Title: Info on the hotels: Hilton, Mariott, Crowne, Fairmont, St. Claire
Post by: TC X0 Lt 0X on October 27, 2009, 12:32:42 PM
I have been contemplating which Hotel I want to be at Fanime'10.

First we got the Hilton.
Pros:
-Cheap
-Close to the Dealers Hall
-Close to the Dance
-Close to Maid Cafe

Cons:
-Distant from the Main Sections (Video Room and E-Gaming) of the Con

Then the Mariott:
Pros:
-Close to a large section of the Con
-Particularly the Video Rooms for those late night viewings.
-Close to most cosplay gatherings.

Cons:
-Expensive
-No Locks on restrooms

Are there any other Pros/Cons I am missing?

One con you might have missed is the elevators.

Which hotel?

Also it depends on what floor you're on for elevators and if you're ok with stairs.  I didn't think con pricing was that much of a difference for the Hilton and Marriot either especially if you have a bunch of people in your room too.

Idk, I personally am partial to the Mariott, stayed at it for the last 2 cons

Marriott con:
No lock on the bathroom door.

What? I like to have some privacy, please.

Oh yeah I always forget that every year.
But then again it's a non-issue for me since I usually have mature enough roommates lol

Hilton pro:
Close to maid cafe I believe.

Marriott pro:
Close to pratically all cosplay gatherings.

Hilton
Bathroom door: Huge and wide.
Floor: No mirrors while waiting for elevator.

That's all I can remember when I stayed at the Hilton.

In Theory I should try staying at the Hilton for 2010, though I found the Marriot to be very nice, simply for being so close to the main con.

However final choices will depend entirely upon the almighty dollar.

By Walking distances:

Marriot:
Pro: Close to Stage Zero, Artist Alley, Game Room and Theaters
Pro: Close to registration

Con: Far from the maid cafe
Con: Far from the entrance to the Dealers room.

Hilton:
Pro: Close to Maid Cafe
Pro: Close to Dealers Room entrance
Pro: Something about the third floor being reserved for pool space if I heard right.

Cons: Far from everywhere else

That's where the pool area is at. Only con about that is you get rowdy and noisy people around the pool area if trying to take a nap in the afternoon.

Also Hibari's awesome, same with Hibird. Thank for some clarification on the pool area.

What about the Fairmont? ;D
... maybe I shouldn't even post that suggestion. ;D *Cue Julia to talk about the extensive drink list at the lounge*

There's also the Crowne Plaza... and I think the Sainte Claire and Montgomery will be available this year (haven't checked up on that, though). I haven't stayed at any of those three - only been to the Hilton and Fairmont - but I'm curious what the pro/con list for those four would look like.

For me its all about the buck, so I would go for Hilton here. I don't really mind the extra walk to the main events. Think of it as exercise. :)

I personally think that little bit of extra space on the Hilton side is a pro.  It's really not much farther (we're talking yards, not blocks) and I feel like it's just a touch quieter on the Hilton side.  The lobby at the Hilton is also more subdued.  Starbucks is also on the Hilton side.  However, I do have the say the food at the Marriot is much better than at the Hilton.

I stay at the Hilton because I like the Hilton.  I haven't stayed at the Marriot, I might some day.  For now I'll stay with the Hilton because they've never let me down.

hmm, I think we are missing some things other than walking distances. [ I mean, they're both connected to the convention center... xD ] Some questions are: does either one have a refrigerator in the room? Is there a coffee maker so that us poor con-goers can get hot water for our meals of ramen? Do either hotel charge for internet use? Comfortable beds? Maybe a general crowd at either hotel is particularly rowdy and/or noisy?

Also, the sainte claire is awesome. I was just looking at the marriott since they have a valet package...  ;D

When going for the cheapest room at the Mariott I didn't have a refrigerator... or maybe I did but I couldn't find it, as I had to pack my ice chest full of ice each morning to keep stuff cold/cool.

Hmm, yeah the first time I went to fanime and stayed in the sainte claire I didn't realize there was a fridge cuz it was in a compartment inside the desk >_<

Mariott and Hilton in my opinion are the best two hotels to get for the con, for the mere fact you dont have to cross any streets to get to the main con, just down through halls.
I stayed at St Claire last time and it wasn't too bad.

Pro's for St. Claire:
Mini-fridge
Halls aren't crowded with rowdy con goers
Elevators are always free
Cheaper then Marriott and Hilton
locks on bathroom doors

Cons:
Rooms are sort of small
You have to make a walk to the con grounds, and a walk back to the hotel. ( though it's not too bad, and it's always fun to see cosplayers walk the crosswalk, you always get soem funny looks at the cars you pass, lol)
You have to watch the person at the front desk when they check you in, some of them don't know about the discounts congoers get. ( had a huge problem with this).

I prefer the Marriott because I enjoy it. I do know the issue with the bathrooms having no lock, but I've had roommates who respect the privacy of the person going in. I did stay at the Hilton one year, but I think I prefer the Marriott still. Parking is cheaper too.

I have stayed at the Marriott for every year it has been in this location save one, when I stayed at the Hilton. The Marriott is nice, but this year, I'm going to try for the Hilton simply because of the elevator situation (though, the Hilton had another elevator problem that I remember -- they were too fast and made me dizzy. At least there weren't as many stops, so it's a dizziness trade off for me) and because I'd like to try something new. I think I'd enjoy being on the "quieter" side of the con for once, since it isn't really -that- much further from most of the con events.

I do put high priority on staying at one of the two connected hotels, though, since I enjoy my downtime in the room and wouldn't want to have to walk back and forth (especially late and night and more than likely alone and in skimpy cosplay, non-skimpy cosplay, or loli). Though, from what I saw of it from the B&W Ball last year, the Fairmont looks pretty swanky~ I've heard good things about the non-connected hotels, but I still would greatly prefer one of the two connected ones.

I've been going to the Marriott because of the free high-speed internet, half-off valet parking, and a overall great experience two years in a row. Plus last year they had me checked in before 10am.
Does the Hilton have a similar deal on free high-speed internet, because I would love to try out the Hilton one year.

I've only stayed at the St. Claire once, the room was pretty large, and it was nice. Elevators there were not as hectic as the Marriott. Despite the elevators, I always enjoy my stay at the Marriott. Next year, I am hoping to put a request for a room closest to the bottom floor at the Marriott. I hope this is possible.

The Hilton hotel website had minifridges listed as an ammenity of their rooms. It's was the big decisionmaker on my part to go with Hilton over Marriott this year (and that's with having a Hilton Honors account)...that way I can keep my food and bevvies and cractackular Asian jello shot snacks nice and cold. Might have a cooler too, if I think about it (had a cheep styrofoam one for SDCC this year and I forgot to pack it in the car :P).

From experience and what I expected, the Hilton is the better choice. The CONS that say that it is far away from the convention activities is a PRO for me, because it's not as crowded and have a little bit more room than Marriott's. Just walk a bit more from the Hilton, it saves you from a long time of waiting for Marriott elevators.

After about 7 years being at SJCC, the Hilton, Marriott, St. Claire, Fairmont, De Anza, and Montgomery Hotels should know what to expect from FanimeCon and its people.

I prefer the Hilton.  Generally speaking there is an "older" crowd of fanime goers that stay in the hilton so it is less likely for you to get stuck in the elevator with all the buttons being pressed.  Also less wait time for the elevator!  The Fairmont is a nice hotel, but it is about 2 blocks away if you don't mind a little exercise.  :o  The Marriott elevator will give you vertigo...it feels like you are on the superman ride!

I'm glad to hear that I was not the only one who felt this way about the Marriott's elevators. The first (and only) time I've stayed there, I ended up taking the stairs the whole weekend... right up to the 24th floor.

The Marriot has mini fridges. You just have to ask for one either in advance or at the counter. When you book the room you have an option to tell you things would like. For example, two twin beds. There you ask for a mini fridge.
When my friends and I got there, we didnt know about it. So when they told us it is best to ask in advanced because their fridges run out, but luckily we got the last one.
And the next day they somehow messed up and gave us another mini fridge so we ended up having two. XD

Ok, so I have two questions for the people who have stayed at the hotels connected to the convention center.

1) What is the situation on parking? Do they put you in the convention parking deck? And how much is it? Someone mentioned Mariott half price valet?

2) Do either the Hilton or Mariott have connected rooms with a inner door connecting them?

Title: Re: The REAL Question: Hilton or Mariott?

Avairrianna - the Hilton did have some interconnected rooms before the reno. I'm not sure if they still do, but it's likely. I'm not sure about the parking, but I believe they have their own lots?

I have a few questions for people who have stayed at the Hilton since the reno. They keep talking about the tv hookups - do these include HDMI? Or is it just RCA/Coax/whatever? My laptop only has an HDMI out and being able to watch movies on the tv would be amazing.

Also, how big are the bathtubs? The hotel I was originally looking at had these amazing two-person jacuzzi tubs in each room, but it's a mile away. I'm not expecting anything that nice, obviously, but I am about six feet tall and the reason I chose the Hilton rather than the other place is that my health problems are getting worse, and I'd love to be able to soak at the end of the day without having my knees around my ears.

They have a side panel that's implemented on the dresser where the TV is placed on. There are two additional power outlets and a set of hook ups. One for composite(the red/yellow/white cables) and one for HDMI.

We'll soak in the hot tub I guess.

Thought I'd add my exp from last year at the Fairmont.

The room was nice and spacious, room service is respectful of belonging placement, so you won't come back to a completely reorganized room.  The bathrooms are large, though they had a problem that the floor ends up a huge puddle when you take a shower.  The walk to the Fairmont was the dealbreaker for me, I'd go back if it weren't for it.  It may only be 2 blocks, but when you add in all the time and walking you do at the con, it really is a bit much.  Though admittedly being staff I'm on my feet for the majority of Thursday-Monday, so that may add to it.  Aside from the walk, though it's nice having the hotel locked to people w/o keycards, there's no problems with the elevators and the overall hotel is very quiet.

Well since i been to the convention center 3 times in the last 2 weeks i finally got all ym questions answered and seens the marriot rooms as well...took me 3 times to get into one X_X

HILTON
*Parking is $19 A NIGHT
*Rooms that connect are a Double Bed room and a King bed room ONLY. meaning there are no double bed rooms that connect(Same in Marriot)
*All rooms come with refrigerators
*Slightly bigger room, slightly smaller bathroom

MARRIOT
*Parking is $15 for however long you stay. so if your at marriot all weekend, means you only pay $15!!! (employee told me that today)

*You must request a refridgerator and it will cost about $10-$15 a night for one.....
*Bathroom doors have no locks and are SLIDING DOORS. they arent cheap looking doors tho, they are big and made of wood.
*Slightly smaller bedroom but Bigger bathroom.

Extra
*i think marriot serves breakfast snacks. i think i saw that on their page
*im not certain if Marriot has A/C, i didnt notice one when i went in the room.

Ok so I've heard a ton of information both good and bad about the Hilton and Marriott, but can someone tell me some more info whether it is good or bad about the St. Claire??? This is my first fanime con and I booked a room at the St. Claire based on price since well the economy pretty much sucks! So if anyone could give me some more info on the St. Claire I would be very grateful and possibly what my hotel experience is going to be like considering the St. Claire is almost sold out! Yee, I'm so excited and nervous at the same time!! :D

I actually like the Sainte Claire over all the hotels (though I've never done Fairmont as it's too far away). It's quieter, the elevators don't break down halfway through Con, and the rooms are nice. Last year I had a room overlooking the front of the building which is fun to watch people wander back and forth from the Con Center. The staff is always friendly too. I would have gone there this year, but couldn't get a room with the dates I wanted.

The only problem with it is that there's no self-parking, and god knows where the valet goes to. Valet's more expensive as well so I always just parked in the Con Center and walked over. Not that far.

I'm happy that it will be a little bit quieter in the St, Claire because this is my first con so maybe starting off slow is good, lol.
The elevator situations at the St. Claire sounds like it will be better too, I really don't want to ride the elevator to every floor because someone pressed all the buttons.
;D I'm so excited for fanime, I can't wait...even though it is a ways away.

stayed in the sainte claire, thought it was pretty, the bed was pretty spacious (fit 3 people sleeping comfortably) (got a king btw)
they do rollaway bed, and they have a fridge
the bath tub was lovely..

hilton's swimming pool is on the 3rd floor, but it's on a balcony (someone took a pic of us from above .. kinda akward. although i'd like to see that pic)
honestly i wasn't impressed with what i saw of the hilton

I didn't know that the St. Claire had a fridge, definitely a plus! Oh and I'm glad to hear 3 ppl can fit into the king comfortably since I wasn't able to get a 2 bedded room. Thanks for the info!

I can vouch for the St. Claire. I've stayed here once before, and I loved it. Going to stay here again. Other than the pluses already mentioned previously, I also wanted to note that wireless internet is complementary (free ^_^vvv). But I do enjoy the empty elevators as well. I second the Marriott elevators... I think the take off and stopping motions feel like a rocket flight @[email protected]_x...

Maybe I'm glad I didn't book a room at the Marriott espcially if the elevator ride is like a ride in itself, lol.

I stayed at the Hilton last year. Since the hotel connects to the con, I can easily go to my room and switch costumes. The beds are really big and they have a lot of extra pillows. Though they do charge you for wireless internet and a roll out bed.

i have a room booked in 2 hotels and i need to make up my mind so i can let one of them go and give some one else a chance to have it. i booked the mariot first because 80% why i am going is to cosplay and i was told it was best for cosplayers BUT then i learned it was not pet friendly so i nabbed one at the Hilton. the fridge at the hilton alone is enough to tempt me to stay and part of the other 20% of going to fanime is to shop and it is close to the dealers. (as for the dog she is technically a service dog so we can stay at the mariot, i just preferr pet friendly hotels since we will be leaving her in the room for a while)

but i wonder, just how much more inconvient is it to be in the hilton when it comes to showing off ones cosplay? some one told me everyone seems to gather between the 2 hotels anyway so there is not much difference between then 2 hotels. our costumes are very big and very hot so the less walking there is to do the better...

I stay at the Hilton, and I cosplay.  I've never had any problems.  Infact most years the staff will ask me about my cosplays when I check in (I usually have my luggage with me...it's hard to ignore a woman carrying a styrofoam head under her arm).  :)  The distance really isn't much further from the center of the convention (a few yards really) and there is a lot going on on both sides.  Most of the Gatherings for cosplay happen at the fountains out front, it is right out side of the Marriot.  In that case the Marriot is closer.  However, it's really not a long way from the Hilton either.

Does anyone know if the Marriott has microwaves/coffee makers in the rooms? My roommates and I are planning on bringing some food to save on money.

Unless they changed something, the Marriott has a coffee maker but no microwave.

there is a coffee pot in each room at the marriott.  they give you two coffees and two tea bags every day, which is nice.  i'm saving a tea bag from last year, for a fanime-pick-me-up next time i get sad or lonely :3      <--- such a fanime lover!!

anyways, there are no microwaves in the marriott.  i heard that some people just bring their own microwaves, which i find to be an excellent idea.  you can get it to your room easily using a bellhop and a cart, and it increases your food options dramatically, plus it only requires an electric plug in the wall, which there are many of in the rooms.  best of luck!

aaah yes the elevators... tricky for tall heels too, you lose your balance a little.  i thought i would get used to it after the first day, but i didn't >_<  but on sunday i was wearing a corset and i rode the elevator and my organs didn't flop around unpleasantly!  felt much better.

The Fairmont has mini fridges. It's got key locks as well so it's pretty nice. You have a nice walk around the park before the convention.

The con to this is it gets cold so at night in an elaborate outfit its really cold.

Cold is relative. XD Where I'm from it gets to -40 in the winter, so San Jose at night in May is positively toasty most of the time.

awesome, thanks. Coffee is essential to my survival. ^^

And a friend I'm rooming with is planning on bringing her tiny rice cooker, so that should work out nicely.

I'd love to be able to bring a rice cooker or crock pot or the like, that is a really good idea. Unfortunately since I'm flying in, I can't afford to put something in my suitcase that uses up that much space and weight :(

HINT: If you can ship some things? Do so!

Don't ship anything you'd worry about, but one of those small Wallgreens-size numbers would be a perfect item to stick in a box, get to and from shipping labels, and send it via ground about a week before the convention.

I know folks who do this with costumes and party gear...you probably don't need to use shipping trunks like they do, but a box that is sturdy enough to last both ways and a call to the hotel to see if they will accept the package when it arrives will help a lot in loosening up your luggage stash.

I'm bringing a griddle. ^^ and i'm staying at the sainte claire. Beautiful hotel too. I stayed there my 1st fanime. Fit 4 people comfortably in a king bed. There is a fridge. And it's very quiet and beautiful. The marriot... Not so much. It was convienient to be close to the con but the 2 bed room was compacted, the bathroom privacy was none (got walked in on./noticed that you can see through the door crack) and it was loud (all night) and a major p.i.t.a getting down most of the time. It was nice that we got to overlook the con center, but the stay sucked. Overall saint claire for the win!         posted from my metro pcs phone

Personally, my favorite hotel is the Fairmont. Stayed there last year, staying there again this year.
My HUGE pro for the Fairmont: The elevators.
They're huge, they're numerous, they're fast, and they don't give you that nasty weird feeling you get on the (I think?) Marriot elevators.

The person who's name is on the reservation has to be the one to check in. Some places need the card that the room was reserved with, but not always.
