Title: Fine Dining (2010 edition)
Post by: Glitch on February 27, 2010, 10:35:21 PM
This fanime will be my tenth fanime (pauses for audience applause) thank you, anyway I want to celebrate by going to a nearbye restraunt with my friends.(not sure where, but I wanna try some of the thai places) Thus I thought of bringing this topic from past fanime years back so we could all share our plans, share past experiences,or give advice about eating out.(obviously not fast food places)

First off I declare that Mc Donalds should be closed throughout Fanime weekend and like I said before *Have Your Happy Meal Elswhere* Next I don't know of any Thai restaurants around the area but if you want an amazing brick oven pizza I reccomend Amici's Pizzeria on 225 West Santa Clara st. A bit of a ways to walk but just to loosen yourself up from the crowds of the con.

Original Joes is definitely the spot to hit during Fanime.
I remember the first time I was there - it was right after the 2007 Masquerade, and mostly everything in that area was closed except for Original Joes. I went back there in 2009 with a friend of mine who was rooming with me and for the price that I paid for the pasta (and their portions are XBOX HUGE, enough to feed two) it was a good dinner on a Saturday night instead of the Masquerade; also caught some of the Lakers/Nuggets playoff game that night there too.

Peggy Sue's is another nice place.

Not really considered 'fine dining', but Kukar's House of Pizza on Almaden Blvd. was delicious. It's in the complete opposite direction from most other restaurants in the area, so I'm not sure how many con goers check it out.

As a student of SJSU, I am familiar with a number of the establishment's available. Personally, one of my favorites is Iguana's for mexican food., especially if you are a fan of burrito's. I have yet to tackle it's famed "Burritozilla (5 pounds, 17.5" long), but I have had a number of their menu items. Personal favorite is the fish burrito.

You guys sure seem to love the pizza places. XD But that's cool to know there are other places besides pizza my heart.(with pretty bad, almost uncooked dough)

Some friends of mine plan to tackle that burrito for fanime. That's the one they reffer to "as big as your head" right?

Already done Burritozilla. Did it like 5 years ago.

Anyways, Original Joe's has terrible pasta. Their non pasta items are fine, but overcooked pasta, and overly priced for what it was. It's not super expensive, but definitely not worth the price. I've eaten here a number of times, and it's nice that it's opened kinda late, but that's about it.

Really, nothing around the convention is that good unless you're willing to drive, or willing to pay like 30$ a meal. Pizza my Heart, the Pita Pit, Iguana's, etc. are your best bet though. Cheap good food. All the restaurants around the area are mediocre at best... unless you're going to Morton's or a different really nice establishment. So stick with the cheap good food then try to pretend that one of the restaurants are good.

Sometimes they give you a con goers discount as well.

It's a bit farther than I usually like to walk in a city I don't know.  However, I really do like Sonoma Chicken Coop.

If you're in the mood to spend a bit more for higher quality and slightly smaller portions I suggest you try Arcadia at the Marriott. I love the food there and it's relaxing. (Lobster corn dogs!)

But if you want cheap and tons of quantity go somewhere else.

If your looking for Thai food, try House of Siam. I love their Seafood Pad Thai. The only problem I got from here are their business hours. -_-

I can't exactly remember the name, but it was a little Asian food place that sold bento sets, such as chicken and pork cutlet, with rice, and some kind of tofu. Because of Fanime, they were able to stay open till midnight. I believe it was close to Jack n the Box. Pretty good and not ridiculously expensive.

Arcadia is very very nice, and a nice atmosphere to celebrate in.  very classy.  last year i got fish and chips (the chips/fries were fried in goose fat and they were soooo flavorful and even somewhat healthier than normal fries!) and it was a medium sized meal for under nine dollars.  I enjoyed it immensely, not too much food but not too little.  plus you get delicious bread and some sort of seasoned/flavored butter spread as a complimentary appetizer.  waiters are suuuper nice and helpful.  there is a neato-looking bar as well!

There's a House of Siam on Second St. (151 S 2nd St, San Jose, CA 95113).  It's between the San Jose Art Museum and San Jose State's campus.  I went there a few years ago and I remember it being pretty good.  As far as I know, that's the only Thai in the area and it is within walking distance of the convention center (probably 15 minutes).

Anybody eaten at E&O trading Company?

I haven't personally eaten there but I know people who have eaten at the San Francisco one. I haven't heard anything good about it.

Il Fornaio is good too!

The only places I could recommend for eating are fifteen minutes away by car.  If you enjoy a good cheese steak then you must go to Amato's.  Better than the stuff you get from the source, though any Philly-natives would probably disagree.

There is actually a cheesesteak shop nearby in Downtown San Jose(76 East Santa Clara St.) I love their steak fries

The Old Spaghetti Factory is decent. I've only been there once and it was a long time ago. I enjoyed the food there. Just be sure to make reservations since it could be crowded.

Last time I ate there my daiquiri had a large chunk of glass in it.  @_@  Obviously a huge mistake on their part, but something to consider if you're thinking of getting a blended drink there.  How such a large piece of glass got into their ice machine is beyond me.

I'm not talking about you specifically, but I always wondered why people report this like it's supposed to mean something. Weird stuff happens like this in all restaurants all the time. It's like going "Don't eat at this place, I got food poisoning here before". You can get food poisoning at any restaurant and 95% of the time it's not the restaurants fault at all.

Spaghetti factory is a chain of restaurants. It's pretty good and inexpensive for the amount you get. Price range is roughly 10-15$ per entree. Entrees are rather big, as one entree is enough to fill me up(compared to say BJ's where an entree will not fill me up without an appetizer + side).

Post by: Menchi on March 09, 2010, 08:32:51 PM
My intent wasn't to dissuade people from the place, really I was just looking for something to say.  I also don't really understand the notion, myself.  Not eating at a place because of one bad incident.  I've since eaten at the Old Spaghetti Factory multiple times without incident.  If anything the glass was a boon, as it got me a free drink.

To avoid too much derailing, my coworkers are always talking about Alexander's Steakhouse.  Again, though, like my recommendation of Amato's it is a good distance away.  The food there is supposed to be amazing though, and from what I've heard of their conversations you pay for it.  Looking at at least fifty bucks for your steak.

Very crowed. At other locations some of the staff will dance on the counters to nifty '50s tunes, but during Fanime it is way too crowded for that.

Awesome chili cheese fries and milkshakes.

HMMM Johnny Rockets that will probably be on my list of restaurants to dine @ Fanime 2010 and by the way I will be sitting at the counter were I will see the staff cook not dance and listen to timeless 50's 60's 70's and 80's tunes if available. Be warned that the mini jukeboxes on the tables are just for show and don't actually work. I was pretty disappointed about that.

yeah that would disappoint me too...  :-\

but i guess i could add that the milkshakes are like four bucks and they give you the glass with the milkshake in it, as well as the metal thing it was mixed in, also full, so really you could totally split a milkshake, each have one of said containers, and it's a nice cheap date!  totally did that last year ^___^

There's a Safeway Market on 2nd and E San Fernando. Not as well stocked as a full grocery store, but it should supply you with everything you're looking for. Also in easy walking distance from the con.

There are also two Food Maxx stores in the San Jose area within driving distance - one on Meridian and Parkmoor off the 280 & one on Tully and Quimby near the Eastridge Center. Both are open 24 hours.

Poor House Bistro is okay.  Reasonable sizes and great prices.  My favorite items on the menus are the po' boys. If you can get on their e-mail list, they tend to send out lots of coupons.

If you are going to take the time to trek somewhere definitely go to Henry's High Life.  I was always curious about the place every time I drove by it on 87.  I finally went after that mouthwatering episode on I saw on Man vs. Food where the host visited the restaurant.  Great price for the amount of meat you get.  I've tried both the ribs (I tried to attack a whole rack and couldn't succeed-only stuck to half portions) and the prime rib.  Both are outstanding!  Comes with a nice salad and awesome bread.  I can't remember if there was a potato or not...it's been a while since I've gone; I had to limit/eliminate meat from my diet after the surgery I had in late January.

Gumbo Jumbo is pretty good too, but kinda pricey ($15-$22 entree).  I favor their jambalaya over Poor House, but that's just me.  There are very few restaurants that could compare to the traditional taste of real New Orleans cooking, but I think Gumbo Jumbo does a good job.

If you are looking for another BBQ spot and have a vehicle, another great spot to hit is Blue Rock BBQ on 3001 Meridian Ave (it't about a 4-5 mile drive from the convention center).  They do and awesome dry rub BBQ and have outstanding Tennessee pulled pork options.  Everything on their menu is reasonably priced and comes with a nice selection of sides (I always stick to the baked beans...sweet and smokey).

Hope you get to try out these great eats when you come over to SJ for FanimeCon!

Yeah I wasn't saying that I necessarily believe that Subway's all that good for you, hell a foot-long Meatball sandwich is like 1250-1400 calories. Still, buy a footlong at lunch, have half at lunch and half at dinner. 5 bucks. Good times.

Especially for people who go to fanime with like 100 bucks, if that, and expect to make it through the weekend lol

Ate at Poor House Bistro yesterday at lunch break sense it was raining and I had no desire to walk all the way to Subway in the rain. I ended up paying little over 10 dollars for a Cheeseburger, Fries, and a soda. But it only took 5min for the food to be done. They give a modest amount of food. The cheeseburger was a decent size and there was plenty of fries. I ended up not finishing all my fries because there was so many. I can't say much more sense all I had was a simple cheeseburger, yet to have anything else on the menu, much less knowing what they are. Stil it was pretty good.

Then Chaos will ensue.

That and they might become a traffic hazard. Plenty of cars drive through the ring dropping off teen/tween congoers to the convention, and a Lunch truck would not do them any justice.

Shameless plug: Cafe Primavera @ the Tech Museum (cuz I work there!)

There's a new Subway opening up right across the street from the con center at the 360 building. I'm not sure if it'll open by Fanime.

I just got 3 words for ya'll:

Subway: Eat Fresh. (and cheap!)

It's true, even if it is really unhealthy.
better than other con foods like coffeepotramen and mcdonalds.
plus you can get healthy-ish chips, apple slices, orange juice, etc. there.  and it's comfort food!  is there one near the con center?  :3

Actually if I remember correctly McDonalds SnackWraps (a few of them anyway) are more healthy then your average Subway Sandwich. Crazy I know. But it is true, Subway is more healthy then most Fastfoods.

I survived on 90 dollars... but that was because I ate breakfast at home and I was used to finding reasonably priced food there as a student. XD

For grocery stores: If you don't mind walking a bit, Zanotto's Market is on 2nd Street and Market Street. If you're there on Friday, the Student Union of SJSU is open for inexpensive dining.

Ramada Limited's Continental Breakfasts in combination of Subway Lunch and JackInTheBox Dinner slimmed my food spending down to ~$50. For 2 People.
Still wish I got a Hilton room but the free Breakfasts will be as welcome as they were last year.

Ditto those bentos were pretty good. Not the best of the best but pretty good. And not overly busy, I was able to get a seat inside at lunch time with my mom and little brother :D

Any good sushi places within walking distance?
Or not even good but edible.

Ninja Star Sushi Bar
130 E Santa Clara St
San Jose, CA 95113
(408) 297-0568
www.ninjastarsushi.com/Welcome.html

pulled this one from yelp.com [always a good site]
theres LOTS of sushi around withing walking distance, but this location delivers!

or just try Yelp.com around the downtown SJ area- the site usually does me well. :)

Personally, one of my favorites is Iguana's for mexican food., especially if you are a fan of burrito's.
I know, not exactly fine dining, but I've heard Iguana's is the best for burritos and La Victoria's around the corner is the best for Tacos.

Well...it's certainly not the most inexpensive place in town, but Il Fornaio is excellent. It'd be especially good if you wanted a nice dinner before the Black & White Ball. =)
(As for dessert, I'd strongly recommend the vanilla gelato with espresso. Anything you get there should be good, though.)

Also, should you find yourself in Santa Clara (north from SJ on 101), there's a fabulous place in the Mercado shopping center called Tomatina. It has similar fare to Il Fornaio (for less) and the Best. Cappuccinos. Ever. XD

If you have transportation and basic cooking skills, you can make a decently priced meal or three with ingredients bought at Mitsuwa.

The Market Safeway is always a good bet. Sushis there are pretty decent (typical store-quality, but fresh made in house). Some deli foods and fried stuff are good too.

Recommended: The Market's deli sandwiches. They are huge and have big selection of toppings (way better than Subway and for about the same price).
Tip: use the computers there to order and in the meat menu select "combo meat" as one of the 2 meats you can select. Combo meat is roast beef, ham, and turkey slices; but counts as 1 meat.

There was a really good sports bar I came across last year. I don't remember where but it was down a flight of stairs somewhere around the Saint Claire. Best Burger ever! Although I did get weird looks for being in costume cause no other con goes were there lol

If anyone has already said it well i didn't know, but Iguanas is definitely a nice place to go with a bunch of friends and get the 5 lb. burrito to split. It's a few blocks from the con center

Gonna see if I can treat a friend to Tandoori Oven, so I can take advantage of the "buy 1 curry dinner, get 1 of equal price or less for $1 more" student discount (used to be "buy 1 get 1 free").

would a student i.d. from spring 2010 semester work, even though the semester's over?  I guess that would be a good thing to bring along.  what other places have student discounts?

It has to be an SJSU ID, I think. As far as I'm concerned those don't appear to have expiration dates.

Iguana's has a discount as well, but it's a small one (I think it's 10%).
