This is a marginally acceptable location. If you want me to move it, I can too. Meetings, Gatherings, and Get Togethers is a good place too. The Everything Else forum works too.
This forum does not get really active till Feb or so.
Oh shoot D: well thats alright ;) i have a long time and just move it to any place acceptable or where you think i would get the most help D:
Post some info like age, types of anime you like, cosplay or not. online games you like to play. just stuff that will help others to relate to you.
I don't know about hanging out or whatever (I'm shy and I don't like talking to people I don't know very well) but hopefully I can answer a couple questions. I wouldn't exactly call myself a veteran since I've only gone once, but I am friends with a few staff members and I help run a convention (http://www.asahicon.org/) at my school, so I have a good idea of how conventions work.
The date of the convention is Memorial Day weekend, as always, which would make it May 27-30. (May 26-30 if you count Day Zero.)
As for meetups and hotel, I already have my own group already set up, so I can't really help you there. Like I said, I don't like talking to people outside my group of friends.
For cosplay, either find a friend to make one for you or, if you're not planning on participating in the masquerade, try this site (http://www.ahappydeal.com/Cosplay-and-Costumes-st1-sid93.html). It's what I'm planning on using. For more cosplay questions, it'd be best to check out Fanime's cosplay forum (http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/board,30.0.html).
If you have any other questions about Fanime, it can't hurt to ask. I can't guarantee I have all the answers, but at least I can be helpful somewhere. ^^

I am interested in getting to know you and maybe hanging out at the con or before that if we live close enough.I am 18 just turned it in November. If you pm me I would gladly give you my fb account. a chance to set up meetings with new people that you'd rather hang with than your old, weird friends? Sounds cool. I've been to 3 of these fanimes since 07' & the highlight of the con for me is meeting the people while posing as the sane one of these gatherings. Besides, with everybody else being in their own groups, no 1 person should be left out, especially the first-time attenders. As a person of the people, I'd consider it an honor to hang with ya's. As for my backround info, i'll keep that to myself. If interested in hanging out, just keep an eye out for a guy in a dark suit w/ a fedora on his head when the con rolls around. If not that, then with a Shinigami-sama hoodie.
It's hard for me to make friends by just going to a convention, so I staff. (:< If you don't want to staff, you can also volunteer if you find yourself roaming around doing nothing with no one. >.>;
(I made friends with some awesome volunteers and now they're on staff. 8DDD YAAAYYY MEEEE )
That way, I'll see the same people for a weekend, and whether they like me or not, they have to interact with me. (:<<<<
Jaykay. Nah, they usually love me, and because of the proximity thing, it's easy to make friends. :D
What you can also do is join someone's room that you don't know and hope that you guys get along. That works too.
Wishing y'all the best. :D
yay for making friends at fanime!
usually when my friends arent there (which is usually friday because of the karaoke contest), i just wander around
gets kinda lonely sometimes
but ill be 20 by the time this years convention comes up and this will be my 6th year
ive been goin since i was a freshman in high school and i love it every single time
since this is ur first time, i wouldn't say volunteer or staff
u want to take ur time gettin to kno your surroundings and the different events that are goin on
keep a daily update on the forums and different activities (dances, contests, fanimaid, stage zero, etc)
and soon ull find ppl that always appear at the same things u do
then VOILA! friend!...well maybe not that simple but u get the idea :D
should ppl feel like hangin wit an old veteran (i hate the word old :'() ill PROBABLY be at con for three days
friday: most likely for karaoke contest
sat and sun: wit some of my high school friends that have also gone as much as i have
good luck and welcome to the world of fanime first-timers!! :)
This will be my 4th time going and all I can say is you should have no problems, everybody at fanime is incredibly crazy (in the good way) and friendly!

I very much agree with Atlus! My first Fanime Con was last year and everyone was super nice! ;D
I didn't realize how many people were actually going until that Friday, it was pretty awesome!
Last year was my first year, and I staffed as a Rover. I got to see a lot of things and I got yanked out of my comfort zone and met some really cool people and then I got worked into the ground. heheh. It was really fun and people are as crazy as they sound (a handful are crazier), but yeah. You should check out what you can as an attendee. There's so much going on it's easy to miss something good. like the autograph session for FLOW. Take your time to talk to people, mingle a little bit and if they interest you make plans to see them later. Oh, yeah. There will be plenty of time to mingle with others in the registration or pre-registration lines. XD
I hope to see you out there, Ryan!
@RyanNulph: You've already taken a huge step to meeting people at Fanime by joining the forums. Cuz it seems like the convention lasts all year long in these parts.

There usually is a forum gathering somewhere and sometime during the convention specifically for forum members. I don't know anything lately about it though.

Yeap! I absolutely agree! I joined the forums about a month before Fanime and it hasn't even been a year yet and I'm already over 3000 posts! I actually did appear at the forums gathering but only very briefly. I've met a few people here in real life. AuroraDreamer, Maki, Somebody, and Jerry; well, I think everyone here that attended 2010 has met Jerry. I can't imagine anyone missing his bright yellow shirt, the balloons, and a huge backpack.

They go around taking soil samples from attendees and radio back results to the Fanime HQ.
Lol. Rovers are the guys make sure the con is going well for attendees. They can be spotted with their radios and bright fluorescent yellow armbands.

Reserving your posts or something Hisuitsume? :/
LOL, well, I find making friends at Fanime isn't that hard if you wait in line at the Badge-Pickup day!
Having to stand there for hours, I made about 10 new friends!!! ♥ ♥ ♥
People are generally reaaaally nice, so just be open and have fun!
People cultivate to people that are having fun! ;3
It's one of my favorite things about Fanime~
Fanime is my favorite convention that I go to. People are far more relaxed here, but I feel that that's because things are better run at this convention than certain other California conventions that are run on the fourth of July weekend....But I think Fanime is a good first convention since it's not too large. Large conventions can be very overwhelming for the first timer.
People are very friendly at Fanime, and you'll find no shortage of people to talk to in lines. I bring Japanese snackies to share with others and my Pokewalker. Getting a little electronic gift while waiting in a long line can make things a bit brighter. Other people bring stuff to give to others - last year there was a girl who handed out glow sticks to the first few people in line for the FLOW concert. I love to talk about stuff people collect, and you'll find no shortage of people that will enjoy talking about their collections. Just keep an open mind, relax and drink lots of fluids. It can be warm in San Jose in late May.
if anything, it's pretty easy to get a conversation going with somebody & later befriending them. Just go up to them & ask who they're cosplaying as & one thing will lead to another. Just some advice you could use...
My conversation starter is to ask if I can have a picture with them!
Then we talk about who we are cosplaying as,
what events we're going to,
and the gatherings that are happening that day.
Fanime really is a friendly place that is easy to make friends at!
based on what luca said, starting a conversation is easy peasy
if they're cosplaying, ask them wat they're cosplaying as and then ask questions about what anime they like and so on and so forth
if they're NOT cosplaying, ask them where they're from, how long they've been to fanime and what are some of their favorite events, if they have any, or what they're looking for
sometimes, the best way to start a conversation is just to say 'hi' :D
hope to meet u there! :)
ohh no :(
well i hope you get to go :)
Well things are interestingly complicated in virginia ;-; i miss california xD lol how is everyone and ooo my thread is close to reaching 1337 posts xD
Add me on facebook if you want anyone :P
maybe will go to the next fanime con
