during the con.

After finding out there will be DND at Fanime, my love for Fanime has grown even more.

This year will be my third time at Fanime. Didn't go last year because I totally forgot about it until the weekend of. I also started playing DND with 2 groups (3.5e and Modern) last year.

Just a question about how it's run at Fanime:
Will there be premade characters to play, will we be making new ones there, or will we be using existing characters?

All in all, me and a friend are both super excited about this year.

See you guys there!

Checking the bus/light rail schedules, I most likely won't be at the con until 11:30-11:45'ish.  If 11:30, I'll try to meet up with you guys at Peggy Sue's and snag a lunch to take back.  If not, then I'll meet you at the game room.

Hey guys, DnD was a wicked bust today. The DnD guys showed up and delayed the event until midnight then didn't do anything but lend out books.

Tomorrow (sunday) they're gonna be there at 10:00pm. I'm gonna try and get some people together and actually get some dnd4.0 goin'. It's a real simple system and easy to jump into. If you're interested drop me an email at [email protected] and i'll get back to you. If worse comes to worse, i have my own books on my laptop and we can ghetto it for a little bit. If i get overwhelming response we'll...work from there. I'm willing to GM 4-5 people.

Running Maid RPG and playing D&D were the highlights of this year's con for me. Thanks to everyone for making it memorable! ^_^

Well it would have been a lot better if we didn't have a retarded mage who fought with brick instead of spells but let us never speak of him again.

~pops into thread~

Yoho~ I've been playing since 2001 but my groups has gotten inactive the last couple years. I've played 2nd ed, 3rd ed and 3.5; Additionally, I have played some World of Darkness.

I've looked at 4th ed books but have yet to play a game. I'm hoping to get in on some games with a few friends though I have to see if that pans out.

At the rate things are going, I'd be attending Fanime next year mainly for RPG action, so I'll be talking to some of you guys (as well as the tabletop gaming department) when we get a little closer to the con.

Maid RPG is a no-brainer, but Tenra Bansho Zero (http://www.tenra-rpg.com/) should be out by then, and I will hopefully have another SEEKRIT Japanese RPG project at least ready to demo. There are also Bliss Stage, Panty Explosion, and a few others that could fit in at FanimeCon pretty well. :3

It depends on how long it takes me to get around to harassing Andy K. and Ben Lehman to get together on Skype to record an episode about Maid RPG. I'm also plotting to get Jake Richmond (designer of Panty Explosion and Classroom Deathmatch, amongst others) to come on to talk about pimping his games at anime conventions.

Of course all great bands of heroes have a name/title, even more so when they save a town from some bad-ass general and his giant undead dragon. 8)

Usually it falls to the players to come up with a name for the party... which in my experience isn't terribly productive. ^_^; If my warlord character had her way it would be called "The Wolf Pack," though that party didn't seem to really have a leader per se apart from the 4e role sense.

Anyway, you guys should totally check out the new podcast where I interview Jake Richmond (http://yarukizero.wordpress.com/2009/10/02/yaruki-zero-podcast-11-rpgs-for-anime-fans/) (one of the designers of Panty Explosion and Classroom Deathmatch) about running RPGs at anime cons and such. The more I talk with him, the more I want to go crazy running RPGs next FanimeCon. :3

Unfortunately I most likely won't be able to make it to Fanime this year. I got invited to be a guest of honor at A-Kon (http://www.a-kon.com/bm/Guests/game-designer-and-translator-ewen-cluney.shtml) (!), and I know from experience that two big cons in a row is way too much for me.

But, by then I should hopefully have one or two new translated games published, and if anyone is interested in running them at Fanime I will most likely be able to arrange a free copy.
