Title: Long Lines to register
Post by: wavieira on April 20, 2008, 06:51:53 PM
Last couple of years were awesome!  However, I heard several complaits (and experienced this myself) that registration lines were awful!!  in 2006, I waited almost 2 hours for some moron to take my money and give me a pass.  Last year wasnt much better.  I attend tons of conferences, and this is (by far) the worst in the registratoion process.

For me five minutes.

I totally agree. Last year was my first year and I stood in line for well over 3 hours. I was shocked at how there was only 4 - 5 registration booths open and there was a hold up. I think this year it would be a smart move , and Fanime's best move to have around 10, or atleast 7 , registration booths open this year as to keep long lines to a minimum and in general just to get people in.

That's why pre-regging is so very awesome. As long as you have the info on you, it's a breeze.

For at con regging, it depends on what time you are regging. At certain points of the day it'll be longer than others...

Actually, it's funny. The last two years I've gone I didnt do pre-reg. So I waited in line for 10 minutes to get my badge. All the while, the pre-reg line probably took others at least an hour or two! Tis a mystery.

It severely depends on WHEN you go.

It also depends on when everyone else decides to show up.

Last year, was particularly bad. We seriously had line control problems =P.

I was the guy going up and down the lines yelling stuff like prices, answering questions, etc. Remember me? Haha

Anyways, this year it is supposedly better.

If I noticed anything last year, it was that Pre-reg took longer than normal. Me and a friend got there at about 3. Got in line, and waited. The wait felt unusually long to us so I was wondering if you folks noticed the same?

I think that was really due to the regular line being so backed up =p

There are several reasons (not to be confused with excuses) of why Reg was so bad last year on satruday morning which turned into saturday evening for the 5+ hour wait.

As Rovers/Sauces was trying to keep the line in check...

Registration team had several internal (uncontrollable problems) that held up the processing of the line.

Limited staff, limited training, Broken credit card readers, and other printing issues just to name a few.

again thats why most con-gers would preach the pre-registration before con.
People who reg @ con have to understand theres never a perfect process and we're sorry for literally killing 5+ hours that you could never get back, but if the reg line attacked and brutalize the Registration team would that really solve anything?

Next time have a plan, and if u are going to wait for 5+ hours bring something to entertain yourself and please dont cause a mob mentality by rubbing off negative vibes just because you cant control the situation.

like most people say lately :
Fanime is a privalege; NOT a right. there's a difference.   :)

After waiting five or six hours in line after pre-regging for my first big con (AX 05), nothing seems that bad to me anymore ;)

Last year I was super lucky and got a dealer pass and someone else had gotten it for me, so I had no waiting, but even a few hours this year won't be the end of the world.

So long as your a legitmate dealer and derserved the badge... im okay with that.

its extremely frowned upon to inappropriately use/swap badges for personal use.

Please dont do anything sneaky unless ur a license ninja.
Ask a ninja, the application and selection process of ninjas is brutal.
not a pretty sight at all.  :P

Oh, no! I was staff at the Gaia Online booth. :) It was legit.

They registered us all as a group, and gave us all our badges so we could come set up in the morning.

Could'nt have said it better myself, a little bit of planning goes a long way. Remember this year, pre-reg is your friend and if you were unable to pre-reg, early reg or showing up to line as early as possible are good alternatives. Also, if you live in the area you could always volunteer or become staff in order to help with the registration issue, this is a convention by the fans for the fans so every little bit helps.

Also, this topic may have been better suited for the "Registration (http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/board,35.0.html)" forum.

Reg staff is still recruiting hardcore =P.

Rovers/SOS is still recruiting.

Need more staff!

It helps reduce the amount of problems =D

hehe if you want to convey your displeasures about a long wait, qualify it with the day, time, and type of pass......then you can help us encourage pre-registering and help people identify when the less busy times are.

trust me, these lines are not from a lack of trying. reg staff is working their lil bottoms off to improve the process and get you into the con faster so you can see more and have more fun....

honestly, reg staff has the biggest motivation to get you all regged. so they themselves can rotate out and see the con themselves:)

Peace

Whaa? How do you think he took over my job? :P

---

But seriously, FanimeCon gets this compliant every year and every year we try to reduce the lines by trying new things (the people in-charge of this actually work out ideas year round) so it's not that we're not listening. As FanimeCon grows, the lines will grow but we're going to continue to strive to make the wait as short as possible.

A DS, iPOD, friends, and an over active imagination are all things to bring for line waiting. Or oddly enough, if you ENJOY waiting in lines (I know of two people) then you're set.

The wait isn't terrible if you have something to do.  I remember three years ago I was the first person in the pre-reg line on Saturday by arriving at 6 o'clock (of the four years I've gone, two years I've had to come late on Friday, so I would miss my chance to register then).  Second in line was a nice girl Kakashi and we talked for a while.  Last year (first in line again) I brought my DS, and a group was playing Elite Beat Agents so I joined in.  So yeah, I don't really care that much about the wait, I just like to be there early.  The general atmosphere is still that of having fun with people that have similar interests as myself, which is an atmosphere I rarely get to experience.  It's the only place I get to wear my Naruto headband and not get any weird stares.

My first year we stood in line for a couple of hours, it was fun actually.  My friend and I talked to a lot of people around us and saw a lot of really neat cosplay walking by.  We went at about 1:00 on Saturday, I think that's why we were in line for so long.

Last year I showed up at around 10 o'clock a.m. on Friday...totally by chance.  I think I stood in line for 2 minutes max.

I guess what I'm saying is that every year is different, be prepared to be in line for awhile if you have to.  Here's hoping things go fast though.   :D

My friends and I try and arrive Friday around noon each year and we have never waited more than 20 min in the pre-reg line. However, I have a DS prepared if necessary.

Early friday seems like a good time because a fair amount of students aren't allowed to get the day off. (WARNING: Generalization ahead) Seeing as how the majority of Fanime attendees are high school students, and roughly 5-10% of them get to leave school friday to get their badges, getting there before noon on Friday gives you good chances of getting your badge quickly.

Or go the evening before when nothing but the Swap Meet is around (Thursday) and miss no con at all. ^^ As soon as I get off work on Thursday, I'm heading down there to grab my badge. Last year I waited anywhere from 30mins to an hour and that was with getting there about 7pm. Brought stuff to do, talked to others in line...it all moved pretty well.

There are a fair amount of college students that go as well and I don't know about anyone else, but I ALWAYS had one stupid professor that would schedule a test on Friday so that I had to stick around instead of enjoying the Memorial Day weekend.

Got lucky this quarter and got a professor who realizes that her students probably aren't going to show up anyway on a Friday before a long weekend and scheduled an optional class. Still waiting on my other professor, but the midterm is earlier that week so he can't possibly have anything really important for us to do... I hope...

Preferably long since it's in the afternoon.

XD My time in line last year was none since I had my friend buy my badge on Saturday since I knew it was LONG when I got there at 1pm. This year, it's Thursday since I pre-reg and no school too.

=/ If you're talking about long lines, AX has the worst when I attended one year.....

After waiting in the Anime Boston reg line this year for over 9 hours, everything else is nothing compared to it XD Last year's pre-reg line for Fanime was pretty good on Thursday, I remember waiting about an hour and a half around 6p.m.

I would rate 2PM on a Friday as medium. It won't be a sleepy Registration on a Monday afternoon and not a hectic one for Saturday.

So I ended up singing to myself the entire time..
I didn't get a room so i lugged around my backpack with me..
I felt dead after that..and after i got out of the line, i took a nice long sit
XD
