Augh, this sucks. There's global shortage on rice supply. Plenty of places here are sold-out, except some of the more expensive markets. Can you imagine life without an abundance of rice? I sure can't.
no rice? were all screwed.
First the Honey Bees disappearing now this!
And rice is my most favorite side dish.
Stupid global warming.
more like stupid bio-fuel research.

Potatoes are nothing like what rice is. I don't think I'd be able to convert my diet from a daily bowl of rice to a daily potato. ;;
rice-->potato.....im sorry, i just cant see the trade-off.
That's funny, I went to ranch 99 2 weeks ago and saw a shit ton of rice bags. *shrug*
If we run out of rice, I'm moving to Asia. Get it from the source. ;)

I've known about this for a while now. My mom's been w00t-ing about how much profit Thailand's gonna get from the rice exporting. It's crazy. Apparently, most of the main exporters of rice are going to stop shipping rice and keep it for themselves, which is smart, but us Asians need rice from our home-countries. Haha.
I came from a Korean market on El Camino today, they too have a shitload of rice. :0
$10-ish for the big rice bag.
we're doomed :(

WHAT!!! RICE SHORTAGE!?!? Even though I'm not asian I love rice and if I don't get my normal amount of rice once in a while, I will get in a bad mood >:(
My rice! T.T
I'm going to starve. T.T
Really sucks. I love my rice.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo *cough cough* oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!
It is a bit unnerving but... I don't think rice would become UNAVAILABLE to us in America. It'll just be a bit more expensive. Nonetheless, the thought of there being a shortage on rice... ;__;
It goes with almost everything. I can't imagine how expensive groceries will be in the future.
so i have to watch my rice usage like i do my gas now? that's bull.

Think this is going to go one for awhile or is this going to be one of them short droughts?

Well, er... There are many similarities, such as it being the raise in price, it being due to war, and etc, but there's a significant difference between rice being food and gas being fuel for vehicles. I mean, with rice, we have the option of eating other food and not starve, but when it comes to gas, it's the main source of fuel and doesn't really have alternatives. It also isn't nearly as pricy.

Don't know. I mean, eventually the rice supply could improve, but it doesn't sound like it's going to happen any time soon.
Hmm well I better hit up my local Costco and get the king sized bags.

If my monthly rice costs even reach HALF of my monthly fuel costs, I may have to start rationing. :(
Not really, I know it's a clear difference but seeing as how rice is to me (typical asian/ filipino eating rice with EVERYTHING as you stated) it might as well be given the same status as gas with having no alternatives (this applies to my personal opinion on the substitutability of rice). So I'll have to begrudgingly pay up for my 10 lbs of rice every month. :-\
Like you said, fuck eating a potato every day, gimme my rice!!

not that bad, actually. then again, the potatoes were cooked in a tomato-based sauce. still good, nonetheless.
Us Salvadoreans, Mexicans and Central American people use Rice as well for their dishes. Time to stock up now.
Come to think of it, I'm not exactly clear on WHAT KIND of rice is in shortage, or if it's rice in general. I might just assume it's the latter, but I normally eat the Asian variation.
It's a good thing that I bought a 20 lb rice bag last week.

;___; that reminds me im out of rice now!
D: no more rice pudding?!?! rice is sooo expensive
I just saw a story on the news about the price of corn tortillas skyrocketing in Mexico. The reason? Much of the corn crops are being diverted to make bio-fuels.
>.>; I've heard about my folks complaining about the rice prices going up, didn't think it was this bad...
Then again my favorite thing to eat is Nigiri...... So....
If there is no rice, I don't know what I'll do..
... I usually eat rice with some type of Filipino food my parents cook for all three of my main meals. If I skip breakfast, then twice a day.
What the heck will I eat otherwise? >_> The only time I don't eat rice is if I bring something for a school lunch and I just grab a bag of chips or if I want a really quick snack of some junk food.
Quote...world's largest exporters to restrict exports severely, spurred panicked hoarding in Hong Kong and the Philippines, and set off violent protests in countries including Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Haiti, Indonesia, Italy, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, the Philippines, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Yemen.
Holy crap that's a lot of places. Violence? That's pretty crazy.
Quote...little of the world's rice is actually exported — more than 90 percent is consumed in the countries where it is grown. In the last quarter-century, rice consumption has outpaced production, with global reserves plunging by half just since 2000.
... and if countries start minimizing the exported rice, how will countries who almost totally depend on exports get their rice? :( It'll be worse if more countries start hoarding their rice.
Dude, during my spring break, I forgot to cook rice, so when my brother brought home food from my aunt's, I couldn't eat it. It was tragic.
Even though I like noodley entrees better, rice is so important to many cultures. This is gonna suck...
Well... So much for enjoying Indian food every week -____-. My mom went to buy rice today and the prices were just crazy. Guess that leads us one step closer to global starvation.
But seriously, I'm going to be pissed if there's world hunger next year >_>... Or if 2009 becomes the year when water starts costing more than oil.
Augh, I'm sure everyone's passed by local gas stations recently. How did nearly $3.50 become $4.10?! I don't drive yet, but I can't imagine how expensive it'll be once I do.
As for rice, I don't know how much more expensive it'll become, but I know for sure it'll add up. I'm pretty sure it'd still be affordable, just... pricy. Restaurant prices in terms of rice might not change too much, since rice is normally free... Ah, who knows.
NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
How the hell am I suppose to eat my Japanese Curry??

There's actually a method for planting rice without flooding the fields...
I forgot what it was called, dry-planting? Or something like that.

Actually the shortage is already happening here. they want 36 peso for a crap brand of rice at my local sari-sari store. I live in the P.I. and I love being on the road in Kandalaria/Dagupan/Bataan/Olongapo with rice workers drying rice..one side of the road, so you end up having to wait for the other side to pass through before you can continue.
But nothing to worry about here! hahaha Plenty of brown rice..yum yum *munches on some local rice*
I just ate a whole bunch of rice last night...
I just found out that I have enough rice left to last me a couple of months lol ;D
So I just made sure I got it right.
Couple of months ago:50lbs of rice is $26.
Now:50lbs of rice is $45.
These rates are in Sacramento.
