Title: To GLOMP someone...
Post by: PassingTheBuck on January 22, 2009, 09:02:46 AM
I was under the impression that it was a new word, being GLOMPED, created by Anime Fans to express or to do something.  Hence the phrase 'To Glomp' someone, but it turns out that a little research it's actually a very old word.

The original word was GLOM.

To glom on to someone - In Jack London's novels, the word "glom" means  "to steal" in the sense of grabbing something and running away with it.  The Scottish original, pronounced the same but spelled GLAM, means "to bolt down a bit of food."  Both uses are a touch different from the 1960's slang phrase "glom on to someone (or something)," which means to attach oneself to that poor person or thing in an obsessive, pesky way.

I guess all old words come back around to be used by a new generation for their own slang.  But you got to love the idea that glomping is an obsessive and pesky way of touching someone else.

I always thought "glomp" was just moonspeak for violently molesting others with a big smile with a big smile on your face.

Hmm.. ironic how www.urbandictionary.com had this entry:

1.  Glomp
verb, to glomp
NOT sexual, it is the action of one person lovingly (and dramatically) attacking another with a hug.
A glomp is often preadatory and lies somewhere in the grey area between a caring embrace, and a flying leap to tackle someone.
The term is used extesively in anime culture, as well as online in text form (anime because many anime characters do this often, and online because it is short and descriptive).

real life:
A runs at B as if to bowl her over, but instead picks up B and spins her around while squeezing her tightly.

Yes in my opinion a glomp isn't a glomp unless you get some air time in the process.

But the definition

"glom" means  "to steal" in the sense of grabbing something and running away with it.
makes sense since most glomps are stolen hugs.

Well I feel a glomp isn't a glomp without airtime.

I also believe that it's SUPER important to ASK first...or AT LEAST give warning to try to dodge or catch the person.

Also jumping up to grab someone's neck is a good way to cause injury to that person and possibly you as well.

Personally I LOVE glomps from women. If they want to glomp me then the answer is almost always "yes". I miss that one Mithra that was there during my first Fanime. She gave GREAT glomps <3

When it comes to glomping, I generally don't mind if I see it coming, or if they ask first. If I get glomped from behind I tend to get upset because then I can't brace myself or take measures to avoid costume/prop damage. I actually have a great video of me being glomped on youtube. I ended up dating the girl after that too...

Heres my thing on glomping:

I love to glomp people. :D But I do follow a simple rule:

Ask before doing so. (Same with hugging, kissing, etc.) And don't forget no means no. And be careful too.

Hopefully with this simple rule, no one shall get hurt. ^^

I don't mind being glomped. It's coo with me. I like the unexpectedness that comes with. Now that's just me. I respect everyone else if they don't want to it done to them or if they want the glomper to ask before them glomping is done.

i agree with you. at least partially. i personally don't like getting glomped and i will say no if you ask. but hey, as long as you're not glomping me, everything is a-ok.

i hope there isn't anyone that gives out "surprise glomps" (although there's always that "one" someone). not only is it rude but if someone glomps me without asking or without me knowing they should expect a "reflexive" punch in the stomach o.o

Glomps are an act of violence :<

I wasn't glomped at Fanime last year, but usually in times of glomp-ness I react by trying to catch them when they're flying at me but at the same time trying to block my face so what usually ends up happening is me squeezing their front from fear as they are trying to hug me. Which, if male, this usually isn't a problem but for girls it's a different story.

But generally, I don't mind gettting glomped, I can usually take the damage.

Last year at Fanime, this little, AMAZINGLY CUTE Naruto cosplayer, a girl of maybe 6 or 7, walked up to my friend and asked, "May I glomp you?"
We (meaning me, and my two friends, all female) were speechless from the pure cuteness.
Then Breanna (the one who had been asked to be glomped) squeeled "YES" and got the best glomp EVER.
Then of course me and Erica asked to be glomped by her, and she did.
I felt like such a pedophile.
But anyways.
It is common courtesy to ask to glomp someone, although sometimes it is fun to be glomped randomly, but if so, it's better to be at least a little gentle and preferably small.

Ah I remember her she was adorable!!

She was in the end-of-con conga line right behind me.
I felt really bad, because she could hardly keep up.

I've notice that the glomp issue is a topic that will never ever ever ever ever disappear from the forums. It took me a while but I have accepted it. T_T

Yeah, it does.
But for the most part, the cosplayers are teenagers, from 13-19
like me. :3
The only reason I can get away with glomping someone is because I'm really small for my age.

Uh... random statistic, that actually isn't true. Most cosplayers are 20+

Point being, there is a large spectrum of different age groups cosplaying and we need to figure out what is appropriate. Is it ok if your 21 and someone 15 years old wants to glomp you or a little 7 year old. What do you do? We both obviously know that it is complete wrong but other may not and need to know where you should draw the line.

LOLOLOL

So it's not okay if there's an age difference, and perfectly fine if there isn't? There's nothing wrong with a 21 yr. old consensually hugging a 15 yr. old, or a 12 yr. old, or a 5 yr. old. That isn't even an issue. It's wrong if it's NOT consensual.
