Once I was very hungry at around lunch time so I got out the bacon and set the pan to sizzle with olive oil. I set the bacon in and the oil splashed on me. Ouch burned!

You want a story of bacon and here it is: ^_^

SCENE: Burningman 2004 sunday burn of the temple and the last night of burningman for most people. Behind the center camp cafe where so cheesy and weird techno music was playing and I was just cooling down from my last night on the playa (BM is in the desert).
       Anyways I would say itsclose to midnight, but time on the playa is really not important. It was dark and people were celebrating the last night near my camp sight. Someone had brought out a propane stove and was cooking bacon and frying crackers in bacon grease Yum! Bacon tends to be a staple of burning man, because well its good and its great protien if your camping out for a week in the desert.
    So I join in and have some bacon and crackers. Then someone busts out some dark chocolate and shaves it and sprinkles it on the bacon. It was amazingly delicious, especially wrapped around a cracker coated in bacon grease. At one point I sneek back to camp and come back with some tortilla's and cheese. So we make some quesadillas and also fry up just cheese in bacon grease and somehow the chocolate got in there. Everyone had a fabulous time. though ran out of bacon and cheese and I ended up near a burn barrell in my wheelchair and passed out while smoking. Thankfully I burnt a hole in my shirt and not myself hehe.

I have a question.  Bacon comes from pigs right?  Well then what exactly is turkey bacon?  Some kind of turkey/pig animal such...now what is very scary...the most horrible thing I've seen is, vegitarian bacon.  Im like NOOO!!!!!!, bacon cant be vegitarian is suppose to be fattening and greasy and such.

I haven't bothered to look up vegetarian bacon (this is the first time I heard of it) but I wouldn't be surprised if it consists of stuff like vegetable oil (there goes your grease) like Crisco and a mixture of fatty fruits and veggies, like avocado.

Heh I miss the old days of hanging out at one of my friends houses a few years back because all she would ever really eat for breakfast everyday was bacon and the few times I spent the night at her house...
I knew I was eating bacon at midnight or the next morning for sure xD.

Bacon must:
1. Be lean.
2. Properly cured.
3. Cooked till slightly crisp.
4. And never server after spending time under a heat lamp!  :x

About a year ago, a buddy and I were in a Best Buys, looking thru new DVD's.  At the end of one aisle, there were some of those mylar gift wrapping sleeves for DVD's with different designs on them.  One particular design was of a waving American flag that took up the entire side.  the colours were kind of off, and the stripes were squiggly, so the flag looked like bacon.  We got a good laugh at the Bacon gift wrap. :lol:  Wish I'd bought some now...

I'm not quite sure what to think yet.  On one hand, not a whole great animal was killed specifically for the meat, but on the other the starter cells had to come from somewhere.

Is that thing safe for meat?  Sounds like it won't reach high enough temps to kill bacteria if it's gonna take that long to cook.

I dunno... if the animal they got the starter cells from is still alive and well or something, then I'd say it's free meat for the meatless. If they had to, like, kill it in its infancy (or, if I really must, abort it...), then it's probably the same cruelty-filled meat that we meat eaters know so little about.

(BTW, I've heard that a good chunk of organic meats and like products are commonly cruelty-free. If that's one of the things keepin' you off of meat, this could be significant.)

make of this what you will, but i dont really think the way an animal dies really matters if it's going to be eaten. and i'm speaking from experience. i've seen firsthand a pig being slit at the throat, skewered on a bamboo pole, and roasted. i felt little to no physical/emotional/spiritual discomfort throughout. it's the way things work in nature. humans are naturally at the top of the foodchain, and if other animals beneath us in that chain do the same things we do, why are humans the only ones being prosecuted for it?

bottom line, i eat meat. i know the methods used to acquire it, and i'm just fine with it. again, make of that what you will

(i know this is off-topic, but...i dunno. i had to put this somewhere. im starting to think i put this in the wrong place)

I think bacon is meh cuz for the past 10 months I worked at a resturuant I had to cook the damned things. And..well...there's things you shouldn't see in bacon....being a prep cook ruined a lot of things for me. T-T

My (soon to be former) boss once ate an entire sheet pan and a half of bacon that was supposed to be for canapes. He even dipped it, in handfuls, back into all the fat drippings at the bottom of the pans.

Yeah, we call him The Pig. In a few languages.

I got this cooking device last week at Wal-Mart. With it, you hang strips of bacon above a little pan and cook it in the microwave and the fat and grease is dripped down into the pan, making for a more healthier and tasty version of bacon. It does really great work.
