Post what role (cosplay piece or board player) and which games you would like to do (Game #1, #3 etc.) then list the character & title you will be cosplaying :P  If you are interested in joining into the Red vs. Blue (#2) game then click on the thread link by the team below and check it out!

If you are cosplaying from a Jump title please say so and you will be listed on the "Jump" side. :) That's all you have to do and I will add you to the list. Now let's get the checkers "Jumping" and fill up what we have!

Fanime will be taking group pictures during the Gathering/Event this year. If you do not want to be included in those pictures please step aside for those photos. By remaining with the group when the pictures are being taken you give your consent to be photographed.

HOW TO PLAY CHECKERS

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 15 - 20 minutes of game play
Set-up time: 5-10 minutes to get all pieces (cosplayer included) in place and starter is determined

Here's How:
1.   Checkers is played by two players. Each player begins the game with 12 pieces. There are 12 pieces of one color and 12 pieces of another color usually black.

2.   The board consists of 64 squares, alternating between 32 dark and 32 light squares. It is positioned so that each player has a light square on the right side corner closest to him or her.

3.   Each player places his or her pieces on the 12 dark squares closest to him or her.

4.   Black moves first. Players then alternate moves. (color is determined by coin toss)

5.   Moves are allowed only on the dark squares, so pieces always move diagonally. Single pieces are always limited to forward moves (toward the opponent).

6.   A piece making a non-capturing move (not involving a jump) may move only one square.

7.   A piece making a capturing move (a jump) leaps over one of the opponent's pieces, landing in a straight diagonal line on the other side. Only one piece may be captured in a single jump; however, multiple jumps are allowed on a single turn. (see "Jumps" below)

8.   When a piece is captured, it is removed from the board.

9.   If a player is able to make a capture, there is no option -- the jump must be made. If more than one capture is available, the player is free to choose whichever he or she prefers. (See "Jumps" below)

10.   When a piece reaches the furthest row from the player who controls that piece, it is crowned and becomes a king. One of the pieces which had been captured is placed on top of the king so that it is twice as high as a single piece. (Cosplayer piece is given a crown to show that they are the "kinged" piece)

11.   Kings are limited to moving diagonally, but may move both forward and backward. (Remember that single pieces, i.e. non-kings, are always limited to forward moves.)

12.   Kings may combine jumps in several directions -- forward and backward -- on the same turn. Single pieces may shift direction diagonally during a multiple capture turn, but must always jump forward (toward the opponent).

13.   A player wins the game when the opponent cannot make a move. In most cases, this is because all of the opponent's pieces have been captured, but it could also be because all of his pieces are blocked in.

Further Explanations:
The Board:  The checkerboard has 64 alternating light and dark squares. The game is played on the dark squares.

Pieces:  Each player starts out with 12 playing pieces. One player has light colored pieces and the other has dark pieces (called "black" ). Each player starts with their pieces laid out on the 12 dark squares nearest him or her.

First Move:  The player with the black pieces moves first. Randomly determine who gets the black pieces first. To be determined by coin toss.

Time Limits:  2 minutes max are allowed for each move. In the case where there is only one possible jump available, the player has only one minute in which to make it. The player needs to be made aware that the time limit has been reached. Then, if the player still has not moved after another minute, that player loses the game.

Touching Pieces: 
Before the first move is made, either player can adjust the position of any piece on the board. After the first move, no player can adjust any piece without "intimation." In other words, you just need to say you're going to adjust a piece before you do it. The player who adjusts a piece without intimation can be warned for the first offense, but will forfeit the game on the second offense.

If the player whose move it is touches a piece that can be played, the player must move that piece or forfeit the game.

If any part of a playable piece is moved over the angle of its square, the piece must be played in that direction.

When the player's hand is withdrawn from the board, the move is ended.

Jumps: 

A piece cannot jump over empty squares.
Every opportunity to jump must be taken.
In the case where there are different jump sequences available, the player may chose which sequence to make, whether it results in the most pieces being taken or not.
Single pieces cannot jump backwards.
Kings:  When a player's piece lands in one of the squares at the far end of the board, its move ends there and it becomes a king.
A king is allowed to move or jump in any of the four diagonal directions within the limits of the board.
A king cannot jump over one of the player's own pieces.

Win or Draw:  A player wins by either capturing all of the other player's pieces or putting them into a position where they cannot move. A player can also win if the other player resigns or forfeits the game as a result of a violation of the rules.

A game is declared a draw when neither player can force a win.

Conduct of Players:
After it is decided who makes the first move, neither player is allowed to leave the board without the permission from the other player.

Neither player is allowed to distract the other. Examples include making signs or sounds, pointing, and unnecessary delays when moving a piece that has been touched.

A player who annoys the other player must be warned. On the second offense, the player forfeits the game.

Holding

So we just sign up here then (don't see anyone else)? Well I'll be there as female Naruto. If that isn't JUMP enough then I will be Sakura instead. :)

I don't know if my schedule will conflict, but I'm hoping to join in on the third cosplay checkers game if time provides.
I'll be cosplaying as China (Wang Yao) from Hetalia: Axis Powers (one of the random cospeep board players of course). (If I can't make it after all someone can just hop in my place or something right? I don't want to cause problems or anything. D:)

 Well if I am able too I would like to participate in the first game. I think I might come as Aono Tsukune from Rosario+Vampire as a board player

But if something goes wrong I might just end up as a cosplay piece in the third game cosplayed as Ryuho from Scryed

Although this could be hilarious with people riding on each other's backs or shoulders (thinking of Kenpachi and Yachiru from Bleach), certainly the crowns are a safer idea.  ;)

Hai, please count me in the first game as a piece.  I'll be in my Zenzo Hattori (Gintama) outfit most probably.

Good thing we won't have to carry someone. Though funny, id kill myself by the end xD

This will be my first one, so I'll definitely join the 2nd game as Akatsuki Sasuke.

I agree with you there! I added you as a cosplay piece on the 1st game. I could also use some Death Note, D. Grey man, Prince of Tennis, Yu Yu Hakusho, DBZ, and A WHOLE LOTTA BLEACH! :P

(before reading please note I'm just being silly and trying to start some friendly rivalry with the Bleach cosplayers...I have total respect for the fans and cosplayers of Bleach)

We on the Naruto side of the checkers board are just SO AWESOME that we have scared off the Bleach side!!  We will win just by virtue of true awesomeness.  (insert image of Tsunade striking a victory pose here)

Lol, don't forget technically they are all dead souls reapers, so i guess we can't really kill what we cannot see. Or maybe im just over thinking this a lil too much :p. Every time i say fanime i crack a big smile idk why, its like a condition i have or something lol.

I did think of roping BrightHeart76 into being Team Leader, but she has worked hard on the Naruto gathering so I figured she could play what ever part she would like. If you want to be in games one or three let me know and I will add you.

So a question was posed about being able to play as one character and then possibly play as another. For the most part this is possible if you put a game in between you. (*NOTE* Better be a quick change though cause the games shouldn't take longer than 45 minutes (Naruto cospeeps have their gathering at noon so I wanted to make sure we were done with the Bleach V Naruto game #2 which should start around 10:15 and end around 11 am.) Though we are planning on 45 minutes of fun for each game it could be shorter or longer, just depends on how epic each game gets :P

Now if you are doing game #2... well then you would probably have to stay as that character for game #3. However, if we continue and open it up to other cosplayer then you could change after game #2 and come back for game #4 (open to all cosplayers.)

The first three games are specifically for Shonen Jump cospeeps to compete/play in and in game #3 there is an opening for 13 random cospeeps so that is where any cosplayer can start participating.

So if you are not in game #2 then join game #1 and quick change for game #3.

Speaking of our random cospeep team, turns out my friend is cosplaying as Dr. Stein on a different day. He's trying to make a Hetalia costume, but for now I think it's safest to put him down as Waldo (you know, Where's Waldo?) since that's a quick costume. Sorry for the change and thanks! Hopefully we get some more Bleach/Naruto/Shonen Jump cosplayers!

We really could use more checkers players. Now if we can't get a team Bleach is there another team that would like to step in and play against Naruto? I'm even willing to 7/6 split of 2 Jump titles or 1/2 Jump 1/2 cosplayers.

I will be cosplaying Sexy No Jutsu Drunken Fist Rock Lee from Naruto for the event! I can play game one and two. Depending on when the Pirates vs Ninjas gathering is, I might have to leave before the third game, or any later games, so I think those would be the best opportunities for me to join in. 

I can be Gokudera from Reborn to help out the Jump side!

I might join. I will be hinata (from naruto group). Also I have to know how to play checkers?  Im really bad in checkers game.

I guess I could sign up on the Bleach side since you are so in need of people. I'll be HM Orihime. I was only going to wear it part of Saturday, but I guess I can wear multiple costumes Sunday.
....I look so much better as Konan from Naruto though, but oh well.

That would be soooooooo cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my goodness! I don't know any One Piece cosplayers, but oh, my goodness, if we could get that to happen, SO COOL!

I have updated the games. Now I know that I haven't had any takers from the One Piece group but I have suggested a Naruto v Naruto group if the Bleach team doesn't fill. or maybe a 1/2 Bleach and 1/2 other Jump group (Hint to KHR cospeeps) vers. Naruto. What ever works. Those that have signed up on the forums can participate in all three games (especially if we need peeps *LOL) so make sure you have your game.

As for playing checkers... well this is about the easiest game we could play but it is soooooooo fitting for Jump I couldn't resist it this year. Next year I hope to have the board done for the gatherings department so that it can be used more often... *Evil Grin*

I'm still looking for cosplayers and would like to have the first three games full before Fanime.

I love the checkers game. Its very fun. Im glad I join in. I do hope it will happen every year. If possible. Thank you so much. I had so much fun.

Can't believe Waldo and I couldn't make it. We were so upset-ran into some scheduling and sleep depravation problems. Hope it was fun, sorry we weren't there and hope to be there next year!

This was so awesome that I am bringing it back and making it better! I am looking for photos of the games so anyone who might have some please post a link and let us know which game they are from if possible.

So I have updated the first post for 2011 so sign ups can begin now if you KNOW your coming back to JUMP in on all the fun!

The games were super fun!  It was nice that it was early Sunday morning, since as the games went on, I noticed that one side of the board came more and more into the sunlight, and the game play seemed to concentrate on moving the pieces as quickly as possible to the shady side  ;) 

As one of the pieces in a layered outfit, I could appreciate this.  I forgot my camera unfortunately so I have no pics but there were two photographers who took part and I hope one or both of them will post pics.  I definitely want to take part in at least one game next year, B!  :D

Yes I was / am / will be again Tsunade.  The hokage hat was fun.  I love the pictures of the hokage hat on the Akatsuki.  :)
