I for one am glad the Rovers did a good job of routing con-goers from assembling in front of the obnoxious bible-thumpers. They don't deserve the attention.

Of course, all of that changes when Fanime Jesus pays them a visit. Then its acceptable to pay them every bit of attention. :P

Even if people didn't go near them, you could still hear them from a distance with their bloody megaphones, preaching that bs throughout the days they were there.   :P

yeah! The rovers were really nice, one was all like to me :" go ahead and take your picture, then please back up." ^_^ I don't want to post pics of them i'll just have them saved later.

I just ignored them when I passed by, the rovers thanked me for not interfering with them.

I did not enjoy the guy on the soap box yelling at us though. In front of the convention center there is a ton of space where his noise can go, but on the corner it can really hurt your ears. >.<

Does anybody know where they're from? As in ... do they come from a specific group or fellowship or church in the area, or are they all just random, motivated individuals who do this sort of thing on their free time?

I was just curious, because though I never really bother with them, I found it interesting that when I passed by dressed normally, one of the men noticed the crucifix necklace I always wear and he amicably approached me and struck up a conversation with plenty of 'God bless you's;' it was quite pleasant. But when I passed him again in cosplay (as Kamijo the vamp-o-phile no less !) I instead received disapproving looks and all that jazz.

Funny; I had been under the impression that being non-judgmental was a trait of an ideal Christian. Guh ... hence why I was a bit frustrated, as they really are painting fellow Christians in a bad light. =( Also wondering if any other Christians felt the same...? Not trying to start a deep discussion/derail the thread. x) Just wondering !

Hmm, no idea! lol ^_^ maybe they're a different sect of Christians? I wasn't dressed up or anything but when I was reading his poster one of the guys was like "You like my poster dude? haha" He seemed real nice ironically. LOL.

Sometimes I think they're just trolling and doing it for the lols. ^^

I had to put up with them on Saturday, during the Ace Attorney gathering. Fortunately we were quite far away from them, by the front-left wall of the con center.

Hey guys and gals,

Thanks so much for being so understanding and working with us this year! Thanks to you all just ignoring them keeping that nice huge gap and going about your day we accomplished exactly what they didn't want. They had no one to listen to them and in the end they just slinked away defeated.  (Talking about Saturday). Thanks again!

I fully respect their right to protest, but do they have to use the bullhorn? It was seriously annoying on Saturday when I wanted to check out the cosplay gatherings, but all I could hear was the nonsense they were spouting off.

When does their protesting start to infringe on our rights? Aren't there any laws or rules that could prevent them from bringing the bullhorn? For the most part I tried to ignore them (I don't much mind the signs), but that one day I could hear them IN the convention center, which is ridiculous.

Yeah, they were pretty annoying, but I was able to pretty much ignore them. It didn't even really seem like a protest, as they didn't have any signs protesting much of anything. Seemed more like a recruitment to me. The one that really annoyed me was the guy on the corner who was talking directly at people and gettin in their faces.

I know what you mean. I'm a Christian myself, and they were really disappointing me of how they acted. I also heard a lot of people say, "I'm atheist/agnostic/etc  because of them." which made me cry inside 'cause that's not how Christians really are.

I don't get why they judge so fast.  I was also wearing a crucifix with my normal everyday outfit and they didn't bother me at all versus when I was in my Kagome cosplay or Visual Kei they start yelling in my ear. Disturbance of the peace, no?

btw, you were Kamijo??? I"m PMing you with a pic! You and whoever did Hizaki did an amazing job!!!

Well, short of a protracted constitutional battle, we'll never be able to stop them from protesting, however, it they were that loud, there might be city ordinances that could at least make them shut off any amplification they were using.

Just wanted to clear up that I don't want to stop them from protesting, just the loudspeaker.

Not sure if that is still the official law but:

"10.16.010 Disturbing the peace prohibited.

No person shall disturb the peace, quiet and comfort of any neighborhood by creating therein any disturbing or unreasonably loud noise.

B. The following types of noises are declared to be disturbing to the peace, quiet and comfort of the neighborhood in which they are heard, and persons creating such noises are in violation of Section 10.16.010:

...6. Disturbing or unreasonably loud shouting, screaming, wailing or other vocalization that is disturbing or unreasonably loud to a reasonable person outside the facility or unit from which the noise emanates.

...10.16.040 Issuance of permit.

B. The chief of police may deny the permit application for any of the following reasons:

1. The applicant has been convicted of a crime related to disturbance of the peace within the past three years or has been found civilly liable for the creation of a public or private nuisance by means of unreasonably loud or disturbing noise.

2. The applicant has knowingly made false statements in the application.

3. The proposed location(s) and/or time(s) for the use of the loudspeaker, sound amplifier, or other similar equipment would be likely to create a disturbance of the peace as set out in Sections 10.16.010 and 10.16.020 of this code.

C. The permit shall be issued only after payment of the permit fee set forth in the schedule of fees established by resolution of the council.

D. 1. The chief of police may set reasonable time, place, manner, sound level and duration restrictions on the use of loudspeakers, sound amplifiers and similar devices as a condition for the issuance of a loudspeaker permit.

2. In setting reasonable time, place and manner restrictions, the chief of police may consider, but is not limited to consideration of, the following factors:

a. Proximity of the proposed use to residential neighborhoods, medical facilities and schools;

b. Other proposed applicants who wish to use the same or a nearby area during the same time period;

c. The likelihood that the proposed use will create a disturbance of the peace;"

Just saying this could come to Con go'ers advantage next year. I doubt they have permits to use the loud speaker and they were loud enough to be disruptive. Could always print out a copy of the code and hand it to the police who are actually pretty conveniently located nearby.

Best "protester" moment of the con for me.  Standing in line for FLOW we were all watching the guy standing there with his sign when the van drove by.  I hear from the girl beside me "Does that ACTUALLY say 'Turn or Burn'?"  The tone of voice and inflection made me laugh for days!

As far as the noise goes, here's an interesting fact-oid.  My room was in the Hilton, on the 10th floor and I could hear them from my room.  I concidered calling the front desk to complain, but realized that probably wouldn't do any good.

haha, I remember them. It was actually quite a funny/ awkward scene. My friend and I were laughing so hard. those cube cosplayers blocked them, and they had to struggle to keep clear so people could see them. it was so cute. XD
I didn't know what they were saying though, I was laughing too hard to listen.

See thats what I was complaining about!!! I don't care if they want to go screaming their lungs out at people but the megaphone disturbs all the photo shoots that people are doing out next to the fountain, can't we do something about the megaphones for next year???

also are they even protestting the con itself or just there due to the huge crowd looking to try and convert people? either way their presence seemed rather pointless and that it was a huge waste of time on their part.

Ya I don't believe they are protesting Fanime or anime.  They just know there is a big crowd at the Con center, that has a lot of ears. So they are Broadcasters not Protesters. They would probably be out side doing the same thing at any 14k people event. They could even be the same group of people that have been know to show up and Yell at Christen events. "I know it sounds weird but it has happened..."  But I vote SJPD remove the blow-horn.  But it was funny when fans had there own horns and where yelling back " see I got a horn too.... Not so loud are you.."  a simple fix for next year is that we play anime music from boom boxes or such just enough to drown them out but not loud enough to disturb hotel guest. then we have cool music that oh most all Fans know and like. and I really don't think Broadcasters would like to stand there not being heard and having to lesion to music in a foreign language.

There was somebody with a black sweatshirt that said on the back "Don't feed the trolls"? Or you saw a guy in a black sweatshirt saying that? Cause I wore a black shirt and I said that loudly, mostly because my friends would constantly want to stop and, as they said, 'School them on Christian behavior'. Funnily enough, my Pentecostal friend actually made one of them surrender in a belief match.

If I may clear up some questions...

These protesters are against, like, everything. They protest other conventions, Christian groups, even Christmas in the Park. All they care about is that there are a lot of people outside - they don't care that you're into anime, cosplay, or whatever.

These protesters are essentially trolls. They document everything and are just waiting to catch their martyrdom on camera. Pretending they don't exist is the best way to respond.

These protesters are very well-trained and well-prepared. They have heard everything you can think of and already have responses waiting. They have been doing this for years, and there is nothing new or clever you can say to make them leave or change their mind.

Arguing, counter-protesting, or simply talking to them is futile. They won't be persuaded. And whenever you engage with them, you're letting them win.

They are 100% legal and they work hard to remain legal. They're very careful, so we can't simply tell them to leave, or call the cops. But that said...

We are working on several fixes for this situation, and we have a lot of really great ideas to try next year. I'll be sad that there won't be the hilarious mashups with the Jesus cosplayers, but it's worth it to ensure our attendees have a great time and don't get bothered by jerks.

Ignoring them worked. While the protesters were annoying, what was even more annoying were kids who were like "Hey let's go antagonize the protesters! Whee!" No. All that does is provoke them and prove their point and then they have footage to show their church that they wrangled with the devil and won.

In case you didn't notice, the protesters left Saturday afternoon and didn't come back. I think they were there for a total of like, 8 or 10 hours. Mainly because people were thoroughly ignoring them for the most part. So, keep that in mind for next year.

Also: mad props to Rovers.

Loved the rovers this year too, I was also kidding about the counter-protest. That kind of sucks the fun times inside the convention for me anyways. Only problem I had was the slow response in removal of a few public nuisances and odd incidents such as the man masturbating in the fountain.

I'm glad they moved towards the end of the street where the Marriott was after a little while. Except, when they were there, they were stopping cosplayers and making rude remarks to their faces. It was very tiresome to watch.
In my honest opinion, though, as annoying as they were, it is probably for the best that they are ignored.

It's interesting, this group started coming to FanimeCon the same year they first showed up at CSU Chico. For those of you who don't know, CSU Chico used to be a major party school back in the 80's but now is pretty boring. It's also out in the middle of nowhere so you have to intentionally GO there in order to find it.

Anyways, one day while I was eating lunch, waiting to go to class to, I saw these protesters standing in the Free Speech area. I sat down by a tree nearby the one police officer who was keeping an eye on the situation from a afar and chatted with him. Periodically students would come up to him and ask (or demand) if he was going to remove them. I just kept laughing as the officer very calmly explained that they are exercising their right of free speech and that, unless they were actually threatening people, they were free to speak their minds. Telling someone that they're going to hell isn't a threat. Telling someone they will burn in a lake of fire for eternity if they don't stop sinning and embrace Jesus Christ in their hearts isn't a threat.

Long and short of it: These people are professionals. If you look closely, they have people off on the sides who aren't as flashy and aren't yelling things watching everything with cameras and video recorders. They make most of their money from lawsuits against people who assault them or cities that try to stop them. Even cities that have laws on the books are their target as many of those laws aren't technically legal and will result in a lawsuit. This is their job and they are good at it.

Like Tony said: If you engage with them, you're letting them win. You're not going to change their mind and you're not going to prove your point. The only way to win is to not play. Indeed, NOT playing is victory. Starving them of money that they earn from these things is the only way to stop them, but that is a long term strategy.

Personally, I find their statements meaningless because I don't subscribe to their belief structure. Indeed, most people DON'T have their belief structure as they don't represent anything even remotely related to Christianity at large, so I fail to see why this upsets so many people. They don't represent your faith, so why even acknowledge them? Why let their words affect you in any way, shape or form?

Simple answer to that, its because they insult
Fanime and Anime cosplayers all over the world just
to get attention! Iam Christian myself, but Iam not
protesting with protesters agianst something I enjoy
doing...cosplaying is my life, and Iam not going to let
those fake Christains make me stop cosplaying!
Cosplaying is something I do every-now-and-then,
so they will just have to deal with our cosplaying
disires. :/

It would be cool if fanime could hold some event right in front of the protestors.(including louder speakers) What better way to draw attention away from them.

This year it didn't go as crazy like last year or the year before. Thanks for the rovers for that. I was surprised one of them showed up on the first day of Fanime. I'll just continue to ignore them. Having them around every year is getting old.

How weird, I didn't notice them at all during the whole con. Or else that guy on the bullhorn from Monday was one of them, I'm not sure.

I can't help but notice that their group has gotten smaller this year. You think some of them are giving up?

Yea the guy on Monday was one of them, Saturday he brought 2 other people or so.

This was my first year so I hadn't seen it from other years but they don't seem to me like the type to give up very easily.

As was said many times, they're like trolls: The best way to deal with them is to ignore them.

They are obnoxious, annoying, and very good at following the letter of the law (if not the spirit). All they want is for someone to rise to their bait and attack them in some way which allows them to sue, or call the cops, or anything else.

To those of you congoers who worked with our Rovers to keep the traffic flow moving, and avoided giving them more fuel, thank you.

What the heck?! that's not exactly nice for them to call us names like that! btw isn't that megaphone they had a noise violation? those guys are so rude, I'm sure god wouldn't be so drastic to kill us/send us to hell for liking anime...god people like the protesters give Christians a bad name. lol thank god I'm catholic! XD

what made the protest start up anyways? I don't remember any protesters back when I came to Fanime in 04, though I have no clue if I would even remember I was only 13 back then and I can't even remember what I saw yesterday much less 6 years ago...

Okay, so interesting thing I heard from my college and Fanime buddy. One of my old college friends, who also happens to be a rover for Fanime, is now training officially for UFC as a fighter. He was given a match and guess who his opponent was?

One of the protesters.  And they recognized each other.

So while the protester guy is mouthing off on how his crew wants to get rid of Fanime, my other friend is just pumped to beat him (legally of course). I have yet to hear the outcome of the match.

Wearing flashy costumes makes you a sinner, yet beating the snot out of someone for sport is a-okay?

I don't remember learning this at my Church's Sunday school. Goes to show that some people don't really do things in the name of their faith, but for selfish personal reasons.

Holy crap! is there a video of this? I wanna see the protester get the crap beat out of him.

and how stupid is the protester, I highly doubt that San Jose will get rid of Fanime just cuz some small christian group protest. San Jose makes lots of money because of Fanime, with all the fanime goers buying food and other things. These protesters are just dumb sometimes, Fanime helps local business!!! (I know I love that little cake shop right next to the fairmont, expensive but oh so worth it!!!)

Hehehehe. Chris is the Rover's name. (He's the one who did the ass kicking, not the other way around)

Please resist the urge to taunt the demonstrators about getting their asses kicked, I'm sure they'll misconstrue it (intentionally or otherwise) to call it a threat.

Lets talk sad and funny at the same time.

The WBC people did show up                         ...all four of them.
There was crowd of about 150 attendees counter protesting.  The WBC people had so few people, they had to hold four signs each.
They left after half an hour.  I will give them brownie points for not yelling, or using a bull horn.  I'll post pictures later (the wifi here in my hotel is slooooooooooow).

Just a thought. Is there any chance of nabbing their usual spot with our own peaceful gathering?

There's enough of us we could rotate folks for it on a half hour basis and allow everyone to still make all the panels/gatherings they wish to. It may not stop them but it would force them to move further away from the convention center.
