The site:

Well, anyway, I'm considering going to the event, just for the heck of it. I asked Dr. O for a second opinion. Heres what he said:

Quote from: "Otakuappreantice"*if you are good enough, and if you can get to EVO, then go.

But which one should I go to?
The L.A. one, or the Las Vegas one?
Here is a good article on how to get to the Vegas part:

http://shoryuken.com/?p=103#more-103

Other than that, what do you think?

Quoteooh...evo...i wanna go to! one of these days, when i think my GGXX game is finally up to snuff, i'll hit evo.

I think they will have GG Slash this year, do you like that one? Here you go:

http://www.evo2k.com/tournament/games/ggxx.php

http://www.evo2k.com/finals/

The finals in Las Vegas will be on August 24-26th.

EDIT:I looked around the Shoryuken forums, to learnd why GG is a team tourney, and not singles. Some arguements I've read are:

-Some say teams take shorter than singles (I don't get it)
-Something about making sure the Japanese players DON'T dominate the finals and what-not.

I found the GG rules:

Guilty Gear XX Slash Team Tournament

* Game version: Japanese Playstation 2
* #Reloaded characters, Kliff and Justice are not allowed in tournament play
* Use of EX, Gold and Shadow characters are not allowed in tournament play
* Each character can only be used once in a team of 3 (e.g. two players cannot both play Sol).
* Each player in the tournament must stick with their character of choice for the entire duration of the tournament.
* Each match begins with 1 player from each team playing against each other. The winner of that game remains at the console while the loser must leave and allow another member of his team to play. Once a player has lost, he may not play again. In this manner, the first team to accumulate 3 win (defeating all 3 members of their opponent's team), is declared the winner.
* Teams may choose which order their team members will fight. This decision does not need to be made in advance.
* At the beginning of a match, the winner of a coin flip will be given to option of choosing which side they would like to play on (P1 or P2) or whether they would like to choose their first team member to play second.

Hope that helps.

Double post. I wanted to add something about SSB Melee. Its the rules, but I'm guessing they are not completely final yet. Here they are:

http://www.evo2k.com/playerGuide/gamerules.php

Super Smash Brothers Melee

*  Game version: Nintendo Gamecube
* Game Settings: VS Melee, 2/3 Games, 4 Stock, 6 Minute Timer, No Items
* The stage for game 1 will be selected at random unless both teams can agree on a stage.
* No stage may be used twice in a versus battle.
* After the stage has been selected, the winner of the previous game may change characters, but has to pick first.
* Glitches used to stop your opponent from controlling their character or indefinitely freezing them (Mewtwo's Soul Stunner, the Ice Climber freeze glitch), or any glitch or trick that freezes the game or makes it unable to be finished are banned and will result in the immediate forfeit of the entire match.
* Tactics such as Peach's Wallbombing and Jiggly's Rising Pound are allowed as methods of recovery or to maneuver around the stage. Using them (or any similar tactics) to excessively stall a match, such as dropping below levels intentionally and stalling underneath, is banned. If by using one of these tactics, you have put your character in a place to lose a stock by ending the tactic, a judge may force you to stop and lose a life and continue the match short a stock.

Those sound pretty similar to Asa's rules for his lobby tourney thing.

I plan on going to EVO next year. Need to really kick up my 3rd Strike game a hell of a lot. I need to get a copy of the game, and practice a lot. The only time I get is when I go to SVGL. I need more practice for EVO.

I love support for evo and everythihg(since i've been in this scene for a decade now and have supported it full force),

but here's a little bit of advice. Most people overestimate themselves in games... a lot.

Here's some examples of things that should help in first recognizing if you're even close to being tournament wother for different games.

MvC2:You play the big9... you can block magneto mixups well, you know what a battery character, point, and 3rd characters are and why they are called the such. You can do all guard crush setups and you know timings for when and why to push block specifically to get out of different setups and lock downs.

CvS2: You can roll cancel atleast 90% of the time you attempt it(unless you're playing K). You know zoning and footsies really well.

3S: you can hit confirm, you know what charge partitioning is, you can parry decently well(as in opponent does a block string with ken such as... c.short c.short c.strong s.rh) and you know the c.strong or s.rh is coming and can parry it. You can beat a turtle chun by rushing her down...

I'd add more for other games, but that's not the point. I suggest a lot of people that are thinking of going to EVO to play, to d/l tournament videos and study them, and completely understand what's happening. Understand why RX's double mk.tackle into headbutt is hard. Know that one command grab with Makoto means you lose a round. Know how to get around RC Honda in CVS etc.

I support people coming, but as a player, it's not worth it to waste 30$+ on entry fee if you're not even close to competition videos. There's plenty of videos on youtube, or on websites you can find links from on shoryuken.com. Come though to watch. It's an amazing experience to see the world's best going at it at fighting games, and see how these games were intended to be(and many times surpassing) played.

About the team tournament for GG. Time is a major factor at EVO since you have up to 200 competitors, it can take upwards to 20 hours to do some games. So for guilty gear having teams shortens this. Teams will have 3 a team so two teams will have a maximum of 5 games between them instead of indiviuals you would have 6 players having to go round robin which would take 15 games minimum.

Japan is far superior than the US in guilty gear. We don't even come closed. For the most part only "good" players from Japan come for GUilty Gear, their top demolish our best easilly.

Advice though, study videos, and if you can't follow the subtleties that happen then chances are you're not ready to compete.

Here are the full results for EVO south:

http://www.evo2k.com/south/

QuoteCongratulations to the Evo South qualifiers! The winners in these tournaments automatically qualify for a semi-final berth at the Evolution 2007 World Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada this August.
Marvel vs Capcom 2
1st place   Chris Creecy
2nd place   Gene Flowers
3rd place   Golden Nismor
4th place   Brad Carney

Super Street Fighter II: Turbo
1st place   John Choi
2nd place   Campbell Tran
3rd place   David Hem
4th place   Lang Nguyen

Super Smash Brothers Melee
1st place   Rob Wright
2nd place   Caveman
3rd place   DarknessofHeart
4th place   Xzalla

Those are three of the eight games.
Some questions:
I'm considering using a camcorder to record matches at EVO.
Will I need permission to do so?
If so, how will I get that permission?
Title: EVO2K7:EVO WORLD results!
Post by: SohmaYuki on March 14, 2007, 04:06:10 PM
You can record matches and stuff via camcorder, I'm not sure about the regionals, but for EVO itself, you cannot post the videos online.

EVO sells DVD"s of all the matches, so posting up videos will deter people from buying(It can advertise but it's unsanctioned). If it'sfor personal use though, by all means, record show your friends... the fighting game scene has been slow lately, more new faces would be nice. You guys are near SVGL which is sad, because there aren't a lot of 3S players up there. You guys have the best CvS2 players in the US though... and no one plays marvel up there.

I never followed Smash Bros. as I never found it my type of game.
Title: EVO2K7:EVO WORLD results!
Post by: Asa_Gohan on March 14, 2007, 07:04:26 PM
many think of it as slow  but its really very fast paced.  Ive been in matches were noobs come up asking if were playing in lightning melee. But not like...GG fast...No way faster.  Though it can get that fast if it was like Fox vs Fox on Yoshi's Story. Small stage+Two fast characters= lots of action but yeah...

You see, the problem here is that they're emphasizing Smash Bros. on the same level as Guilty Gear and 3rd strike.   (I'm expecting flame here.)

I say this as a Smash player myself, not a traditional 2d fighter fanboy or something. That doesn't mean I don't think its a good game, I think it's great. I just think the game is too limiting and to unbalanced. I hope that Nintendo takes this into account when producing Brawl.
Title: EVO2K7:EVO WORLD results!
Post by: Asa_Gohan on March 15, 2007, 01:44:24 PM
well theyre only doing it so they could get more customers. GG and 3rd strike has a less wider audience players then SSBM cause SSBM is easy to pick up. Though the learning curve is very very high. And unlike other fighting games it isnt about button combination but on how you pull them off. And every character in SSBM can beat every other character and unlike most fighting games they dont have infinites except for 1 character. But unlike other fighting games this has to be pulled off 4 times in a row to pull off a match while in other fighting games, you just have to pull it off once, or twice if its GG to reset the damage, in order to win the match. In addition with a character they have their advantages and disadvantages. And by the way unlike GG and blah vs blah they have made many many more fighting games. Should take into account that SSBM is old and is the second game.  And I have to say that it has improved a whole lot.

imo, you cant really compare two games that are on totally different levels. its like saying oranges are better than apples because they dont have the "zing" of an orange.

as for slash's balance...it could be better. then again it could be worse...(d-loop turned into sw-loop)

Loops don't make characters unbalanced. Everyone has good loops. None of the characters in GG#R nor Slash are unbalanced. Eddie and Slayer were both top in #R but weren't broken by any means, Slash Eddie got nerfed a lot. Other characters all got better.

Accent Core plays retardedly though.

Sol was at best High-mid in any of the guilty gears.

hypothetically, slayer's bite loop can pretty much be used with no opportunity to tech out or escape, given that the burst gauge isn't full. it's loops like that which, imo, "break" characters like slayer

Post by: SohmaYuki on March 17, 2007, 01:00:05 AM
Bite loop was only in Igzechs, not in #Reload. It's possible to mash out unless the persons execution on the otherside is near perfect(3 frame leway). Of course, if you can't mash out, then that's your problem(but that's like calling King broken because you can't tech out of chain throws).

In #R it was way easier to mash out so it was only used in repetitions of 3 at most to gain back a little bit of life and add slightly to dizzy meter. But just so you know, even at EVO no US player was able to do bit loop in a real match of Igzechs.

Slayer invincible jc. qcf+P is more annoying than bite loop.

Anyway, I just learned that EVO West (http://www.evo2k.com/west/) will be in San Diego, in the Omni Hotel during San Diego Comic Con (http://www.comic-con.org/) . Heres a quote from the SRK forums:

Quote from: "Mr Wizard from SRK"We are proud to announce that Evo West will be held in San Diego, CA during the San Diego Comic Con.

It will be located at the Omni hotel across the street (Which is sold out, you need to find your own hotel at the best possible price)

This event will rival Evo South as a all free event (But you will need a badge into the Comic Con to participate, dont buy a badge just yet, we might have a deal)

Hope to see you all there.

WOW! Better start planning.
Any thoughts?

I don't think I can make it due to poor planning and lack of funds on my behalf. Atleast I'll turn 21 next year, so it will easier for me.

I just got back from EVO, tired.

Tournament didnt' have too many upsets(imo) or anything strange happening outside of... Japanese team getting beat by JuicyG's in prelims of GGXX:AC, uh... Random Makoto player form NorCal(who I almost beat in pools) making top 5...

Rest went as I thought it would.

Made 140$ on sidebets on games, woulda been more but I missed out on a few I wanted to bet on. Smash was pretty retarded to watch, the only fun part was me and Marneto betting on crap and screaming random shit while they played the finals. I made 30$ on that.

Played a bunch of Vampire Savior, and A3 with Sabre and company. THat was amusing shit.

Dunno, everything else is same 'ol to me.

I should make explicit that what follows isn't official. The roughly outline of EVO's schedule can be found here.

I can update this post as news unfolds. Please abstain from dick-ish behavior (like false reporting) in this thread, some of us actually care. Support and praise for local players are welcome.

EVO live stream, courtesy of Ponder (one of the Super Cannon Bros.), found originally from this thread. Quality is so-so (in contrast to what SBO had), but it kicks ass none the less. The service can allegedly handle a huge amount of traffic. I'm sure this weekend will put it to the test. The stream is off, but all streams from this weekend are cached for later viewing.

- Yosuke takes 3rd in VF!!!
- No NW talent in the ST top 8.
- Nate "XTG" Montes made it out of his ST pool in the loser's bracket but fell shy of the top 8.
- Pablo_the_Mex Basilio peaced out of ST by Tom Cannon. Seattle pride either way, since the Cannon Bros. used to live around here.
- Alex "umbrellastyle" Kelly is out of ST.
- Joshua "JTM" Ray in top 32 for Tekken.
- Sam "Hebrew Hammer" Yatchmenoff out of 3s.
- Look at Marvel. This is what happens when Seattle doesn't attend. What happened to Chunk? And yes, all of Team Beast Coast for the 5v5 made top 8.
- Josh "JTM" Ray over TomHilfiger 10-2 in a Tekken mm.
- Marvel looks REALLY choppy in the feed.
-I think Preppy was on the big screen at -16:00 of the second MvC2 pool block footage. Might've been Ranma though, since he also uses that team periodically.
- Duc Jr. loses game 1 badly to Demon Hyo, then resets game 2 before getting perfected at the very end of (roughly -3:00) Part 4 of the MvC2 Friday footage.
- Duc Jr. 10-6 over JWong's low tier team of Jill, Ruby Heart, Ken.
- Valle over JWong in 3s pools.
- JWong over John Choi in the 5 game exhibition:
Choi wins A2 3-0
Wong wins MvC2 3-0
Choi wins ST 3-1
Wong wins 3S 3-1
Wong wins CvS2 3-2

Credit mostly to Deezo, but also harvested from various threads and IRC. Again, NOT official results here. Nate, Alex, Pablo, Julien, SamY, and Josh, good luck.
Some MvC2 MM updates a la Preppy from the EVO results thread:

Other things need to be added to that, like Hsien beats Amir 10-9, Arlieth wins Melty Blood Singles tourney, Duc Jr./DarkPrince REFUSES to play Justin for money if Justin uses his real team with 20/1 odds.

Bunch more crap too.

He raped Valle, but it's sorta unfair. T.Hawk stage on Collections has weird slowdown issues, you can see Valle throw like 5 s.RH's that were supposed to be tigers and crap. Same with Nuki vs. Choi. Gief stage has weird speed up issues, so Vega rapes on that stage.

i was wondering what that whole deal with the t. hawk/gief stage rule when i was going through the rule list on the website. care to clarify?

There's a lot of issues on different stages in Classics version of ST.

Because of bad emulation sound/animation on some stages causes the speed to change.

Gief stage runs too quickly, so a character like Balrog(Claw) has a huge advantage because the game runs faster than normal, and his already retarded fast wall dive becomes faster. On a different stage like, T.Hawk or Fei Long, the game has a slowdown issue. Sounds lag, so the game lags in return. Moves need to be done slightly slower otherwise the motion doesn't fully register and moves don't come out, and timing on links will be a split second slower.

It's not very apparent, but when you're trying to link moves that are 2-3 frames, that lag will make you press it too early causing moves to not come out, or on Gief's stage, too late causing it to be easilly blocked.

I'm too lazy to write a list of which stages have which actions, but there's only about 4 playable stages, about half have a lag issue, and about 3 have a speed up issue.

Oh hey what's up. You can buy the DVD's now, if anyone HASN'T bought them, and not related SBO DVDs are on sale too. I watched Melty which was pretty dope.

Evo was cool for me (Little late?) Got some money in ST, lost some in CvS2, Running the brackets for Melty Blood, while running back to ST, then running back to run brackets, then going back for ST, to eventually lose to a Sim player with Noggie Train. I fell asleep when the Japanese players came to the room I was sleeping in, (at that moment) woke up to see them leave. I wanted to get some CvS2 with them but oh well. I think the funniest thing I saw was either Mago really really wasted, or Mint hitting on Jaime (GG^C Testament player.)
