Title: Whats so great about Fruit Baskets?
Post by: red on November 01, 2004, 09:48:07 PM
I watched 7 or 8 episodes. It wasnt particularly funny, or exciting to watch... tell me, does it get better or just forget about it?

Granted I have a sense of humor, theres just a lot of better shows out there!

So really whats so great about Fruit Baskets?

i think furuba has more light humor, and i think it's great appeal, is because it shows how many different types of personalities/people co-existing and how they get along, and how they dont. Theres a lot of connections people can make from fruits basket and personal experiences they've had here in reality with other people.

I've also heard a lot of people relate to characters in the series, particularly one charcter is very compatible w/ them in the series that they relate to greatly.

but hey not every anime out there is for everyone ^^; personally fruits basket was and is one of my all time faves. and my fave part of the series is towards the end, but thats my opinion.

To be serious and honest, it wasnt appealing to me at all. Too sensitive and mushy, and some of the plot made no sense to me. Maybe if I'd seen it a few years ago... nah, I wouldnt have understood it.

Wait, maybe that would have been better... XD

FB has its moments.  Although I find the basic premise very Japanese:  The all -suffering female -abit over the top.  Seriously, the climax by having all the guys helpless to assist by passively wringing their hands is just pathetic.

Question: What type of anime genres do you enjoy?

This really depends on what type of genres you're into. Some people prefer sci-fi, fantasy, comedy, and/or shoujo based storylines. If you are a person who really digs shoujo genres, then yes. I would recommend Fruits Baskets and Full Moon Sagashite among others. I liked FB because I think it has a cute storyline and I love the initial concept of the plot: the characters are cursed and change into animals of the zodiac. However, I was a bit disappointed towards the end of the series because the studio had to do a bum-rush. The manga is still currently released in Japan, so don't take the anime ending too seriously...like I said, the ending was rushed.

Personally when I give recommendations, I break down the genres and try to figure out what the person likes before suggesting titles. (i.e. slapstick comedy VS. black comedy) - black: as in "dark humor"

A person who generally enjoys action oriented titles would think Boys Be as too boring and mushy for their tastebuds.

That is always the risk when you have a successful manga that gets an OAV or TV spin off.  There will be compromises in the script.  Certainly FB doesn't suffer the problems that haunt PSME (Please Save My Earth) ack!!!! .  I will say that Video Girl Ai might be the best example of a successful convertion from manga to anime.  The Anime studio just did the first storyline of the manga and nothing more.  It had a great ending and didn't confuse the non-manga audience. it probably drew in those people to read the manga.

despite this gripe about manga to anime transfer and how sometimes this "butchers" really good anime series...

I for one, just simply thought anime or manga version of FB was good.

heck anything about the chinese zodiac and ppl turning into animals is always a cute/ funny thing...

heck my first anime series is about a guy changing into a girl...

how much more weird/ taboo can ya get ? well... on second thought dont answer that... thats a totally different chat string

ShyGuy:

Um...anime IS a cartoon.

What's your definition of "cartoon" that makes it seem bad? :?

I really like any genre. I've seen lots of stuff from Berserk to Love Hina to Hack//sign to Evangelion to Ranma and to Please Teacher. I could see how Fruits Baskets could be appealing to some people... and granted, its not like Fruits Baskets isnt "my style of anime"...  for some reason I thought it was really lacking something.

Whatever. Maybe I'll look into the manga.
Thanks for the comments!

I saw Fruits Basket for the first time when I went to the Fanimecon 2 years ago. I cried seriously. Not of painful hours of watching it but because of the ending. I suppose because of that experience I started to like the genre of Fruits Basket. For me Fruits Basket is the first real anime I've seen. So... I like it because of that. But now I've seen it what... 300 times? I think I can even copy their voices... best I look for another anime now.
However I must say Fruits Basket is worth a try to those who haven't seen it.

Random question: I see few "harem" formulae with the female in the center. FB fits the harem description -- except that instead of a passive male all the females fall for, the female is an active problem solver.

True, or are there harem formulae where the centerpiece female acts differntly from FB?

Kyou. *_*

-ahem- Why's Fruits Basket good? I love it because of the balance of things. Things don't seem to get overly serious or sad without a funny pun in there. I believe there's great quality in character development and plot, aswell..but that's more clearly seen in the manga than the anime of Furuba.

I definately recommend it to anyone who cares for things other than pure action.

I love Fruits Basket. I've only seen about 17 episodes of it so far...>>; But so far, I really enjoy it. ^_^ I think most guys would think it's too mushy though. Not really much I can say, as everyone else who had a positive comment about the series already took what it was I would've said. ^_^

I *heart* Kyo. XD

I liked it from the first episode. There's a huge array of fun characters. It's humorous and playful. It may be more for the chicks cause of the mushiness and cute fuzzy animals, but hey, I think it's awesome anyway. The again, maybe it's just my kinda anime!

:D I think having Shigure's and Kyou's personalities in there make it for boys too it's a good well-rounded anime since they've got stuff for girls and guys, I personally fell in love with it since i see a lot of the characters in myself especially Kisa   thus thats one of my cosplays this year along with Hatsu-Haru XD I just read Vol. 8 of the manga and was shocked by Saki's past and Kyou's dad   it can get pretty intense and I think that's one of the things that separates anime and manga from most American cartoons >.> That and when they are gonna say or do something perverted they do it, not hide it in the movie like Disney did with the priest in the Little Mermaid, nasty >.<

Furuba isn't necessarily bad nor good, it just depends on how you look at it.

i mean, if you are known for your short patience span with shoujo animes, it is definentely not something for you.  i haven't watched it yet, but two of my friends have cried at the ending.  so it's got to be somewhat good, right?

personally, i enjoy animes like Cowboy Bebop and Bleach.  however, i happen to love Full Moon wo Sageshite.

i guess it just depends on whether it appeals to you or not.  as usual, i find the manga version of Fruits Basket much better.  read it if you can!

Note that none of the anime you listed are shoujo.  Fruits Basket is shoujo.  It may be that you don't like shoujo.  Love Hina and Onegai Teacher are very much shounen.

You mentioned Boys Be.  I am now forced to say Boys Be TOTALLY ROCKS!!   Thank you.

I call them "hive" anime, and I agree.  In both harem and hive that I've seen, the females seem to be in control or to develop control somehow.  Pretear.  Fushigi Yuugi.  Angelique.  Harukanaru.  In harem, the central boy doesn't seem to develop or mature much at all.  Hive girls seem generally younger than harem boys.  Hives tend to be more about girls growing up, while harems seem to be more about boys staying mostly the same but still living out their fantasies.  Of course, this is just a very, very vague, general impression.  I can probably find counterexamples.

My wife loves it.  I bought her the box set for Christmas.  Why does she like it?  She says it is because it is relaxing, has interesting characters and shows a very optimistic main character doing well and showing love to others.  And she loves the romance with the cat guy.  The plot also continues to develop each episode rather than remaining somewhat stale and formulaic.

I think its okay, but it isn't something I'd watch again.

Seriously. It's all about Kyo.

But yeah, the anime does kinda mix around a few things, and the ending isn't really the ending. I love the interactions between characters--especially between Yuki/Kyo, Yuki/Tohru, Kyo/Tohru, and Yuki/Kyo/Tohru. I swear, the only times Kyo-kun really smiles is when he's talking to our sweet Tohru-chan.

The development of each character doesn't end after a certain point, either, which is great! Plus there's all the random funny bits and serious bits and the like. Me and a couple of my girl friends had a Girls' Night In once and we watched all four dvds as a marathon. When we got to the part about Ayame being class president, Sara actually fell off the couch laughing at what is now known as 'The Ayame Bounce'. (When he's in that purple leopard-print coat!)

Everybody raise your hand if you think Kyo's dad is a psycho who needs serious help or a good whacking.

I would say its appeal, with me, was more so the development of the characters. I mean, when you start it off you have this girl who (in my case) i had this enormous amount of apathy for. she lost her mother, she is picked on at school, but she still manages to wake up everyday with a smile.

there were *moments* in the series that made it worth watching in its entirety, just so you could pick up on the moral messages and subtle moments that jerked on your heart string.

And the situation between Hatori and his fiance? ugh...dont get me started T_T sadness....

On the subject of best-chara-ever, Momiji > everyone else. And for the record, Yuki > Ayame, because Yuki is *that* cool.

And speaking of Yuki, the Prince Yuki Fanclub is hilarious. But anyway...

Ahem. FruBa is a series that indeed appeals to many - but not every - taste. It's an incredibly laid-back series that I like, maybe because there's something about the characters that makes them...real, even though they do have their quirky surreal moments.

Oh, and Tohru is voiced by Yui Horie, who in turn is absolute love.

I'm a hardcore fan when it comes to shoujo genre manga/anime so Fruits Basket really appealed to me. I love the anime for its storyline plot. It caught my appeal as well as the pasts and presents of all/most of the characters. I felt I could relate to it all so I thought it was a really interesting watch/read.

I dunno why... it just appeals to me emotionally.

I like how it has a nice mix between humorous and teary scenes throughout the series.

I'm actually a lot more into the manga though. I dunno, I thought the ending was a little disappointing, even without reading the manga.

P.S. Kyo pwns all!!!!!!!!!!!! I <3 the year of the cat^^.
