Title: Magic : TG recap and plans for the future!
Post by: Soygirl on May 30, 2005, 04:57:28 PM
An unprecedented number of people showed up to play Magic. We played a lot of casual constructed, which was fun! Far too many for a draft (18+) showed up, and as my 8th edition box had gone missing, we only had 31 packs of Betrayers. Seeing as an all betrayers draft would turn a lot of people away (not to mention it's not too fun to draft) we decided to run three consecutive games of 6 way Assassin for prizes. I had fun at my table but I know a lot of people who rather have drafted. Did you enjoy it if you played?

So for next year:
- Multiple drafts to accomodate the masses that wanted to play this year.
- Sign up sheets with NO bias (I had too many people going "Hey, can you put my name down? Hey, me too?) so nobody thinks I'm choosing favorites.
- I'm also gonna try to get ahold of Magic related prizes so that we can have draft prizes and so I can award prizes to larger pick-up games.

What else? What're your comments about this year? I know it didn't go anywhere near as smoothly as we'd hoped, and we had to do what we could with what we had. Next year, hopefully, the circumstances will be different.

Thanks for showing up to play, guys :) Next year I'll bring something besides my elfies ;)

Hey, I played magic with you I think a few times with my friend Kyle lol.  You and I played against him and another guy in a 2v2 and whooped serious butt :).

I'll try to get Kyle on here to post some ideas for next con.  I think he intends on going next year with me, and since he's the guy who wanted to play magic a lot in our group :)...

Anywho, hopefully things go a lot smoother next con :)

I just want to thank SoyGirl for running the Magic events -- including spending $80 of her own money in buying a box of Magic cards (and a few other things as well....). The Santa Cruz WotC Delegate saved the day (including bringing along The House on the Hill and Zombies) with his support as well. Logistically, Magic is one of the more difficult games to run at a con, and I'm glad SoyGirl is part of the gaming staff.

Will it be draft only, or will there be casually constructed play as well?

I'm building a Rakdos aggro/control/manipulation right now, should be done by Fanime. Anyone up for a type-2 draft?

I know how to play but I don't have a deck of my own. I'm guessing there will be some spare decks on hand?

That would be great. ^_^

Zekke: A 'draft' or 'limited' tournament is one where players pay a fee (about $15-$20 ish) and receive a sealed tournament pack (75 random cards from the set), a certain number of boosters (i believe 3 or so), and unlimited basic lands. They get a set amount of time to create their deck from just what they have and play with it.

EDIT
Also I'm up for not only a draft but Type-2 multi-ways =D

That assassin game was fun stuff. Everyone had better watch out cuz I'm bringing my wheel deck, I imagine its creation is response to last year when somebody milled me to death, which was totally uncalled for :)... see you guys again this year.

Assassin Games, Wheel decks, drafts... man I've been out of the loop for longer than I thought. Oh well, I'll bring my Goblin Flame, White Flyer and Flesh Eater decks. Old decks but they'll do. :)

what he just described was a sealed where you get 3 packs and a tournement pack and build a deck from the cards you get in them. and yes you can use any number of basic lands

actualy a draft is when 8 players get 3 packs each and then they sit at a table and they have 4 players on each side, in a random order choosen before they sat down, then each person opens the same pack at the same time and chooses 1 card from it, they then pass the pack they had to the left and waits for the person next to them,or across from them if they dont have a person right of them, to pass them the pack they just chose from and you choose from it, you repeat this process till all the cards in the first pack(every one opens 1 pack they have). the after the first pack is done with they open a second pack and then they pass the pack to the right this time and do the same thing they did the first time. after everyone has opened and passed and picked from all the 2nd packs they then go to the third pack and pass to the left again.

in drafts the minimum number of cards in a deck is 40 cards. all the cards you have extra after building the deck with the cards you chose from the packs is then your side board. there is no limit to how many of one card you can have in a draft. IE. you can have like 5 of any one card as long as you chose it from that draft like 5 black lotuses. as long as you chose the cards in the pack from thatd raft there is no limit to the number of that card. the 4 card limit is not taken into effect in drafting or sealed

a draft usualy costs $9-$10
a sealed is usualy $18-$20

they may be alot of players who play the format called type 2 where the two most recent sets plus any core sets, editions, the two newest blocks, consists of 3 sets, in magic is Champions of Kamigawa and Ravnica

What he means is most newer players don't know about playing type 1 with all the old stuff like Ice Age, and so on.[/color][/i]

I understood them both.

I play t2, simply because the cards I have are from the new sets since older cards tend to be harder to get/exspensive.

I get alot of grief from my friends who dont like playing against 'new cards' since they feel they are 'too powerful'.

Whoot I'm pumped, as long as the draft doesn't coincide with anything else O_O

Oh wait, swap meet >< I'll try and float in between the two if both are still at their same locations from last year. Are they?

I had planned not to waste anime time playing M:tG, but if there's a draft, I'll drop in. I'll also probably get whooped being as I'm only passingly familiar with Ravnica (well, I did play two drafts one night about 4 or 5 months ago) and as for the other two sets in the block, I'm completely lost, but I'll give it a shot.

And, old cards are awesome but I'm not about to buy any. Got waaaaaaay too many things to spend money on at the con already. ;)

this draft might go easier for me then expected, i know all the good cards for drafting and i know all the money cards out there, and the rulings for the cards help out too seeing as combo tends to be the game winner in draft most cases, if the right cards are pulled, i played a draft deck that had izzet guildmage and glimpse of the unthinkable, fi you dont know what it is think of me discarding ur deck and you try to draw but you lose, yay!!, some of the poepl here might draft but they dont know what so it should be ezier for those who know the set

lmao. I wanna rare draft.

Anyways, I only have one t2 uncompleted deck w/ no rares, and the rest is just casual gaming. I hope everyone brings their binder-o-rares/good commons/uncommons because I'd be more than happy to trade/buy.

<_<

>_>

I don't raredraft unless I have no idea what to pick.

In other words... if we're talking about guildpact whatever and dissention? That guy picking up all the rares might be me.

I hope there's another draft next year with the Timeshift block =D

Anybody know a local FNM draft? I'm in the Hayward area.

so how about '07? I guess I'll plan on bringing T1 and T2 decks, and work on 'em, T2 should be Ravnica block, Time Spiral block, and Coldsnap...

I dunno about that, but my friends and I make every friday the day we make a trip to Berkely for the FNM drafts. It's great fun.

Yo. I'm down for drafting. I'm not much for constructed, but I'll probably have a T2 deck made up by then for regionals.

I'm a casual player right now, but I'm fairly confident in my drafting. I might also get more competitive by fanime, so we'll see.

Either way, I'm down for playing some magic.

And is there gonna be only one draft? With the sets that were mentioned? I would really like to have a Timespiral draft. I very much enjoy Timespiral with drafting. or maybe we could just have 8 people bring four booster packs and then we can draft from there?

Is/are the draft(s) completely set up yet?

And deepbluevibes... I would be interested to see what you have for Ice Age.

Is the Berkeley draft at Eudemonia?

I don't like Vintage/Legacy I feel that it's overpowered and not fun at all playing against someone who just goes "OK I drop all these expensive/rare cards and go infinite on turn 1. I win, thanks, bye, gonna go play someone else now". Same goes for Extended. The real game is in Standard, and I find it annoying when almost NOBODY plays T2 at Fanime. Whenever I asked someone to play this and last year, they would ask me what format and I'd say "T2" and they'd just frown and be like "Oh I can't afford T2 it's too expensive to keep up" and so I just go "Well just play whatever deck you want" and they start dropping P9 and crap  Yeah T2 is too expensive for you since you wasted your money on Power 9...

Yes it is at Eudemonia :D I go there every friday.

It would be cool to see ya there!

And I pretty much feel the same way you do about the vintage stuff. Expecially since I'm not really down for paying big bucks for one card. That and I just recently started playing magic again.

I just really loved Ice Age. I used to buy a booster pack every time I went and bought some new cards back in middle school. Back then, Ice Age was still $7 a pack. Crazy stuff.

So maybe we could hold a draft for just time spiral? or the newer set at the time?

Like two or three of my friends and I repack our Time Spiral stuff and redraft everything like twice a week for fun. I'll see if I can get people to goto Eudemonia on Friday, but we're going tomorrow to just pick up singles and stuff. There's a T2 Constructed tournament @ Great Mall in Milpitas this (and every) Saturday. The tournaments are either free or you pay to get in (depends on whether or not they're doing a "Next Set Promo" tourney yet). There's prizes and such (Store credit, 1st place gets a Planar Chaos booster box preorder if they're doing the promo). It also depends on whether or not people attend. Hopefully people come this Saturday. I'm just going tomorrow to pick up some extra stuff to finish up a Martyr-Tron deck since I'm tired of my current W/U/B control deck.
