Title: Teacher fired under the accusation of wizardry.
Post by: Jun-Watarase on May 13, 2008, 10:45:41 PM
Original article: http://www.local6.com/news/16169506/detail.html

QuoteLAND 'O LAKES, Fla. -- A substitute teacher in Pasco County has lost his job after being accused of wizardry.

Teacher Jim Piculas does a magic trick where a toothpick disappears and then reappears.

Piculas recently did the 30-second trick in front of a classroom at Rushe Middle School in Land 'O Lakes.

Piculas said he then got a call from the supervisor of teachers, saying he'd been accused of wizardry.

"I get a call the middle of the day from head of supervisor of substitute teachers. He says, 'Jim, we have a huge issue, you can't take any more assignments you need to come in right away,'" he said.

Piculas said he did not know of any other accusations that would have led to the action.

The teacher said he is concerned that the incident may prevent him from getting future jobs.

What.

... >.>; That's really offensive and f'd up.

One could take it as religious persecution just based on the "wizard" charge.
Especially if it was someone, from one of the religions usually opposed to witchcraft, going off their rocker due to something that is only remotely tied to witchcraft by name itself.

Magic tricks aren't religious nor wrong to be shown in class. They don't infringe on no religions in school. They are just illusion.

People still have such a bias towards things like that, wicca and the paranormal.
(no one here though. >.~ probably.)

I hope he sues them for unlawful termination.
And I hope this won't be a new trend. ~knocks on wood~

Next thing you'll know if anyone does that coin behind the ear trick and they'll burn them alive like in the Dark Ages.

I guess I better not take off my (non existent) glasses, or people might accuse me of seeing THE LINES OF DEATH.

Making a toothpick disappear is almost like Copperfield's disappearing Statue of Liberty.  Obviously wizardry.

what i want to know is who reported this and why they would go to such lengths to get rid of a teacher.

i wonder if there will be any follow up articles to see what happens next.

watch someone is going to get fired/expelled/arrested for belching or farting in public.

what has become of our society?  :P

Lol! This totally reminds me of when I brought my tarot cards to school and they went missing. I discovered later that the school christian extremest had stolen them from my backpack and burned them. Isn't that stealing as well as destruction of property? This society makes no f*cking sense. I'm moving to New Zealand. >.> Does anyone know if there are anime conventions there???

I was going make a crappy photoshop of a spoon and fork balancing on half a match on the rim of a glass cup via Google image search, but found something so much better.

Also known as "I DUNNO HOW U DID ITZ, THEREFORE U MUST BE A WIZZERD!!! LIEK ZOMG UR GONNA TURN ME INTO A FRWAG OR SOMETIHGN!!!!111111ONESHIFT!"

Come ON. Anyone with a brain stem could have at LEAST tried to assume that there's some sort of physical "solution" to it. I mean, I've seen ignorance on pretty big levels, but this... this... Jiminy Christmas.

No matter what religion you pursue, you can tell this is messed up.

Didn't religious fundamentalists say something similar about same-sex marriage? Good thing that got legalized ;D.. it will tick them off even more now.

I'm not a big fan of organized religions in the first place, but I often see value in religion itself.

However,

Stupid people + Strong religious beliefs + people WHO DON'T EVEN KNOW THEIR OWN DAMN RELIGION = me banging my head on a table going wtf constantly. I've wanted to kick some religious fundamentalists ass..

Honestly, I have a lot of friends who are SUPER religious...but they are SMART/EDUCATED individuals and aren't dumb "Well dem God saidz thats I gotzta hav 30 babies to spred the gospel of teh lord and live off teh government unemploysment"

*Bangs head against table*

Um, I wasn't bringing them up. If someone-- REGARDLESS of their religion-- watches something as simple as a MAGIC TRICK and assumes it's legitimate witchcraft/wizardry (unless it's, like, creating a new life form in a pentagram or something), then they've GOT to be about as smart as a bag of potatoes left in the sun to rot.
Even some fundies could see through that. I know Christian magicians/magic-trick-sters. Well... knew, in one case. He passed away a few years ago. But still. (Here is where I agree with Steve.Young on people that don't know their own religion...)
I'm not a fundie, but I don't want to get into a debate. Let's just say ignorance, regardless of religion or lack thereof, can make anyone a moron.

These people are not Ignorant. Ignorant implies they simply don't know any better or were not taught something. Ignorance implies that if you correct them, they can learn w/e it is they didn't know.

No, these people are just Plain. Fucking. Stupid.
