AWESOME! SWEET! YAY!
I heard about this earlier over at Haelepes gemot and forwarded the news over to Tsubasa. Didn't know if this deserved its own thread or not, though. ^_^
Anyhow, Ayu looks cuter than ever, Nayuki is hawt, Mai looks like Kanna, Shiori hasn't changed much with her new look and last but not least Makoto looks freaking devious. Like, death by purikura devious.
As for Clannad, I haven't played it (nor have I played Tomoyo After) yet, so I anxiously await the announcement of a planetarian OVA. WE NEED ANIMATED VOICED YUMEMI NOW.
As Spirit said, he relayed the info my way cause I've been out all day. Obviously this is a very "banzai" moment for me.
Nayuki and Makoto. <3
Quote from: ChunKanon is being REMADE! Same studio, same actors, and a couple of animator changes.
Same studio? I'm pretty sure this is Kyoto Animation, not Toei. Toei is doing the CLANNAD movie though. For point of referrence, Toei did the first Kanon TV series and the AIR movie. Kyoto Animation did the AIR TV series.

Having replayed the game a couple days ago, I say it's gonna take a bit much out of the story to be able to see the Junker. The narrative relies so much on the assumption that the player assumes the role, whether willingly or not. But I guess that's always the fate of these types of adaptations.
As an aside, the game doesn't get any less tear-jerkery on successive play. ; ;
I'm so looking forward to this. I loved Kanon. <3
I'll check out Clannad as well. ^.^
Obviously, a new "Kanon" anime is a good thing. The Touei one showed what? Only a fifth of the game or so? Kyoto Animation should have got Hiroko-san back! Not that her replacement's horrible, but I miss Hiroko-san.
Of course a new "Kanon" means one thing. Moa~ Yukarin-san rabu! Rabu, rabu! XD
Oh. "Clannad" anime movie's a good thing. Wai~!

Ah, that's what I meant. The same studio that did AIR does this one. Guess it was misconstrued with everything else.
I've been playing through Kanon using a text hooker, but the process is slow and tedious.

And I've been playing Kanon using Haeleth's patch -- but after the Japanese kicks in, I rely on the voices to guide me. (I got Ayu's and Mai's ending this way. Still have to get the other three, though -- four if you count Sayurin.)
Kanon needed a remake? Ah well, I could always use more Key/Visual Arts. And I didn't play any of the games, so what do I know. ^^;
Ooh, Clannad. Heard of it, but didn't get around to reading the manga. And I'm not much of an h-game person [or game person in general >.>; yeah, that's a first, right?].
I'll be looking foward to these~!
Clannad was clean, by the way. It was just Kanon that had an h and non h version.

That preview brings back such memories. It's probably gonna make me cry once again, but I look forward to the conclusion of Makoto's story. I see she's wearing the veil and everything. ; ;
The preview makes me want to watch it more. >.< It looks like its going to be awesome. Such nice animation. Yay! <(^.^)> An the effects look great, too. XD
The way they animate it, along with the way they color it, make this seem as though this adaptation will be much more stronger than the last.
Let's wait and see. (Personally...I can't.)
Sorry for double-posting, but this had to be said: 24 episodes. (http://upload.fam.cx/cgi-bin/img-box/3w060328163746.jpg)
That news definately warrants the double post and bolded/alternate-colored status.
The story in Kanon isn't so linear, such as AIR's. As such, it'd be hard to get everything in if they didn't extend the series past 13 episodes. As it stood, AIR lacked all that it should have showed in its original TV broadcast, but I think that was more or less rectified by the following Summer specials. Some more episodes to slow the pacing a bit and allow for more time for everything to sink in would have been nice though. With 24 episodes, the Kanon remake likely won't suffer the extremely tight pacing seen in AIR.
Finally Nayuki's story will get fleshed out in animated form. XD

I guess I'm not the first to be shocked that... YUUICHI LOOKS LIKE A MAN!! O__x;
Maybe it's just me, but...why exactly are they remaking Kanon? Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but I'm kinda puzzled as to why they're remaking it. Is it because they thought that they screwed up something the first time around? Did they mess up/omit parts of the story, or is it because this is to please the fans?
Yes, they did omit parts of story....
Its probably mostly to please fans though... I really don't know... >.>

The first Kanon series only really covered, say, 2/5 of the story. Ayu's story is the only one that could arguably be considered adequate. Even Mai's story, which was also quite long, was lacking. Shiori and Makoto were essentially regulated to a single episode and Nayuki was given no love.
Because Kyoto Animation did such an amazing job on the AIR anime, I'm sure Key is also doing this, in part, as something of a service to fans of the game.
Personally, I think the new OP sequence, as seen on Kanon Prelude, is already a service for fans. <3

I'm sure subs will be out in, like, a day. I anticipate. =3
****************WARNING****************
**************n00b question***************
What's Kanon? I know it's an anime, what's it about? A minor intro appreciated! ^^;;
Let me get a very brief primer out there then:
Aizawa Yuuichi, a second-year high school student, moves back to a town he had once left as a child seven years ago. But for some reason, he doesn't remember very much about the time he had once spent there. He remembers his aunt and cousin, with whom he will be living with again, but aside from that, little else. In this winter town, he encounters new and "new" people and along with them, their circumstances and mysteries.
Based on an AVG by Key. In grand Key fashion, the stories told are beautiful, enigmatic, and often sad/tragic. If you've ever watched AIR, then you know what I mean.
Personally, I can already say that this is likely my series of the season. Little else can even compete.
I downloaded the raw and I will watch it soon. 1st impressions to come real soon.
I wonder who's going to sub this?
Watching the RAW now.
When the subs come out, you'll see just how close it is to the actual game. Thus, more Keygasm value.
Here's an example, using the opening train station scene:
Original anime: Yuuichi ignores Nayuki's first plea for name rememberance - and gets it right first try.
Kanon 2006: Yuuichi goes through two incorrect names and a feigning of ignorance before getting her name right.
Another example would be Yuuichi's first day:
Original anime: Yuuichi goes out, Nayuki tells him that she has practice, and runs like hell.
Kanon 2006: Yuuichi gets berated for not saying good morning, then launches into the whole thing about practice stuff.
But the most important difference?
Game: Between days, on certain paths, a girl (hurrrrrr spoilers) would talk about a never-ending dream, and the details of said dream.
Original anime: Doesn't exist.
Kanon 2006: It exists - with beautiful visuals to boot.
For those who have played the game, grab the raw -- it's not too different than in-game. For those who haven't, wait for subs and be amazed.
Seriously.
I love you, Kyoto Animation.
ps. I, too, cannot shake off the 'Yuuichi is Kyon' vibe - especially while Kyon-ichi is narrating.
note There's noticeably more fanservice than its older counterpart...
note II: Did I mention they use the game soundtrack for this, as they did with AIR? In addition, however, they also have some remixed tracks, too.
note III: Can you tell I'm insanely obsessive about this? XDDDD
note IV: Kitagawa gets no love. XDDDD
note V: They show most if not every single main character within the episode. Some are more in the background than others -- e.g. Shiori. Piro even gets an appearance!
note VI: Sleepy Nayuki = win
note VII: Ayu's crashlanding sequence = more win
note VIII: Ayu's wing-chasing sequence = made up of absolute win
note IX:
Original Anime: Keroro-chan clock
Kanon 2006: Cat-on-house clock
Final Thoughts: Pretty damn good intro to the series. The pacing's accelerated into a quick brisk, but the timing isn't as compressed as AIR was, due to the longer run. Foreshadowing
Once subs come out, I'll be downloading them as well and showing them to everyone I know...including showing it at the Fanimaid Café meeting this weekend. Seriously. It's that good.
By your post, Spirit, I can tell that you are obsessive about this anime. And what game are we talking about here? And no Tsubasa, I haven't watched AIR. I plan to finish watching Fate Stay Night and hopefully Cowboy Bebop will be done downloading by then.
Kanon is based off of a visual novel (the hereafter referred to 'game') of the same name.
Originally, it was intended for mature audiences (random gratuitous scenes with the heroines were included), but later on, an 'all-ages' version was announced and released.
oh, and sig updated <3
So... it seems my torrents run at 500 kb/s here...

Download completed. Watching soon.
EDIT: Watched. Impressions:
The animation is very nice, as expected of Kyoto. Music is very Key style, which is a good thing.
So far, I feel like the characters are really generic, gao~! Oops, wrong anime - "Uguu~!" Except for Kaori and Kitagawa. I like them. Hopefully after a few more episodes I'll know them a little better. Also, this whole, "I used to live here but I've forgotten all the important friends / love interests I met here" plot setup is not really grabbing ahold of my fancy. I also have high hopes for that. Oh, and I'm assuming that the conversation about the hospital is foreshadowing.
EDIT 2: Ohnose. [a.f.k.] put out their own version of episode 1. I'm torn!
Downloading the [afk] version right now. Should be done when I wake up next day. XD
Quote from: mDuo13Ohnose. [a.f.k.] put out their own version of episode 1. I'm torn!
My plan is to download every version of episode 1 that gets released within a reasonable timeframe (probably within 3 days), and see whose is the best and stick with them.
It's the same strategy I adapted for AIR.
it's fairly good, and I'm hoping that it's going to be better than Air. I know many of you guys love this show and unfortunately I'm totally new to it. I'll see how this goes.
My impressions
1. as mduo already stated, its kinda generic, and a lot of similarities with air stood out.
2. Lots of subtle moe factors lol.
3. It's freakin kyon, amirite?
Either way, I'll probably watch this series till the end. Lots of series ended up blowing my mind at the half end, and exceeded my expections in the past.
J
Quote from: LastElixir3. It's freakin kyon, amirite?
It sounds a
lot like him, but I looked up the voice actor and it didn't seem to be the same. Could it have been ANN's error, or is it just a generic voice?
It is indeed Kyon. Both Kyon and Yuuichi are played by Tomokazu Sugita.
edit Speaking of which, did anyone happen to catch the reference to AIR in this episode? ;)

Quote from: -zoxan-So, I hear a lot of "AIR" in this thread. Now what is AIR? Forgive my n00bineZZ.
AIR is Key's second game(Kanon being the first). It had a respectable TV anime adaptation (http://animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2480) in Winter 2005.
They both are similar in terms of art style and narrative style. Comparisons are inevitable.

'specially since both are Kyoto Animation too.
I watched it, the Static-Subs-Eclipse version and I must say that I was impressed with the quality of animation and Kyon suddenly becoming Yuuichi. I dunno, like Jay said, I won't be able to take him seriously for now, but I'll watch it and see how he grows into the role. I just hope it doesn't get too deppressing like AIR though.

Kyonichi's pretty awesome; he's not fully made of barbs, sarcasm, and a disdain for the world. In that sense, Yuuichi's sorta like a toned-down Kyon.

Sprocket Hole Subs and The Wafflehouse have released their version of the subs. The high quality version's video size is Xbox hueg. XD
The way they subbed it puts them comparable to a.f.k. in quality - they used Verdana/Tahoma for the subs -- which isn't very Kanon-like at all in appearance, but makes it perfect for reading on anything other than a computer monitor; their signsubs are above a.f.k.'s (in the way that they miss some signs - Peach Train FTW! - but the signs they do get have appropriate fonts and translations), but they failed at translating the background talk with Shiori and her mom, which is pretty important foreshadowing, I'd say. Oh, and they have OP and ED karaoke, which a.f.k. lacks.
The single thing that puts them behind a.f.k. is their lack of punctuality.
Static-Subs and Eclipse retain their title as reigning champions for the series. :3
edit Oh, and as an addendum: Sprocket/TWH subs 'uguu'. a.f.k. doesn't. :(

Yuuichi even recites the infamous Kyon yare yare.

I like how they slip in a lot of random stuff for you to find. In the Prelude, there's a Lia convenience shop; in the earlier anime's thirteenth episode, Kitagawa was wearing a Clannad shirt. I'm sure there's a lot more that I need to cover.

That's the thing. Combined with the fact that that scene could've been cut out of the episode with little to no difficulty makes me think lololol now that's subliminal advertising.
That, and the lack of references everywhere else. :o
It's ALL about Akiko, amirite?

I haven't watched the third episode yet, but I'm liking this so far.
Ayu is the best.
Episode 5 RAW's released. Mai gets some serious love, but my sig/ava set will be Yuuichi this week. This is because his discovery of Ayu at the Minase dining room during breakfast is accompanied by awesome animation that just looks hilarious.
Wait for it. I'll be releasing the set at about 10:30ish.
p.s. Tsubasa, download it. It has Makoto. Lots and lots of Makoto. That, and remember the scene where she finds out what nikuman and manga are? It's been animated perfectly. :DDDD

Enjoy. If any of you guys want me to rip any line from the game, I can do that. :3
Finally got some time to catch up. >.<
Shiori, Ayu, Makoto... <3
<3 I love the way everythings introduced in this series much much more. It already has so much more depth. I can't wait till they show more stuff I haven't seen before. <3 Especially since everything isn't rushed. Mai's and Makoto's events have much better pace.
Ep. 5 w/ ayu is awesome. The breakfast scene. X3 I love how his reaction and how she just blindly agrees to his suggestion.

Albeit a little late for this message, but here goes:
Quote from: SpiritsnareSprocket Hole Subs and The Wafflehouse have released their version of the subs.
[...]
The single thing that puts them behind a.f.k. is their lack of punctuality.
A couple of things to bear in mind:
1. Sprocket Hole is a new group, so you have to give them a chance to deal with the pitfalls of starting a new group, including perfecting techniques for getting things going.
2. This was ep 1, so give them a little slack on that front. Subsequent episodes will get faster once a groove's been settled.
Anyway, just thought I'd interject that. Not to mention, the "Uguu~" factor is important to them.
--Ian R. "IJ" Justman, founder, Fresno Anime; video room chair, Ani-Jam; and founder, Sprocket Hole.
As for the other thoughts expressed on the original message:
1. I didn't want fancy subs. The idea is for people to enjoy the show. And yes, displays other than a computer monitor was precisely what we had in mind.
2. I'll take responsibility for not getting a sub in there for the light rail car. I recognized the ad instantly when I saw it. I can't take the credit for the other subs; I'm not a typesetter, just a script editor and sound guy.
3. Uguu~ factor!
TRIVIA: When a previous joint I did was involved in did the promo reel, the "Uguu~" almost didn't make it into the completed script. Our other editor apparently didn't know about it, so I set 'im straight.
MORE TRIVIA: One "Uguu~" didn't make it into ep 1's script. I leave it to you to guess which one. ;)

Short answers - I'm sorry I can't flesh out my observations at the moment; I'm braindead from physics work. XD I might edit some more in if I think of anything.
1) I suppose taking that (and everything else) into consideration, that's very commendable. Perhaps even more notable is the fact that you're actually completing episodes -- a feat some friends and I failed to do when we tried fansubbing.
2) I've noticed that you guys have indeed gotten faster, to the point where you guys now usually release first. That's pretty awesome.
-=-
1) In that case, your subs are ideal for that kind of environment.
2) Ah. Out of curiosity, is your typesetter flexible enough to do 'dynamic' subs like that?
3) a. Awesome. XD Have you done the same for Makoto's 'auu' and Sayuri's 'nihaha'? I haven't checked any of your recent subs, and I'm tempted to spring for your episode 6 sub, when it releases, to double-check.
b. I'm tempted to dig up my ep1 disc of goodness just to find out. XD
Bump for the release of Episode 6.
This post will be edited with comments. A lot. As per usual. ^^;

I am still waiting for this series to pick up. As it is I am getting a little bored. This "let's spend a little bit of each episode teasing each girl in turn and only vaguely hinting at their deeper problems" mechanic is starting to get on my nerves.
Also, Ayu's is probably the arc I am absolutely least interested in...

You'll be missing out a lot.
That's the regular pace of the series; its supposed to be enjoyed. But if it annoys you, maybe try the first series? I dunno.
i always wondered how much dust they must get in their eyes all day, when 40% of their face is their eyes.
and how many drops of eye drop would they need if their contacts dried out? actually, taking from the sizes of their eyes, their contact lenses must be huge.
anime amazes me.

Watching the last episode of Azumanga Daioh, and knowing it was over, after having seen the rest of the series spread out over nearly 2 years at No Name Anime, was a very sad experience.
I shall admit that I haven't gotten around to finishing Azumanga Daioh yet. I have like ~8 episodes to go. I prolly will watch it from teh beginning since I forgot everything =(
The preview for episode 8 has two girls featured.
One is Makoto.
The other, Mishio.
We're winding down to the end of Makoto arc. T_T
; ;
D: Makoto.... T.T
Episode 8: KyoAni is quite skilled at making the Makoto arc a slow, painful tearjerker. Grrrrr...;__;
Episode 9: I've finally stopped hating Makoto. I mean, when she dropped the cat off the bridge in ep 6 or 7, I was seriously pissed, but now I just feel so sad for her... :< And yet, this arc still isn't over! I guess it's a good thing we're looking at 24 episodes, not 13 or 14, because there really wouldn't be time for more than one more arc if it were.
God, I'm so behind! I shall turn on my "Catchup!" swith soon! ~.~

Heh, I just caught up in the past day and a half. With finals week approaching, I suddenly have time to procrastinate by watching anime. Well, that and I finished Metroid Prime.
caught up by watching up to 9. its getting pretty good.

Episode 10: You wanna know how this episode ends? It ends with me sobbing my face out.
(1) Something about episode 10 just reminded me of "DEATH BY PURIKURI!"
(2) I was kind of surprised by what happened as a result of the comment regarding "if she wants anything, please let it happen" and all. I mean, I put two and two together, I just didn't think they'd actually go there.
(3) I think Akiko-san has become my favorite character. She's so incredibly nice, sincere, understanding... basically the perfect mother for Nayuki, Yuuichi, and the others. I have so much respect for her.
(4) I came closer than usual, but didn't quite sob my face out. We'll see if any of the other arcs can really pull out the tears.

Well, I was thinking about this in the moe thread, but it's more relevant to this discussion, so I'll put it here.
You remember how, earlier on, I wasn't really feeling this show because I didn't feel much of an attachment to any of the characters, and the stronger plot wasn't yet developing? I realized how that works and why I like the show now. Two things happened to change that.
Problem one: none of the individual characters really did appeal to me on an emotional level. Ayu and Makoto were both rather immature, Nayuki is kind of lost in the clouds (and mildly cute for it, but not seriously moe), and I didn't really know what to think about the other characters, but they seemed more odd than anything else. Well, then I noticed Akiko. Not only is she beautiful (I love that blue color and her braid) but she has an amazingly kind, wise personality which also somehow manages not to be detached from the situation: she cared about Makoto, too. So much for my not caring about the characters problem.
Problem 2: the plot wasn't really going anywhere. Then the Makoto arc started up in earnest, and instantaneously my interest in the show was piqued. It was so sad and beautiful, just like AIR - exactly what I was hoping for. Problem solved.
On a completely different and rather humorous note, if Yuuichi and Makoto got married, and Makoto has passed on now, does that make Yuuichi a widower? If so, how does that affect his appeal to the other girls in the series - is he all the more desirable because of it?
Episode 13: UGUU POWER, ACTIVATE
In addendum, apparently even Kanon ties back into Haruhi's three-years-ago mythos...and Mai has nice legs.
And forward to episode 18... XD
Shiori's arc is <3. >.<
Can't wait to get to see Nayuki's arc since it wasn't covered before. D:

Watched episode 19. I'm really just not interested in these flashbacks with Ayu. But as for present-day, that's keeping my interest. Glad to hear Shiori-chan is doing fine. Gee, I wonder who Nayuki is talking about. -_-; And lastly, the end of the episode...
O.O
Well, they've tackled all the stand-alone scenarios, time to move into the Nayuki/Ayu arc. These two are interesting in that their stories cannot stand alone from each other, but at the same time, they cannot both be accurately told because of conflicting events. Here's to hoping Nayuki doesn't get completely shafted like in the Toei version.
Nayuki gets love for the first time in a long time. The race, cafe, and walking home scenes were the highlight for me this time around. <3

Ah, so that's how the two storylines work. I suspected it might be as such. I know my personal preferences lean toward Nayuki, for sure. Ayu is just so... boring! The race and cafe scenes were nice, for sure.
I haven't read the rest of the thread, so I'm not sure if you discussed this, yet... but... from both the older series and the 2006-version of Kanon, did you guys ever wonder what Nayuki's mother's "Special Jam" is made out of? I'm... really curious.

Amen brother. Ayu's the complete bottom of my list.
D: I am still somewhat of a fan of hers but I do agree that she's fakely innocent and naive... She's fallen on my list since the first series. I guess my tops this time are Shiori, Nayuki, Makoto, and Mai. Probably the bottom for me would be Kaori. I understand why Kaori did what she did to Shiori but I can't bring myself to totally forgive her.

(I have a habit of after watching a very powerful work, my mind seems to enjoy emulating or assimilating the soul of the character in which is present. Think of it as a forced personality cosplay that occurs. I really don't know what causes such a strange reaction within, but it usually wears off after a few hours. Put a uniform on me and we're set.)
~Chun
I am similarly touched. ; ;
I think the only arc that won't make me shed a tear this time through is Ayu's. Everyone else is already accounted for by this episode.
Ayu probably would've made me cry later on if I hadn't watched Kanon 2002.
T_T AKIKO-SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!
...i agree Rome...
but.. i'm kinda wondering
is the Ayu arc over?
or is just taking a break with a Nayuki arc?
There's more to Ayu's story. We're just getting a Nayuki intermission. Although, wishful thinking on my part, but they could ignore the rest of Ayu's story and we could get a Nayuki ending. =P As cool as I think that is, that wouldn't be a satisfying ending considering how far they've delved into Ayu's arc already.
still.lagging.far.behind....
...only 5 more episodes left, is it not?
Or was it three?
... grr there is just isn't enough love for Ayu
you people have no hearts! T_T

KyoAni, Nayuki Arc Followup kthxbye.
Finally watched the last two episodes.
Hooray. They were nicely done and not so Ayu-centric that it bothered me. And finally, the series pretty much makes sense. I am very impressed!
Okay, here's what kinda bugs me.
In episode 9, when Yuuichi is reading the manga to Makoto ... why is the manga in English? When Yuuichi says "ã•ã,ˆãªã,‰â€ã€€the video frame reads "Farewell" in English....

You're using a sub. (As another example of 'dynamic subbing', the monitor really doesn't say "You win!" in Haruhi ep 11. It was edited in.)
If you're using the raw, I'd like to see. Bring it later today. :3
I started dropping the series after Kawasumi Mai's arc. After that... I sort of just... dragged myself......thr....oug..h........uguu..
Not too big a fan of Ayu either. Glad there's a Naiyuki arc. I'm going to get back in.
