Why do some people dont like it? Just wondering...I mean, its a great feeling to be hugged by someone, especially someone like you *cough* otaku *cough*
And most people say yes to total stranger hugs anyway...but why do others say no? Owo?
It comes down to two reasons for the most part. The first is that some people aren't particularly affectionate and prefer a greater amount of personal space than others might. That means that they prefer more distance between themselves and others and would rather that others not get that close, let alone hug them.
The other reason is that they're not all that comfortable with people they don't particularly know, especially when it comes to physical contact. If they know you fairly well, then they'd be more comfortable with a hug. If they don't, then that hug would really put them off.
It just comes down to respecting each other's comfort zones. There may be a lot in common between hugger and huggee, but if the huggee isn't comfortable with it, then it'd be prudent for the hugger to back off.
And some crazy otaku's glomp can be as dangerous and standing in the middle of a freeway on a busy day.

One more thing not yet mentioned is that some people's costumes are fragil, and one good glomping could easily destroy some costumes.

I guess that makes sense
There is also the point where the person just doesn't want to be randomly hugged.
To demonstrate, how would you feel if someone hugged you out of nowhere, say, on the street or in a dark alley.
Uh...okay, not a good example.
Just saying; not all people would like to be given random affection. A lot of people don't, but you still need to respect the fact that some people aren't willing to accept hugs from random people.
okay, random question~
if someone wanted a hug and i wanted ot turn them down, how would i go about it? meh, i'm often too shy to say anything like "sorry, no, i dont want a hug", so~~
i would probably end up just kinda standing there with really wide eyes shaking my head "no" and then run off. >>

Just say what you said here "Any human contact will leave me freaked out for the rest of the day, so sorry, no"
But if you say that, you'll probably scare them off...
If you cosplay, you can say it's because of your costume, "My costume hurts/gets destroyed when someone hugs me so sorry"
And did you just so happen to cosplay as Sora from Kingdom Hearts this year? I'm just wondering...><UUU
i cant stand KH, so no. :P
i guess i coudl blame it on my costume, but that wont work with some of my costumes. >.<
thankfully no one has ever wanted a hug. :D
I am one of those who don't liked to be hugged/glomped at cons by people I don't know. If there my friends then yeah hugs are fine because most of the time I haven't seen them in a long time and am glad to see them, and hugs are totally fine.
I just don't see the point of hugging random people, you know? Unless there holding a sign stating it, i don't think people should ask random people, I know convention people tend to be more friendly, but that doesn't mean everyone wants there personal space invaded.
What I don't get, is why do guys come up to girls who have there bf right NEXT to them, and the guy proceeds to ask for a hug, that's TOTALLY out of line! =(
This was my 3rd year at fanime, I usually get a few glomps by girls, which is cool I guess :P
But this year I was in an elevator running upstaries to get some water and this ANNOYING KID and his 3 friends glomped me in the elevator. I made some ..um.. threats and they quickly let go... So yes.. Don't glomp people without permission god damn it.

Okay...then in this case:
" *Response removed for vulgar/grotesque content* "
Or around that.
I personally am uncomfortable with random hugging/glomping because, well, for one I am weird about strange guys (or most guys) hugging me. Secondly I met quite a few pervy guys at the con and it makes me nervous to have guys come up and ask for hugs or glomp me or something. Girls? I'd be fine giving them hugs. If they glomped me i might be scared though. I would probably end up falling or some such thing.
I'll just shake hands ok? :)
While I'm all for free love, somehow a person I don't know coming up randomly and forcing their body near me without asking my consent seems a little rude. The bottom line's been stated by most people in the thread; ask first. And if they say "no, thanks, I'd rather keep to myself?" That's all fine and dandy, just respect their preference. : )

Been there. I think it has something to do with being otaku. Wait, nevermind, there are
lots of idiots who don't know when to shut up.
Ah, I remember my first glomp. A group of two girls caught me on my way out the door to head to the Diridon Station, and asked for my picture.
I took the picture, then they asked if I wanted a glomp.
Having never had one before, I consented.
Their smiles got bigger, they started from a walk, to a run, to...
*WHAM-WHAM*!!!
Do denote, I've been tackled by football players, not in the thick of a match, but in P.E.
That's NOTHING like the force of two "skwee"-ing girls. It took quite a bit of energy to not fall over.

I feel that one. I grew up being tackled by my older brother (and my younger brother when he grew bigger than me)
But the fangirls that snuck up from behind my first Fanime? Knocked me down right off my feet. Not only was I freaked out (poor wittle con newbie I was), but now I was freaked out, in pain, and still had a strange person on top of me.
Fangirls! Be gentle! Cosplayers are fragile folk and we fall down easy.
My friends are the only ones who glomp me out of nowhere.
Otherwise, people usually ask me before glomping me...^^; Note the use of 'usually'.
No ones truly glomped me, they've just kind of ran up stopped then hugged me. So I never had the full force impact happen. Though I kind of wish I had experienced it during my first fanime.
I think glomping hurts XD
I've never received one (thank God) but I've given a few. I always had to ask the person if they were okay afterwards haha
As for me, I only glomp people that look like they deserve it.
Like the tetris blocks >.<
I've only been glomped once this year and it was on the last day too, I usually don't mind of I do get glomped or not. just try to knock me down, since I'm pretty tall.

but this year D: this guy kept asking for a hug so i gave him one to see if he went away. he kept comming back o___o i was scared so i said no but then he asked again
D: i wanted to kick him in the shin

That, plus theres also "No thanks". Or in the case of someone having a boyfriend or girlfriend "No thanks, my boy/girlfriend wouldn't like that."
Besides, while I do like hugging and glomping people, I do mostly ask permission before doing so...besides, I find 'sneaky' glomps to be a bit rude at times...especially when it comes to most people with delicate cosplays...
Not to sound like a jerk, but I just about completely ignore people who ask for hugs or glomps. Why? It's just weird. It really does come back to the "Would you hug a stranger on the street?" thing.
If I'm in costume though, it depends. I'll give folks who ask a hug if I'm doing Bridget cosplay, because I think it's funny. But if I'm just walking around a con in regular clothes and some person runs up with a sign going, "OMFG CAN I GIVE YOU A HUG!?" I'll just pass right through.
My first glomp...
It was by a guy.
When he glomped me, he clinged onto me with everything.
I had to run him onto a light pole to get him off.
This happened at night.
Sadly, it's not by a girl.

Ooh, that sucked Jyun....might need to think about that in case my plans for a panel based on that gets to pick up...
>_> I nearly knocked the living crap outta someone who randomly glomped me. All they did was gently glomp me and i tweaked over it. I don't mean to be that hostile...but random shit like that isn't a good idea around me. I have a tendancy to be jumpy like that and its my main reaction when I am startled. Some people are just like that, mostly due to truamatic events, reaction, or just not liking to be touched. I'm probably just one in like a bazillion people, but I don't want that hanging over my head.
I'd rather be asked to be glomped (Or given the chance to see a glomp comming for that matter), cuz that way i won't feel like shit for knocking their lights out or shoving them away. I know asking to glomp someone wouldn't be a real glomp. But to me it still is, that and I can get some cool pics with cool strangers. It's still pretty random for me, and I do like glomping as well, but I let the person see me. Like I hold my arms out and confront them. If they don't want to be glomped, they say so or move from it.
I just thought I'd bring that up...cuz I'm like that one in a million people who have a tendancy to react by hitting or shoving. T____T I get startled way to easily...
Oh, something I forgot to mention.
I came out of AX with a monster flu.
Anime conventions are death traps for the healthy. Random people hugging all over you is not helping anybody.
See?
One of the main reasons I don't like to be touched. GERMS!!!!
Sometimes a glomp is really enjoyable when you expect it, but when they're unexpected, they're only enjoyable when not too much force is put into it. Glomps can be really painful, and well, make you fall flat on your face with someone else's weight ontop of you. x.x; Not fun.
Face plants make Jun really sad. ;-;
eh.. not sure if i would have enough courage to actually tell someone that i dont want a hug or glomp, though... o-o;; *sighs* i'm hopeless. >>

Thats a good suggestion....besides, i've been hearing about a few people getting sick during the con, so thats practically some good advice and reason why people need to keep themselves clean...
Here's another point, glomps are cool and fun
...but please NO FUNKY ASS SMELLS...>_> I'll even let you use the shower in my hotel room. BUT PLEASE spare me and others of the ass smell....

I've never gotten glomped by a random person yet. o.o Only by my friends. Though I'm not too sure that I'd even want to get glomped by someone I didn't know. I probably wouldn't care that much, just be a little freaked out. ^^;
This was my first con, so I was suprised when some guy randomly poped up asking for a hug. But I did noticed that he had asked a lot of other people for a hug, so somehow it didn't freak me out as much. ^^ I'm just glad that (some)people seem to ask first, because (like alot of other people it seems) I'm picky about who I let touch/hug me. I was just like, "...ok?"
My friend didn't want a hug though, so she just shook her head and said "No thank you." I think that's a good way to say no. ^^
But yeah, I agree. I wouldn't want to be glomped by some random person who smelled. O_O -hides-

apparently i must have some sort of anti-glomp aura surrounding me, because i have been able to remain glomp-free so far. no running glomps resulting in injuries to me, yay!
On the glomp-er end of things, I tend not to go up and glomp/hug random people for...well, the reasons that people listed above for not liking to be glomped/hugged. *laugh* I wouldn't want to go up and hug somebody and end up making them mad, and it seems very rude to do it without their consent. Usually I don't want to hug people until I know them and think they're cool, anyhow (I'm one of those people who tends to do a lot of casual hugging and poking and harmless tactile stuff like playing with hair among friends)...but in the end, I usually let the other person move first, so that I can reciprocate without a danger of upsetting.
But yeah, hugging/glomping's kind of a personal thing, though I don't really mind if random people ask for hugs. ^_^ I, myself, have only actively hardcore-glomped somebody twice, and it was the same person who was trying to get, like, 1000 glomps before the end of the con or something. He was prepared for my flying leap. XD
Well this year was my first con and I got a good amount of hugs a few glomps and a couple hard core glomps. The hugs were ok, though I was a little uncomfortable giving them to guys who were seemingly gay. Though I was nice and did it cause otherwise it would be hypocritical...as long as they kept their hands where I could see them...otherwise...physical violence. The hugs were all consented to. The normal glomps where usually from people that I had met earlier to some extent and I could see them coming (for example a female Vash). The 2 hardcore glomps were from the same girl in the same day when I was wearing my Scar cosplay. The ferocity suprised me a little but by they second time I basically ran at her too and met halfway and spun her around...and she asked both times. The way I see it a good portion of the huggers/glompers do it cause your dressed as a character they like so I think its kinda nice to indulge their fantasy or whatever and give them a little hug. Oh and since I've always been in costume I never received and out of costume hug/glomp.

Well, if what I saw was the standard glomp it went like this. The glomper got in the tackle position like in football, then charged full speed and threw himself onto the glompee with all the force he could muster, trying to knock that person over. It was quite a sight, I can tell you! lol I know I wouldn't be able to stand up under that, so glomping's out for me. In my case the glomper was a guy I've heard is called Jordan. There was only one time that I almost got glomped. It was just as Fanime '05 ended. I was waiting for my dad to come and get me, this all happened outside the convention center by the way. Anyways, as I was waiting, all of a sudden, I see somebody running at me, trying to glomp me. Luckily, I was standing next to one of those things that you can sit on near where all the cars come. As the person ran, I quickly got up onto the one nearest me, and the glomper missed. I don't know why she wanted to glomp me.
That's the thing that I'll always remember about my 1st Fanime. I wasn't even targeted for a glomping this year, so that's good. I also have a feeling that I won't be glomped by fangirls/boys due to the fact that I won't be cosplaying as anyone specific at Fanime '07. I might not even cosplay this coming year at all, but that all depends on multiple factors that I can't take into account right now.

Well, I'm definitely going to keep cosplaying, but I think the costumes I choose aren't that glompable, if you know what I mean, and I won't wear a sign asking for any either! As Rufus Shinra in a wheelchair it sort of makes it hard to get glomped too. ^-^

Do you know any info on this guy, Jordan? Or any other photos of him? I'd like to see him in a goth outfit or any others he's been in. He was kinda weird but fun to be with and I wouldn't mind sending him a quick post or email.
Sadly no, I don't have any info or pics of him. I would actually like to drop him a line too but sorry I can't help you.

Oh well, maybe next Fanime Con, right? I'm sure he'll show up again.
^-^ And maybe in some new costumes! I just have to remember to get his contact info. Maybe I should just put a post-it note on my forehead??? I keep forgetting otherwise. lol
Er, I think it's been posted in a thread or two already, but his AIM username is Jordangaz, if you want to talk to him. (Far as I know, he's cool with it being circulated.)

Double thanks!
Yeah I had the problem where I was glomped by a guy who weighed over 200lbs....NOT fun. The problem was also that I hand my hands full so I kind of frooze and I couldn't brace myself properly to. It's always best to ask first.
Although if you see a really tall guy with NATURAL red hair....you ladies don't need to ask. Just glomp/hug me o.o
*glomp/hugs*
:wink:

*Eeps and almost falls over* Well hello to you to ^_^
It depends on the type of glomp. I dont mind being hugged or surprisingly hugged. But... there are some people *cough* who like to glomp attack and thats just a little overwhelming...
I'm fine with glomp attacks as long as the person doesn't weigh a lot, as well as me not having crap in my hands. Otherwise I can't brace properly >.<
So, I was reading this thread, and thought,
"Hey, a person could ask when they see someone they want to glomp 'Hey, can I glomp you in a bit?'" If they say yes, you walk off, and stalk 'em for a few. Then, you can glomp AND surprise, WITH their consent.
Well, I think I may do that, and perhaps it's the way to go for all you surprise-glompers.
-So Says Giorn
That is a really good idea. People can also ask if the person is open to glomping at random occations to. That way people like myself can get their fill of glomps more easily ^^;
Only problem is, stalkers =/= win. This is because these people being stalked aren't sure if you mean to GLOMP them, or, persay, do far worse or something. In either case, it's quite kah-ree-pay.
Interesting concept though.

Maybe it'd be better if we just walk off and if we see them again(NO STALKING) then attempt to glomp from behind. XD
*Shruggles* Personally I wouldn't mind cute girls stalking me, but I can understand how others might feel about it. It was just an idea so that people who enjoy random hugs, but might be too shy to ask a lot, can get their fill.
Do you think girls would mind if a White Ninja just picked them up and started walking away with them?
:roll:
Hugs/Glomps are perfectly fine. I don't mind it at all.
:3
Hugs....glomps....and stalking is all fine if you're a girl.
If you're a guy...just ask first o.o;
Also...if your a female crossplayer you still count as female, and vice versa ^^;
Just chiming in, hugs are great. ^^ I come to staff Fanime to help put on a good show, and it's really nice to feel appreciated. ^^
I live out-of-state in the middle of nowhere in a hyperreligious community where are hugs are hard to come by. >.<; Basically my time in the bay area is my chance to be with people who are a bit more like me -- especially at Fanime.
So if you come to the main theater to watch masq or something and see the guy with the long hair slaving away, feel free to come up and hug me. ^^ It doesn't matter if you're a guy or a girl, the human contact and affection is appreciated.
(Exceptions:
1. If it's 5 minutes before (or god forbid 5 minute after) the time a show is supposed to start and I look like I'm about to scream, it's probably because I'm fixing a last minute problem and need to concentrate. ^^;
2. As others said, please don't glomp if you are smelly. ^^; )
To be honest I think society has gotten so paranoid and scared recently that the lack of hugs is a serious problem. We live in a culture of fear now that the media spreads with hysteria for its own advertising dollar benefit.
People are so scared of eachother, but in truth crime has gone way down since the 70's. If people were more open back then, we can at least be that open now. =)
(My sis just started college and I'm amazed -- they lock the doors to her dorm 24/7, and the BATHROOMS INSIDE THE DORM are locked 24/7 too... All in the name of "security". It's stupid and really hurts the sociability of the dorm -- people hide in their rooms, rather than leaving their doors open to talk to people.)
Anyway! Hugs == win. ^^

I agree. I love hugs and picture taking and sharing ideas, dreams and stuff. It's really great that we can go to places like Fanime to let loose and enjoy the company of other like-minded people. And I'm surprised at all the kids around here who don't seem to get any of that, even in their own homes! Yeah, I'm a parent, but I'm a kid too and we all like attention. So hugs from me to every one of you and I'll see you at the next Fanime!
Hugs are totally awesome, and it's awesome to get them from cool new people. My friends rarely hug me back much...most of the hugs I get are from my parents, which isn't really that awesome anymore. @.@
Meh. I'm not particularly worried about any dangerous stalkers, I know the people at Fanime are a LOT safe then the ones OUTSIDE of Fanime >.< Besides I think it'd be fun to have a little stalker to tease an hug ^_^
Post a picture if you wanna get hugged! I LOVE hugging! I've sorta made it the hallmark of my class ^^() now everyday, people either hug and/or glomp each other. We're such losers, we make hugging circles XD
I'm the glomping post -___- And apparently kissing too O__o
So...um...yeah! Perfectly fine with hugs~! :3
At the end of the con, I'll probably try that whole "running around and hugging most of the people b4 the con ends" thing again like I did for 06 8D

I've been a victim of some people's rampant glompeveryoneasap runs on my first convention. All I did was stand and stare blankly.
Good luck! Just try not to hurt anyone....
Unless I give you my permission (which is highly unlikely unless you are hot :shock: ) don't do it.
The best policy is to ask. And if the person says no, please leave them alone. I was asked several times by the same person last year, and frankly, it got annoying. Hugs are great and all, but I prefer to get them from people I know. :)
Hey whatsup last year 2006 fanime I was glomped by a female vash I was a tall edward elric (XD) felt special because evreyones all omg ed drank his milk inc rofl, I was very surprised as she just ran right up to me and glomped lol wondering if that vash is on this forum to say hey!
Yeah some people are a lot more open about stuff then others. Not everyone is crazy for glomps from the opposite sex like I am ^^;;
It's like to ask first, I alway ask if I can glomp someone unless they have a sig or something saying "YES GLOMP ME!!" XD
What I'll probably do is on my badge, I'll have a post-it note with the note "Yes, I'm glompable!!!"

That's not a bad idea. Only I think I'd do the opposite.
"No Touchy Please! I kick!"
I've been fondled and molested by strangers on the subway here in Montreal, and now I'm -really- uncomfortable being touched affectionately by people I'm not very familiar with. Even like, good but not super-close friends, it squicks me out when they hug me or lean on me on the sofa or whatever.
Hug me! I will be the tall Jiraiya walking around. Muhahahahahahaha
