Title: What is your anime pet peeve?
Post by: shy-cosplayer on April 09, 2008, 05:44:36 PM
mine is when other people pronounce names wrong.

ex: correct - "nah roo toe"  incorrect - "neh roo toe" or "neh roo too"

Well, technically "Nah roo toe" would be how the stereotypical white person would pronounce it as. :J

"RAN-muh" (Pronounced as in past-tense of Run)
"That Dragon Ball Z stuff" (usually followed with a swift kick in the face)

Well, reading benefits people, too.

Like, learning the language they're reading it in.

One of my pet peeves is when an anime guide or something gets a character's hair color, eye color, or gender or such wrong. Example: dub version of FMA says that Envy is a woman. (WTF?! ENVY IS MALE!)

When a bunch of rabid, uncouth fanboys or fangirls change from the latest Dbz to something I actually like.

People who believe they are certain characters. The only characters they are are themselves.

1: American voice acting
2: When the plotline tries to make a scientific explanation that isn't in agreement with any well excepted theories.
My message to anyone who creates this type of anime:
I will personaly walk up in your production studio with Stephen Hawking and Schrodinger and "teach you a lesson" (And if anyone brings up any of the M-"Theory" Punks... it's down. Proving that "Theory" is slightly harder than proving the existence of God.)
3: People expecting you to get every name/word that's Japanese correctly. You know what? Do I expect you to know what Wave Function Collapse or what (now moving on to tech terms) SCSI or ISA stand for? I have a hard time speaking English godamnit, now don't expect me to know the pronunciation and be able to perfectly enunciate a name of an anime. This is America, the cultural butcher shop.

When poorly raised American kids watch "violent" animes (Naruto, anyone?) and end up killing one another.

Parents teaching kids reality from fantasy is win. Parents using TV and cable as free babysitters is lose.

Or for that matter, that CARTOONS in general aren't just for little kids! (Of course, they believe this in the face of Family Guy, South Park, Drawn Together, King of the Hill, The Simpsons, even some of the older WB cartoons... NEVER MIND THAT, CARTOONS/COMICS ARE ONLY FOR KIDS.)

I totally agree. Also it gets to me when you have those people who are cosplaying but then get all pissed off when you ask to take their picture. Hello? Why'd you even cosplay if you didn't want some attention and camera time?

Wait, excuse me? Not everyone cosplaying is doing it for attention and having their photos taken. The point of cosplay is to wear a costume to portray your love for the character. Why would you get upset if they said a no to having their photo taken? It's up to them, and what their comfortable with. The only reason why any of them would get 'pissed off' is if you're being persistent about it.

I see I my wording didn't put forth my point. It is totally their right to say no to a picture. But getting attention and getting asked for their pictures is a natural thing to happen and should be expected when you through on a cosplay outfit. What gets me is when they get all upset and angry becuase you've asked.  It's happened to my friend on several occations at the last convention we went together. I don't know if that is particularly rare or what, but she wasn't even being persistant, asked them once and they get all angry and start calling names as she walked away. It really made me arngy to see my friend treated that way and there would have been violence if she wasn't insistant on just moveing on.
And I didn't speak out that little nib of info about cosplayers dressing for their love of the character becuase i thought that was understood, I'm sorry. I myself cosplay and understand that for the sake of loveing this character and to play then that as a bi-product attention of others will be drawn and questisions for picutres and hugs will be asked.
That brings another thing that gets to me. people who hug without permission, or hug all messy like and tear or damage the outfit that took me weeks on weeks to make..
Now i sound like a total ass haveing to clarify this..sorry, i really don't wanna make trouble.

Oh, well... then that's just weird. It is normal to be asked to have their photo taken when cosplaying, but I get annoyed when people take no for an answer. If she was pissed off from the instance she was asked, then... I really don't know. XD

But as for the whole hugging without permission thing, this forum has had a history on that and most people here agree that... asking for permission is encouraged.

Alright, maybe it's just me that finds it rather annoying, but whenever I'm on myspace and someone wants to add me to their friends, and I click on their profile to check their pictures, but all they have are pics of anime/video game characters and none of themselves. And then to make it even worse they put captions underneath some of them going "This is me" or something of that nature. It's horribly irritating and makes no sense to me.

Wow, that is weird and totally annoying, espesially on a place like myspace.
Is it possible that it was perhaps an online roleplaying profile you were looking at? Usually those things stay within msn, gcn, or places like buzzen and oasiz chat.

I wouldn't doubt the possibility of it being a roleplaying profile, but what gets to me is that this person is wanting to add me, but they give me no basis for wanting them as a friend. Like, why would I want to add someone who I don't have the faintest idea of who they are? I hope that makes sense.

I see. Yes, that is totally anoying and far to common sadily enough. maybe this person just wants a bigger friend list XD. I know a few people who have mini competitions to see how many people they can get to be their friend in a day. It's sort of a strange sport of theirs. o_O

I thought the rest of the anime was pretty good. Except for that first part, the children that bossed Lucy at the end deserved to get killed. I smiled at that time :P

Sigh... Any who, I guess another pet peeve is when an anime is TOO sexual. To me, when ever an anime has to many panty shots, big boobies and sluts it just means the anime is so bad that it has to show all that just to keep your attention. Take Goddanar for instance, has lots of T & A BUT has an interesting storyline and badass Mecha, not to mention cool characters. (Shadow is hellza fine! Even if she is a crossdresser who looks like a smexeh man x3)

Definitely the pronouncing-the-name-wrong issue, but I also think that it is annoying when a manga is finally made into a series, it turns out to be crap!

I agree with everything else in the thread save this.

Cosplaying in front of a crowd of people and getting upset or being a douche when asked for a picture is the same as the girl who wears the slutty clothes and then she (or her boyfriend) gets on your ass for looking at her. Your insecurities (or whatever the hell the problem is short of someone being annoying about it) aren't everyone else's problem. You chose to do it.

I am not trying to generalize and I understand not everyone does it for everyone else but there are plenty of people out there who are instantly incensed at the thought of someone wanting a picture with them or giving them attention.

And while this isn't completely anime centric, I would like to (again?) add that hugging/touching/'glomping' without permission is wrong and deserves an ass whoopin'. Last year I saw a girl hug (or glomp or whatever, I say tackle) someone in a costume and break part of it. L2control yourselves.

Also, one more for incorrect pronunciations. Muhcross/!. Nartoe/too (yeah, no U). RANma. Just to name a few.

Why is it that people can't read? She explained herself and I sad I misinterpreted. I'll quote myself.

Quote from: Jun-Watarase on May 09, 2008, 11:25:38 AM
Oh, well... then that's just weird.

But in your case, no. I don't agree. People should cosplay for the sake of wanting to have fun cosplaying a character they love. Cosplaying is expression for said love-- not for attention whoring and asking people to take photos of them because they're dressed up. NO WHERE in my post said that they should get into a hissy fit when people ask them to take their photos, but I DID say that they should have the right to say "no". Exactly what is so difficult to understand about that?

A lot of cosplayers can relate to this some way or another. Some people just don't want their photo taken, especially if they're sitting down to eat or took off a part of their costume. Say someone has a cosplay with wings and gloves and all that nice stuff. They're eating, so they had to take bits and pieces of their costume off to relax. Someone goes up to them and asks for a photo. It'd be too troublesome for them to put everything back on, so they can simply say "No, thank you. I'm eating at the moment and most of my cosplay isn't on, and I don't feel comfortable taking photos incomplete." If the photographer understands, he'll leave him/her alone and take photos of other people that are available. If the photographer is an annoying douche with no tact, then he'll persist in asking for a photo. So the cosplayer is saying no. Is he/she a whiny douche?

Say someone isn't comfortable taking photos at ALL. Maybe they're new to the cosplay scene. Maybe they don't feel comfortable having their photos on the internet. Maybe they're unphotogenic, or sick. They can simply say no. If the photographer understands, then that's it. What's the problem? Unless the cosplayer is getting upset JUST from being asked a photo, then I have no idea. I don't even know why anyone would even DO that, rather than a quick and easy "No, thank you. I'm not comfortable with photos."

People have the right to say "no" to those who ask to take photos of them... JUST AS HOW they are able to say "no" to people asking for their hugs. It's dependent on what THEY feel comfortable with and it's THEIR personal space, and many people seem to be capable of respecting that. Why can't you?

But anyways, your analogy with the slutty clothes thing is terrible. You can't compare it like that UNLESS they're taking photos of them. Do you honestly think it'd be polite to take a photo of some random girl in slutty clothing without asking permission? It's the same as asking cosplayers. You can LOOK. No one ever objected to that. I don't think any cosplayer that goes out in public has problems with people LOOKING at them. But photos are different. Do I really have to spell out the difference for you?

No. You have spelled everything out just perfectly, especially the part where you missed my point and how I was agreeing with you almost completely.

My analogy was fine. It's along the same lines. Bottom line, if you wear it, expect attention. Not all do but some people get pissy when asked at all. Period.

My portion of the conversation is over seeing as how instead of trying to have a civil conversation, you got quite condescending. Appreciate the effort, but I'll move on.

The analogy doesn't work. I hate it when people get into examples like "Why did look at her/rape her?" and the reasoning behind it being "She was wearing slutty clothing! She was ASKING for it!" It doesn't work that way. Sorry if my post seemed too condescending, but I honestly dislike the mentality of the whole "She was asking for it" crap.

They can expect attention, but that comes along with asking if they'd want to take a photo instead of just taking one without permission. You can't take a good photo without the cosplayer's consent-- if they don't want to, they won't pose for you or allow you to take a good photo.

But again, I really don't... understand why anyone would get pissy from being ASKED to take a photo. The only reason to really get upset if the photographer was too persistent after getting a no.

err some styles from the Harajuku area in Tokyo is european influenced such as gothic and lolita fashion. Its inspired by european roccoco time period and 18th century victorian. The punk look as always has its british origins and what not

Just had to say it :d as for european looking anime characters it dosent really bother me, Its all on the character design to decide all of that fun stuff im guessing. It gives it more diversity in a show than having a one race show especially since its also going to cater to overseas viewers

People who pretend that they're whatever character from an Anime.
There's this guy that comes into the bookstore where I work at every so often - the first time was the evening of the final day of ACen up in Chicago, so I asked him if he cosplayed L there, since that's the sort of clothing he was wearing. Then he told me he WAS, indeed, L... and his girlfriend lightly took his hand and told him "let's go, Ryuuzaki" shortly afterwards. Erm, wtf? I see them in the store every so often even now, and he's always dressed the same way. Granted, at least he bathes and such, since he doesn't reek of any unwashed clothing or anything when he passes me down the eisle...

--I also don't like it when people say random Japanese in their sentences, when they don't even know what they're saying to begin with.
There are some people that I've heard saying "kowai" when they obviously mean "kawaii"... seriously, if you don't even know the difference between kowai and kawaii, look it up. Japanese is one of the easiest languages to spell in romanization, and it only costs a few bucks to get a dictionary. I don't mind when people use some words to help them memorize if they're learning the language, though. My best friend and I do that all the time with each other, but we'd never do it in front of people at random - just people that know what the words are and can help us out. It's easier to memorize that way, definitely. But when people only know two or three words and obviously haven't tried to learn more - that's when it gets annoying.

On the same, yet opposite hand; I hate it when people get REALLY elitist over Japense spelling/pronunciation..

Last night I got to hear a rant a bout " some stupid little bitch who whenever she writes about Bleach spells the word  'Taishou' OMG!! isn't she STUPID! and besides that's the a different term which is the generic term for leader/ commander!"

I could be wrong, I don't claim fluency, but I'm pretty sure that " Taichou" is the generic term for leader.
It does not specifically mean 'captain'. I believe captain is  Teishu' ( I don't even know if i spelled it, and I don't care)

I told her this and said that maybe the girl got them mixed up. She just kept rambling about how she was wrong and stupid ec.

Basically, she had no clue was talking about but had to bitch about this girl because she doesn't like her.

Eh, I get annoyed at both people who are extremely elitist and flawed in terms of the Japanese language, ESPECIALLY if they don't speak enough to carry on an actual conversation. Most of the time when I encounter people who are elitist about the language can't actually speak much at all, outside of a few terms they'd learn from anime. They'll try to say sentences that deviate from the basic/normal language and be praised by the people around them (who cannot understand, thus defeating the actually point of speaking a language) until someone fluent comes along, where they shut up.

Not knowing a language doesn't make you stupid, but if you attempt at speaking it, at least study enough to get whatever you're saying right. Mispronunciations may or may not create completely different words and intentions, and because Japanese is phonetic and relatively easy to pronounce, you should be able to say words correctly after a few minutes of practice. I understand that it's harder for people with Western upbringings, but that's just pronunciation-- not mixing up letters and creating gibberish.

I don't speak fluently, but my comprehension and what I DO know how to say is at least pronounced and used in a fashion where it sounds relatively native. I never claim to be fluent, but I do have experience helping people out when they know less, whether it be for the greetings at Maid Cafe training or people doing Japanese homework. Not knowing Japanese while you're watching anime doesn't make you stupid-- making assumptions like you being ABLE to learn Japanese through anime is stupid.

Weeaboos in general. Everything that comes with it. Attention whores, and wannabe fans that care more about the "status" than the content.

Some things to bring up though. Anime is for kids. It's written for at best, young adults. Adults can get enjoyment out of it, but it doesn't change that it's written for for non-adults.

Then someone will bring up ero-anime and stuff. Okay, you're right, they do make pornography in cartoon form. The issue with this is that, it's a fetish though. It's not meant to be for the general public, and is targeted towards a specific group.

So when someone says "anime is for kids"... they are quite correct. Why are you getting offended that you like something written for kids/teens? I can say... I like cartoons, and be fully confident in that. I can say I like watching Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Which is undeniably a kids show. I can say I enjoy watching kids show. What problem is there with that? What the hell are you trying to prove to other people to where you can't state that "Yeah, they generally are, but I find enjoyment out of it because the stories are good".

If you can't say you're a fan of something because someone questions it, then you're not really a fan are you? Face it... anime is for kids. It's written for kids, it's aimed towards kids, and it gears towards them. They have a lot of content that older fans can enjoy, and many do, but in the end it's still aimed towards kids.

As for the taichou thing. Realistically it is un-translatable but I just asked my friend to go into detail about it and we came up with the same thing.

Taichou isn't really "leader" as that would assume that he is the head person of everything. It's used in circles/groups as individuals. Captain, not the military rank, but the normal usage of the word is probably closest to what you can compare "taichou" with. It's the leader of the group, but not necessarilly the head person. Like in Keroro Gunso for example. Keroro is the Taichou of that squad, but he still is only a sergeant, who has a lot of superiors. So his squad calls him Taichou, but others wouldn't. On sports teams, the team captain is the team's taichou, but he still is under the coach for example. So it's not really "leader" but "captain".

As for "attention". Chewie: Cosplayers are going to get asked to take their picture. Yes you're right. But cosplayers can say no. Not all cosplayers LIKE getting their picture taken. That's not even the whole point/idea of cosplay. So if someone doesn't like getting their picture taken, instead of cosplaying and saying they prefer not to get there picture taken, they should, just not cosplay? They should be forced to not do something, because they don't want their picture taken?

Sorry, that doesn't make sense, especially when THAT'S NOT THE DAMNED POINT OF COSPLAY.

If a cosplayer constantly gets pissed and bitches at people that want their picture taken, and complains that people ask to take a picture, then you'd have a point, but in general, nope, you got nothing.

I will say, that some people have stabbed other people because they looked at them wrong. I won't give details, who what where when and how, but there are instances of girls dressing like sluts and having their boyfriends kick dudes asses who look at them.
It doesn't happen too often to my knowledge but then again, the world is a big place.

I hate people who want to be 12 year old Japanese school girls, these said people are 20 something males with no lives, talk about wanting to be Japanese, telling lies to try to be Japanese (like telling people you got a name change to something Japanese...good god), wanting to go to Japan but never have, and talk about Anime/Manga as if they know everything, but have actually not read/watched a lot of what they say.

I'm Chinese, and I don't hate Japanese people in any way/shape/form. In fact, I have a lot of good friends that are Japanese. BUT FUCK, If you aren't Japanese, STOP trying to be something your not ESPECIALLY IF YOU CAN'T PULL IT OFF.

Except you're generalizing. I already stated I wasn't. While I am sure there are more people who are fine with it than aren't, there are quite a few who for no other reason than being asked get upset or (at least to the person asking) get instantly annoyed.

You two missed *my* entire point, AGAIN. Fact of the matter is there are people out there who don't like attention and who can't handle being asked for pictures. It comes with the territory. If you are going to get bent when asked for a picture, then maybe you need to rethink dressing up. Yes, I said it. If you are some kind of recluse or not a people person or just don't like being photographed, you sure as fuck shouldn't be going out in public dressed as an icon from anime or science fiction movie, book, etc. Whether you love it or not is moot. You are putting yourself out there for everyone else as much as you are yourself in a setting with 10,000 some odd people. It really is that simple.

However, I'll quote myself and try to get the point across again.

Read the underlined part. I said I agreed with Jun, but I also said that not everyone was ok with being asked. It's a simple matter of different experiences but you would rather generalize that "everyone is generally ok with it until someone is annoying" when Miko and I both saying that clearly we've  had other experiences.

We get it. Really.

You should too.

Nah. I had already mentioned that it's just weird if someone INSTANTLY gets annoyed when being asked a photo, and under most circumstances... shouldn't happen. Hopefully. But it's along the same lines as someone pestering a cosplayer and getting annoyed when they refuse. I argued against your post when you had brought up, "Cosplayers should expect the attention and accept it when people take their photos. They were asking for it."

As long as people politely ask, and are okay with cosplayers also politely saying "no" if they wouldn't like to take a photo, there really shouldn't be any problem.

Elfen Lied was published in Weekly Young Jump. Weekly Young is aimed towards 14-19 year olds. Other series that were in Weekly Young Jump? Addicted to Curry (which is pornographic by US standards), Captain Tsubasa, Liar Game, and Rozen Maiden.

So it jumps from, violent psychological series, to porn, to sports, to thriller, to loli dolls.

Yes, It is meant for teens which in turns are kids. Remember, the coming of age in Japan is 20. Our 18 (and 21) is their 20.

1. Adults that lump every anime style together. Ex. Parents that say, "Oh, is that Pokemon?", to every Japanese looking thing.(I got this a lot while drawing in high school back in the day)
2. Chris Sabat.  He's a douche-bag that ruins everything he works on.

It's worse when you understand it) ...People who think they know everything about anime or a series but actually doesn't. Anime that has the whole opening sequence made from the episodes alone, it makes the opening look fanmade (ie: Trinity Blood TVseries).

People who think all anime is Naruto or Bleach....or people who think Kung Fu Panda counts as anime. Or adults who go "Don't read anime in class!". Sheeeesh, it's called manga. btw, it wasn't me who was reading, it was some Narutard girl I hate who thinks she knows everything about anime.
ex:
her:OH LAWLZ ARENT ANIME AWSUUUUME?? I MEAN< JUTSUS R SO KEWWWL!
me: Jutsu and other ninja crap are not directly related to anime.
her: BUT AAAAAAAALLLLL ANIME HAVE JUTSUS!! U DUN KNO ANYTHINGG!!
me:*ignores*
her: *follows me around to get me to pay attention to her*

That just made me feel better about myself, lol.
eh? why?
