Cosplay something you want to cosplay as... that you feel fits you, that you feel you would like to do.
Don't cosplay just because it sorta looks like you especially if you have no damned clue where it's from or anything really about the character.
In essence, that's cosplaying because you want to be an attention whore. You want to dress up so people notice you.
Attention whoring is bad.

Are you able to construct the cosplay yourself or are you going to buy it? This is the first thing to think about before cosplaying. Answer the question first and then I'll get back to you. =]
I second what Pyron is saying. You shouldn't limited your cosplay to what you look like. If I were to do that I would only be able to cosplay as the Afro Samurai...and thats not happening. Just cosplay whatever character you think is super cool.

I didn't say this at all. Why do people like to reply to me and say "I agree with Pyron" or the such, and then say something COMPLETELY different than what I posted. My point was more about... cosplay something because you WANT TO, and because it's a character YOU WANT TO DO... not just "a costume" because you want to be like every other attention whoring cosplayer that cares more about getting their photo taken and thinking they're something special because losers want to take their picture. Cosplay because you want to, and because you want to cosplay a character you like. Anything else is just being a blantant attention whore, .
Though in general it IS better to cosplay as something you can atleast pull off. If you're 500 lbs cosplaying a character like Lum isn't the best nor smartest thing to do, mainly because all the attention you would be getting is negative attention. Yeah, you'll get attention, but it'll be people laughing at you and being amused at your expense.
I think narutofan17 was agreeing with you and adding more.
He agrees that you should cosplay something because you want to, and adding that it should not matter what you look like when you do so.
Or thats how I see his post. Words can be taken in so many different ways =P
I agree with Both of you regardless.
Do what makes you happy.. I usually don't know what I want to cosplay as for sure until a few months before Fanime. Some people say it's procrastination, but I say that it's intense thought! If I were you, I'd make a list of anime characters that I like, and maybe have some of their personality traits.. and then voila! Process of elimination! There are also some more anime coming out in the next few months. Take the time to watch whatever you can before deciding on something, then seeing something else and going "Aww, why didn't I think of that? :("
