Title: What Do You Do To Go Green?
Post by: Dragon Ninja on February 11, 2008, 09:09:33 PM
What do you do to help the enviroment? Here are a couple of things I do.

-Have a big bag to collect paper and plastic.

-Sort recycleables from the trash.

-Drive a gas-saving 4 cyl. car.

-Collect and save plastic bags from many stores.

-Replaced several light bulbs in my house with energy-saving CFL bulbs.

-Turn off and unplug any lights and appliances when they're not needed.

-Collect old and used batteries until they're ready to be properly dispose of.

-Collect cans and bottles and cash in on them.

I:
Sort recyleables and redeem aluminum cans.
Carpool when possible.
Changed almost all my lightds to CFL's (was a real pain to find CFL replacements for three way lamps thou).
Began sorting out and properly disposing of E-wast items at work.
Only put out trash /recycling / green waste bins when they are full on trash day (saves fuel and energy for the trucks).

re-use the plastic bags my family gets when shopping. - i'd use the re-usable ones if i could

Bike - i use my bikes as much as possible, even when i go shopping, or i take public transit.

redeem plastics, glass and aluminum

recycle paper and cardboard

only turn the lights on when someone is in the room and it's too dark to use natural lighting.

read a book instead of watching tv.

- My house is running completely on solar power.
- I recycle all bottles, glass, etc.
- I'm trying to find a shower buddy, but it's difficult to find one near me.

We recycle, reuse, and compost in my house. Three adults, and we put out maybe half a green garbage bag of actual -garbage- per week, compared with four to six bags a week average on our street. The rest goes out with the recycling or back into our garden.

I don't drive myself, I either drive with someone else if they're heading in the right direction, or I take public transit. And considering where I live it's almost -40 right now, I think that's worth a few props. ;P

I don't use CF bulbs as they give me a migraine, but I do use 40w bulbs instead of 60w or 100w in most cases, and don't leave them on long unless I'm reading late at night.

When we go shopping, we almost always use the reusable cloth totes, unless we're picking up a few emergency things and don't have a tote on us.

Most of the same stuff thats been listed already.

- I bike, walk and/or take public transit.  Usually both to work and then just bike 10-15 miles home.  But for most stuff I can either walk or bike there. Great exercise and good at waking me up in the morning
- Recycle (i.e Bags, Cans, cardboard, paper)
- Changed a lot of light bulbs in my room to new lower power ones
- Turn it old batteries
- Re-use Paper & plastic bags from shopping

I recycle everything I can, ride my bike or carpool when possible, and leave the lights out when I can. And I also try not to excessively waste paper or other things.

Pretty much all that's already listed: re-using paper bags(or shopping with cloth bags), carpooling, riding my bike, turning the lights off when they aren't needed, recycling, not littering, etc.  I'm also vegan, so that saves on energy put into animal stock, etc.

I've now started to not flush the toilet if I only have to go pee. Like the old saying goes: "If its yellow, leave it mellow; if its brown, flush it down."

My family used to own San Mateo County Scavangers, which was bought by BFI, and is now Waste Management. So, we've been apart of the garbage/Recycling industry for a very long time.

We use the special bins to recycle, separate, and take what we can to the recyclery. If you have ever been on a tour, or inside the recyclery itself, you can see what really goes on and how things work. It make stink real bad, but its worth a shot. They have so many brochures on things you can do to Reduce, Recycle and Reuse. It's very beneficial to yourself and the environment to use recycled goods and those burlap bags in stores.

- Use shopping bags for trash bags
- Drive a car with ~40mpg
- Drive for only 1/4 of my commute to SJSU, then take the 22/522 (Eco Pass FTW! But $2 CalTrain parkign FTL.)
- Use that same bus line to go to my friend's house in East SJ
- Drop plastic and glass bottles and cans in their respective recycling bins whenever psosible
- Turn the water off while brushing my teeth
- Use rechargable batteries for my camera and Wiimotes
- Put paper in a cardboard box to reuse as scratch paper
- Whenever I go to this cafe I frequent a lot, always ask for my drink to be in a "real cup" (as opposed to a disposable paper or plastic cup)
-- Take advantage of free water there while I'm at it, instead of getting a water bottle
