If you travel or stay in hotels, you have to watch this. I'm not sure if the Fanime Hotel rooms will have glasses, but if they do, you may want to consider not using them in the near future.

If you want to worry about that you might as well inform everyone never to use the comforters either.
From what I've been told, general policy is to clean them in the laundry about once every 6 months or so, unless it has visible stains.

Eeewww.. That's gross too.
Not suprised, but it's rather bias'ed.
The same can be said about almost anything anywhere. Many restaurants are that different in terms of just glasses or silverware, or plates etc.
But then you look at other things. How often does a bus clean its interior. How often are gas station pumps really sanitized, public bathrooms, anything at Bart. The sheets and blankets aren't cleaned very well at all, but neither are the majority of the things at any store. Any of you ever work a retail job and share stories about how "well the store was cleaned"? Chances are the things you pick up on shelves to read, receipts, counter tops, etc. never get really sanitized other than a spray down of some surface cleaner.
People are overly paranoid because of the *CHANCE* of getting something. But the chances are extremely low, and in most cases it's visible if something is that dirty. In which case the glass WOULD be taken and replaced and put in a dishwasher(if there were stains or other things).
Here, I'll use a fun one. The ketchup dispenser at McDonalds, the napkin dispenser, the straw dispenser, and sauce bottles. You think those are sanitized... or... even ever replaced? That sauce bottle has just been refilled over and over and over and over again for the past some odd 3 years. It was hillarious one time when I saw a sauce bottle at a restaurant with an over due date of about 2 1/2 years because they just use the bottle and refill it constantly.
If you're going to go with odds, the chances of you getting something from drinking from a hotel glass(that you can clean yourself) is about as likely as you getting something equally as bad by going out to a restaurant and eating. Odds are on my side, so I don't mind it.
Uhg Think about those self service drink cells / ice dispensers at fast food places, and convenience stores. Doesn't matter if they are cleaned daily, they're still exposed to who knows what thru-out the day. Never mind the cups and lids out in the open too.
Meh. I wash out my drinking mug at work even though I've only left it overnight. We've got some 'dust' floating down from the ceiling due to construction, but I'm overly cautious. I wash my hands every half hour or something like that.
But I figure whatever doesn't kill me, makes me stronger. I'll build up an immunity sooner or later ... :P

Just fill them full of alcohol: sanitizing and yummy! ;)
Hmm.. rinsing them then drying them with dirty bath towels? That's far more than an acceptable risk. You don't put your mouth on napkin, straw, or ice dispensers - you put your mouth on something that's touched someone else's dirty bath towel! I think I'll be paying $3 for a bunch of plastic cups for me and my roommates this con, ugh
To play the devil's advocate here, these shows make their money on sensationalism, of course they're only going to show you the gross bits. It's entirely possible the glasses are throroughly washed between guests, it's common practice to not clean quite as carefully when you know the same group of people is going to be in the room later. The cameras never stayed in the rooms between bookings.
Furthermore, there are plenty of other hotel chains they never even mentioned, namely ones like the Marriott, Hilton, and other con hotels. It's possible they stayed there too and were foiled by proper sanitation practices.
That being said, I think I'm still going to stick to drinking from my water bottle for a while ><''

I hope you wash it every day! Imagine all that backwashed water, just sitting there, bacteria from your mouth happily growing for hours and hours in the container... ;D
I do, actually! I tend to put flavoured powders in my water, so I wash it out when I'm done. :)
Also, I usually drink from a straw, since it's got a fairly wide mouth and makes a big drippy mess if I just pour it into my mouth.

*stares at monitor for a long time*
"damn!"
Well to be fair the blue liquid was a generic glass cleaner similar to windex, and the clear was *probably* diluted bleach water, or soapy water. The windex cleaning I wouldn't trust, it's not going to kill you, but its not very sanitary either. The bleach water (assuming it was a water/bleach mixture it's entirely possible it was just water) is actually very sanitary. Bleach kills *everything* and a bleach water rinse is standard cleaning procedure for restaurants that don't have a dish washer/sanitizer.

but im just gonna keep thinking happy/pleasant thoughts. :)
Come to think of it, I had a friend pick up a case of mono at Anime Expo a few years back... We teased her mercilessly for a while, implying it was someone she'd roomed with (we had a bunch of rooms, she wasn't in the same room I was). Now I'm wondering if it was from a glass. The hotel (not a con hotel, something close by) was.. not the cleanest I'd ever stayed in. There was this hideous oily film in the hot tub too, that was pretty gross.

I totally agree. You're going to a con with +10,000 people there. Chances are, if you're going to get sick, it's going to because you're in a small area with tons of people rather than from a hotel glass. How many people are pushing the buttons on the elevator, sitting in the chairs in the viewing rooms, picking up DVDs and manga in the dealers room, touching the joysick and buttons in the gaming room? You're far more likely to get sick just from breating the air in the convention center than drinking from a glass.

Good idea, I bring some myself.
I know I'm bringing my own plastic cups and Febreeze in the room. To drink the hotel's cup is nothing worse than sleeping on the bed if it's decently clean.

also thanks for the tip about the Glass, that really explains why i felt ill!!!
Bottled water (the ones you bring in) FTW!
I know I'm getting like 3 cases of water bottle ($2.98 each at my work place) plus a case of soda for caffeine. XD Plus Granola bars for breakfast and snacks is good. I know my friend and I will be driving to Mitsuwa to stock up on some good Japanese food and drinks. Luckily, it's only about 10 - 15 minutes away drive.
XD I'm the planner in my group so I'm quite well prepare.
Anyone bringing a ton of bottled water...please save your bottles and recycle them! Otherwise you should bring a water bottle and refill it from the tap. Using all those bottles is really wasteful. :-[

Oh, that's total BS. I use antibacterial soap and hand sanitizers all the time and I've never had any problems.
I don't use those, because I've got very sensitive skin and they cause my hands to crack and bleed because of the alcohol.
A good strong soap and hot water do a great job of cleaning. The sanitizers can work in a pinch, but if you're staying in a hotel you should have access to hot water and a bar of soap.

AS for water, I choose something else!!! i sorta bought those water bottles that are bio-degradable!!!! ALL HAIL CORN PLASTIC XD!!!!!!!!
I never touch those, I usually bring bottle of water or soda with me when I'm at the Hotel.
omg people it isnt gonna kill ya. peole get so freaked out by things like this.
WoW!!!!!!!!! I never think about it. :o
Definately bring your own glasses...I usually bring shot glasses with me (for my mini bar)...lol...I also bring my own pillow cases, cause pillow cases to me are gross....as well as lysol and disenfectant wipes..lol :o
GREAT NOW AM EVEN MORE PARANOID! DAMMIT!
I'm bringing Dixie cups!
I cannot view the video-thingy! ;.;
However, why not just bring your own disposable cups or drink bottles?
Or, wash them out yourselves with hot water from the sink, or boiled water from the coffee pot. That should disinfect anything, right?
just wash the cup before you use it, then get drunk. simple.
Hot water and soap, period. Washes everything clean, from skin to glasses.
Doesn't apply to hotel ice though?
This reminds me of several years back where, post con, me and several other people all came down with the same kind of cold. It only lasted for a few days, but post-fanime illness. Kinda sucks.

You have a good point, but these aren't things that usually have direct contact with our orifices, thus lack of germ exposure. However, glasses contain saliva and who knows what else.
Yay, influenza :D
I'm not too much a germaphobe I suppose I'm really not going to worry about it. I bring my own drinks anyway

No, it doesn't. It really, REALLY doesn't. That is circumstantial evidence at the very VERY best. Allow me to draw you a paralell.
Imagine you went to New York, and saw a billboard there. Then, afterwards, someone tells you "Did you know that billboards in New York are sometimes put up by FAIRIES?!" So now you're saying "Well, I *did* see a billboard in New York. It must have also been put up by fairies!!"
There is absolutely no evidence that hotel room glasses have ever given anyone any sort of sickness at Fanime. Ever. None. Zero. Just because it is POSSIBLE that someone somewhere maybe at some time MIGHT have gotten or will get sick does not mean that it is something you need to worry about. Seriously, these are four star hotels. High quality establishments that are carefully regulated by the government and various public and private health organizations. If it were a significant health risk, they wouldn't be allowed to handle it the way they do. Come on, guys. This is the Hilton and the Marriott we're talking about, not some seedy dive in the red light district. You are much much MUCH more likely to get sick just by being at con with all those people than you are to get sick from a cup at one of those hotels. If you're seriously worried about that, I suggest never EVER going outside again, because you have a better chance of being abducted by aliens than you do getting sick from something like that.

Food dispensers are required to be emptied and sanitized at the end of each operational day (mcDs hygiene policy and requirement by County Health)... mcD's is a stickler for this and I've seen it from both points of view. In High school, McD's gave me my first steady job... worked there for 3 1/2-years. Unless you've worked the closing shift for one of their stores, you won't know what it's like to clean and sanitize
ALL of the food service equipment. 6-years later, out of college, I took a part-time job at a resturant hygiene company... I was a plain-clothed evaluator. I did several McDs while I was there and my 3+years experience trained me to spot when something wasn't done right, especially around the drink fountains.
I work as an Eng. Techie for a custom manufacturer now... And believe me, we can build almost anything. As for food service equipment, such as napkin and drink straw dispensers... They must be made out of industry standardized materials... Usually food grade stainless-steel or steel with chrome-plating. McD's started using Eco-friendly cardboard dispensers a while back, but it still must meet food safety requirements.
Micro-organisms cannot survive on surfaces without a media for them to live... Typically, food residue or biological waste. There's a good probability you won't find either food residue or biological waste inside the napkin or straw dispenser... If you do, just let the strore manager know.
Finally, as for condiment at the tables... I don't use them... I had an experience at IHOP once where some dumb@zz switched the contents of the sugar and salt. I ended up putting 2-spoons of salt into my coffee that morning... Anyone else out there know what that tastes like??? It got me thinking, the people at the table before me could have mixed something more serious in those containers and wouldn't have known... Now, I exercise due caution when I'm out and about.
I used a glass to rinse my mouth after brushing my teeth.
Am I going to die? O_O
