Hello,
I will be monitoring the forums these 2 days before the Convention and will try to answer any questions or concerns regarding The Hilton in San Jose.
Please post your questions and/or concerns...
Thank you for choosing the Hilton San Jose and we look forward to servicing your needs during Fanime!!!

Wow, this is cool. Well, I know the answer to most of these already but I'll go ahead and post a few questions I know will be asked.
Check in/ Check out
1) When is Check in? Can we arrange to check in early? How early are we allowed to check in the day we arrive? Can we arrange a late check out? How late can our check-out be before incurring additional fees?
2) How does check in work? What do you need to process us and get us into our room as far as ID, Credit Cards, etc.? How old do you have to be to check in?
Room Stuff
1) Are there AV connections on the TV's? Where are they located?
2) How many people are legally permitted in a Hotel room at the Hilton? If we registered for 2 people and bring 3, will that be an issue? Do you have staff that insure the rooms all meet the fire-safety requirements as far as occupancy?
Other Stuff
1) What are parking costs?
2) Do you guys have internet? How much does it cost on a daily basis? Is there any way to get it for free?
Thank you. That's all for now.
Oh, awesome! Thank you :D
I'd like to confirm about the AV inputs on the televisions too, as I've heard conflicting reports about those, and don't recall from last year.
I'm also curious to know what the rates for in-room internet are, if there's some sort of a package deal for registering several days at a time, or if it's a flat $10/day.
Sorry for the late reply... I couldn't access the forum for some reason...
Here are some general hotel information...
Cancellation Policy is 72 hours prior to date of arrival
Check in / Check out
Check In Time is 4pm
Check Out Time is 12pm
We can take requests for an early check in, but it is not guaranteed. As long as there's rooms available, we will try to accomodate everyone. It will be a first come first serve basis.
Late check out will be honored up to 1pm without an extra charge.
From 1pm to 5pm there will be a half day charge
after 5pm will be a full day charge
In order to check in, your name must be on the reservation and you must provide a form of payment (credit card or cash)
The maximum number of people allowed in one room is 4 at all times.
Parking fees are...
Hotel Guests:
Self Parking $18/day with unlimited in and out privilege
Valet Parking $23/day with unlimited in and out privilege
Non Hotel Guests:
Self Parking
$6/hour then $1 per each half hour (up to 12 hours)
Anything over 12 hours will be charged extra
Valet
$9 up to one hour
$13 from 1 hour to 2 hours
$19 from 2 hours to 5 hours
$24 over 5 hours but less than 1 day
Internet:
Wireless in the lobby is complimentary
Business Center (with computer access) is available for 24 hours (hotel guests only) also complimentary
Rate options for internet service (in the room) via ethernet cable
· 1 hour = $5.95
· 24 hours = $9.95
· 3 days = $23.95
· 7 days = $49.95
The room televisions do not have AV connections (we apologize for that)
Let me know if you have other questions...

Awww, I wanted to end my night by working out and taking a dip in the pool then showering...
Oh well, I guess I can just start my day like that... (like normal people).
Alright, thanks alot.
So I'll probably get the answer to this tomorrow directly from staff, but my friend set up the net in our room per my request while I was out (and I'm paying for it out of my pocket and not asking her for help). But when I came into the room and plugged my laptop in so I could check my mail for work purposes I found it asking for me to pay again.
Is it only able to be set up for a single computer? I've never run into being asked a second time for payment before.

The answer is yes, the billing recognizes each unique computer and will charge accordingly. Inbox me your name and room number and I'll see what I can do for you.

Well that seems a touch ridiculous. I've never had a hotel do that before. If I had known that I never would have asked my friend to purchase it if she's the only one who is able to use it and I'm the one paying for it.
Forgive if I'm hesitant to message that much personal information. It's nothing personal, but anyone can sign up for an account using a hotel's name so I prefer to error on the side of caution unless someone at the hotel can vouch this is truly official Hilton staff. Am I able to resolve this at the front desk or via the tech help line instead? Because honestly if it's only going to allow one computer I want it canceled and a refund issued. My friend is using a mac and I'm using a pc so transferring files is not so easy and quick.
I usually rave about this Hilton, but this is a big negative I will let people I talk to know about. I won't be getting internet within a Hilton room after this either. I would hope this states it in the fine print, but my suggestion would be to make this more obvious knowledge in the future. Some people do need to use more than one internet capable device

Dude I am on the 3rd floor and I constantly can hear flushing toilets and water pipes in the wall. I also swear someone is vaccuming at 5am on the 4th floor. its insane @_@.
I have been woken up at 4am for the last two days by either pipes, what sounds like a washing machine or someone vacumeing too. I'm on the third floor. Any ideas what this is and what can be done about it?
We apologize for the noise from the pipes...
Whenever we have a full house, and everyone uses the bathroom/showers all at the same time, it makes a screeching noise from the pipes and some guests can hear it. There isn't much we can do about the sound, but it will be addressed once we get renovated this year.

thanks for letting me know that. other than that the stay has been great. the staff here are so nice ^_^
I enjoyed my stay at the Hilton.
I asked to get the cover off of the TV so I could plug in a video game system but I couldn't get it to work.
Not a problem with a hotel at all but it kinda sucked.
All in all, good show.
Sorry about that...

Score! Maybe I will stay at the hilton again next year...
Once the hotel has been renovated, will there still be a smoking floor? I love your hotel, but I admit the main draw for me is the smoking rooms. It's the only hotel in the area that allows it, and I would be quite upset if we lost that.
Regarding the Smoking Floor, we don't know yet. It's 50/50 right now
I'll be back next year.

Oh god, please don't remove it. I really like your hotel, and I'm sure the renovations will be gorgeous, but San Jose needs at least one hotel that still allows people to smoke if they so choose, rather than treating smokers like second-class citizens, which your competition does already. It's a terrible business practice. Smokers have money too. :/ The argument that it disturbs other guests is kind of asinine, because so do moronic parties in the elevators, people who hog the hot tub, people who run up and down the halls at 4 am, people who run the showers in the middle of the night, and the convention has more than enough of those. But god forbid someone wants to relax with a cigarette at the end of the day...

All due respect, but parties in elevators, hogging hot tubs and running up and down hallways doesn't kill people.
Second-hand smoke does. Granted you just want to relax with a single cigarette at the end of the day or whatever, and that's totally cool...but the chain smokers, etc who basically flood their entire rooms and hallways with smoke make it worse for everyone.
Anyways, we'll see how the Hilton renovates their building next year.
Please provide sources where it's definitive that second-hand smoke has been directly responsible for the death of someone. You'll be quite surprised when you can't find any. :/
Also, I'm not even the one who smokes.
Last year I had to deal with people drinking some ridiculous watermelon cocktail IN AN ELEVATOR that caused my throat to swell up. I could have died in there, I had to take an injection for it. How is that not more harmful than exposing yourself to three days of dispersed cigarette smoke?
Let's not get into this here, as it's highly off-topic... ^^; Thanks.

Because we're spending most of our time and money on the convention, we're actually going to be bringing in dry and preserved foods that can be stored at room temperature, would that be a problem? And also are there water boilers or anything that could be a water boiler? Are there refrigerators in every room?
My only concern is that my friends and I won't be able to eat the food we bring.

I think as long as the food is in a container and not spread about on the desk/table area it should be okay. We brought cups of noodles in the box and a grocery cooler cart for our other food and kept all of it in the corner under the telephone table. We also brought a hot water pot to plug in. Bought it at Ranch 99, something like 2.5 liters. If you have a coffee maker in your room, you could try heating the water in that.
We also brought extra plastic bags to put our trash in, since the trash cans in the rooms aren't that big. Just to help keep things a little neater.
I think you have to ask for a fridge and if there's one available, you may get it. I don't remember if the rooms at the Hilton come with refridgerators. That would be a nice addition to the renovations, though.

you were able to get a water boiler in there? that's great! we were planning that we just weren't sure if there would be any problem with that or not. Thanks!
Before the reno, all the rooms at the Hilton had fridges, and coffee makers that can also be used just to heat water. If you fill one up and run it without coffee in it, you get water hot enough to make noodles and things.
Not sure about now though, and I don't think the hilton staff member is still checking this thread?
We can poke the Hilton staff to come back and check =D
I'm going to lock this thread for now. After the hotel room pricing has been announced to the fans, I think only then will it be meaningful to ask these questions.
Patience is awesome.
It's announced. So, let's open this thread again.
Not to mention that the Hiltonstaff is back again =)
OK...so here's my question for HILTONSTAFF.
Do you think all of the rooms will be renovated by Fanime? If not, will we be able to request a renovated room and what do you think the odds would be to get one of the new rooms?
Thank you. ;D
I also have a question, but anyone is free to answer this.
Will the rooms (new or not) be equipped with a clothes iron and an ironing board?
If only some rooms have them, which types of rooms?

I believe all rooms come with an iron and an ironing board. In all other hotels I've stayed at these items are kept in the closet.
All the rooms are now renovated and all the rooms come with an iron and iron board...
I have a question about the executive levels. Do the executive level rooms have access to a concierge room? I know there is the executive lounge, but is that the same thing? What does the executive lounge contain? And if I were to get an executive room that comes with the free breakfast buffet, is that open on the weekend?
I have a question :)
Will the Hilton Foodstaff be ready during Fanime :D?
I loved it when they were selling sandwiches on the last day of Fanime, like 8$ for a sandwich, a bag of chips and a soda+a choice of candy bar.
It would be awesome if they would provide something like that during Fanime, not when it's almost ending.
the food gave me nutrition, it did.

The executive level does have access to the lounge where appetizers, dessert and breakfast are served, but I am not sure that the lounge will be open that weekend due to alcohol being served up there and the majority of Fanime attendees are minors. I will update as soon as I find out.

Can anyone give me details on the self-parking at Hilton?
How do you pay for parking? Is it one of those automated machines that gives you a ticket for the day? Or do you have to go into the hotel to pay?
And are credit cards ok? Or cash only for parking? (Just trying to limit the amount of cash I have to bring)
Thank you.
what's an early departure fee?
An early departure fee is to cover the cost of someone checking out early and the hotel potentially not filling the room.
If you book from the 21s to the 26th, they anticipate the room being full and generating revenue until then. If you were to check out on the 24th, that's two nights worth of lost revenue, so you have to pay a penalty.

From what I remember from Hilton's parking is you do get a ticket automatically and find your parking there. If you're going to leave, then you would have to pay with cash or card from what I remember. Best bet is if you have a room at the Hilton, ask for the self-parking ticket because it gets full real fast and you don't have to pay since it'll be on the bill statement AND their In & Out Privileges.

All the rooms have mini fridges...
Do you have rooms with one king bed and can have 2 roll away beds for 4 people?

I don't think you can ever have more than one roll-away bed in a room for fire safety...if you're going to have 4 people I think the only options are the double/double rooms, or the suites with a sofabed and a king...but the staffer can confirm or deny this.

That is correct... King rooms can have one rollaway and double/doubles cannot... thanks FanFicGuru
Does the Hilton have a shuttle to/from the San Jose airport? If so, does it operate on the weekends?

Unfortunately, we do not have shuttle transportation...
Cab/Taxi is the best option & the average cost is about $18-20 each way.

If people are cheap, aren't in a hurry, and don't have much luggage, then there's a (free) shuttle from the San Jose Airport to the light rail, and the light rail ($1.75 one way) drops off right in front of the San Jose Convention Center. The free shuttle is Santa Clara VTA bus route 10, and the light rail is 901.
Does every room have a coffee maker thing?
Can you tell me are there benefits of getting a room on the 'Executive Floor'?

I hope this link works, but you can find out the differences between each room here (http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/SJCSHHF-Hilton-San-Jose-California/accommodations.do;jsessionid=519667A7625D7D0E013E2D02975DF396.etc64) (on their official website).
Now that the Hiton has become 100% non smoking, I admit last year I choose the Hilton because my friends and I were able to get a smoking room, will be there a smoking section now?
Frakgo, I forgot i my reservations at the Hilton or elsewhere. The render's look damn nice.

Nope. The entire property is now 100% non-smoking. You can go outside and downstairs and go 20 feet away from the door.
So has the hilton upgraded their TVs to HDTVs or are they still the Sdandard CRTs with no AV inputs on the front?
New TV's.
Do they have HDMI ports?

My own question/curiosity/suggestion:
Hilton has not offered a discount on parking since my first year attending Fanime back in 2004. Self-parking was discounted from $15 (I believe) to $10 a night for Hilton guests who were attending Fanime. Many of the other hotels offer a discount on their valet parking and I've always been shocked Hilton stopped doing this.
I figure this is something that won't change in time for this year, but it has always been a large source of disappointment for me with Hilton. And one of the few things that makes me regret choosing Hilton every year since 2004. If it did not have self-parking I would most likely switch.
I would like to suggest offering a discount to the parking costs for Fanime attendees who are staying at the Hilton. This would serve as another reason for Fanime attendees to choose Hilton over the other nearby hotels.
I'm not suggesting it be dropped so low as $10 again, of course, but a small discount would be appreciated. The current rate makes staying the full weekend cost almost as much as it does to stay in the room for one night. And since my car is not treated to HDTV or even a decent amount of protection (I still have damage to my bumper from 2007 where another Hilton guest who was allowed to park in a "No Parking" area of the Hilton garage and remain there even after I was assured it would be dealt with after I complained nicked my bumper and left a large groove in it), I really don't feel it's worth the roughly $80 I spend on parking alone for the weekend, but I unfortunately have no choice as I need in and out parking.
Anywho, just a suggestion to consider for future years from a San Jose Hilton guest since 2004 :)
Just a quick question:
Do people have access to wireless internet from their rooms (either free or pay) or is only ethernet available?
Tried checking on the Hilton website, but the only thing I found out about wireless was that they had it in the lobby.

There is paid wireless and wired internet available. :)
I have a room at the Hilton and if I want to change my arrival day from Thursday to Friday...do I call the hotel or Fanime Housing to change it?? And if I am able to...am I going to get charged a fee??

"changes and cancellations without penalties until May 18, 2009."
Taken from Fanime Housing Website.
I would just call the hotel directly, but you might still be able to make changes through the housing website.
Just for anyone staying. I checked in to the Hilton yesterday and the new rooms are absolutely awesome. Staff are amazingly helpful.
Space wise, I'm in a guest with king size, but you could probably fit three on the bed if you were very good friends (!) and there is a very, very sturdy chair with footrest that is totally curl-up-on-able. Floor space is very generous too. Plenty of storage space too.
Rooms have mini fridges, decent air con, theres ice and vending on each floor opposite room xx01.
TVs have ports on the side of their units (which have a lot of space) for audio in (both singular feed and those white/red cables), video in (the yellow cable), s-video in, pc video in (standard vga style) and digital video in.
The wifi is down in the lobby, though it shows up on macbook up here on twelfth floor, but the room internet is much more worth it ($10 a night, with discounts for multiple nights) - only get one cable though, and it's fairly short.
It's a really nice place!

The TV doesn't recognize my Component cables. :( I have to use the normal A/V cables which doesn't look as good, but it's fine.
I really like the new rooms. So sexy!

What about the ones physically on the back of the tv, they look slightly different...or could just be me trying to look at them from a stupid angle.

The side panel seems to be connected to wires that connect directly to the back of the TVs. Unfortunately, there's no component connections on the side panel, but there is a hookup on the TV.
I hooked up my Xbox 360 to the Component connections on the back of the TV and it detects it when I go to A/V, but when I flip the switch to HD (on the 360 connector) the TV display remains black (without a signal). *shrugs* At least I'm able to connect my Xbox 360. :D
Loved my stay in Hilton.
The good:
Bar and Grill downstairs that served affordable food all weekend long AND Starbucks coffee with NO LINE!!! I felt sorry for all the people in line at Starbucks after getting my cup of coffee in like 2 seconds. XD.
Great staff
Mini-Fridges
Lots of space in the room
Comfy beds
Gorgeous lobby
Could be better:
Bathroom door was bigger then the bathroom itself, and it was too close to hotel room door and you had to close one to open the other and vise versa, and space was so small between them I surprised nobody got their hands stuck or something else, lol.
Bathroom sink could be bigger, between 4 cosplay girls in our room, our make up stuff did not fit, and only one person could do their make up at the time.
No mirrors in the room other then bathroom and closet door, where lighting was terrible.
No mirrors in the halls by the elevators. I sure could use one! Or add one to elevators. Even without being a cosplayer, I am sure most girls would appreciate one last glance in the mirror before leaving the hotel.
The bad:
4 am Fire Drill. Not sure whos fault it was, but after performing in masq the night before and being DEAD tired, waking up at 4 am and go outside was NOT FUN.

My friend and I found out about this a full day after it happened. At 4am we were driving to Fremont because I knew the Carls Jr. (which at the time I was thinking it'd been a Wendy's) was open 24 hours. I'm so glad we listened to our cravings now.
I actually agree with a lot that was said already in terms of pro and con this year, but to add to the con:
Parking: I was told at the front desk that the $18 had been a "special rate" negotiated by the con just for Fanime attendees since parking rates had gone up since last year. Whoopty doo, a whole $1 savings (regular parking was $19 a night for those who didn't read the Hilton Parking signs).
A/C: To make it anywhere tolerably cool in the room, my roommates and I had to turn it down as low as it would go (60F). It never got below (roughly) 78F in the room. And even then it would still be in the low 80sF most of the time. It blew nice and cold, it just did not cool the whole room down.
And, to be fair, adding to the good:
TV hookups for consoles, etc = WIN. If I'd been thinking properly, I'd have brought a DVD player with me, but being able to at least hook up a Wii was a fantastic improvement.
My biggest gripe this weekend was with the parking, however. I'm used to the gate being open in the middle of the night, but I saw it routinely open in the middle of the day for several hours on every day of the convention. This meant that anyone who didn't prepay their parking (like I and I'm sure many other Hilton guests did) got away with paying far less than they should have compared with others and myself paying $18 times however many nights we stayed.
I was also annoyed Hilton failed to give me my bill under my door the morning I was to check out as promised. It took more time than I expected just to check out because of this.
Suggestions for next time:
-A real discount on parking for Fanime attendees like we used to have.
-Or, if that is not an option, regulate the parking better so that fewer people get away with not paying.
-Or, even though it is probably not a viable option as I know that parking lot probably makes a lot of money for Hilton, I'd love to see it as "guests only" parking.
-Fix the A/C so it actually cools down the room without having to constantly run it so low.
-Please do not fail to give a bill when promised on a certain day.
Beyond that, I was again quite happy with my stay in the Hilton. The only other issues I had were not Hilton's fault (such as annoying individuals constantly telling those on the lower floors to take the stairs without regard for medical issues or the fact that those guests paid for the same right to use the elevator as they did).
I will be returning to the Hilton next year for sure :)
locked until next year
