Title: Ninja game!
Post by: pikaachi on May 31, 2010, 11:10:53 PM
Hey fanime! It was my first time playing the Ninja game. I think it's one of the best game you could play when you got nothing but your bodies. I've always been stuck playing finger game and such. I think this game would really help when there's too much sugar to handle.

Thanks to those who taught me how to play it and also those who played with me saturday night and sunday after midnight @_@ I had so much fun from this. I think this is one of the reasons my legs are aching right now. >_<

Are there any videos of the ninja games up yet?

Definitely agree with this. I was playing from about 1am saturday night till 5:45am then about the same the next night.

There should totally be an official convention ninja tournament next year. Everyone signed up could be split up into like 8 (or 16 depending on the number of registrants) groups. Then the winners from each group could face off in 1v1 matches like a standard ladder tournament to decide an overall winner. Would anyone else be interested in this?

As to videos, I think I have 1 or 2 short ones I could post. They aren't a very good representation of the awesomeness though. I'll put them on youtube and repost here when done.

Yeeee thank you, Relsek! I'm down in the tournament idea, but we really need to start discussing and cracking down on the rules. Too many people were moving their hands back after attempting to strike. I'm not talking about a full swing either, but more like a jab. Also, when did we go from being able to do one fluid motions to being able to take two steps and then doing twirls and things like that? >_>;;

There were also some great new additions to some of the circles this year though. Having a ref pointing randomly at the person who should be taking their turn, having multiple people going at the same time, everyone taking a turn to get up from uncomfortable positions, etc. I heard that there was a team ninja game, but I wasn't actually there to watch it ; ;

We definitely need someone to dj for us again next year :D Last year I was so pumped and constantly jumping like a freak all the time because of the high energy music >w< That also resulted in me playing non-stop for about 4-6 hours though. I had such a hard time walking down the stairs the next day to leave fanime x_x

yea same thing happened here and here i thought i learned my lesson and did the same thing and am recovering my calf and dislocated shoulder atm

Haha dislocated shoulder. Nice to know there are others whose bodies feel the same way XD
We really should clear up the rules for next year. Knowing who goes next is tricky enough, so the rules should be crystal clear and obeyed.

my middle finger got injured by ninja but i love ninja so i forgive him.

i saw that too and was angered. i even tried to call that shhh out while i was watching but no one else said anything.  >:( like bros, 2 steps is not fluid or fast enough for ninja no matter how ninja you may think you are.

@Aeredon I completely agree with you about the rules. It really frustrated me how much people were moving around. Here, I'll start a list of rules. If anyone has something to add let me know.

1) Moving:
    a) Only 1 jump OR step is allowed.
    b) Head movement is always allowed.
    c) Exact position (besides head) must be held between turns unless dodging.

2) Attack:
    a) 1 fluid motion that must begin before your body stops moving (unless no step is taken).
    b) Both hands can be moved at once, but not one after the other.
    c) Your hand(s) must remain where they are when they stop moving.
ie. In a jab, you can't retract your hand after it stops moving in the original direction.
    d) Flinching is allowed.
     e) You must start your attack within 5 seconds of the end of the previous person's move.

3) Dodging:
    a) 1 fluid motion that must begin after your attacker starts moving.
    b) Only 1 foot can move from it's position on the floor.
    b) If you move because an opponent flinches, you must return to your original position immediately.

4) Finals:
     a) Start back to back.
     b) After a count-down both players jump away into their stances.
     c) The player that didn't move last before the back-to-back goes first.

Additionally play areas can be marked out for the whole group and/or for the finals. A player would be out if they stepped at least 1 foot entirely outside of the line.

What does everyone think about these?

I was the kappa playing ninja monday morning. (buzzed and awake the entire con :3)

Hey to anyone who remembers

I thought of hosting a tournament as well.

Already decided the winning system

Each player plays 3 games with 10 people at a time (depending how many show up of coarse)
you get points for your placement
whoever has most points at end wins or tiebreaker

i like this and it sounds true to the original rules the only thing i want to add to it since it works is  for final 3-4 people to circle around them a bit so they are forced to attack then retreat across the whole room as well as 2-3 seconds between attacks

Only if it's in a smooth arc, not a jab/jerky motion.

Summah time = free time from school!

Why not in July or something? Question is where? I mean not all of us live in SJ where Fanime happened.

I'm glad that the game is alive and well after we started playing in the game room last year, but the rules this year were absurd.
I'll give you the original rules as I was taught them last year:
1) Moving:
     a) Only 1 jump OR step is allowed.
     b) Head movement is always allowed.
     c) Exact position (besides head) must be held between turns unless dodging.
     d) torso can't move to check where another person's hands are.  You have to keep your pose except for your head.
     e) Your hands must keep the open palm position at all times.  You can't close it at all.
     f) You can't hide your hands in your pocket, armpit, between your legs, or anything like that.  They have to stay visible and actually reachable.
     g) Don't leave your hands near anything you don't want touched or hit.  Don't put them neat your face, your butt, groin, or chest if you're a girl.
     h) You can't stay on the floor, this game was meant for standing originally.  You can't keep your hands on the floor either.  Do everything in your power to avoid being on the floor.  If you fall on the floor, you're allowed to use your next turn to "recover", where you can stand up and assume a position using more moves than the fluid rules apply.
     i) You can't cartwheel or dive into a roll.  Those aren't single fluid motions.
     j) If you assume a pose, you have to hold that pose.  If you can't hold that pose, you're eliminated.  This means if you stand on 1 leg and can't keep that pose, you lose.

2) Attack:
     a) 1 fluid motion that must be done while your body moves.  It's 1 fluid motion, not 2.  Step then strike is 2 moves.
     b) Both hands can be moved at once, but not one after the other.
     c) Your hand(s) must remain where they are when they stop moving.
ie. In a jab, you can't retract your hand after it stops moving in the original direction.
     d) You aren't allowed to make your opponent flinch.  You move or you don't, no faking out.
     e) The entire hand counts as a hit, the wrist and below is safe.
     f) You can't make any intentional body contact with your opponent excluding your hand slapping theirs.  You can't lean on anyone, put your hand on their shoulder, rest your foot on their leg, be back to back, no contact.  I heard about people body checking and elbow checking this year, are you guys serious?

3) Dodging:
     a) If you believe an opponent is attacking you, you may take a single step or pivot to avoid them.  The fluid motion rules apply to your upper body, but you can only take 1 step or pivot with your feet.
    b)  If you change position when you think they're attacking, but they didn't attack, you have to resume your original position.

I believe that's all of the original rules.

agree with all but the back to back i dont ever remember not being able to touch it was more like a taunt attack sure there where no hitting another player at all was a def rule but touching was over looked most of times like leg locking to block a player or going back to back so you know which way to move to react or so fourth but about elbowing ouch who would do that

These are original rules as I learned them.  Even when we played last year we often overlooked the no touching rule, but we tried to enforce it as much as possible.  You can assume the leg lock position as long as you're not actually touching them.  There's plenty of technicalities to no touching by merely being within a centimeter of them, which also inhibits their movement in a similar manner.  We've locked people in simply by surrounding them within a couple inches of their body, giving them no place to go without touching us.  The game is a lot more interesting in my opinion when you push the limits of no touching.  I got leg locked by a guy that clapped his hands around my ankle, but didn't touch my leg.  Unfortunately for him he couldn't get his hands out of the way in time and he promptly was slapped. :)

I highly suggest these rules to ensure the safety of the players and approval by passing rovers and staff. :)

there seems to be major conflict in the way southern california plays and northern california plays.

and the fact that everyone keeps running away from actual confrontation made ninja less enjoyable for me.

and people who always say "watch out" when i'm actually sneaking up behind someone.

god damn these people. GOD DAMN THEM ALL.

Ninja this year was.... interesting to say the least. I was Sanji early on Saturday and in a black Fedora with a button up shirt any other time I played this year.  Definitely a lot of rule confusion and a bit of butthurt which just left a bad taste to the game. However, those of you who were out for some clean fun were a blast to play with. It was great meeting up with familiar veterans from last year and spreading the ninja spirit. I'm certainly down for a gathering whenever.

I wish I could have joined!! I was always tired from Artist Alley. D: My bf went to a late night ninja game that went on for 3 hours. The people he played with were intense (people from my school). He had scratches and bruises from jumping into unseen bushes and tripping over other people. They were all sore for a week. :D

Ahhhh. I loved playing Ninja with you guys. I was the Professor Layton, otherwise dubbed "The Orange Ninja".  Sliding kills all day! Looking forward to next year!

Kakashi, guy in white, and mask were the toughest people to play in the Sunday game

But I think out of everyone in the Sunday game the mask guy was the toughest since he would usually make it to the last two

I agree with all of that but I believe the "1 step or pivot" gives too much leniency for the defender and I think with everyone else playing ninja (their time away from Fanime) might abuse or skew the rules on that one and when playing with others not use to their rules, confusion between players might happen and have a similar effect with Fanime this year. Just my suggestions, but I have to say when playing at Fanime'09 I didn't remember having a 1 step or pivot.

Relsek I agree with all of those rules as well, but I think with the rule of "f) You can't hide your hands in your pocket, armpit, between your legs, or anything like that.  They have to stay visible and actually reachable." covers the jab issue because what stops the defender from jabbing the attacker on his turn. Another thing I think jabs should be done with an slight elliptical arch and with no malicious intent for obvious reasons, essentially a tap on contact.

Those were just my suggestions.  ;)

i'll change the pivot rule.  i realized the next day it isn't allowed, but i never mentioned it. :)

as for an elliptical swing, that's up to you on how vulnerable you want to be after your move. ;)

there's tricks to your attacks to keep you safe after your move.

This has been one of my favorite things to do at Fanime since I learned it from JTchinoy back in 09 (I think it was).

So happy to see this game has grown throughout the con and can't wait to play with everyone again this year!
