Title: Retro Games LOVE AND HATE
Post by: SukebeStudios on November 25, 2009, 04:52:41 AM
This is similar to my Nintendo Entertainment System Thread. Except this one will be of a broader nature. Instead of just asking about NES, this time, I'm asking which games did you like from ALL retro gaming systems. Now begs the question, what does this include? To ME, "retro systems" are any systems that were before the "3D Age." Meaning once the systems started utilizing 3D graphics, no longer Retro. (Example. N64, PS1, Dreamcast). And this also includes add ons that the systems might have had, mainly Sega and the 32X and the Sega CD. Those count. SO! Which retro games did you LIKE, and which did you HATE! If you can, tell us why! And also tell us what system it's for.

LIKE: Snatcher(Sega CD)

The gameplay takes some getting used to, and sometimes you're left wondering "what else is there to do?" but the storyline and dialogue is well done, as well as the humor, and the anime artwork style. You could easily see this game being turned into a live-action movie. AS LONG AS THAT ASSHAT UWE BOWL DOESN"T LAY HIS GRIMY HANDS ON IT!!

HATE: Who Framed Roger Rabbit (NES)
Now...in the NES thread, Pyron mentioned that a game I LIKED, Friday the 13th didn't explain anything to you. This game is even WORSE THAN THAT! It EXPECTS you to know everything about the movie, so it doesn't have to explain anything to you. You have no idea where you're supposed to go, what you're supposed to do, or why! Even if you cheat and read a Walkthrough on the net, you STILL have problems navigating yourself around the city, as it looks like an UP CLOSE version of the Ghostbusters(NES) Mapscreen. None of the buildings are labeled, and you have to walk into the door...to walk up to the door. (Try to make sense of that) I could do a whole review on this game, and I know the Angry Video Game Nerd did one, but there was a lot of stuff he left out of complaining, most likely due to time constraints. But oh well.

In who framed roger rabbit, there is no "set places" you are supposed to go. The game is randomized, and you're searching the entire city for the will pieces. They do explain this in the instruction booklet actually. I've beaten the game multiple times. But yeah, there are no labels and things, because... they don't need them. The ONLY set things are where item blocks are, the wall to toon town for example, where you need the dynamite to destroy. The dynamite however, is randomized, and you can find it in any number of places. I played the hell outta roger rabbit.

With Friday the 13th though, lighting fireplaces doesn't give you the torch, it gives you the flashlight to navigate caves. The torch is a two part thing, (it took me literally over a year to figure this out) in which you need to activate certain check points in different houses by going there, then going to a certain cabin in the northern forest(I think it was the northern, it's been years since I played).

Castlevania wasn't that hard though btw, Frankenstein level is easy. The only truly hardpart of the game is DEATH. Death is just retardedly hard without the III stone and holy water trap.

I've beaten far too many NES/SNES games growing up, so I never consider "difficulty" in my judgment of games unless the game is just far too easy.

A game to hate... Kid Chameleon. It took me 13+ hours to beat, no saves/passwords in the game at all. They give you know way to know where you're going, and you have to navigate through hundred of warp points that can take you to anywhere in the game. You basically try all of them until you find the right combination to get to the last stage, and even worse they set it up to where if you don't have certain helmets, you have to back track to get the right helmet to proceed. If you're wrong, warp back 20 levels and through a path of 10 warps to get the helmet you need, go through another 10 to get back to that stage, to continue.

Dude...that's torture.  Not cool.

One game that I loved was Fire Emblem 4.  The entire FE series is really good but this one is definitely one of my favorites.  I spent many hours going through that game.  Good times.

I wasn't a huge Tetris fan.  It was just so boring and monotonous to me.  No excitement whatsoever.

Ugh, childhood trauma resurrected. I tested the game when I was a kid (focus group, not QA) and the guys from SEGA were confused when no one had anything to say about it. (Hint: no one talked because it was a terribly frustrating game.)

Loved: Final Fantasy III (VI Japan). Still my favorite RPG.
Hated: Can I say Kid Chameleon again? Jesus. The memories weren't buried enough.

Uh... I didn't notice this before. You know Snatcher is already a live action movie right? Rather, Snatcher is BASED on a live action movie. One of the great classics as well.

Inform yourself, go watch BladeRunner.
