I heard about the 1000 paper cranes story from my art teacher last year so I decided to try it. I got to about 650 or so before I stopped haha I think this sounds like a really cool idea and I would love to contribute a crane :)

Did you want to set up a table somewhere, or maybe at the gatherings info table that's usually between the two staircases, with a supply of origami paper so people/cosplayers could get a sheet and make a crane right there? I can donate several packs of the origami paper in various sizes (either solid colors or a very light pattern that anything written on could be read) towards this.
Wait, will the table be up on Friday?
(I and my family did 1000 cranes when I was going thru chemo and radiation therapy back in '88)

Awesome! Yes the table will be up on Friday. I am glad that people are interested in this. I'm going to be checking out the locations this weekend and making sure everything is a go and I am going to take some pictures too. Thank you :)

I would love to participate~
I lost one of my best friends ( from across the world) in November, and I haven't really had the chance to do anything solid for him, this would be a perfect thing to do <3
I would love to particiapte, though I am not any good at making cranes. but this sounds so amazing and bueatiful.
This sounds like a lovely idea, B -- please keep us posted! Not sure if I'll be able to make a Friday eve timeslot, but if there's somewhere to drop off cranes I'll certainly bring mine by regardless. (And if you need paper donations or help in some fashion with this, let me know? I think I still have a few packs lying around and I'd love to help.)

I've got enough packs of the (almost) 6x6 inch origami paper for at least 1000 cranes. Plus I have enough of 3x3 inch size for about 900 smaller size cranes. I'll be at my hotel Thursday afternoon (will be at swap meet that evening) so let me know where/when I can drop these off to you. I can get some heavy duty sewing thread and needles for you if you need them for attaching the cranes together.
This is a splendid idea. I'm all for it! If there's a booth made I'll gladly stop by and make some! C:
Thank you everyone for helping with this. I really appreciate the support.
I will be onsite Thursday evening (after all I have the old school cosplay gathering @ 6 pm :P ) So you can leave it with me & my staff. Or at ConOps
I am going to have the donated origami paper at Gatherings Table & at CH1 MRH . If someone wants to participate in the ceremony then they bring their crane, if they want to contribute cranes they can drop them off at either location or come to the ceremony.
I wish I had someone to do a Origami Q & D for the Hangout on Friday that peeps could come to.. that would be cool too. Hummm...

I'd be more than willing to spend some time Friday there to show people, if you'd like, whether as a formal Q&D or something more informal. Anytime before 5pm works for me. (I don't admittedly remember much but cranes off the top of my head these days, but cranes seem to be the focus for this. XD )
If you've got space at the Cosplayer Gatherings table, that's more centrally located -- it'd be neat to put someone there with a stack of paper in case people passing by want to make a crane then and there.
I love this idea! 2011-2012 has probably been the most difficult year of my life - absolutely no exaggerations in that, either. This really couldn't have come at a better time~ <3
You can count me in on donating a few strings of cranes. The 1k story always touches me.
This is a wonderful idea BSaphire~ And when I drop mine off I'll be happy to show a few people how to make them. I make cranes all the time at work when I'm bored. lol
You can count on me. ;) I'll be seeing you on Thursday and I can donate a spool of string that was given to me by my grandmother-in-law shortly after I got married last year. A gift - and a blessing that I want to keep giving.

So I picked up some Origami Paper too and I will show peeps how to make paper cranes when I can.
@ TifaIA: Thank you! Could you show peeps @ a Q & D in the Hangout on Friday too? If you and Charis each do one then more people could learn and more cranes :)
@ Cospeeps: What evening and what times would work for all of you. This has become such a special thing that I am more than willing to make the time on any day (more than one if necessary) to do this. I personally have had a very life changing year filled with loss, but I have the most wonderful group of friends and family that have been helping me step by step. This is not a unique story and as some of you have posted ... it is a very special thing for all of you too. Let's make this happen for all of us!

My plan is Friday evening sometime for the ceremony, but peeps can make cranes all weekend or as long as we have paper :)
So day and time is set: Friday 7:30 pm @ FCC HS.
You don't have to be in cosplay to attend.
Much love

Will more help be needed to show how to fold a crane? If so I'd like to help.

I havent lost anything extremely signifanct, but this year my best friend did get married and moved away which did incite a lot of heartbreak considering we barely see each other at all anymore since she married into the army, but Id love to make a crane for her and her husband, who Ive also known for years. Right now he is deployed and Id like crane to symbolize his safe return to her and us.

That is as good a reason as any and it doesn't have to be significant to others, it only needs to be significant to you. :) I look forward to seeing you.
@ All Cosplayers: So I have this set for 7:30 pm on Friday ~ FCC HS. Bring your crane (s) with a string running through it under the legs and out the top approx. 12" - 24" long. TifaIA and Charis said they will help people learn to fold cranes amd I will most likely have them set up at the gatherings table location. They can come by when ever they are free and help all of you learn. I am training my staff to do them too.
I will take any origami paper donations of any size or color and string at the cosplayer gatherings table or at the cosplayer hangout. Paper crane folding will be all weekend or until supplies run out. If anyone wants to do a Q&D on Origami Folding let me know ASAP. I luv workshops! Can't wait to sit in on the NO FEAR PROPS! workshop/Q & D on Saturday in CH1 MRH... (Check the gatherings list for info or on the fanime web site)
Thank you again cospeeps! Love & Peace!

When/where would you suggest volunteers show up to help? c:
I'll be cosplaying Ivan from Tiger & Bunny (aka Origami Cyclone) and I just keep thinking how ridiculously appropriate it'd be to help out at some point over the weekend. I really want to, whether it's just helping teach cranes at a table, or even holding or helping out with a workshop. I know how to fold a few things (cranes, ninja stars, bunnies, cats, and hearts), I've just never run or even attended a workshop before so I'm just not sure where to start... ^-^;

How about an Origami for beginners and all you will need to do is bring some origami paper. you can work with small groups and show them how to make stuff. Give me a day and a time and I will try to get it on printed.. otherwise I will just have it as a write in.
Thank You :)

Both times are available in CH1 MRH (Cosplayer Hangout - Market Room Hilton Hotel) If you are interested in doing one each day that would be AWESOME! I will have to write it in @ con though since everything is being printed now If that's ok?

That sounds like fun. I'm usually not that busy at cons, so there shouldn't be any trouble.

No clue. :/ I was there Friday to help show people how to make cranes and dropped off a lot of extra paper. One of the staff members informed me it was cancelled Friday and rescheduled for Saturday, but no one knew what time. It was a great idea so I hope it didn't fall through. :(
Well, both times I stopped by for my workshops no one showed up, and there were only a few cranes on Saturday :c Oh well.
So my whole department was dancing to the FanimeCon 2012 Shufflin which caused issues with this happening... SO in 2013 I WILL MAKE THIS HAPPEN! I spoke with Ric Meyers and he taught me a really cool Pen Shui technique for the body to help with mind and body and I wanted to show everyone so I will be doing that in 2013. I'm REALLY sorry that this didn't happen this year, but with all the origami paper and stuff donated (which I really appreciate) we will be doing it again.
What I would like to know is would anyone be willing to do a workshop on origami paper folding for beginners? I want to get the Cosplayer Hangout schedule in the program guide and on the website next year so I'm starting EARLY!
Just so peeps know, an advantage to having your panel/workshop/Q & D's with the Cosplayer Hangout is that I can schedule your times to fit more of your gathering/cosplaying time during FanimeCon 2013.
Again, I am sorry that this didn't happen this year, but I had such a possitive response to it that I promise to make sure this happens on Friday night for 2013.
A wish of HOPE to all the Cosplayers out here!
BSaphire
ya... I came to the spot I was shown where it was with a crane and i waited outside by myself for a half hr. it wasnt fun.....
I'm glad to hear that is more likely to happen next year.
I'll be glad to help demonstrate. I'll probably be at swap meet again next year, so Friday morning (or before 3pm) or any time Saturday or Sunday (if you go that long) would be fine for me.
@LakuriSyaoran: I am sorry that no one talked to you that was on my staff :( I sent you a message on the C.c forum.
@ BunofGovt: Do you want to do just cranes or would you be willing to do an "Origami for Begginers" workshop? If you want to do a workshop on Friday that would be very cool. I want to get the CH programming done WAY in advance so I can get it in the program guide. I would like to have one workshop each day so if others would like to do an "Origami for Begginers" or if you can do advanced that would be cool too, just post here and we will get it listed.
As of right now I have no clue on what is happening with Cosplay Masquerade, so I am going to play it as everything will stay on Sunday for 2013 till I hear otherwise.

Origami for Beginners would be okay (basic folds, some easy items to start with, paper choices, folding the crane) with me.
Hi Cospeeps!
Happy Thanksgiving!
I wanted to update that I have been making cranes and I am up to 45 little ones! I sure hope others are out there too!
I moved again and haven't been able to post much, but I will try to get everything cleaned up and running smoothly soon. Work on your folding skills and crane making so we will have 1000 cranes by Fanime 2013. I haven't confirmed origami making workshops yet, but if you are interested in hosting one leave me a pm. I will get back to you but it make take me a little while longer.
Love and Peace COSPEEPS!

hey if you want to make a bunch before fanime let me know as i'll try to get them from ya asap and get them on strings ^^ also you can find how to on google or youtube. ><
I really hope this event happens for Fanime 2013.
At the very end of 2012 I lost my grandmother, who I have lived with my whole life and been close to. She loved origami and made countless cranes and butterflies which are all over our house. I would love to bring a few of her cranes for this ceremony, to remember her and also thank her for introducing me to Japanese culture, which is a huge part of who I am.
Impending Massive Update
I would love to join in this!
Hey Saphire, I'm sorry it's been so long. I've been very busy this year and sadly this forum had to take a back burner.
This sounds like a wonderful idea. I myself can't make a paper crane to save my life but my boyfriend can make them out of 1/12 of a starbursts wrapper. He will be at the con with me and I'm sure he'd love to help.
I'd love to participate in this as well :)
This is set for Friday evening @ 7 pm at G6. It would be awesome if people would bring paper cranes already complete to con if possible, but we will have origami paper and staff to help for those who want to do this at Fanime in the Cosplayer Hangout.
I look forward to seeing this happen this year. If you would like to say any words at the event please send me a pm.
Peace and Love to all!

I updated the first post a while back and I thought I would share a fond memory I had with Elizabeth here with all of you.
I met Elizabeth back in 2004. She was dressed as Vash the Stampeed from Trigun and I had a friend dressed up as Wolfwood so obviously B had to get the two of them together and take pictures. She was young, funny, and just memorable to be around so we talked on the forums and through email and got to know each other better. Next thing ya know she was part of the family, coming up to our house and hanging out, playing video games, watching movies and teaching us new ways to enjoy soft serve ice cream :P
One Christmas our banter on line became a twist on Christmas carols to our favorite anime and video games. Silver Bells became Bullet Hole and later she did a version of Donut Holes in a skit to a different melody. The best twist on a carol was the 12 Days of Christmas which became the 12 days of Anime. We had so much fun creating all these jingles that when I called out to my cosplaying friends to come join me in a Christmas walk Elizabeth was right there in the middle of it. Well two guesses what we sang... in front of the judging panel... yep 12 Days of Anime! It seemed to take all of us FOREVER to finish the song and it was freezing, but we did it and then we all went to Quiznos to eat and warm up. Elizabeth and I were the only ones who were still singing the song by the end of the performance and we could not stop laughing so at Quiznos we were laughing so hard we both were crying over the judges faces.. ( a you had to be there moment if I ever had one) and Elizabeth gave me the biggest hug and said, "Animom, this is the most fun I have had in forever! We should do this again!" We were closer than ever after that and her passing has been really hard. I have tons of stories, but I thought I'd share one with all of you.
As we get closer to FanimeCon I know that some of you will just be finding out about her passing and I encourage you to come to this event. I want show you a tribute to her as a cosplayer and maybe you too will see for just a moment what a wonderful, crazy, fun loving spirit she was. Feel free to share your memories, thoughts, or experiences here also. It isn't just about Elizabeth so if you have suffered a loss and want to share a good memory I say "It's ALL GOOD!"

I intend to be making Cranes whenever I have free time. I still remember how long I cried when I got the phone call about Elizabeth's death. I've been looking forward to and dreading Fanime all at the same time, because I know how strong the memory of her will be this year. Being the Tony to her Loki at the Black and White ball last year and spending most of Fanime with her was the most fun I've ever had at Fanime in the five years I've been attending. (Drunken Tony and Loki Antics abound) Elizabeth really was like a shining light, she always made me smile even when I was upset, and I'm so saddened that I couldn't do the same for her. I'm really glad you're doing something like this for her.

Those of us who knew her and the life she brought to cosplay will be greatly feeling her absence this Fanime. I know how much I miss her still and can totally relate to feeling dread knowing she won't be there physically. She has given me purpose and inspiration for this year. That is why I am running the RE gathering and I am "Celebrating" the cosplayers with the Fanime Theme gathering being turned into the Fanime ALL COSPLAYERS gathering.
Thank you for your post. Though it brought tears to my eyes it has comfort in it too cause I know I am not alone in missing her. I look forward to seeing you there and know that we, Yes there are others too, will be bringing her there in spirit.
If you have a Face book account or some other social media please pass the word along , tag this thread, or what ever it takes to get word out about this. So many of us didn't get the chance back in August/September to say farewell so this is for all of us to remember those we have lost in a good way, as a Tribute to their Life.

I wanted to make sure that everyone knows you don't have to be in cosplay for this. I will be cosplaying this year for this event as Grave from Gungrave in honor of Elizabeth and it is her cosplay, one that was and still is very dear to me.
