Title: I officially don't respect my education
Post by: satanic_mechanic on May 19, 2009, 10:49:09 AM
im a senior at UCLA.  i just got an A on a paper I honestly didnt deserve.  not an A-. not a B+. an A.

in this paper, i basically call out thomas hobbes' sovereignty theory and pinch out a great big Cleveland Steamer on its chest.  here is my concluding statement:

"Like a school of cannibalistic piranha, Hobbes' theories mercilessly decimate each other[in their logical inconsistency], turning the waters red with its own gore.  But these rotting husks of piranha wash up on the banks of the Stygian river of political thought and allow the next generation to grow from the nutrients it leaves behind, allowing the next generation to mutate an extra enlightened fin or logical tooth so that it does not suffer the same fate of previous theories."

Piranha.  Cannibalistic Piranha.  That is what my sleep deprived mind came up with as an acceptable analogy for my conclusion. Thats what got me an A. Cannibalistic Piranha.  that sounds like a thrash-metal band.

top 20 overall and top 5 public MY ARSE.  im so sick of this place, with the vacuous sorority girls, retarded frat boys, ambivalent professors and arrogant grad students.  im sick of it all.

I came here for an education and am leaving with a meaningless slip of paper.  I came here thinking i was at an institution that valued knowledge and its pursuit, not a mockery of it.  and now im going to grad school soon. what a joke.

Maybe you picked an "easy" major that's on the level of art, drama, or business majors.

Then again, I can't relate since I'm in the medical field =P

Unless all of your teachers are like that one teacher, you can't speak of whole system having the attribute that exists in part of the whole system.

In other words, I value mine ^_^  ;D

Much as I don't want to encourage drama on these forums, but UCLA was my alma mater and I don't appreciate someone trashing an institution based on .... stereotypes? personal opinion? bad class choices? a paper that was graded by a rushed T.A.?

Granted, it's been a long time since I've been in undergrad, but every large university will have groups you might not like. That was one of the main things I enjoyed about UCLA actually. It was so big that there were groups for almost anyone. And while I had my share of classes that were "easy", I also had others(especially seminars) that were challenging and where I learned a lot.

Like any major university, UCLA has its faults, but I don't think it's fair to condemn it as a "joke."

The OP really didn't seem to invite a discussion. So, I'll leave it at that.

That's something silly to complain about, in my opinion. You should be greatful that you are going to college, and a university. Not everyone gets the privilage to complain about their education, or getting an A they feel they didn't deserve. I'd give anything to be in your joke of an institution. Even if it meant receiving a meaningless slip of paper.

Personally, I think all colleges and Universities are the same. Some just look nicer in a portfolio then others, but still don't prepare you well enough to enter the real world.

i'd value mine more if i actually learned everything and didnt just memorize for tests.  after my dad taught me some of the content for my international business class, i wish i remembered more about what i was taught.  :(
