I have been watching Erementar Gerad for about a year now and really enjoy it, i think its an original story,but with the classic characters, what do you think?

I only saw the 1st episode but I read a lot of the manga and the anime is quite different. Its good but I'm too lazy to d/l it at the moment.

I only watched the end of the anime series. Wasn`t my taste.

Hah, I watched about... 12 episodes?  It's pretty all right and I love the EGL with Rin.  Bwhahaha.  Anyhoo, I saw the video game, and boy, was I stunned. XD

Anyways, I watched 5 episodes and it's about as cliche as you can imagine. It had a kickass OP song though and that's about it. It looked so much cooler too...=(

Now normally Im against digging up very old topics like this, but...I just have to ask:

I have never heard of this series before, and I know absolutely NOTHING about it save it's title.

But....are you sure it shouldnt be "Elemental?" <_<

The Japanese release clearly has roman letters that read: "EREMENTAR GERAD". The localization changed that to "Elemental Gelade".

To put it shortly:
The story is quite cliché but fun anyway; the setup feels a LOT like Skies of Arcadia, but it gets a little different after a while. The best thing about the anime is the Yuki Kajiura soundtrack though.

Yeah, the name change is one of those things you need to either accept or whatever and you see it in other things like Kannaduki no Miko vs Kannazuki no Miko.

However, one thing I'm not accepting is the name change of Utawarerumono to Chronicles of the Shadow Warrior which they thankfully changed back...@__@

"Kannaduki" no Miko was a choice of romanization on the part of the fansubbers. It was never written that way by the anime creators, nor was it pronounced that way in Japanese.

When pronounced in Japanese, the word uses a づ - that is, a "tsu" syllable with diacritic marks. The way this is pronounced in Japanese sounds more like "dzu" than anything else. "Elemental Gelade", however, assumes that the creators of the show screwed up when they tried to write their title in English, and then tries to match their intentions with a proper English spelling.

The accept it or not part is in general of whether either some people accept how it's said or not in different ways whether they want to get technical with this or not. I personally say Kannaduki no Miko.

At the risk of sounding like crackpron(!) its not about the pronunciation, its about the romanized spelling. There are different ways to write "zu" (which is how I do it) but if you actually SAY "du" then...you'll sound like a fool? <_<

Sound like a fool because of not being technical? Come on, does it matter to be honest? Who cares how it's pronounced as long as YOU know what it means. if you want to sit there correcting what should be right and wrong, then we ALL should be making sure we are perfect in everything we say. Yes, it's wierd to call something whatever that technically has something correct to be called. I can write  Chrno Crusade or Chrono Crusade. I can call DaiAkuji, Daia-Kuji etc etc. If you or anyone else want to be technical of how things should be, then get in line for a person with accurate Japanese pronouncation to correct us all.

I'm not writing this to say what's wrong is right, I'm saying no one should be considered a fool for how they want to say somthing or pronounce something because it works better for the person. Criticizing and likewise just makes good use of what an elitist would sound like. But whatever, if you consider me an old fool, good for me. I've come to get used to stuff like "Kannaduki".."Gerad"..."Chrno". Right or wrong whatever, who cares. You know what I'm talking about. It's basically all it matters. End of discussion.

Sounds and phoenetics are quite important. The issue here is, romanization is stupid. Because pronounciation on romanization is usually incorrect, so it's the romanization that should be questioned, not the pronounciation(by who it was romanized by).

づ isn't a "dzu" sound.　ず　and づ have the exact same pronounciation. They're typed differently for word processing information.

is pronouned "kannazuki no miko" but for typing purposes they had to seperate the ず　and the づ characters. So one types out "ZU" and "DU" to get the correct desired character.

Pronouncing it "Kannaduki" is the incorrect pronounciation, but can be considered correct romanizing. Seeing that some people romanize phoenetically and others romanize through type text and character matching(which to be honest is a bad way to do it in my opinion since it leads to misinterpretations like this ordeal).

You can call anything, anything you want. You can call Mai-Hime Cheesecake punipuni afrobox... the point is, that it isn't correct. Romanization is one thing, it can be romanized as "My-Hime" or "Mai-Hime"  or "My-Heemay" and all of those would be correct romanizations... but the pronounciation will still be the same, regardless

Calling it "May-him-EE" is incorrect, even if through English phoenetics that's what the text looks like.

I think it is foolish. Mispronouncing someone's name purposely is quite offensive. "Your name is spelt Thy? It's pronounced TEE? I don't like that, I will call you Thigh".

How is that not foolish? It's not even ignorant, it's blantent stupidity. My favorite is "ramen". It makes me giggle whenever someone calls it "Raymen". I can understand if it's a difficult word to pronounce, like say Suikan" and someone pronounces it as "Suey-can" because that's do to difficulty, not actual choice. But Kannazuki being pronounced as Kannaduki, AFTER knowing this, is quite stupid.

But I think, romanization in general is pretty stupid. ^^ It's hard for English Speakers, it's hard for Japanese speakers, really... it's just pretty stupid.

That depends on whom you ask, and how precise you are in defining "exact same". Some people can hear differences in pronunciation that others cannot. An example in English - some people can hear the difference between different homonyms of "there" or "pear".

But there isn't a phoenetic difference. That's what makes them homonyms. They are literally pronounced the exact same way. If they sound similar, but slightly different, they are no longer homonyms. Cart and Card for example, are very similar in pronounciation, but not exactly the same.

But ず　and づ are physical homonyms. If the conversation were about kanji and different voice fluctations, you would have a standing point, but this isn't the same. There are four Japanese speaking friends sitting at my dinner table right now. One is Chinese, but fluent in Japanese, and they are from all different regions of Japan. All of them said they are pronounced exactly the same. Another friend of mine who is a translator also said the same thing to me when I asked, as well as my other friend and her entire department(a legal firm in Japan).

The difference between Chrno Crusade and Chrono Crusade is negligable for our purposes. You pronounce them the exact same way. You said you PRONOUNCE "Kannazuki" as "Kannaduki." You have specifically stated that you do not simply romanize it that way, you PRONOUNCE it that way. This is an incorrect pronunciation. It changes the word. This is like me (or better yet, someone from japan) pronouncing Chrono Crusade as "Chronic Crusade"

I did read what you said and it sounded a bit offensive to me. Now if you want to come back and respond this way rather than calling it a misunderstanding, then you're the one who needs to calm down.

To be honest about the pronounciation. I don't say Kanna"DEW" Ki no Miko. It's almost like a mix but it soundsmore like a "DEW" when I say it with a "ZU" sound. Hard to explain but maybe I wasn't too clear. I was more talking about how it's spelled since I'm not a linguistic kind of guy when it comes to these things.

And I do sound offensive when I reply sometimes unintentionally.. so yeah.

I like how this changed from elemental gelade to a romanization debate.


I'd have to say elemental gelade is pretty good despite the cliche aspects of the story line... I like it enough to cosplay as Kuea :3

Im not really interested in finding new anime right now, seeing as how I cant watch them and it would just make me sad =(

Series is easy-going and fun but cliche and predictable.

It plays out rather like Slayers, it's not spectacular, but fun and easy to watch.

You're example of "Chronic Crusade" is a bad example as it sounds nothing like "Chrono Crusade". Kannaduki and Kannazuki can sound similar. And no, I don't care how someone else pronounces it as long as they aren't pronouncing  KannaFUki no Miko or making up their own crap. Hell, I can say Coco Crusade, Comic Crusade etc etc. But I'm not making things up. As I said, stop getting so technical and tring to sound right. It's not that big of a deal what someone else wants to call if they happen to be told the wrong thing and got used to seeing it and writting it that way.
