Title: Fanimecon 2011 - Suggestions for E-Gaming
Post by: Robo-tech on July 30, 2010, 12:39:20 PM
We have lots of plans for expansion of the E-Gaming department for the upcoming con, and we want to know what you would like to see.

For example, what games would you like to see featured?  Are there any tournaments you would like to see run?  Are there any genres of game that you enjoy that you would like to be available?

Your replies will help dictate the direction we take our efforts in the coming months leading up to con.  With your help, we will help to make Fanimecon even more amazing than it was this year.  Remember, this is by fans, for fans, so thank you in advance for your input!

One thing I really missed this last year was Rock Band.  I'm not much of a social gamer - I haven't had much interest in fighters since Street Fighter II/Mortal Kombat were in arcades - but RB is the exception to this.  The keyboard that's being added to RB3 should make the game even more fun in a group environment, least of all because that will mean up to SEVEN people can play at a time with harmonized vocals.  The only other thing I might add to that would be to check on the feasibility of having a mock stage set up for the game.  You know, like RB on Stage Zero, only not on Stage Zero.  Mini concerts going on all night would be pretty cool.

That's the only game I would request, since RPGs don't make for the best pick-up-n'play experiences.  However, more games and a greater variety of them is always a good thing, so I'd say let the suggestions roll in and cram in whatever you can (while hopefully still allowing space for a '11 swap meet)!

this rockband 3 idea does sound fun.

we would have a "battle of the bands" tournament  ~ or for random chaos, see how well random people play versus a registered group of 7 friends.

(https://forums.fanime.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.newsarama.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fuserpics%2F10006%2Fscott_pilgrim_3_500.jpg&hash=25f065fc5d2a2cc0232378c232cbbb08724430d7)
or we can go the scott pilgrim route, and have 7 on 1 battles for world domination or true [Lesbian] Love.

that and of course if MVC3 is out, massive tournaments on that too.

I honestly don't really care what games you guys have, but for the competitive games, for the love of god use the Competitive Formats for them.
The Halo Tourney and the Pokemon tournament made me real sad. They were set up to be player friendly in place of competitive settings. I am quite certain that this would not do much to player turn outs either. If anything it would draw out the competitive players into playing the Tourney more. Casual players could really give a damn what the settings are and will come and play if they want to regardless.

To address pokemon:
As the coordinator, I am not a singles format fan, as it's too blissey dominated.  i'm an advocate of 2v2 and the upcoming 3v3 format.
Having repeated items also removes the need for imagination in my opinion, as all you would have to do is insert a leftovers of life orb if you're not sure what else to do.  This is why there's an item clause.
Unlike other games, pokemon doesn't have a standardized tournament format beyond smogon, who only focus on 1v1 format.
After watching walrein in hail vs. blissey in 2009, I decided that Fanime will be a 2v2/ 3v3 format promoter.  With the 3v3 format coming out next year, you can probably expect that to be the next format.  I'm personally looking into a TR team again.
Aside from Nintendo's banning of event only legendaries, I think their rules are much more interesting to go by and force people to have much more varied teams due to the item clause.  VGC 2009 was a very interesting pokemon season, with various teams and pokemon often deemed UU or NU being used.

So uh... any possible way to get a huge screen to display tournaments? I think Ken Chan was talking about that...

More televisions, more setups.

Especially if, attendee-wise, we are still going to continue to grow.

What sucks about that is E-Gaming (and our equipment) is only as massive as we are. :(

Starcraft 2....? :D Or are there only console games? Sorry, this'll be my first fanime, but I would LOVE to see some Starcraft 2 action, or Team Fortress 2, or maybe some other PC game. I'm not a big console gamer and games like Halo and such are sort of a let down for me, way too sluggish and until Reach, Halo was limited in tactics with building a team of different players like TF2 has. Besides, mouse+keyboard>controller. :P But just wondering, I know the SC2 community is huge now and if we do have it, I'd love to participate, or even commentate for the games. :D

EDIT: Whoops, just read the sticky on last years games and there are PC games listed! So yes, Starcraft 2 is my major suggestion. I noticed you guys had the first one last year. :D Of course it WAS the only PC game played, haha, where's the love?

Woh, woh, woh. Did you just say Reach is less Sluggish then other Halo Games? If so that is incorrect. Halo Reach is much slower and clunky then the other Halos, even with Sprint. Many of the perks in the game slow it down as it allows players to run away like know bodies business or turtle in a corner. And most of them make the game skill-less at that..

I'd like to see some of the newer anime-related games there.

The 2nd Naruto fighting game for the ps3/360 is pretty enjoyable. A tournament would be fun; even better, a tournament featuring cosplayers playing as their character! ;P

Pretty sure it's too late for this but... I would like gaming to have its own room rather than share with swap meet, it's simply too crowded during the peak of swap meet time.

Can we have a Melty Blood Actress Again arcade machine for fanime this year? Also a Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 setup and tournament would be awesome too.

Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Oh and, for any games in general, tournaments with some form of seeding and consistent rules.  2010's "1v1 SSB Brawl tournament" had no seeding at all(so people who signed up together were the first to fight each other) and the first two rounds of the tournament were 3-way or 4-way Free For All matches.   I have nothing against free for alls, but dont say its a 1v1 tournament if its not.  Also,  there is no better way to ruin a gaming experience for people than to have a tournament and make them face their friends from home who they came to the con with in the very first round.

More suggestions:

-Amplitude
-Frequency
-Killer7
-Taiko Drummaster

I've got an Actress Again setup myself, I'll talk to arcade about getting that.  I think there's a SSFIV update for console by the time Fanime rolls around, I'm sure for a tournament setting we'll figure that out as well.

Stay tuned for Arcade in a different thread as eGaming does not handle arcade.  If arcade has DDR or ITG for FanimeCon 2011, we cannot have console setups on TV's except for tournaments. And yes, the highly requested CobaltFlux/RedOctane/MyMyBox/DDRGame/Custom Arcade-style Pads will return.  ;D

This one is mainly console, but if you can get enough people, why not have an online multiplayer run for Phantasy Star Portable 2? I'm a member of the PSO World fan community and I think I can try to organize some people to get on.

And when do you think we will get a listing (or a 'most likely'-list) of games available?

I wasn't sure if I should branch off my own thread yet, I'll probably do that soon.  Like previous years, we haven't had anything beyond a tentative list until very close to con, because the games come from several different locations.  Right now I can't confirm anything or who will be there, but I will say that I will have my own ITG2 boxor, DDR Extreme, Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code, possibly a newer Pop'n upgrade, and some stuff like TGM3 and shmups to bring with me.  Whether I can work something out for them to be used is another story, but I'm very hopeful.

This means we could potentially run Extreme or ITG for the DDR tournament with a supergun, even if we can't use their cabs.

If there was honestly enough interest, I would bring my cab just for the tournament but that's kinda overkill ._.

Is it too early or late or redundant to have an arcade request thread for '11?

Music: DDR X/X2, ITG2 modded, PPP2*, Pop n', Technika 2, GF/DM, IIDX 18
Racing: Initial D 5 or 6, WMMT3DX+, Daytona USA, Mario Kart GP2
Fighters: the usual
Prize: UFO catchers, Candy Machine
Pinball machines

*I don't know exactly why ParaParaParadise is still popular after almost 10 years. I'm not complaining, cuz I love the socialness of it. Maybe add a panel or workshop about it or something...

We have had a few threads asking for feedback on the PC Gaming section of E-Gaming stickied for some time now.  To reduce the clutter of the board, we have decided to un-sticky those threads and move the request for feedback to this thread.

Here is what I am seeing so far:

Not surprisingly, the most requested title is Starcraft II.  We would love to have this title available, but it requires Internet connectivity for the gaming machines, which is proving very difficult.  Trust me:  If we can get it, and if we can get SC2, we will!

I am also seeing a large call for Black Ops and Team Fortress 2, and a few people seem curious about Portal 2.  We also see a few requests for Counter-Strike: Source, as well as Peggle (which would just be fun to watch!)

We were also tracking to see whether there was much of a demand for a "classic gaming" section of PC Gaming, using older machines to run older titles.  So far, we are not seeing much fervor over that idea, so we will focus our efforts on supporting more modern titles.

We are also surprised that there has not been much demand for racing games in the PC area.  We were hoping that the PC Gaming section would focus on titles and genres that were not as well represented in the Console Gaming area, which is why we are happy to see that SC2 and TF2 are popular requests.  However, there was not much discussion about having racing titles available, so we will shift our attention to other areas.

We still have a few months to work on making E-Gaming as awesome as we can, and we still want your thoughts.  If you have any suggestions on how we can make either the Console Gaming or PC Gaming sections better, please continue to post your thoughts in this thread.  (We really need the thoughts in this thread, because e-mails, PMs, Twitter posts and Facebook replies are more difficult to track.)

For your information, here are the links to the original polls asking for thoughts on specific games in the PC Gaming area:

See you in May!

Hehe.  We are talking about the majority of attendees being newer generation.  They probably have either never heard about gaming in the 90's or at least not put much thought towards it.

As far as old DOS games are concerned, yeah, we are working on it.  Just give us suggestions.  =)

Good suggestions for older FPS games for deathmatch would be like Doom 2 (dwango5 custom map set for dm), Quake 1-3 (any of them are really good) even older Build engine games like Blood would be pretty neat. There would probably be a lot of people that don't post on the forums, but once they see the older games they'd probably go nuts haha. If you don't have dos machines, you can always use DosBox for playing them (really easy to set up too I can help explain at the next meeting or whenever.)

With Doom, you can even play it on modern pcs without the need of Dosbox or anything, just use a newer source port (you still need the .wad files, think of them as the game files.) I recommend using Chocolate Doom or PrBoom+, they're easy to set up and you don't need ancient technology to make them run. I'm actually unsure about PrBoom+ lan capability, as it's more of a TAS utility than for co-op, but I do know Chocolate Doom does allow for lan up to 4 players (like Original Doom.) If you want to delve further you can use even more modern source ports like Zdaemon (which needs an internet connection I think?) or Skulltag (don't need an internet connection.) These are based off Zdoom and have a lot of their limits taken off (you can play with up to 32 people iirc) they do introduce mouse look and jumping though (which I personally don't like in Doom and some techniques used for DM are unable to be used in the ports.) If you need to know more feel free to ask me :)

SUPER SMASH BROS. MELEE

We need a tournament for this game. Its more competitive than "Brawl" and far more exciting and fast paced.

Also any of the "GEARS OF WAR" franchise would be a must for being an XBox exclusive. Again, it would be way more exciting than a "Forza" tournament.

Please consider my suggestions, and if completely rejected please let me know as-well so i won't be keeping my hopes up for nothing.

SUPER SMASH BROS. MELEE

We need a tournament for this game. Its more competitive than "Brawl" and far more exciting and fast paced.

Note that we are still possibly adding more tournaments.  In the meantime, please reply here:
