im wondering are signs banned at fanime or are they ok? do people actually hug/glomp you if you have a sign?
I don't know whether signs are banned or not, but people most certainly WILL glomp you if you wear a sign!!!!!!!
God damn it, why are there another one of these threads.
Signs were meant for people begging for attention. You got a sign? You got attention. It's that simple. It's up to you to judge whether or not that's a good thing, or something just ... really pathetic. Unless you're REAAAAALLY ugly, and below the standards of even con-goers, then it's absolutely certain that you'll get tons of hugs from strangers to fill your need for said attention. Though, you'll have to divide it with the hundreds of OTHER people with signs... which leads me to wonder why Fanime needs people with attention-whoring (for lack of a better word) signs, when really, isn't much of a glum place that calls for spreading ze love.
Though, they aren't banned... but strongly discouraged, for good reason.
It's bad enough that people make their own "Hug Me" signs, but what's really sick is when people mass-produce "Hug Me" signs and then give them out to the public to wear & display. At Sac-Con back in December, this dealer, selling the card/board game called "Ryvah" was having their booth-girls pass out FREE "Hug Me" signs, and the attendees were wearing them with their costumes or normal clothes. Here's an example:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/8145334@N06/2099647431/in/set-72157603417752228/
It's one thing to see a couple of people wear those signs, but to see LOTS of them walking around with those signs in one area, it's just wrong. And I recall seeing one kid take about 20 of those freebie-signs and tape them all over himself. :P
If this Ryvah dealer does the same thing at Fanime (so far they only tend to stay at the Sac-Cons) I hope Fanime staff does something to not let them distribute these signs else Fanime will be crawling with them.. >:(

Agreed. I'm tired of seeing them signs myself.
I don't know about you, but I work for my hugs. I also earn hugs from people willing to give hugs.

Sasuke cosplayers = open call for other naruto cosplayers to glomp you. i'm pretty sure at some point other people would want to take yaoi pictures so i suggest wearing padding. haha.
my friend's going to cosplay as sakura
so expect to be glomped by her:] with permission of course
i don't think a sasuke cosplay needs a sign.. it just sort of speaks for itself lol
ok this should be interesting for me.

i definitely agree on the more original signs some people have - there was an Ichigo cosplayer at the Bleach gathering last year who had a sign that said "I Hear Voices", which was pretty funny. but im totally over the glomp me/hug me signs - they were all over the place at the most recent SacAnime, and if that dealer EBK mentioned is going to be doing the same thing at Fanime, those signs are going to spread like a plague DX
If such a plague does break out like wildfire at Fanime, i suggest a meeting at the fountains to write up a petition for "Ban of mass produced and handed out hug/glomp me signs"

Some cons that have banned signs completely have staffers confiscate all signs that they find and put them on a wall or post-it section, which was pretty full by the end of the con. :D
Seriously, tho.. Someone should contact dealer-room Jason and ask him if the RYVAH dealer reserved any tables at Fanime this year, and if so, to contact them and ask them not to distribute any free "Hug Me" signs. I have nothing against the dealer, but I just don't think passing out "Hug Me" signs as a way to advertise your game/site is a smart thing..
who wants to hug/glomp Sasuke?

it depends, some fans are really daring. i absolutely love glomp/hug me signs, it distinguishes the people who want hugs/glomps. If you want to glomp them you don't have to ask (just give warning, oh god)
for first timers, if someone doesn't have a glomp/hug me sign, ASK. i met a girl last year- a real sweet lolita with nothing but good intentions, who ran to glomp a really awesome looking sephiroth (without asking) and broke a bit of his costume (which looked like he had worked pretty hard on).
don't get me wrong and not glomp, most con-goers (other than jun-chin) are really friendly, and love human contact and making new friends, just remember to ask if they don't ask you first ;)

Uh, sorry to break it to your girlfriend but... I'm not the only one not supporting idiotic behavior. If you need to randomly hug strangers to make friends, that's fine by me as long as THEY'RE okay with it; do it amongst yourselves. Just leave the other con-goers out of it. I don't need hyperactive teens (or creepy adults) running up to me to touch me and break my crap. As for signs, what are they really for... other than drawing attention to yourself to give an excuse to convince yourself that you're loved... by, uh, strangers.
But in general... I don't mind being glomped, to be honest... BY PEOPLE I KNOW. o_0

Creepy adults.. Yeah.. Next thing you know you have a bunch of creepy stalkers and harassment issues. Then you have to get security and more problems occur.
Much agreed with Jun, glomping is nice between friends..
this might have been said but you can get kicked out of the con for saying hugs for money or yaoi for money
becasue it counts as prostitution. i dont know if fanime is doing it this year but a con i went to a while ago required you to have your sign checked off by con ops so i duno
Its kind of annoying to see way too many people to wear Hug signs even though i wore one. I just hope people make there own better signs wit better catchphrases or sense of humor.

As if the con wasn't already crawling with signs...
I don't like the signs at all and I think they're a horribly tacky cry for attention. Last year there was a guy that pestered me for a hug everytime I walked past him. At another point I saw a dude wearing nothing but a baby blue speedo and a sign requesting hugs. It's one thing to ask someone dressed as your favorite character for a hug, but to just stand there begging for them like a bum on a street corner? C'mon, have some decency.
i might put a sign on the back of my shinigami cosplay saying that people can glomp me if they know my char.
Kissing? Now that crazy...if I even thought of doing something like that my girlfriend would kill me, bring me back to life and kill me again.

I think we should sum up the glomping signs arent so great to tote arround, in my opinon and like everyonelse its just a lame cry for attention.
Personally i think signs are only acceptable if you are doing a MMORPG cosplay like WoW or Ragnarok Online for example
and the whole free kisses thing thats pretty gross, Im sorry but sometimes someone might have like herpies or hep A and you dont know that sheet you might as well go kiss a dirty toilet, kisses by random strangers are gross
signs, random glomps and kisses are attention grabbers because maybe said person feels incompleate or is just plain stupid to not know common sense about asking first? who knows but yeah i agree with jun I only hug people I KNOW
=| i got a foot injury when I was at fanime 06 by some chick who full on glomped me and wore HEELS OF ALL THINGS Pointy ass things

You and many others' opinion... it IS a cry for attention, and in most cases, somewhat distasteful. But I don't understand your logic for the following...
QuotePersonally i think signs are only acceptable if you are doing a MMORPG cosplay like WoW or Ragnarok Online for example
What would make an MMO cosplay a universal exception? Really, it... makes no sense. Just because the cosplay is from an MMO, doesn't make a sign automatically part of the costume.

i think the only signs not aloud are the ones asking for munnies. plus people with no money shouldnt be at Fanime.
XD
ps. if i sounded harsh please forgive me.
You're telling them to make another thread, when one of their comments was, and I quote: "God damn it, why are there another one of these threads." He asked if they were banned, or were okay. You'll note again, that they said: "Though, they aren't banned... but strongly discouraged, for good reason."
There won't necessarily always be people with signs, I've read that other Cons have banned them, no reason Fanime can't do the same. It's also generally NOT the new people who come with signs, it's people who have seen others with them and decide they want to make one as well.
As to which signs are BANNED, any sign that can be considered prostitution. "Will Yaoi for Pocky" is an example. More or less, if you're trading yourself for anything, it's prostitution.
As for the "OR you could just get over it." No, no one has to. They are, more or less, bringing up discussion on the topic, and have every right to do so. Just as you have your opinions and are free to state them, so too do they have opinions and the right to voice them. As long as it's on-topic, not outright flaming, and not swearing up a storm, they have every right to post them.
I really find kissing random people quite extreme, hugs and no more.

Why do you assume *SHE* was mad about it? And no, what she said wasn't harsh, as it was pretty spot on. Having a negative opinion does not mean you're mad, or angry, or pissed, or anything.
Quoteif you dont like these kinds of things than why were you the first one to reply?
Because this is one of like 5 threads about the subject, and the answer to the question was contained in the other threads(I was the one that answered it actually).
Quoteif you dont like them than stop complainning all the kid asked was a simple question.. i dont think he wanted to hear your complaining.
Then he should have just read the other threads instead of making a new one. You seem to not want to allow people to voice their opinion just because you don't agree with it.
Quoteplus i've alwayas met nice people at fanime and your making fanime sounds pretty lame...
I've met plenty of nice people at fanime too. I've also met a lot of douches. I've also met a lot of nice people that were utter idiots who've annoyed the hell outta me despite being "nice". I've met a lot of douches that were extremely intelligent logical people who were only douches because they hate stupid people.
Quoteso make a thread to complain about you hate for Glomp me Signs and kiss me signs. OR you could just get over it.
There's already 5 threads about the subject... and why should she have to "just get over it" when it affects her and her well being? People use those signs as an excuse to harass other people. They hold a sign that says "free hugs" so they think it's alright to go up to a stranger and go "HUG ME!" and walk towards them with their arms open, getting in their way and sometimes forcefully hugging them. I've had a girlfriend at the time of mine, followed through the convention center and harassed by a guy with a sign trying to get her to hug him, and she didn't want to tell him off(I wasn't there at the time... and he's lucky). Despite her refusal, he still kept following her and harassing her.

There will always be idiots... you are right, doesn't mean people should accept it and be happy about it. I shouldn't have to compromise for people who can't follow basic social standards.
Quotelike i said before.. theres always going to be some one with a sign at a con... thats all i was stating.
and really i dont come on to the forums to see people complain... i guess you didnt read there other post but.. they pretty much hated on it and it gets kinda annouying..
And people like you get equally as annoying because you can't accept realities. People complain about crap that bothers them, and this is a legitimate thing to complain about. It has a very strong basis because it has to do with harassment and other such problems. On the other end of it, it's very self-destructive to crave attention through an outlet like that(but I'm not going to get into this big psychological reasoning that will go over the heads of many people, and I know you wouldn't be able to follow).
Apologizing and saying "Sorry if I sound harsh" doesn't rectify you saying stupid things.
"Sorry if I sound harsh, but I think you're an idiot and should die in a fire because I don't want to hear you complaining about a guy at the con stalking you, drugging and raping you in a bathroom and giving you aids".
See, how that doesn't rectify the rest of the statement?
.
My personal opinion about the whole Hug/Glomp issue.
Yeah its pretty understandable that Hug/Glomp signs are bit out of control and harrass other. I wouldn't want a guy chasing one of my group. All they had to do is ask for christ sake! I already get hugs and glomps even w/o the signs which I don't need too much of them anymore but I still sometimes wear them for fun.
I'm staying neutral about the whole sign things for couple reason: I like to wear and make them sometimes, banning signs is what I feel would take away the fun in the community, it can be still considered harrasment if they're not careful, I dislike stalkers going after one of my friends including my girlfriend (had to deal wit some freaks from myspace).
besides banning signs, what else have cons done about handling out of control glompers? besides being kind of annoying these threads have been the first time i've heard of "the glomping problem"
i dont know about a problem but i have seen people who will wear signs that say glomp and die
but yeah i have learned the hard way that you need to ask so i always do it now
so i think people should jsut ask unless they have the signs that say glomp me
On that note, I've actually seen shirts sold inside the dealers room that say "Glomp me and die" and the complete opposite. In this case, doesn't the shirt weigh equally with the sign? And if Fanime permits these shirts to be sold, what does this say about it?
Quote from: shinjiboy on February 06, 2008, 07:53:51 AM

OH wow... a legitimate post?
They are basically the same thing, but that's the issue. Fanime doesn't want to remove things completely. They don't mind if people carry signs and stuff because sometimes they do have a purpose. Some signs for gatherings and meet up points, and stuff like that. It's not so much the sign, but the actions of those with the sign. For the most part, although they portray the same message, they're different in minimal ways.
A sign has more emphasis because it was hand made, causing the person to have more attachment and meaning in what it says. A shirt however, is just a purchased good, with a message... which message should not be taken literally ever just because it's on a shirt. Otherwise how many people would be insane, or "With Stupid" or whatever other kinds of shirts there are out there. It's just apparel that has writing on it, it's not necessarilly the literal sentiments of the wearer. However, when someone makes a sign, they write down exactly what their sentiments are. Thusly, they usually act on them. They go that... extra mile.
Sure some people will buy the shirt and point at it like a sign, but it's still has a much smaller effect. Compared to say, someone that makes their own shirt.

On that note, I've actually seen shirts sold inside the dealers room that say "Glomp me and die" and the complete opposite. In this case, doesn't the shirt weigh equally with the sign? And if Fanime permits these shirts to be sold, what does this say about it?
OH wow... a legitimate post?
Compared to say, someone that makes their own shirt.
or writes it on their somach in red sharpie
As I said in the thread in General...
Signs are officially banned. See thread in general section for more infos.

ahahahaha....point spikes, pun.....
sorry -_-
IMO, glomps are scary. Hugs from strangers are awkward, but if youre into that sort of thing, go for it. As long you dont make people pay a certain fine or fee for anything that deals with bodily contact, its somewhat consider as prostitution. XD
Shouldn't this topic be closed since signs are banned and there is already a thread about their ban?

I know that about the hug/glomp thing. I going off topic but do you it ok to bring a sign for the con. It parted my costume because I am Risembool Rangers mascot look for the leader. The sign will said " Were is furher Vic Mignogna ?" on one side of the sign and the other side would said "Have seen this guy? He about 5'10 and have blonde hair with hazel eye." with picture of the voice actor picture.

Weren't you directed to the other thread
twice?
...Here. (http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,8788.0.html)
If it's from the anime and part of the costume, it should be fine-- but it has to be actually RELATED in that way. I don't mean a sign that says something in character. I mean... RELATED as in, actually IN the series and USED in the series by the character you're cosplaying.
And if it's a normal sign... it wouldn't make a difference if it was on your shirt. That shouldn't even be even thought of as a loop-hole around "Signs are
banned." Period. If it's print on your shirt, it's probably okay-- like, manufactured. If you WROTE it on your shirt, then you're getting a *facepalm* from staff and patrons against signs in the first place by trying SO HARD to find a loop-hole around something people were trying to
get rid of. Stop. Signs are banned. No means no.
To let u guys know. Signs are officially not banned at fanime. From what I read on that thread.
so walking around with a sign that says
"BAN SIGNS"
bad taste or really funny?

I'm tempted to beat somebody with a sign if I see one. However, I think it's best to let security/con-ops handle the issue.
best way to deal with these sign people is to ignore them if you dont like them. "my sign isnt working anymore.. it broked?" if you dont give them the attention they want, they'll either get bored and stop or they'll cause an issue that'll bring in ConOps or security to deal with them. if people begin to star problems with them, they'll probably be asked to either remove their signs or remove themselves.
Heh, I hope you guys are not targeting my brain age title screen sign ^_^;

You have to be careful here because then it can be considered prostitution. I THINK. Not 100% sure, but depending on how you phrase it you might get your sign removed.

If it was 2005 its pretty much nothing happened. But during 2006, I've been told that one of my friend's sister had her sign removed cuz it said "tap dance for money" which is soliciting. I stopped the "give me money for DDR" ever since.
I'm not reading all of that, but I think "Free Hugs" should be okay since it's almost everywhere nowadays. :3
(And I saw a booth at Wondercon with "Free Hugs Here" on it. ^^ )
