Hello everyone. The 2010 BWBall went well this year and I just thought I would get an early jumpstart for next year. If you would like to request a song for next year, please request it on this thread and if at all possible post a link to the song (youtube, imeem, etc.) so we can listen to it. Even better, include the mp3 or email the song to
[email protected] and we will see if it fits. This is your chance to let us know what songs you would really like to hear at the BWBall since we do not take requests at the event. Thanks!
- Jim
BWBall Head 2010
wooot first post! as i mentioned in another forum, i would like to hear the song "Shall We Dance." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdyqmN5cnRQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdyqmN5cnRQ) since there's dialogue and such in it we'd probably have to look for a version that's just the song itself. I'll work on that.

This song definitely is fitting for the ball. Playing the song near beginning since everyone will be asking each other to dance.
Ah, so many great songs for a ball! :D Sorry if 3 songs is too much to suggest~

It is a good song to play but there are a couple of things with the song. One is, it is a V. Waltz. Depending on if that is taught next year we will see if we can incorporate it. Two, the beat changes in some parts (not including the talking part) so it might be hard for dancers to hear the beat in some parts. Again we will see if it fits next year.

First two songs were played this year. That does not mean that we won't play it next year. I am just letting you know that they were played this year at the Ball.
Third song, it is hard to hear a danceable beat to the music. It doesn't mean that we can't play it, it just means that it may be a bit hard to match it up to a dance. Thank you for the suggestions.
Piccahoe - classical stuff is great, only concern is V. Waltz and if dancers can hear the beat. Yes I know this year's BWBall it was hard to hear the beat regardless, :P but we will be remedying that for next year. Back at One is a good suggestion.
Thanks everyone for your input. Keep the suggestions coming. The earlier you get them in the earlier staff can listen to the music and evaluate it. :D

hmm yesh, but don't people prefer lyrical music? And the beat is hard to hear...but we can blast the music louder than so people can hear it >=)...just kidding
I sadly couldn't make this year, but I heard there were some solo dance numbers as well as a little bit of popular music, so in a purely preemptive move to avoid any possibility Wedding Schlock assaulting my ears, I've preemptively complied a comprehensive list of every famous Soul/Motown/Funk/RnB/Blues song that
isn't:
1: RESPECT ~ Aretha Franklin
2: YMCA ~ Village People
3: Celebration ~ Kool and the Gang
4: We Are Family ~ Kool and the Gang
5: I Feel Good ~ James Brown
6: Play that Funky Music White Boy ~ Wild Cherry
So hopefully I never have to hear any one of those ever again at least at Fanime.
Most people still know these songs, even if they don't know they know it--they're also some of the most eminently danceable stuff ever written so even if they don't normally listen to this stuff, they should still have a good time. All of it is as good, or better than those six, and have the distinct advantage of not being disgustingly overplayed. Obviously the list is huge, so I don't expect it in all or even in part to be used, but I figured I should probably offer up some verity if I'm going to kvetch. As I said before, though, this move is purely preemptive, and you might not have been planning anything like I've feared, so if that's the case, simply disregard this message.
Also, feel fee to use any of them that fit the partner dances too! It'd be fun to hear (for me at least, heh :p). Many of these (especially Reet Petite) are very easy swings.

Quoteok ok, enough with this classical stuff, I know nobody listens to this stuff.
Well, technically Schubert and Rachmaninoff are
Romantics, so nobody would listen to them if you called them--no, I kid, I'm not actually that much of an ass. ;p
I think that they tend to go for more romantic or classy types of music
Nope, we didn't play any of the six. We tended towards J-pop/K-pop/Anime OSTs in the playlist, except for WCS/hustle where we went more Top 40 (Katy Perry, Jay Sean). There were solo dances, but it was definitely a safety issue out on the floor...
Well, Rachmaninoff is from an Anime, Nodame, so at least that would count?
We should totally have some Lady Gaga songs to spice things up. 8DD

I was just going to post that we needed at least one Bowie song in the dance! I totally agree with you!
Lets Dance, Dancing in the Street, or Dance Magic would also be really good ones. :)
I surely can't request all of these, so I have some waltz suggestions for you to look into. Considering the nature of Fanime, all of these have some connection to a Japanese video game or anime.
Baten Kaitos
To the End of the Journey of Glittering Stars - Motoi Sakuraba
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XARPxxfAeUc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XARPxxfAeUc)
An elegant waltz, but the accent on the first note is subtle, and might cause some confusion with beginners.
Final Fantasy VIII
Fragments of Memories - Nobuo Uematsu
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8GmlKEKvjc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8GmlKEKvjc)
The song changes tempo midway through, which may confuse some people.
Final Fantasy X
To Zanarkand - Nobuo Uematsu
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lP_anjF6rA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lP_anjF6rA)
A solo piano piece, very easy to dance to.
Final Fantasy XI
The Grand Duchy of Jeuno - Naoshi Mizuta
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTDCzDgKSMY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTDCzDgKSMY)
When I think of a fancy Ball, I think of a song like this.
Eternal Sonata, Tom and Jerry, and some 15 different animes.
Grand Valse Brillante - Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2r7skqSkNM&feature=watch_response_rev (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2r7skqSkNM&feature=watch_response_rev)
Only play this if you want to upset people on the floor, or make me happy.
What do you think?
I have little knowledge of waltz. I just happen to like this little gem. XD
Waltz of the Moon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOWdP9RT3Pc) - Final Fantasy VIII OST
Actually, what is the theme this year? I know last year we were bending the playlist towards RPG music because last year's FanimeCon theme was anime RPGs...

IMO
To the End of the Journey of Glittering Stars
Might be little too tricky for the beginner like you stated.
Fragments of Memories
Sounds pretty nice to dance to although I still prefer Waltz to the Moon which went very well when I was at the Masquerade ball during AX 2009, great for V Waltz which I really enjoy alot. I think the Ball needs more room and variety for other games and anime.
To Zanarkand
I prefer the Orchestra version over the piano solo. Has more instrument involved and gives me that nice feel while dancing while it might need some adjustment for the ball. I think this would be a great addition.
The Grand Duchy of Jeuno
Doesn't feel like I'm at the Fancy Ball. Feels more like I'm just chilling inside of a fancy hallway of a mansion or just standing aside from the fancy dance floor than dancing romantically with my partner.
In terms of Waltz. We just have to organize about if all the con goers are ready to learn V Waltz and keep the dance floor safe as possible otherwise we might be looking for much slower waltz tempo.
In the spirit of anime, video games and Final Fantasy--I request this song~! :D

Trust me on this one on dancing to waltz. It has to be 3 count. When you do waltz you form a half box in 3 count and the finish the other half in 3 counts. If you can't feel the 3 count in a steady rhythm, it's not a waltz otherwise it's something else like either a night club 2 step or Borelo depending on the music. I took ballroom dance classes and done a lots of waltzing. Don't worry about the song you requested I think its a good song to slow dance to though especially I would have that time with my girlfriend.

What about the Macarana or the Cha Cha Slide? ...I know it's not really ballroom material, but it usually gets a lot of people dancing XD
Err...no. And no accessories (beach balls/limbo bar/inflatable moose/etc.) on the floor either. Sorry...
And no live concerts - we actually shot down those because we wanted to make it about having fun through dancing.
Thriller... cuz i know the whole dance and i think it would be fun if we could get the whole floor dancing it
Official policy is partner dances only. :( Unfortunately, people doing a line dance will tend to not use their peripheral vision. We had a few accidents last year from line dancers colliding with partner dancers. We do have a staff meeting this weekend, so I'll bring the line dancing issue up.

I have found that most people are willing to dance if they are asked at the ball. So there should not be a shortage of dance partners. If you can't find a dance partner, you can always look for the people wearing armbands. Those are your instructors and assistants for the weekend and if they are not busy or too tired, they will be more than happy to dance with you.

It has an Eastern feel to it.
I remember hearing this long last year, so I'm hoping it will play again this year!

Any music can be requested as long as it is danceable. The BWBall staff will go through all suggested songs and see if they are appropriate for the ball. Please remember that even though you request the song, BWBall has the final say on the music that will be played at the BWBall. I hope that helps.

"Love Song" - Big Bang (i think it actually sounds pretty nice but idk if ballroom material)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKZEmLvYVF0
Hibari's Theme Songs - Katekyo Hitman Reborn
-there's lots of versions of this http://www.mediafire.com/?jvyw0yem20z http://www.mediafire.com/?qyoxzwjwdjm
The Musician - D.Gray-man
-there's several versions of this too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVHPsMEeULQ

the first song i would like to request is just so awesome that you can't say no.
Zoot Suit Riot by Cherry Poppin' Daddies. It's a swing song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IqH3uliwJY
The second song i had in mind would be great for a big group of choreographed people dancing. So someone can teach a lot of people a dance to this song in one of the dance lessons! ;D
The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXSjIlbYklA
Hi, I just thought I should post in this thread because the old music request from 2010 was revived and made it a little confusing. This is the request thread for 2011 so please post here if you have a song suggestion.
I would also like to post an example of a waltz song for those browsing their game and anime music collection:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xZlhaLT7IY it's Dreamcatcher by Secret Garden, one of my all time favorite waltz songs
I think it would be a little easier having reference to what a waltz song sounds like instead of looking for songs with 'waltz' in the title. Those are generally Viennese Waltz (waltz on crack :P)
Thank you! :)
-Lilly
I'm not at all familiar with suitable music for dances, however I think these would work (and I'd love to dance to them):
Shiina Ringo -- Yume no Ato -- waltz
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x76rAgWhY8
Shiina Ringo -- Onaji yoru
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=is3kdSVhtEA
Shiina Ringo -- Stem ~ daimyou asobi hen (there is another version of Stem as well as a Japanese version, I recommend this version; also, there is no dialogue in the actual song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K58hOW2ZdRs
Tokyo Jihen -- Kokoro
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBQkM-_-zP8
Mitsuishi Kotono (Sailormoon) -- Tuxedo Mirage
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zIMKfWkIy0
Lee Haeri -- Red Bean/Hong Dou (Korean ver) (Faye Wong sings the original, which may be easier to find, but I like this arr. better)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYo2oc4CSM0
David Sylvian/Ryuichi Sakamoto -- Forbidden Colours (also a solo piano and full orchestral version if the vocals rub you the wrong way)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztVooc7uMnA
Youme -- Byul (Star) from 200 Pounds Beauty
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pnDM-fVBGI
Thanks~
VNV Nation - Illusion
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVf2EeTMNJo
I'll probably have a few more later, but that's one I really wanted to get in.
Louise Armstrong: La Vie En Rose (Wall-E)
Rikki/Susan Calloway (Distant Worlds): Sutaki Da ne (Final Fantasy X)
Distant Worlds: Aerith's Theme (Final Fantasy VII)
Distant Worlds: Theme of Love (Final Fantasy IV)
Susan Calloway (Distant Worlds): Distant Worlds (Final Fantasy XI)
yea...I'm planning to go there with the girl I'm currently dating :3
Everyone uses the FFVIII waltz song. I hope they pick something different this time.
Cardcaptor Sakura- Walt's of Courage - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QATRx86TyGc
Emma Victorian Romance- Belle of the Ball- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHhmR3TePHg
Emma Victorian Romance- Memory- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Scxd_bRLpQo
Personally, I think the opening theme to Howl's Moving Castle would be awesome at the ball.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8J68cPXhX4
Also, the opening for Princess Tutu, Morning Grace.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxV-E37cU2I
Thank you for all your suggestions. The staff of the Black and White Ball will listen to them all, we will also have the final say of which songs make the final cut.
Thank you,
Kevin
Here's a few songs that I think would be fantastic for Argentine Tango/Ballroom Tango. Sadly these aren't really anime/asian themed.
Traditional:
Libertango - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUAPf_ccobc
Tivoli - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzcFbGLFnmU (also works for waltz/viennese)
Basically anything by Gotan Project, but here's some standouts:
Santa Maria - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_5wIvSh-LU
Una Musica Brutal - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVQbyRZ_euQ
El Capitalismo Foráneo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuk8w5aziZQ
Queremos Paz - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3UpZydTFb0
And here's some contemporary songs that also work (w/ examples):
I Bust The Windows Out Your Car (Jazmine Sullivan) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOW8FUePfIA
Cry (Prince) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A6Wzg_nWdw
Kiss (Prince - Glee Version) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ymCQZ0WUqs
(Song:)Sanctuary (Artist:) Utada Hikaru (Game:) Kingdom Hearts II(English)
(Song:) Simple and Clean (Artist:) Utada Hikaru (Game:) Kingdom Hearts(English)
(Song:) Monochrome Kiss (Artist:) SID (Anime:) Kuroshitsugi(Black Butler)
(Song:) Rain (Artist:) SID (Anime:) FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
(Song:)A Hero Without a Name (Artist:) An Cafe (Anime:) DARKER THAN BLACK
(Song:) Howling (Artist:) Abingdon Boys School (Anime:) DARKER THAN BLACK
(Song) Ready Steady Go (Artist:) L~Arc~en~Ciel (Anime:) FullMetal Alchemist
I'm 99.99999999% sure that all of these songs aren't explicit.
Thank you for all your suggestions. The staff of the Black and White Ball will listen to them all, we will also have the final say of which songs make the final cut.
Thank you,
Kevin

Thank you everyone for all of your music requests and suggestions for this year! The Black and White Ball staff have finalized our playlist for this year's Black and White Ball. We could not have done it without the wonderful suggestions made by FanimeCon fans like yourself. We have sorted through the songs and have come up with a very diverse mix for the Ball. Again, thank you for your suggestions and requests! We hope to see you at the Black and White Ball on Sunday, May 29 in the Regency Ballroom at The San Jose Fairmont Hotel.

Hey everyone,
Since the Dept. Head of Black & White Ball has announced that the playlist is now completed, I am going to lock this thread.
The suggestion post for next year's playlist will be posted by the Dept. Head after FanimeCon has ended.
Thank you for all your suggestions! Have a fantastic time at the dance lessons and FanimeCon's Black & White Ball.
