Title: What did you guys think of the MusicFest?
Post by: laminatedbunny on May 30, 2006, 06:10:46 PM
For me, I was really disappointed with the Musicfest this year.   In fact, I left before the show was even over. (I left after the fourth act) Maybe it's just my taste in music..but I was expecting to hear something like ZZ or maybe camino or nami tamaki. I guess I didn't really like the music because most of them made this sound..i don't know how to describe it..but they sang in a way where it sounds like they're wailing. kinda like.. UWAHHHHHHHHHHHHH. and i guess i don't like the kinda music where there's wailing like that. and I'm not terribly fond of crazy, head-banging, migrain-inducing songs either. D:

maybe i'm just picky. i dunno. i wasn't disappointed the past two years at fanime, but i was this year.

Anyway, what did you guys think?

Mothercoat was awesome to me, in fact I bought the CD the first 20 seconds they started.

i did not go. too tired, and loud music for one night makes me go deaf for a week. so, no music fest this year.

however, i think we need amano. do you know how many people would go if she was there? :D:D sure, no one has ever heard of her *before* the con, but as soon as they get thier first taste of her...

she would be a HUGE hit. :D (and has the insanity needed for an anime convention setting~)

The sound was great, the audience sucked.

When I say the audience sucked, I don't mean as in behavior, but there was BARELY ANYONE THERE in comparison to the cosplay masquerade (Which, by far, was not as good as the music at that time).

I felt sorry for them, as with many others, at the attendance rate. They fly all the way from Japan to play to some audience that they want to enjoy listening to their sound, and no one is encouraged enough to go with their efforts.

There were so many great sounds there that I ended up staying almost all the time (Ran off to a panel in a middle). Swinging Popsicle in particular was very soothing to listen to after the hyperactive day to day of the con music and Miami. I was never a fan of punk rock so Goofy Style was not really of my flavor, so I stayed though after they were done.

There should have been MANY more people there. It was great.

I loved Mothercoat. I think this year's Musicfest was a LOT better than last year's. But did anyone else miss Ramen & Rice? I didn't seem them at the Fanime at all.

I saw one of the players, (The one who plays the violin... the name escapes me) on monday walking around the convention hall, so I said hello. She said they didn't play this year because one of them was in Los Angeles and couldn't make it to Fanime.

But it was at least nice seeing her. I knew I wasn't hallucinating when I saw her walking on the first floor when I was taking a rest on the second on Saturday.

Didn't get to see much but

Goofy Style - somewhat loud with lots of distortion. They didn't get the number of audience they deserved imo.

Swinging Popsicle - kicked ass, nothing more to say

Mothercoat - heard great things, missed it :(

I loved MusicFest! And I loved the mini-concerts at Stage One! It was a greta place to relax and get off your feet. However, it went on FOREVER and my friend and I got kind of bored...

I really enjoyed Musicfest this year, but for the most part I can't say I enjoyed it as much as I did last year's (maybe because I was really worn out--aching and sore feet and knees, and it wasn't my first musicfest--so less thrill?).

I loved all the performers, but at some points, some of the acts felt a bit too long. And at some points people were bored and/or tired waiting for the next act or of the performance. I guess that may explain why some people left during the middle of the concert? I also remember him (forgot his name..) going "wait wait! we still have one more band! Come back"

In many ways, I didnt feel the same excitement and fervor as I did with ZZ, and sort of disappointed that there wasn't a "ZZ" type of group this year that brought that same amount of thrill and fun. But not to say that the groups performing this year weren't awesome.

I totally agree with Chun though! The audience!! I was saddened! I was up by the stage, and at points during the performances I would look back at the chairs, balcony seatings..and they were pretty much EMPTY! I felt so bad for the performers as well.  Most of the performers were absolutely amazing! I especially loved how Mothercoat involved the audience, and just how hyper they were xD (along with a few other groups). Gyaah, it must have been awful to look into the big civic auditorium, and see so many empty seats though ;[. And I'm amazed at how many times bigger the turn out is for the cosplay show than there is for musicfest!

Also! Was anyone here at Stage One on Sunday? That was pretty sad too, there weren't TOO many people there, and by the time Uphold was up, half the people were gone, there was a line for Mothercoat's autographs (which took away a big chunk of the people), and barely anyone up front by the stage. I could see the frustration and disappointment in the vocalist's/band members' faces as they stared into the audience..and his hesitation to start performing (because, there were just so few people up there :[ ). Also one of the coordinators had to actually point and tell people to go up front. D: The fact is, it just isn't as exciting if the audience isn't involved. Maybe more publicity?

But as for good things--there was a lot of variety, and a lot of the bands have a lot of personality, and also very approachable when you pass them by in the hall xD. Waah, and a lot of the music was very catchy x).

Also, Kamijo!!! I loved his little live :D
But it was frustrating having to think --omg, what time is it.. need to line up for musicfest ! xD

Random note- I couldnt tell where one of Goofy Style's songs ended or started xD, but loved them anways.

And that is that, I think this got too long >>

Dude, uphold kicked ass... so much that I actually raked out $20 to get a shirt.  And Nolan, the drummer from Swinging Popsicle was great to talk to backstage. I liked musicfest this year because they brought so many different styles to fanime.
Title: Why didn't many of the attendees go to the music fes this ye
Post by: kndy on May 31, 2006, 12:39:01 AM
I still have a hard time understanding for the past four years now, what is it about the music fest that the attendees of Fanime are not supporting it. There so many people attend and you would assume a large part of the attendees would support the concerts.

Do you think that possibly the Fanime con goers only want visual kei JROCK groups?  It seems like the trend has been when a visual kei band performs the majority of the people come and afterwards they leave and not stay for the other bands.

So, I 'm curious if the trend that people want to see instead of diverse bands...just visual kei JROCK bands or female pop bands.  I'm curious if Fanime was able to get Orange Range or Asian Kung Fu Generation (both bands with popular anime tie-in songs), would it matter?   Would people attend or would they only want to go to the visual kei JROCK concerts instead.

If you didn't go to the music fes...why was that?  (too many better things that your interested in was competing for your time against the bands performing, no interest in certain bands, etc.)

I went to Musicfest and enjoyed it quite a lot. Goofy Style, Swinging Popsicle, Mothercoat and awesome for me. Up Hold, they were good but I'm not too into their kind if music. I saw them all again at Stage One on Sunday. I'm not really sure what was up with the crowd either but the people who were there were in to it.

Music Feast this year really wasn’t my fancy. My main favorites were Swinging Popsicle and Mothercoat but that’s about it. Fanime tried mixing too many genre's together and plus the crowd was really small. Everyone pretty much left because the music just didnt mix well with them. Though the one thing that ticked me off the most was the announcer/MC. Everything he said was so BS. Most of it wasn’t even legit/true and he had absolutely no background knowledge of the Music Industry in Japan.  Anyways I feel bad for the bands too for not getting the type of energy they planned. Oh well hopefully next year it will be better..

this is going to sound super lame, but honestly, from hearing about members rave about music fest in the past, i figured that i would have to give up an arm and a leg (not money-wise, but in terms of.. battling through the crowds and such) just to get into music fest. had i known that there would be a notoriously low attendance, i totally would have made the effort to go. i'm a hip-hop/urban fan, so poplar would've really catered to my tastes, i reckon. next year, if i am at fanime, i will go to music fest for sure ):.

Yeah, I spent most of my time during MusicFest up at the front, watching the crowds.  Mothercoat though... whoa.  That singer is off his friggin rocker, and it was fun/annoying to chase him around Civic.  >_<

KICKASS!

No mosh pit kinda sucks but I understand since there is little ones up there. Started one 3 times but got shut down in about 10 to 20 sec. Darn you fanime bouncers.. tee hee. Compared to some concerts ive been to the volume was too low.. Yes too LOW. hehe Uphold rocks! Im a total Metal head.

Maybe next year have one j-pop and j-goth groups?
Title: What did you guys think of the MusicFest?
Post by: Nina Star 9 on May 31, 2006, 06:39:18 AM
i can think of a perfect non-viskei j-rock group with a female lead singer (most popular j-rock tends to be male singers, from what i have seen, and j-pop tends to be more females) and is totally awesome that would be a great hit at fanime. she has some really diverse music, too, so pop fans and rock fans will find her great. (in fact, everyone i have introduced her to thinks she is fantastic. ^-^)

and i was told that one of her songs, and i can think of a few more that probably can also, would SO create a mosh pit at fanime.

I loved musicfest. This was the first musicfest that I've been to and I was very impressed by it. Swinging popsicle and mothercoat by far stole the show. What an addon mothercoat was! They definately were getting some love from the crowd. I missed their performance in that one room on Friday, but I heard they were drawing a crowd. We definately need to get them back here. For me, musicfest was one of the major highlights of Fanime. I love music, regardless if its rap, rock, r&b, or whatever. I really don't understand why people aren't going to a concert that doesn't cost extra. I just hope that we didn't leave a bad taste in the musician's mouth about the lack of crowd.

There definately was a problem with the order of the acts and some of the acts didn't really fit in with the others. I think it would have been better to have a maximum of 4 acts in total. 5 just felt too long. I had to leave by the time Uphold came up, but it wasn't because I didn't want to watch them. Hopefully more people will go to the musicfest next year.

Well, this was my 3rd Fanime and the first time at Musicfest, mainly because I didn't know about it the last 2 years.

I really had a blast, the bands where great and I bought all their cds, except for Miami, because I couldn't find them. But it was great fun. I also thought more would show up, but I just figured it was normal since there is a lot going on at Fanime. I can't wait to see what they bring out next year.

Oh yeah, Mothercoat rocks.

I was very dissapointed at MusicFest this year. The sound was horrible. You had to be standing up in the front to get a good idea of how the band sounded.

I felt bad for UpHold because there was noone there when they came on stage. I wonder if this was the weirdest gig they've ever played.

Also the WORST thing about MusicFest was the annoying YesJapan.com crew... that white dude was gettin on my nerves, presenting every band like he's on TRL and pluckin his business every 5 seconds. It got tired very fast. He was like lecturing us on how cool he was because he travels to Japan and meets random underground bands. Meh.

I wish every band had been introduced in a different way. Like in previous years, with ZZ and Camino doing grand entrances. It pumps people a lot more than some random business dude tryin' to make a profit out of Japanese underground bands.

[oh yeah, and I was SO lookin' forward to seein' Guitar Vader but at least Mothercoat was okay]

my 2 cents,
~T

This was my first Musicfest and I thought it was absolutely awesome.

The bands all sounded wonderful, although I don't really like screamo much. They were great to talk to, amusing to watch, and all very nice.

I agree with you guys on the audience. I wished that more people were willing to be open about their music tastes and just maybe sample everything. I don't normally listen to hiphop or electropop, but I found that I really liked what miami and poplar were playing.

I really hope that Fanime will bring them back next year, as they all were great this year! Swinging Popsicle and mothercoat especially.  :D

The MusicFest was frickin AWESOME!!!  I stayed for the WHOLE show ALL the BANDS were great in their OWN way. For me,   I love hearing a wide variety of styles. It was all over too soon.

I was sitting upstairs and watched all the folks rush the stage after the “hey folks this area is for you” announcement.  All da chairs on the ground floor went from being full to empty.  :o Which stayed like that pretty much the whole show.  The reason why I was sitting upstairs is because   I'm too short to see anything.  *sniff sniff*

Besides being asked to move back way too many times  :( (what was up with that), I thought the whole waiting in line experience was way better than 2004.

And... Stage One. Great idea!  8) I was constantly checking it out on Fri, Sat, Sun.

I still have "Kyoukai Muki Sekai" and "I Just Wanna Kiss You" going through my head. :D

What I'm wondering did that poor cymbal survive the night.

pchan ^_^
More Goofy Style , please.

Let me start off by stating how much I love Musicfest and the great artists there every year; however, this year I feel was based around great diversity, which in some cases can be good but you know what they say "too many chefs spoil the soup."

What I mean to say is that while there was plenty of talent and great performances but the drastic contrast between music genres was too vast in my opinion. Going from spritual rock with soulful influences to experimental electro-pop to alternative indie pop/rock and so on and so on can make for an interesting experience but I believe its best to stick to one round about genre.

The crowd could have kept up the energy it had in the beginning but adapting to so many different sounds in such short periods of time was relatively tough for most people who have never heard such types before Fanime especially those without an open mind. Last year was just as diverse but with sounds that related closer to home. A classical piece of old favorites and a new twist on an AKFG song by Ramen and Rice then R&B/Pop Performance by Kumiko Kato and a great rock finisher by a group that showed awesome stage performance and high energy, ZZ.

Lastly, I want to thank MusicFest/Fanime staff for their awesome job in bringing us top notch performances and great musical acts. I think if staff keeps these small issues I mentioned previously in mind they can make a big effect on next years Musicfest with high energy and even better times.

I wasn't too into Music Fest when we got there, I wanted to go and do some other stuff at the con.  I liked Swinging Popsicle but they were just finishing when we got there.  I left to go put some stuff in my room, but then I came back for Up Hold... OH YAH!  They F'in rocked!  I wanted to mosh but there were only like two other guys who wanted to mosh :(

Checked out stage 1 on Sunday and really dug it.  Swinging Popsicle was awesome again, as was Up Hold.  Although I think the crowd had a hard time deciding whether they were doing sound check or if they were starting their set.  I did feel kind of bad for them it got really empty in there after Mothercoat ended.
 Up Hold sold out of CD's and Swinging Popsicle sold out of EVERYTHING.  I didn't have any cash on me during MusicFest so I couldn't purchase anything then.

Also is it just me or did the lead singer from Mothercoat look like a scarecrow?

Thanks for all of your input, everyone. I'm sad to say that I saw most of these complaints coming for months, but I'm glad that many people simply resonated with the music. This year really was about getting a wide variety of music to your ears, to bring you something you'd never hear anywhere. I'm sorry so many people missed it, because something on this scale probably won't happen again.

Well, maybe in a few years.

(Personally I'd love to help out at JRock-Con, but Pimpstress would kill me times a million. Until she saw all those pretty VK boys...)

I think it's about time to blog MF... too much to discuss just here.

Music Fest was not as good as last year when ZZ performed (hope they come back) but I still had a good time. Miami didn't do it for me but I enjoyed mothercoat (lead singer had a lot of energy and was entertaining) and Up Hold very much. Too bad there wasn't a bigger audience.

I didn't attend musicfest(at least a large portion of it) for mainly two reasons.I was disappointed that guitar vader had to pull out, and because I sampled the other bands and wasn't very interested with them.

I only caught goofy styles performance.Although I did like how chanted during his singing, the music seemed rather bland. And I couldn't figure out why people where "rocking out" to them so much.(no offense guys)

I was happy with the first few rows not having chairs.I prefer to stand up during concerts.

I look forward to next year's musicfest.Maybe a japanese power metal band might show up but that's just my little humble hearts desire. :p

Well I wasn't into Poplar so much but..... Also I was really dissapointed about Guitar Vader not coming this year. Maybe they can come next year? I really appreciate Fanime mixing things up this year. I thought miami and mothercoat were fricken awesome. I think everyone is being a little hard on the fanime staff and JapanFiles. No one knows any of these bands in the U.S and from what I could tell there was almost no promotion for this event at the con at all. I hope there will be even more diverse bands next year. I loved the variety of bands this year! However, I was kind of pissed off that not a lot of people showed up at MusicFest, yet the freaking Masquerade was packed. I love that these bands came here from Japan to play for us, I just wish they would have had a bigger audience to play for. Also, MusicFest went on for a long time. My short attention span was having a hard time. I left during MotherCoat and had to check out MotherCoat and UpHold at Stage One.

6 bands was too much. How about this for next year?

Swinging Popsicle
Guitar Vader
Mothercoat
ZZ

I am talking about just for the musicfest main event. Having another Stage 1 would be awesome too. Any other bands could play on that. I think this would be an amazing line up for next year.

Yeah. I really liked Stage One. I know MusicFest is supossed to be the big thing, but I think they should limit the time of MusicFest and have the bands go crazy at Stage One. When I left MusicFest, it was 3 1/2 hours into it, and the last band wsn't even playing yet.

I had fun ping-ponging in the Mosh itself.  My friend Mike went a little crazy and smashed into the crowd.  It was a blast.  I weigh about 260lbs, my friend mike weighs close to 400lbs and used to play American Football, so you can imagine the power behind his bullrush.
My crazy friend would also shout for bands to hurry up and let Uphold get on the stage.
On the other hand, I really did enjoy miami and Poplar.  Miami had that mischevious feeling and poplar really mixed it up with there, hiphop/rock/r&b sound.
Mothercoat was really weird, was this the band where the lead singer ran around the auditorium?
I could understand why more people did not show up to the concert.  Being a bunch of anime geeks, many of the fanimecon attendees are simply not interested in music and would rather do something else with their time.

See, this kinda pisses me off. As a small female weighing about 125lbs, I wouldn't feel safe if guys who towered over me and weighing over 100lbs more than me were moshing around me. If your friend hit me, he could very well cause a lot of damage, so I can imagine how much damage he could cause some girls weighing a bit over 100lbs. That's not ok. He could really have hurt someone and it doesn't seem like it even matters to you or your friend. Please take care in the future to watch where you're moshing and who you're hitting.

And shouting on stage to hurry up doesn't do anything other than annoy people. The bands go by their play list and having people say that you should hurry up and have another band get up there really speaks of impatience and intolerance for other music. Please be nicer to the guests, they want to feel wanted and appreciated.

I thought moshing wasn't going to be allowed because of injuries and stuff? Besides, a lot of fans came to listen to music, not to mosh and get injured. Otaku generally sit around watching anime all day...they're not really in shape, and knocking one over will probably kill them. lol jk. Anyway, I think it's rude and immature to shout at the bands to hurry up so another band could play. And what happens if they did hurry up? Would they speed through their songs and make them sound crazy-hyper-fast? lol. Anyway, my point is, if you wanted to only see UpHold, you should have waited one day to go see them at Stage One instead of going to MusicFest. And since you and your friend were stupid enough to go to MusicFest and watch everyone, you should have tolerance for our guests. no one forced your friend to go to MusicFest. You guys could have gone and waited outside and come back later or something.

Quote from: madmanlotarI had fun ping-ponging in the Mosh itself.

Well, to our credit, we moshed in the back of the crowd.  I had no idea that that massive guy was going to knock the crowd, including myself, around.  Security did intervene.  I really doubt that the bands themselves were annoyed by my friends shouting, this is a concert afterall. Miami seemed to really go wild after my friend shouted Uphold's name.  Only people I could see that would be offended are those with no sense of humor; he waited until each band was done to shout.  If you had attended or paid attention then you would have heard.  I am guessing that you did not see Uphold and Miami get into a little altercation on Friday during their stage 1 performances.

Why would we want to wait until all the bands were through to see Uphold; we enjoyed ourselves.  Besides, he did not shout until the band finished its set.   We did not start the mosh, we merely ended it.  I find it stranger that small people would be standing up in front during the death metal band.  I find it just as stupid for people to just stand still and zombie through a death metal set.  I enjoyed all the bands, and plan on watching them next year as well.  By tolerance to guest, are you referring to the bands or the attendees?  I am sure that the bands cared less since they enjoy any attention they can get and as for the attendees, anyone who was there apparently did not mind.
If there is to be any complaint, I would say that the staff was pretty incompetent at letting people in initially.  If they were counting people at the door, it would have been more effective to use a number clicker instead of having people counting with their fingers.

I know for a fact, being small myself and weighing in at 110 lbs that moshing is completely what you make it. Someone pushes you around you kick their ass back... or if you have no way of doing that move elsewhere. Not everyone in the pit is going to bare a freakish resembelence in size and power to Juggernaut.
Ironically out of all of my friends and the shows I have been to the only of us to be injured is the largest...she broke her leg :P

I absolutely loved Musicfest! I bought all the CDs from the bands I wanted before they even performed! And I caught the bassists pick from my favorite band Swinging Popsicle. I was also the one to remind the MusicFest host that the other band playing was Swinging Popsicle when he forgot onstage. I was pissed that all these people went to the masquerade rather than MusicFest when in my opinion, Masquerade was one of the crappiest, most annoying, and most geeky events at the con. I mean come on, a bunch of losers prancing on stage in their cartoon costumes doing bad skits, and a dorky host that wouldn't shut up about freeking stage ninjas, seriously people, you choose THIS over MusicFest?! I am SOOOO Glad GuitarVader did NOT show up. I listened to their samples beforehand and watched their movie, and ew I don't like them, their sound, or their video.

My FAVORITE BANDS:

Swinging Popsicle <3333
MotherCoat <333 (I love their Salesgirl more than their band though. >__>)
UpHold (They're okay for their rock)
Miami (They're just cute <3)

Goofy Style was okay, but too monotonous and unvaried in my opinion. I really don't like the rap Hip-Hop thing so even though I thought the lead singer was especially cute, I didn't purchase Poplar's CD, though I'm sure people who listen to that Genre would be delighted with their work, they seemed to know what they were doing.

Oy, and me and my friend are plotting to get a spot in musicfest in future years for our band Solano Slip. >____>

Why the counting?

Anyway, yes it is rude to demand another band, even after the performance of one band and before the opening of another. Think how you would feel if you were the next band up, nervous and such and you heard someone in the crowd impatiently screaming for a different band of your own. They wouldn't appreciate that. Personally I think Uphold was okay, but they aren't even near the top of my list of the bands there.

I myself find nothing wrong with moshing as it proves your support for the band and they enjoy seeing their audience so emphatic for their music, but you must keep it to a minimum or not at all. Head-banging will do, but we don't want injuries, especially since the majority of the Con-Goers are women, children and really wimpy pale guys. All are fragile. Think about the wimpy guys. =O

The bands were great! I loved them all!

The audience was lousy. Most of the audience left half way through the concert. More people were at the masquerade, which I thought wasn't worth going to. I left during the intermission. Also most of the people in the "pit" were standing there just staring. If you are going to be in the front, at least scream, jump, and headbang! The bands seriously deserved a much more enthusiastic audience. For the people that stayed until the very end (myself included) and headbanged/jumped/screamed, you guys rock. My neck STILL hurts from headbanging. And I would like to repeat, the audience was lousy.

I wasn't too fond of the bouts of moshing that insued. I almost fell over when a girl rammed into me out of nowhere.

Another Stage One next year would be awesome! This was where my friends and I spent most of our time. The whole meet and greet concept after a performance, in my opinion, was a great idea.

And I like that line-up.  :D

Stage One was awesome in that it provided an intimate setting for the bands to play and I got to high five members of mothercoat and had my picture taken with them - again awesome

Again why I think fanime should have a little fenced off area for all the moshers. But of coarse insurance reasons Tony mentioned once will prevent any moshing to begin with.

I'm wondering what are the requirements to play at the music fest. My brother has a band and they're always looking for gigs? Do you have to be Asian and possess musical talent? Or ethnicity does not matter as long as the music is related to J-pop / J-rock, anime, games, etc?

Sorry...I wasn't able to attend music fest this year! ^^;;; Just curious!

You definitely don't have to be Asian. But I would think you would want some musical talent because you wouldn't want to embarrass yourself on stage in front of all those people. As for the type of music, I'm not really sure.

Judging from the samples this year, I'm pretty sure almost any style is permitted. I'm planning to try to fix up my band this year to play for MusicFest either 2007 or 2008.

But other than playing for ourselves, the other reason I wanna play for musicfest is if anyone like Mineko comes again I can be close to her backstage and such. <3333    @ 3@!

i liked swinging popsicle, mothercoat and uphold. goofy style made me feel like i was a temple and i should've been praying to the sound of the monk accompanied by the band. i know for sure that many of my friends who wanted to attend fanime didn't because they had prom to go to. Since they are seniors,  its understandable that they wanted to go to prom.

i left part way through mothercoat because this girl kept trying to eat up my space upfront. I finally got fed up with it and just left to get fresh air and to calm down. i came back in to grab my camera then to go buy some cds and take pictures before going back in to sit in the balcony to rest my tired feet and hear uphold.

uphold was awesome in my opinion, i would've been in the mosh pit area head banging with everyone else if it weren't for my feet.

I didn't care for Musicfest this year.  My fave year was 2004, more energy, more bands I had actually heard of, and the crowd was more into it.

I think if you are going to have such a variance in style like this year you should announce when each is going to play so people can pick adn chose when to show up for teh style of musci they actually like.
Like Goofy Style and the last act were more heavy rock and should have played one after another to keep the even energy flow of the crowd up.  I felt by the time the last act came on there wasn't much of a crowd left (including me...my ears hurt and actually BLED from the act before...the one with the freaky singer.)

I would like to see Duel Jewel return to Fanime as they were kind of a staple for Fanime for many years.  I miss them...  ;_;[/b]
