What year do you think Fanime will go to? I'm just wondering, I'm thinking of going in the future.

I hope it lasts for... forever. o.0
Or at least until I die. xD I'd die happily if I could die at Fanime.
Wait, that'd just be awkward... Oh well.

Every year, it gets bigger and better. Fanime has yet to reach the point of "when do you think this should end?"
:3

VIVA LA FANIME-DAY. ^^

It'll go on forever Mwahaha xP

Realistically, if anime and manga starts dying down, then that's when Fanime would. Not that it would anytime soon but yeah.

What do you define as "anime" and "manga"?  Are Disney cartoons "anime"?  Is Megatokyo "manga"?

To me, "anime" and "manga" are Japanese.  They have to be by Japanese creators living in Japan for a Japanese audience and using a certain style.  If it doesn't follow all of those conditions, then I consider to be just "animation" and "graphic novels".  From that point of view, I think anime and manga have already been dying out to the point that I think anime especially is already basically dead.  Huge portions of anime production are already farmed out to Korea.  Production studios seem to be creating anime with a global audience in mind.  Computer animation is changing the overall style.  Artists keep experimenting with style, and it seems to be only a matter of time before the world shifts to a style that it likes better.  At that point, what would set anime apart from other animation?

That said, I don't think anime being dead would spell the end of Fanime at all.  Fanime seems to encompass a lot of general entertainment (like video games) and Japanese culture (like MusicFest).  Of the three guests announced so far  (Hidenobu Kiuchi, Richard Waugh, and An Cafe), two seem to have absolutely nothing to do with anime or manga at all.  I think Fanime will continue to remake itself just fine even if anime and manga should die off.

I think Fanime will continue to keep going as long as the people running Fanime, the people attending Fanime, and the people who provide a venue for Fanime can continue to get along.

as long as the human race can digest and enjoy the Japanese culture in the form of anime and manga then fanime will live on only when we grow weary of this form of media and story telling will fanime die

-snipped-

Well, if you go by your definition then yes all anime is dead. Though, I don't think manga is dead accordingly. There are still mangaka out there that produce their stuff freehand but it's slowly dying where they're changing the way they do their things because of computers and other technological jabble.

As for my own definition of manga and anime... well it's really hard to explain. It's the feeling I get from reading/watching whatever I happen to be looking into that makes it feel that it is different from a comic book/graphic novel/normal animation. Erm... it just has this distinct tone that makes something anime/manga. Sorry, this is a very ambiguous definition on my part but that's the best way I can explain it at this time.

I do realize now that Fanime does have general entertainment as well just like you stated. Though, maybe I wasn't thinking too broadly enough because I did not take these into account. So I thank you for pointing it out. (I'm not using a sarcastic tone, it's really hard to get a point across online without hearing someone literally telling you what you mean)

I really cannot elaborate more on my points until I have a clearer definition on my own perception of anime/manga. Sorry that I cannot say more (though I wish I can). I never really gave a second thought about the definition of anime and manga.
But again, I do understand your points =) And going on tangent with your post, Fanime would be different after 10+ years where the target audience might be different but the topics/ideas Fanime will be focused on would be very different.

Didn't realize we were gonna get so in deph.^^;
Barring something like ww3 or a virus that will devastate humanity, I think fanime will be around for a long time. Maybe in a smaller form and maybe in a bigger form, but in someway our con will survive. Fans exist therefore fanime exists.

so long as we have a location to have the event at... Fanime will still live strong.

from what I know we have to book the convention center YEARS in advance. and then all the legal stuff...
*whips out STACKS of legal documents.... *

if my memory serves me correctly, we USED to be at Santa Clara Convention center and BEFORE (way back in the day) this started out like any other mini-con at the humble roots of a community college (i believe it was between foothill college or another one...)

I think the contract with SJCC goes to about 2010?... assuming that we have already extended or gotten a NEW contract for SJCC or a nice big convention center and yes... our lovely staff members...

so long as staff, fanime, and of course the content itself (anime and random j-pop culture...) i think we'll be just fine.  :)

I'd say as long as we have people going and people willing to donate their time to staff the con, Fanime shouldn't be dying anytime... How long Fanime stays in the San Jose/Silicon Valley area, who knows. lol. Judging by the facilities downtown, we might be able to last a little while longer, but that's just my estimation XD.

I would personally be extremely pissed off to see it wind up in a crowded city like SF. Not that I really have anything against SF as a whole, but for Christ's sake they already have 5+ anime cons over there. I would hate to see Fanime get lost in that sea of cons.

I just hope it stays in San Jose is all :P. lol. Sorry if that was a little rude btw.

And the parking situation is ridiculous.  (And expensive!)  I don't think they have nicer venues than San Jose anyway.

Oh yeah, of the cons I've been to so far, Fanime has the best setup being in a convention center with hotels attached on either side.  Close to public transportation, in a nice area with shops and museums close by.  I hope it stays where it is for a loooooonnnnnnnnngggg time.
Title: Re: How long do you think Fanime will go on?
Post by: Shi_Musouka on March 11, 2008, 10:48:33 PM
It's not so much the venue that worries me, but moreso the capacity limits of the convention center, civic auditorium, and whatever San Jose city facility we use that gives me the most concern.

Nonetheless, ditto on Fanime remaining at the SJCC. I think also as long as Fanime doesn't run into any extreme lawsuits where the con gets sued out of a buttload of money or a situation where the convention center and hotels have serious issues with people from the con to the point that they decide to no longer do business with us(which I hope won't happen ^.^), it'll probably come back in the remaining years too.

Some of the cons I went to in the '80's are still around (comics & sci fi). Like it's been said already, as long as there are fans to support it, there will be Fanime.

I'm sure its gonna be around almost forever.  I mean if cartoons can last that long and anime should do the same.

Yes! Thank you Tony! Now I see the future:

One sunny afternoon, the Rovers(Safety) mysteriously become so deathly afraid of glompers and seme paddles that the entire department breaks up and runs out the convention center screaming. Because all the Rovers are gone, no one is there to enforce the Weapons Policy. The result? In 2009, someone gets beaten, kicked, and abused with weapons and Fanime gets sued for letting old Bob hit little Mary with his zanpakuto. Mary wins the case, taking money from Fanime and thus, Fanime can no longer afford to happen because Mary had to complain. Darn you Mary... *shakes fist in rage*haha, I kid. lol. Hope I didn't take it too far though... :/

Oh you kidder. This guy is always good for a laugh. I know he's kidding....your kidding right? *nervously starts to sweat.*
But in all seriousness, it seems like fanime consumes more of san jose when it ever needs more room. Pretty soon half of san jose will be occupied during fanime.

Then after that we'll take over the rest of San Jose and rename it FANIME JOSE!

Interesting question.

The only history that anime has to compare itself against would be comic and SF conventions and each of these has had a trend of growing and dying for different reasons and while each is no longer in its glory days, they still do exist in one form or another.  Some have expanded to become monsters, like ComicCon, while others disappear off the face of the Earth, TimeCon.

As for FanimeCon, well, we are booked the SJCCF in downtown San Jose until 2017.

As long as FanimeCon continues to expand its appeal to the general audience, than we will continue to remain in one shape or another, but I highly doubt that any of us will recognize it in 2020.

The year 2017:
1) gasoline = $10
2) 1 Canadian Dollar = $3 US dollars
3) The US government auctions off the state of California on ebay to help pay the national debt

4) There will still be FanimeCon  ;D

As comparison, I think the oldest convention for a similar fandom is WorldCon, which started in 1939.

In 2017 many people will be considering Bleach and Naruto to be "old school" animes. That will be scary.

With inflation and the price of gas and the like, probably not as far into the future as a lot might like.

I think all the big cons (A-Kon, Boston, AX, Fanime...) MUST significantly scale back, for one reason or another, or they run the risk of expecting X and getting X/2 because the people won't be able to afford the $500-ish entry fee, or they run the risk of not being able to handle the crowds in any real capacity...

(And that's room + transportation + entry to the con itself)...
