I'm wondering because it seems that every anime company does someone to make fans MAD!
The only company that bother me is 4Kids, beacuse they don't release any anime uncut and subbed.Actually they bring out and butcher titles that most forum members here probably don't really care for. For anyone here that likes One Piece, I guess the only option is the original manga ($Kids licensed the anime).
When Nelvana got Cardcaptor Sakura on tv (butchered), atleast Geneon/Pioneer somehow gave us the original series subtitled, that don't bother me.
Even ADV makes fan cringe, espcially when they've been trying to screw over lots of fansubbing groups and licensing anime before it even gets finished airing in Japan (other companies license things fast too, but ADV is like yikes!).
If I watch an anime on dvd and the dub is bad, I'll just switch to subbed, simple as that.
So what do you think?
I can agree with you I bough a lot of anime in a bundle and one was a 4kids that suck just plain out. As for the dub to sub with ADV, yes. I got a DVD and watch it dub and left the sub on and was there a difference.
4Kids is... well, for kids. .^^; So I'm not surprised that they butcher up anime like they do. Some people like it when series are licensed because they can finally get the series they love on DVD with nice quality and all that, but if companies are gonna practically change the entire anime like that, I think it's better that the series not be licensed at all. Fansubs, yo!!
I also hate it when series are licensed while they're still being aired in Japan. Well, what can ya do.
My fave companies are Bandai and Geneon. They usually do good jobs on both the sub and sub formats. It's easy to pick out a bad dub and since I'm a translation checker, I know when subs aren't as accurate as they can be. Because I rarely watch the dubbed version if I can get a hold of the subbed, accurate subtitles are important to me.
-to me it's not the company that drives me mad.
Well...Ok. .Hack made me mad a lot at that company because of the dub.
If they hired better VA's then I wouldn't go mad.

Allow me to play the  devil's advocate here.
Like the company's name, the shows that 4kids license are being screened
FOR KIDS. Honestly, if I was 5-10 years old, I wouldn't give a rat's ass about subs. I would prefer dubs. Why? Because as a kid, I wouldn't be able to read as fast and I'd still be learning vocabulary. And because the show is being marketed to a younger audience, you can't expect parents to purchase PG-13 rated material, that's where video editting comes in. When I was 11-12, a few of my friends' parents wouldn't let us watch PG-13 movies. If anything, they'd have to rely on their weekly allowance and money from parents to make purchases. And even then, the parents always monitored what the kids are spending their money on.
If/When you do become an anime parent, you'll find that you can't enjoy watching subs with your young kids either. Kids want to WATCH cartoons, not read through them. They're more likely to get frustrated if they're reading the subs and unable to watch the real action. Growing up, if I couldn't understand the language, I always turned off the TV.
Speaking on fansub groups...it's a weak arguement.
I don't see how ADVision is screwing over fansubbing groups when 'fansubbing' is technically illegal in the first place. If the Japanese companies really cared enough, they'd go after you too. The anime is owned by Japanese company X, they are entitled to protect their investments. How would you feel if you spent countless hours and $$ in creating an anime show for your business....only to find it online for free the next day? It's the same argument as downloading pirated movies online.
Another point of view (in terms of business) is that companies license the anime very early because they want the supply/demand from the American audience. On series that have finished airing in Japan, by the time they license and release the American DVDs, everyone would've seen the fansubbed versions already and wouldn't feel like buying them anymore.
I don't know about you people, but I honestly respect what most anime companies are doing these days. Commercial translations are becoming increasingly more accurate and what I like to call "fansub-esque." It was a revelation when honorifics appeared in commercial subs and now it's not uncommon. And about titles being licensed quickly and, in many circumstances, before the Japanese run ends, I have no problem with it at all. Rather, I'm kinda glad. Fansubs were traditionally and always should be available only as a vehicle to introduce fans to new series. There were so many things unlicensed just a few years ago, that they served their purpose well. However, the market is so large and relatively popular now, fansubs have essentially outlived their purpose. For all I care, fansubs can just go away. I can always purchase/rent/borrow what I want to watch. Chances are, all the stuff worth watching these days has or will be licensed soon.
Kima, I thought you prefered to watch anime in Japanese anyway. :?
As for the 4Kids thing, you realize they butcher the anime they get to the point of sacrilige (sp?), and I think every anime that gets licensed here in the USA SHOULD get an uncut release on dvd, so fans could watch the series in its original form. If 4Kids still released butchered titles on one dvd for the kids parents to buy, and uncut on another dvd for the fans to buy, they would make more money wouldn't they?
I have to agree with the other people on this: 4Kids is for kids. Duh!
I do have a problem with ADV and their little "pop-up" video subtitles. they get annoying and that sound effect doesn't stop even when you turn the pop-up off. gah! Watching Vol.1 of Magical Shopping District Abenobashi was really annoying and to have the audio reset to English after every episode..gah!
btw, the English cast really overdid the southern drawl accents IMHO. I know they are trying to give an equivalent to Osaka-ben, but its just too much. I wish the English Voice Director at ADV was a bit more subtle.

No, it doesn't.
True fans rejoice rather than cringe when a title gets licensed, and the earlier the better. Not only are American companies licensing titles faster these days, they're helping fund new anime in Japan before it's even produced. In general, I get the impression that the American companies are trying very hard to bring fans what we want, and I salute them for it. My favorite is still Right Stuf for their excellent job on the subtitling of His and Her Circumstances. I think they really pushed the industry on that one. ADV is also impressive with their attempts at all sorts of technical tricks on DVDs to try to get fans the information we want. Both companies seem to really listen to the fans and care what we think. Funimation seems to listen a lot to fan input as well, and I'm sure most of the others too.
However, I don't blame Bay Area fans for being bitter at industry this year. Part of the advantage of having industry panels at anime cons is that we get the chance to give input into the anime being brought over -- when industry gave panels at Fanime 2003, I felt that they cared. It's such a shame that industry made such a poor showing in 2004 -- they don't get the chance to show off the efforts they're going through for us, and we don't get the chance to give input if they don't show. So, yes, I agree we have a right to be bitter that they chose PMX instead. I hope they don't make that same mistake again.
(BTW, I don't bother listening to dubs, so I have no opinons on dubs.)
ADV killed Boxtorrents a few days back. When anime companies start acting like the RIAA/MPAA, you know something's wrong with the world.
I don't see a problem with a company protecting its intellectual properties. It actually be a necessity today, as it's so hard to stop distribution over the internet. Traditional VHS fansubs were easy to control; the groups just kinda didn't distribute anymore. I'm disgusted at the proliference of distributed licensed material, so I say all the better.
I wanted to wish Bandai the best of luck in court. GO BANDAI! http://www.animeondvd.com/news/pr.php?pr_view=376

The world already went wrong when so-called fans felt they had a right to so publically propagate R1 rips on such a large scale, forcing the licensing companies to develop a process of enforcement.

What makes it hard for ADV is that I don't think ADV actually has any intellectual property. ADV simply owns a lot of licenses and has purchased a lot of rights. I'm not even sure if ADV's dubs really belong to them.
When US companies that are involved with anime pretty much leave the fansub community alone (becuse they use them as an inexpensive marking arm) then I guess I really am not surprised. Although these companies have been asleep for many years in enforcing their US copyrights over their anime titles, much to the chagrin of dealers who sell import titles in their stores and on ebay.
