I know I'll probably be volunteering (maybe staffing) next year, and this'll only be my 2nd Fanime (the first being this year)...
What about you? Are you looking forward to staffing or volunteering at FanimeCon 2008?

Sure! It'll be like.... my 10th year or something :P
I'm thinking about staffing but it'd be sooo much to do while I'm still going to college and working two jobs and doing other events....
I'm staffing, yet again for Registration. ^^
Funfun.
I'll volunteer, for uh, something. Dunno yet.
E-gaming or VP
woot
cant wait for next year
Had fun volunteering this year. I would love to either staff or volunteer next year.

Oh it's definitely doable. But how much sleep are you willing to lose?
My last year in college was the first year I headed a department (did I mention it was my first official year as staff for Fanime? o.O ). In addition to learning a new department, I took 15 units, did a psych internship, had regular requirements for my co-ed fraternity, went to all the pledge events for my frat and volunteered at the school's LGBTRC every week.
I averaged about 6 hours of sleep a day, so it wasn't that bad!
ROVERS ALL THE WAY!!!
HO YEAH!!!

Wooooooow..... That's pretty, impressive....
I think I might if I'm not busy saving money for my next year Japan trip.
It's a problem of driving to the bay area for anything. It eats up half a tank just to go to Dublin and back @_@
Most likely...
Rovers = WIN!
Or if not, I might give Artist Pool another shot.
I'm in for next year!
Everyone loves the BOUNCERS!! 8) 8) 8)

You should be able to find a staffer that lives near you so that you can car pool. It's not too important to attend all of the staff meetings too. In fact, I've only attended 2 staff meetings in my past 3 years as staff.
I'd be willing to work next year. :)

Note: What Sen says depends on your department and division head. Some of them like their staff to attend regularly, while some don't mind if they only make one or two a year. =)
Rovers ftw.
It's a super fun job... if I'm not in Japan, I'm doing it again.
thursday volunteers wassup?

Oops forgot..it's true. Thanks MPLe :D
Most of the Elevator Ninjas want to.
Someone needs to protect all needs of transportation. :3
Rovers is always looking for new people. Two to one, you'll have fun, you'll meet cool people, and by the end of Fanime, nearly everyone that you work with in Fanime will be a good friend that you'll keep in touch with afterwards...
registration again. =)
I want to try it this year, but I haven't decided what department.
I plan on participating in staff this year, probably volunteers, and I've talked with the head about it. Still, we'll all have to wait til January to sign up. XP
Other departments look cool too. *eyes wistfully* I don't think I'll have time to do anything else though.
I'll probably just kick back this year and enjoy the con. Last time I volunteered for anything Fanime-related, I didn't really get anything out of it.
Go Rovers! x3 (Although we're changing the name of the department >_<)
Rovers, again... or whatever the ultimate new name for our department be....
Oh. I think I'm interested in staffing or volunteering this time. I guess I'll go to the staff meeting on the 10th to check it out. Anyone coming from east bay? Oh also, what are the available departments?
Edit: Oh is it too late to sign up for staffing?
It's not too late because there are still departments looking for staff. Just scroll through the forum to see who's posted listings, or you can even email your desired department if you need any more information.
no its not to late at all its just that the staff forums and stuff isn't up since the guy who does it retired (i guess you would say) from the possition
^^ Many departments are still looking for staff; many keep looking all the way up to perhaps a month before Fanime. It just depends on the departments themselves. If you're looking at a specific department, you can just e-mail the head and ask them if you can join along with any questions and whatever. :3
Or go to a meeting and track down the head of the department and ask. Usually they say yes fairly quickly.
[As vhg said ^^.]
So I've been reading all about these Rovers/volunteers (Or what ever the new name is. Maybe I missed it), and I'm considering volunteering this year. Mind you the last time I volunteered at a convention I was worked like a dog from midnight to 3am the day before the con even started, and then was roused out of bed about 7:30am to go help set up the various rooms. I tell you getting less then 6 hours of sleep to go and pull out metal stands and boards to set up a art display room sucks. Then there was the line control, the general finding people you didn't even know to deliver messages, and playing impromptu security, before you even had lunch was just terrible. It was pretty much a, "You look like you can carry alot, come here and move these TVs, cases and tables." Mind you I got all the needed hours the very first night of con, as they did double hours that night. So I got something like 28 hours that day, and I only needed 24 to get my Reg back.
I'm taking it that Fanime isn't that hard on their volunteers, right?
Would folks who volunteered in earlier years say it was easy to do their jobs, and still hit things up during con and enjoy themselves?
Thanks for any feed back.
Ta,
~Juls
Moondancer- From what I heard from being a volunteer, you can ask and see which departments would need you. You don't have to work as crazy-like... and I think the requirement is [16 hours] (totally not sure, you might have to ask Volunteer's head >.>). But it's more lax than some staff positions... and instead of joining Rovers (which I assumed you did), you can try a different department instead of something that makes you do odd-end roving-like jobs.
from experience in being a volunteer last year, its not that bad.
last years requirement to pay off a full weekend pass was 20 hours, and im pretty sure it'll stay like that for '08. i worked off all my hours over the first three days of the con(i would've done it in two, but two 10-hour-shifts back-to-back would have been literally overkill)
i had oddles of fun with it(friday night i used a foreign accent my whole shift, saturday was cool, and sunday night was the best, and created an idea for this years con).
you can pick where you wanna be, too. more info will probably be posted the closer we get to con-time.

BTW I also remember in previous years that you could get double credit for certain types of work, for example working before con to help set up.
If you've read Harry Potter you know that the Defense Against Dark Arts class at Hogwarts school of Magic goes through a new instructor every year. The volunteer dept. at Fanime is like the same. Okay so maybe that's exaggerated. We literally do not have volunteer coordinators dropping out every year (the average is 2 years)...however everytime a new coordinator steps in, the rules change a little. I'm not sure if the person doing it this year is the same as last. Is it going to be 16 hr or 20 hr? Too early to tell for sure.
I'm looking forward into volunteering in the maid cafe. I've been attending Fanime for so long, I like to be a part of it. I heard the maid cafe needs some maids at the moment.
I'm to tired to look right now, or just to lazy, but can you still volunteer after you Reg?

Yep. You can sigh up to volunteer during the Con. :3 Just go to the volunteer booth. ^^
I might try Registration. It only goes on during the day, and I generally am very bored and not interested in anything during the day. As long as MusicFest is at night, I'm good with it. D:

:3 Yay!
this is my first fanime, but some of my friends have gone before and their siblings have volunteered in the past.
is DJing invloved? if so, id like to be invloved
I think that question would go directed to the head of some department... depending on which event you'd like to DJ for. However, I don't think that normal volunteering people would be allowed to DJ unless you had a prior talk with whoever is running the event.
Go and e-mail the fit head for that question. :3 (normally, heads and staff don't really look at the websites regularly. )
But volunteering generally involves line control, security, and doing random little things for other departments.
I just considered applying for musicfest, but all my friends strongly disapproved since they wanted me with them at MusicFest, and not off running errands. So I guess I'll stick with Reg. But um... To apply, should I email
[email protected], or is there some other kind of channel I should do it through. The staff site ain't up yet.
Long- Well, you can e-mail them, but the way to apply would just be through the staff website.. once it's up, of course. :3 But feel free to inform the head that you're interested. Or come to one of the staff meetings if you want. ^^ Antonio is awesome.
I am going to try to volunteer.

I'm pretty sure DJing would be staff and not so much as volunteers. You're best bet is to drop an e-mail to
[email protected] and run it through them.
i volunteered last year, but i burned myself out so quickly, I'll skip volunteering this year.
How does one go about volunteering anyway? Just drop by ConOps and see where you're needed?

How does one get an invitation from the department to join as a staff member?
I sent an e-mail to
[email protected], but maybe I should be sending it directly to someone. I don't know. xP Who is the head of the Registration department and what is their contact info?
The Registration's head's name is Antonio. According to this (http://www.fanime.com/staff/how-to-join), you have to wait like, 2-3 weeks... or you can severely bother Eric Wu's Fanime account asking for an invite from Antonio. :D If you do, make sure you address him as "Mr. Snugglycutiepoo".
Antonio's e-mail is antonio at fanime.com if my memory serves me right. ^^;;

Ah thanks. I sent Mr. Antonio an e-mail just in case, because I'm pretty sure the
[email protected] email is probably being bombarded right now with registration issues from con-goers. xP
You know what? We don't have 2-3 weeks. Dx Fanime is this month. Why did the Staff site have to come up so late. xP
:0 I.T. issues, I guess.
But uh, the staff list has closed, no one can join now. Eric says you can join through volunteering, but you'll have to go through the same process as volunteers.

;______;
Um. Do I have to do something to sign up for volunteering before the con? Or does one sign up during the con.
I think I was misinformed for staffing which is why I was too late for it, because I thought, and I guess so did others, that the staff sign up process was going to work the same way as last time where you apply on the site itself, and not email someone beforehand. xP
But whatever, volunteering might be fine. If I have enough money by then. Hopefully. .____.;
D: Yeah, I thought that way worked better, but oh well. To volunteer, you'll have to sign up during the con.
(tip: if you don't have the at-con price for the whole weekend, just apply for that day and get reimbursed every day... the most you'd need by then would be $30)

Now is cool, but you should remind your department head sometime later in the year.
Well, I haven't staffed before, so at the moment I have no department head. (Have dept heads even been selected for next year?)

Um, so maybe now is a little early, come to think of it. If you can come to a staff meeting, that's the best way to join staff.
I heard that department heads are selected way before the next Fanime. Fanime should already know who the heads are (but sometimes difficulties happen. :00 )
It's over! Thanks to everyone who volunteered or staffed this year!
But feel free to inquire about volunteering/staffing for 2009.
