You should already know who I am,

buuuut... As far as the Halo 4v4 tournament, I realize that any more than 4 would've taken forever...
but that's only 16 players. That was a really... lame idea, maybe we should've just stayed with the one 2v2.

eGaming had a very nice selection of games (at least if you're a shmup fan) as well as any number of arcade sticks, and for that I really liked it this year.

I'd also like to say thanks to my friend who lent his Tetris: The Grand Master arcade board. I got many chances to play it, as well as to introduce Tetris players to the wonderful world of the TGM series. ;)

However, I do have one major complaint: while I like the Beatmania IIDX setup (real arcade controllers? hell yeah!), IIDX on an HDTV is horrible. As anyone who has played on Sunnyvale Golfland's IIDX machine between 2003 and 2007 knows, HDTV + non-HDTV game = delay = serious timing problems in a game where a few milliseconds makes all the difference.

i dont know how the other tournaments went but as far as the left 4 dead tournament, it was a mess, 1st off they change it from 4v4 to 2v2? wtf? a HUGE misscomunications from the organizers and the ppl at registration, it got annoying after the 3rd time they decided to change it back to 4vs4 and keep changing it for like 30 minutes breaking and making new teams,i dont think the guys at the registration had any idea that a 2v2  l4d tournament wouldn't had work, unfortunately l4d is not a game were u can just cut the players by half, sure the survivors have bots but the zombie players would be soooo unbalance, the only way they could have a chance is with a tank and even if u guys decided to make the survivors only had to players then it would only take the zombie team to pounce them or pull them and its over.
maybe next year if u guys choose to have another l4d tourney(and u guys should totally do it)  should organized a little better, start the tournament early so teams dont have to drop out due to time  and have a limit amount of teams

The reason for that was simple. There was no space to put a CRT TV behind the controller. We didn't have any spare tables to put a TV on behind it.

The tournament was supposed to be a 4v4 from the beginning, so that's what we told anyone signing up for the tournament. But we had way too many people and too little equipment, so a 4v4 wasn't going to be feasible since it would take way too long. So it was changed to a 2v2. I don't know what happened after that since I wasn't around.

I was personally upset that there was no Rock Band 2 for people in eGaming to play. There was GHWT...except it was missing the drums, mic and hooked up to a TV that can't display color when I played it or something.... yeah.

BlazBlue for 75 cents was highly disappointing, same with Dance Maniax crazy 1$ charge. Third Strike 50 cents was also a huge letdown for many other people. The arcade was just too pricey.

I'm honestly surprised that there wasn't any sort of (scheduled) tournament for Soul Calibur 4. There wasn't even a dedicated station for it. :-\ I wanted to see Rock Band as well but found no stations for it, only Guitar Hero. Other than that I'd say that eGaming was alright (tournaments aside since I didn't enter in any).

Pros: Great selection, was really digging the Arika Tetris The Grand Masters.

Cons: Tournaments got a little out of hand. RPS tourney got canceled.

Suggestions: Hold tournaments at separate time blocks and make sure to give more time for the bigger tournaments *Smash and SFIV* If that fails then make Smash Bros it's own department.

As far as the arcade goes (I know it's a separate department)

They needed an info table with OCE on speed dial.

I think I would've liked a section for portable gamers to just get together and see what they have and get any multiplayer games together.  Otherwise, people are just scattered and end up doing their own thing.  One of the anime conventions I've been to was a LOT smaller where the gaming section was basically a normal-sized room, but because of that people just sat on the floor with the portables and would all be in wifi/talking range of each other.

More PC gaming would've been nice.  There was one guy who had a laptop with various Touhou games.

Well my biorhythm is utter garbage right now and I'm awake at 3am, so I'll give my rant.

Apologies to everyone in the Brawl FUBAR tournament.  That bracket turned into a nightmare fast.  People walking away, people not listening, people not being registered properly, the bracket not lining up right... OMFG.  I'd like to thank everyone who helped me with it and everyone who participated in the tournament for making running the tournament as smooth as possible.

For everyone who participated in my Bleach, Naruto, and Pokemon tournaments I'd like to give thanks to all of you!  The casual/ friendly atmosphere that everyone was giving off and the chill attitudes made the tournaments rather enjoyable for me to run.  Even though Pokemon was a little behind because of a certain pokemon *cough* it went very smoothly.  I hope the top 2 winners enjoy their prize Latias =)  Thanks ken for the dots on the floor for pokemon, was a very good idea!

To everyone who entered Rock, paper, scissors, I wholeheartedly apologize for the tournament being canceled. I was looking forward to seeing that tournament happen and it got canceled without anyone consulting me.  I'll be looking into why it was canceled as I am extremely annoyed at the decision to cancel it.

It was nice meeting everyone who entered our tournaments and once again thanks for being very cooperative with our Tournament coordinators.  Thank you E-gaming staff for assisting me with the Brawl tournament and for doing such a great job attending to all of the attendees.  I can't wait for next year.  We'll make next year work smoother than this year... although I think casual gaming went very well this year aside from a smaller selection of games compared to last year.

If I remember correctly the RPC tourney was scrapped because there wasn't enough staff/volunteers in egaming to do the touney due to the size and length of the smash bros tournament. To that I say, you only need like two people and maybe a megaphone for the RPC tourney.

Melty Blood Re-ACT Final Tuned was running periodically on the laptop setup next to IIDX, although it was mostly used for Touhou.  I don't believe Act Cadenza PS2 was on the inventory list.

I'm also going to offer my sincerest apologies to anyone who was miffed at the state of the tournaments (or lack thereof, in the case of RPC).  Towards Brawl time it felt like we were piecing together things out of leftover lawn clippings and bits of twine, pretty much.  For that, everyone on staff deserves a MacGuyver merit badge  ;D

I hope all of this thread gets taken into consideration for next year.  So don't hold anything back plz.

I've got a lot of ideas lined up for next year.  Currently at the top, I'm going to try pushing for better TVs and a wider selection of the more universally desired games like Rock Band 2.  If we compile a list of the games most people will want to play, we should be able to make absolutely sure there is a dedicated setup for those games throughout the con.

I am personally bringing my four laptops next year exclusively for danmaku shooters, fighters, and whatever else anyone wants to see.  Scarlet Weather Rhapsody got so much play, that it was hard to warrant swapping it out for anything else for very long.  I definitely want to see that back, as well as a dedicated Touhou setup, and maybe stuff like Ragnarok Battle Offline or Higurashi Daybreak.  I need sticks and displays though, or this can't really happen easily.  It'd be nice to dual-screen for these games; use the laptop screen and TV screen, but we had a problem with someone running StepMania this time around.  I'll probably have to set up guest accounts on these laptops to prevent any unauthorized use on the computers.

RPS was definitely an unforseen scheduling issue, the other reason it got cancelled is because so many people were also entering Smash.  We'll schedule things better next year.  Another scheduling issue was any long tournaments that started late; we'll definitely schedule those earlier so that they don't run over time.

We'll likely start shutting down eGaming around 4am for a few hours to do inventory check; things got messy pretty quickly.  This should help us better organize and prepare each day.  I think staffwise we were actually okay unlike the half staff we had last year, but the time is probably necessary to keep things running smooth.

To answer the IIDX setup, I know, the TV was awful.  There was little I could do on short time.  I'd like to apologize for the 2p keys giving out so much, I haven't figured that out yet.  Also apologies on the turntables and a big thanks to phasecactus for helping me eliminate the problems with them halfway thru con.  A big thanks to everyone who played on the controller; the wiring was finished the day before con.  With all the feedback I got on how the controller held up, it should work perfectly next year if I still have it.  Better TV promised :3

My main suggestion would be to PLEASE try to make sure you have enough people on-hand next year who have experience running fairly large tournaments. As was mentioned already, the Street Fighter IV tourney was a complete joke. How do you not at least make sure that all of the characters are unlocked on every console before running a tournament with (purportedly) 100+ entrants? This alone led to so much waiting and confusion that I got fed up and told them to remove me from the tournament altogether.

In retrospect, maybe I shouldn't have blown up as harshly as I did, but the whole thing was just an exercise in frustration.

Others:

- Try to get more CRTs for fighting games. A lot of the HDTVs there had an assload of input lag.

- Logik is right about the lack of a Soulcalibur IV tourney. When the game was running, people were playing it almost 'round the clock. Hard to believe there wasn't enough demand for a proper tournament.

Fate/Unlimited Codes Results

Fighting for the first place prize, an Alter Saber (no, not the Saber PVC by Alter) Revoltech figure by Kaiyodo.

First Place: Tsubasa (David Huynh)
Second Place: Commander Myers (Ernest Capulong)
Third Place: G (Gerardo Paz)

where was melty blood??

Melty Blood Re-ACT Final Tuned was running periodically on the laptop setup next to IIDX...

To my knowledge, they were playing MBAC PC. I don't see why they'd be playing FT.

I was mentioning a SCIV tourney for at least a month prior to Fanime and I got nothing.

I used to be decent at SCIV but I got rocked this weekend but that just makes me want to get better for next year.

As for imput lag, I think the 360s needed to be calibrated on the console for HD and the AV adapters set to HDTV. (I don't know if any of the setups were running on HDMI or not)

There might have been that many sign-ups, but there were a TON of no-shows, which led to lots people waiting around for a very long time while byes were handed out like candy. I realize that the organizers can't force people to show up to their tourneys, but I think at least some of this could have been alleviated had they not skipped the check-in process.

PS3 is the current standard for SC4 tourneys because it's the preferred platform for pad users. Input lag on LCD and plasma HDTVs (I'm not sure about CRT HDTVs) is pretty much a fact of life in my experience. Calibration or putting the TV in game mode can help minimize it, but in many cases it is still very detectable.

It doesn't matter if there was a check-in process or not, even having a full 64 man bracket would have taken hours. You need to cut them some slack.

I'd also like to see a widescreen CRT for IIDX. As I mentioned before, IIDX on a laggy TV is the worst thing in the world. You can use the timing adjustment option to fix this somewhat, but it doesn't do away with the delayed feeling.

I know it would have taken a long time, regardless. Like I said before, the long waits weren't entirely their fault. I'm just saying things might have gone more smoothly had they tried to get a better idea of how many players would actually show up. This is what I presume the check-in was for before they scrapped it. There were several stretches of time where most of the stations went unused while they were calling out names and eliminating no-shows.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying their job was easy. I had a hard enough time running a 30-man tourney, much less over 100. It just seemed there was a lack of foresight on some things (see my mention of the console characters in an earlier post).

To their credit, the eGaming staff was otherwise pretty helpful. One helped us hook up a PS3 to a CRT when we got sick of playing on the laggy flatscreen monitors (at around 2 in the morning), and they were pretty good about letting me keep my friend's arcade stick for him when he went home without it.

I'm just a grunt, I could never do that. I didn't even know how to work a PS3 this year.. because I've never touched one until fanime.
I basically just try to organize shit in e-gaming, only to have it destroyed by the rest hours later. :(

so, never ask me anything regaurding games unless you're checking in or out stuff. (' )(' )

Well then again, eGaming had its share of shmups too:
- Gradius 1 (NES), 3 & 4, 5, ReBirth, Gaiden
- Thunder Force 3-6
- Mushihimesama
- Radiant Silvergun
- Ikaruga
- Giga Wing 1 and 2
- and more...

Thanks for the feedback so far.  Still jottin all this down in the many pages of "what to do list".  XD

As far as people still bailing out on tournaments, it really can't be helped.  All we can do is reduce the number of no-shows to a minimum.  We'll figure out something for 2010.

As for those who are on the no-show list, we posted this on the forums, the eGaming info screen during FanimeCon, the mic announcements, our discussions with every competitor, multiple print-outs of signs of "please do not leave", and so forth.  We even did a final check-in to ensure that people do show up and those ho don't show up get booted off and get replaced by those on the reserve list...Yet we still get a plenty of no shows.

Just for clarification, I am only speaking from my experience in the SFIV tourney. I and quite a few others showed up to check in, and we were told that check-in was canceled to make time for more sign-ups. This is why I think probably more time was spent than necessary eliminating no-shows from the tournament. I can't speak for how the other tourneys went.

We actually had those in our games list sheet provided in the front desk.  If you checked the list and wasn't listed, we'll definitely take a look upon that.

Some games couldn't be accommodated due to certain stations being used for tournaments.

Just for clarification, I am only speaking from my experience in the SFIV tourney.

From what the statistics received, the high bailout rate occurred to other tournaments as well.  It's more of a general statement than just one specific tournament.

Hmmm.

Based on the the procedures and announcements ffrom the tournament organizers, due to the overcrowding of the registration desk, we had to move all registries in the back side of eGaming to accomodate last-minute sign-ins so that people signing up for Left 4 Dead and DDR.  Naruto was being taken care of so that's out of the equation.  We barely hit the maximum entry mark (128) for Street Fighter IV.  Then afterwards, it was the check-ins.

I'll take a further look on this.

The ddr tourney went pretty good!  Except I decided to bail out due to waiting for the pad to be fixed took so long.  But that's okay I thought the tourney went pretty well and pretty close.  Depending on the schedule I wouldn't mind entering again.

complaints:  Yes I really agree wit the people saying that IIDX running on HDTV was a huge nono.  My friend had that issue wit that couple months ago so I was like "But why did you really do that!?" It was a waste to use such a really nice awesome controller on the tv that gives a huge lag...  But I played it on the non-HDTV machine instead and I had more fun on that one than the one on the HDTV.

Understood. As long as they did as much as they could to minimize the complications caused by no-shows, I wouldn't even bring it up. I'm not positive it would have made that much of a difference, anyway. Hell, it wasn't even the most annoying part of the tourney for me. But for what it's worth, the crowd that actually showed up didn't even look close to 128 people. Not that I bothered counting.

The l4d tourny was a cluster fuck due to miscommunication, it was always set up to be a 2v2 because we didnt have the games for it, but that never got communicated right. We upped it when we found a fourth copy thanks to an awsome con-goer.
RPC was canceled due to lack of show due to fubar.
As for the character bit about SF4, I'm unsure why the extra characters weren't banned anyways because as far as I knew they aren't in the arcade game, but I do agree we need a more dedicated tourny staff (I vote JT! :O Only cause its fun watching him spazz)

I wanna know if we can get more older systems hooked up next year :( I'd love to have a goldeneye tourny yaknow?

The L4D tournament was always supposed to be 4v4. We didn't have the equipment for it, but it was originally planned as 4v4. Look at all our planning files. They say 4v4.

And maybe we should work out a deposit system for tournaments. They don't get their money back until they're officially out of the tournament or whatever (or at least tell us they're backing out). It should reduce the amount of random people dropping. Though handling money would make the insanity even worse.

i don't think we're allowed to take money nor are we allowed to take their badges.
You'll need a different plan.

where was melty blood??

Melty Blood Re-ACT Final Tuned was running periodically on the laptop setup next to IIDX...

To my knowledge, they were playing MBAC PC. I don't see why they'd be playing FT.

That was my copy of Melty Blood Act Cadenza Ver. B 1.03, running off of a Flash drive that I'd brought with me. Next year I'll see if I can swing a laptop so we don't have to borrow the SWR players' laptop.

It seemed pretty popular when I set it up - maybe not enough for a tournament, but I'm pretty sure a station with MBAC running would be fun for a lot of people.

I'll also see if I can swing a copy of Melty Blood Actress Again for next year - either under PCSX2 (which would be nice for the stick and keyboard players) or running on a PS2 if that doesn't work out.

;)

As far as e-gaming in general goes, I didn't enter any tournaments but I really appreciated all the machines that were set up for "free play" - Ikaruga, TGM, the SWR laptop, Beatmania (which I sucked at), etc. Having more of that kind of thing would really be nice.

I'd suggest, though, that games which take a long time per game be discouraged - I know at one point people were playing Left 4 Dead on two of the Xboxes, and those games would go on for an hour or more with only 5-6 people getting turns at the controllers. There's a lot more players than machines and controllers, so games which everyone can take a crack at are great. ;)

Also, more chairs, for the love of God.

:) hope I don't sound like a jerk and not sure if someone brought this up already but the left4dead tourny needed major work. I don't know if it was a miscommunication within staff or what but our team had to get in line 2-3 times after signing up to change teams because they kept changing the teams from 4 to 2 to 4 to 2 to 4 again.  ??? That was the start of the frustration. The tourny started late really late and it seemed like the set-up or how the tourny was going to be run was not already set-up or communicated with staff so I don't know what they we're doing for a while but having a good lay out on how the tourny will run before hand would be a big help and time saver and communicate with that with as much staff as possible so it hopefully runs smoother next time. When our team actually got to play I honestly can't remember the time but it was at least 2 hours if not more after from when the tourny was suppose to start.

With all the problems in this tourny our team had like hours before our next match so our 1st match was around 11pm, 2nd match was around 1am, 3rd match was around 3am in the morning  :'( . So our team was tired in our final match and we ether made it to the semi-finals or finals (I don't remember kind of tired around that time of 3am-4am) and then our team got kind of tired because the tourny was so long and late and there were times no team was playing and I honestly have no idea what was going on with staff or whatever the problem was.

Left4dead is a great game and when we actually played the matches they were really fun  ;D but there needs to be some major work on this tourny for next time. I'd recommend more set-ups so it goes faster but I know that's hard to do with xbox 360s and all. Also make sure every game staff member or at least the ones running it know fully whats going on with the tournament b/c getting in line multiple times after signing up is a huge bother. Please start the tourny earlier or put it on a different day or something because I don't think a tourny should run till 4am or later.  :-[

Again this my take on it I'm sure someone else felt the same or similar.

:D O another thing was with the smash tournies. I love that fact that you guys had both 1 vs 1 and FFA. I was fun while we actually got to play. But for the FFA tourny needs a little more organization b/c I signed up but was in the tourny and had to use my friends name because was not in it even though I signed up earlier (not sure what happened there). Also I understand there's a lot of people and all and you want them to stay there but the tourny runs for a long time and it would help greatly (for both if not all big tournies at fanime it's self) Please make the brackets visible or turn the computer around every now and then or have another computer for that to show the brackets of the matchs so people have a better idea of when they're up. That way people can see when they're up or at least see if they're some where close to coming up soon so that if they want to use the bathroom or whatever they can do so because they're not up anytime soon at all.

I know you did call the next couple matches before they started which was good but if the people could see the bracket that would help out so much for when people need to go some where else real quick or something. For example is the tournament just started and it's a 128 person bracket and I'm like # 110 or 120 that means I'm not going up or coming close to going up for probably an hour and that could make it so that I can leave and enjoy the convention more  ;D and come back with in an hour my match still might not be ready but I got to enjoy the convention it's self more rather then stay standing in line watching matches for an hour straight till my match starts. If I miss my match when I come back lets say 2 hours later that's on me for not checking back in or looking at the bracket or listening to matchs being called. I think this would help out greatly. I think this would also help out a lot for the Street Fighter 4 tournament and any other tournament at fanime as well.

Also you might want to make a line with chairs or caution tape or something away from the people playing before the tourny starts so that that runs smoother and makes who is playing or on deck more clear.

I must admit that the Tourmanets were slow and ate far too much time.
At the Halo3 Tournament I had to wait a good hour for my second match, and by the 3rd I was so exhausted that I had no wish to win, knowing i would have to wait another half hour. I missed many panels I wished to go to because if it as was not satisfied at all.
The tournaments need to be faster paced. Even having a 2nd or 3rd set up for a Tournament would be nice, cutting the wait time in half and saving everyone time.

We are aware about the issues that happened in various tournaments.  We have been working on more methods to ensure future tournaments are ran more smoothly, more visibly structured, better communication, less time filler, and a lot more entertaining.  And yes, we are taking consideration towards the replies in this thread.

We also plan on running more Free Play games to give the fans what they want.  We will work on a more detailed list of games that we plan to bring.

Just out of curiosity, when do people actually have free times for big tournaments they are interested in?  Though it be difficult to please everyone due to the amount of stuff that FanimeCon has to offer, a general time line never hurts to know.  :)

In the meantime, we are already planning on our lineup of games to run for next year, including the new games coming out this year or next year.  Some of you would predict already, but feel free to mention the games anyways.  :P

The people who left got DQ'ed because they weren't taking the tournaments too seriously (I'm looking at the people who left the tournaments because they got lured in watching the Masquerade) or were just intimidated by the competition.

I remember talking to some FanimeCon attendees in Spirit of Japan who knew who some of us were.  Here were some of what they said:
- They had their friends enter some of our tournaments and they said that after seeing the competition, they couldn't bear how good some of these people are.  I told them that we encouraged people to stay and let people know that despite the competitive mindset, we are very cool and nice people wanting to help the fans.  :(
- Some of their friends didn't know the Masquerade was happening at the time of their tournaments, so they left without notification.  I told them that while the people enter these list of tournaments we have to offer, I did advise them on a plan to organize their next visit at FanimeCon.  Hopefully, they listened.

Time to provide multiple megaphones in high volume (or Autotuned mics).  :P

I wouldn't know about the competition in the other Tournaments, but there was not much in the Halo3 tournament. Though I was one of the better players. The only guy I know was better then me was Monk Inc, and he used to be Semi-pro at Halo and is top4 in Gears of War 2 MLG Pro League.
All I know is that I was about to leave because of Boredom. Too much wasted time. Again I can't say anything for the other Tournament, but the H3 tournament had no reason for anyone to be intimated and did not deserve any seriousness at all really.

;D Thanks for listening. Big tournys like smash and SF4 I think should start around 12-3pm so there's plenty of time to finish. I don't mind having a tourny start at 8-9pm but it shouldn't run or have to run till about 3am b/c then most people are too tired to play and have as much fun. One thing thats kind of good and bad w/ fanime is there is so much going on at once w/ the con in general. So sometimes I have to decide if I'm I going to enter this tourny or go to this panel or stage zero for some event or band or big event ext. lol but I'd rather have options then just one thing.

;D Games that I STRONGLY think should be in for tournys is
Blazblue
STREET FIGHTER 4
Tatsunoko vs Capcom (US version should be out buy then.)
Naruto Ultimate Ninja 5 (If it comes out to us this year which it might)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Smash Bros. Brawl (free for all or FUBAR was fun)
Rock, Paper, Scissors  :D (maybe not at the same time as a big tourny like smash)
Tekken 6

Tournies I would like to see as well.
Naruto Ultimate ninja 4
Naruto Ninja storm
Gears of War 2
Marvel vs Capcom 2

Tournies that probably won't see happen but I'd still love to see
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3
Guilty Gear: AC or AC plus
Virtua Fighter 5

As for the competition it doesn't seem too fierce to me. It seems fine it's not really all pro and it's not really weak so I'd say it's a good mix/variety. Of course there' going to be a few or some really good people in some tournies b/c the convention it's self is huge w/ over like 10,000 people or something so of course there going to be a few really good people. Some actually come to the convention just for the game tournies.  ;D

Guess I'll have my input on bailouts in tournaments.  Leaving a tournament without notification because...
If we knew beforehand that people were going to forfeit from the tournament, then time would have been a lot faster.  Those facing the people who forfeited would immediately be notified that they won next round by default, thus letting them take a breather and do other things until they are notified to come back.  Sadly, that wasn't the case for the majority.

======================

As far as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is concerned, though it is technically meant for online gameplay, isn't the standard for tournaments 4 Vs. 4 and no splitscreen (if applicable)?  If so, that's like 8 PS3s, X360s, PCs (whatever is standard) for 1 match!  We'll see what we can do to accommodate this, but we can't make such guarantee.

This applies the same to Gears of War 2.

Batman77, we'll take your suggestions in thought, though some or most of those games are already guaranteed tournament returns.  In the meantime, stay updated.  :)

Sincere apologies for that.  Now, to answer your previous question.

Though not mentioned in the rulesets, (http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,11947.msg315832.html#msg315832) it was presumed there was no level cap.  However, it was highly recommended to be at lvl 100 since that was what most (if not all) were using.  There may be some people using lvl 1 for the endeavor-based Pokemon.  Can T.O. correct this if I am wrong?

If we ran it on Pokemon Battle Revolution, that would be awesome since it auto-sets it to any level specified regardless of your Pokemon level.  However, there were some glitches that occurred when tested like Wi-Fi signal interferences, especially with Platinum thus refraining from using PBR.

All games for tournaments (especially Pokemon) are still under discussion.  But rest assured that more than half the games from 2009 as tournaments are expected a return for next year.  If you have any recommendations of any sort, feel free to post.  :)

EDIT: For anybody having any questions regarding specific tournaments AND the tournament organizer is busy, either wait for a bit until the T.O. is free or let us know about it.  eGaming has its own help desk section to answer your needs OR you could have came to us in person.  That way, we'll have one of our staffers come up to the tournament organizers OR either the higher-ups of eGaming passing the duties to one of the other staffers to forward the questions/concerns you have to the T.O. so that constant information is being passed.  Just keep that in mind next time.

just like fanime 09, we're limited on time, so we go through a filtering process to pick the games with the highest popularity/ hype/ relevance to fanime.
it's a maybe, but we'll see how many games will be more important.

brawl, pokemon, tekken, blazblue, sf4 already take up 4 of our slots by default.

;D Cool glad to know most of the ones I suggested are auto ins  ;D

Also is there a way there could be more prizes or even better prizes for that matter. Like maybe a pen or small poster or something for people in the top 4 or 8. I remember for the naruto (ult. ninja 3 I believe) tournament in 2008 in fanime they had copies of the game for top 4 or 8 ( although I didn't get one  :'( ) It'd be great if they had prizes like that again for top 4 or 8 or something. I don't know maybe ask the company or producer or something that makes that game to help sponsor that specific tourny by sending copies of that game or some type of swag or something.

I'm guessing giving away cash is not an option but would love that too for a prize  ;D

As far as the main prizes for the top 2 in most tournies. I liked the fact that you had a choice of what you get but for the gift card it was only good for playNtrade and a specific one in san jose. I live about 30-40 mins away from san jose so it wouldn't make much sense for me to drive down there and back just for a gift card thats about 25$ at that specific store. Is there a way the gift card could be for something like gamestop in general? B/c they're like the Mcdonalds of game stores and they're usually really close. I also wouldn't mind getting a gift card for best buy or something to buy anime or games with.  :)

We are already working on the ball for prizes right after FanimeCon 09 ended.  Given we had 17 eGaming tournaments that time (some with teams), we'll work on that on a high scale.  :)

(Quick Note: we gave out an XBox360 to the winner of SF4)

We'll keep the game, poster, and pen in mind.  Thanks for your info.

P.S. If known, excluding games, what was given out at FanimeCon 08?

Who knows?  Maybe we might get $$$ as a prize.  It all depends on what we get.

That was something that Play N Trade wanted to give out for FanimeCon and eGaming supporters.  Big thanks to them.  :)

We'll work on deals to ensure that the prizes are universal rather than specific.  :)

Aside from that there was a community box of donated prizes.  You can imagine how bad the prizes were by sunday since it was a community box they pick out of.

;D Games that I STRONGLY think should be in for tournys is
Blazblue yes
STREET FIGHTER 4 yes
Tatsunoko vs Capcom (US version should be out buy then.) yes
Naruto Ultimate Ninja 5 (If it comes out to us this year which it might) yes
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 don't care
Smash Bros. Brawl (free for all or FUBAR was fun) yes
Rock, Paper, Scissors  :D (maybe not at the same time as a big tourny like smash) yes
Tekken 6 yes

Tournies I would like to see as well.
Naruto Ultimate ninja 4  no
Naruto Ninja storm no if ninja 5 is out
Gears of War 2 don't care
Marvel vs Capcom 2 god no

Tournies that probably won't see happen but I'd still love to see
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 no
Guilty Gear: AC or AC plus god no
Virtua Fighter 5 maybe

what about
melty blood actress again
fate stay night unlimited codes

they both are great fighting games also.

;D Thanks for listening.

Some actually come to the convention just for the game tournies.  ;D

Looking at the requests ppl are making, this is probably the list of tourney games for next year(I am, in no way, affiliated nor connected to e-gaming; I'm just throwing a list out there, so take it with a grain of salt):

Marvel vs Capcom 2(classic or HD ver.)
Street Fighter 4(possibly Super SF IV)
Tekken 6
BlazBlue(v.1 or Continuum Shift)
Naruto (insert current iteration here)
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
Smash Bros. Brawl
Beatmania IIDX/DJ Hero(either or both)
Rock Band 2/Guitar Hero 5(either or both)
Melty Blood (insert current iteration here)
Halo 3
Gears of War 2

It has no competitive multiplayer made, just Co-Op Firefight Mode...

Hey, if you guys are going to the next general meeting, I can give you guys some tips on making the tourneys smoother.

Also, on otakuapprentice's list, I'd drop Virtua Fighter 5. If major tournaments can't even pull 10 people for the game (let alone the game is horribly obsolete now) I doubt Fanime could even pull 8. I'd replace that with the newly released Melty Blood Actress Again.

Street Fighter 4(possibly Super SF IV, if it comes out before then)

SSF4 is stated to come out March.  The PC version won't come out til Summer.

Even in Japan the game is going stale compared to Tekken 6 BR, because in reality it's the same complex game over and over again essentially. Basically it's so hard it doesn't bring in new players, and it has been the same group of people playing the game for years.

Also, they're not going to make a new game as console manufacturers think it's pretty much the same game, as why VF4 Evo was "Greatest Hits" right when it came out, making Sega lose money because it was a 15 dollar game (in reality it should have been a new priced game.)

Except, you can totally play all these games on a better platform, especially Doom. Doom on anything other than a PC for a tourney would be a joke. It would be impossible to strafe run, aim properly, and have all your relflexes on a stupid mp3 player. Also if Doom was ever a tournament for E-Gaming, I'd win.

I wouldnt call a one-shot-kill game a good game. Fun game yes, but it's imperfections make multiplayer gameplay take very little skill and makes it a horrible game when it comes to anything competitive.

Not every gun is one shot kill.

Halo has sticky grenades that are instant kills, halo has snipers which can instant kill, so don't bring that up.

Its a fun game which could work on 2v2 teams but that would require 4 consoles and 4 TVs which would be hard to scrounge up.

But see a Plasma Grenade does not kill unless you are standing right on top of it or it is stuck to you. A sniper will only kill with a head shot. Nor do you spawn with these weapons right off the bat. It is entirely different from a game where everything kills with 1 pull of the trigger.

And while in CoD not all weapons kill with one shot, it is effectively that. It usually takes only 3-5 from any gun to kill something, maybe a few more for other weapons, but regardless anyone can be killed within 2 seconds of being spotted with ease. Hell I could use a apparently "short range" sub-machine gun, attach a Silencer, and still kill the guy sniping my team from across the map. The game mechanics discourages skill while encouraging camping tactics and making the game into hide and seek with guns.

It is a fun game. I play CoD when Halo pisses me off. But it just isn't designed for competitive gameplay.

Of course, there would have to be a rule about keeping the last crawler so that this tournament doesn't run long. I would say that the team has one minute from the time the last zombie crawler is active before they have to kill it or else DQ.

If some how there could be 4 vs 4 tourny for MW2 at fanime .... I can grantee that there'd be at least 4 teams there and I'd and most of my friends would go ape.... uh ... they'd really go nuts and love it.  :D

Though we encourage people to bring portable gaming systems anyways, portable gaming itself heavily relies on how many attendees bring such devices.  Often, portable gaming usually takes place outside of eGaming.

The only times we have official portable gaming during eGaming grounds is if there's a tournament like Pokemon taking place or any other events relating to it.

Speaking of portable game tournaments, we will announce that soon.  Other than Pokemon, what other games would be good for portable gaming tournaments?

i know for sure that if you got a Tap Tap Revenge tournement going in 2010 i would participate.  ;D

While Tap Tap Revenge is a fun game, the timing window in the game is way too lenient, making perfect scoring too easy.  Of course, if competitive players miss, they will pretty much complain foul saying "touch error," potentially forcing redos (if it made a significant difference) or disputes.

Tournament-wise, the iPhone is never designed to handle it for obvious reasons.  The iPod Touch, maybe, but I still can't see it for tournament usage at this time.

Everyone should just play Doom, imo.

Hmmm, I am tempted to play Doom again.  I'll keep that in note.  :)

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

As for Call of Duty, if we actually pull such tournament, I presume people want a 2 Vs. 2 format, correct?  Or is it 4 Vs. 4!?  PC or XBox360?  Anyways, continue discussion.

There should be a Jump Ultimate Stars tournament on DS. I've been crying for one for years now lol.

As for MW2... a 2V2 on 360 would be nice. 4v4 would be optimal but that would require too many 360s/TVs and team drama.

No it hasn't, there's been no discussion. I'd discourage it anyway. Cloud would win anyways because of LOLOLOL infinite. It'd also have to be all base mode, since the game becomes broken with customization and gear.  VS. Battle Mode is the only way you can play the game fairly and it's hella boring and broken still. I was watching JP tournament vids about a year ago... boring crap ever.

Well because equipments and all that nonsense just screws everyone over in the fight (you with godly gear vs player with not so godly at all)

The rules we play by is pretty much default basic abilities, no equipment/summon/accessories, no ex-mode (cheapest way to win), no indoor stages (prevents constant bad camera view and good advantage for certain characters).

What is allowed is to set up your offensive abilities and all characters are allowed.

Basically the same idea as most smash tournaments. Think about it for a second.

"We are banning 70% of this game because if you allow any of it, the game is no longer playable".

YAY... you can beat cloud players. Can any of them land the infinite consistently? You realize that... Cloud wins instantly if he lands 1 of 2 hits on you at ANY TIME right? Infinite then link to Square attack means instawin

The only reason why Cloud's infinite works is because of abilities, the ability to shorten the time between attacks lets him do the infinite. If his basic abilities are set to default, then it's just a slash blow. Everyone can have an infinite if they had abilities on.

And a little off the mind, I hate Smash bros. :]

To those that want a CoD MW2 tourny, if this does happen, I would recommend not allowing the 25-kill streak "nuke". Also, don't bother with the PC edition - it requires an internet connection to even start LAN mode and then it will still lag because the host has to go through iwnet and then back.

As for Left4Dead2, I'll be honest: that's a tourny that should remain on the PC for simplicity's sake. But then requires getting said PC section back and either a Valve server or a prayer that every PC is updated pre-Con. The same could be said for Team Fortress 2...

There is a way to make a portables section viable, but other than tournaments, would it have a good use throughout the con?

Hmmm.

I haven't gotten a chance to play Jump US as much as I should (D'oh!), but is the game as broken as Jump SS?

Don't allow any kill streak powers. Period. There unbalanced and make the game even less skillful.

There are some characters/supports that are broken

If you ban those (like 2 characters and 3 supports) then it should be fine for everyone

No Kill/Death streaks. This HAS to be applied.

Eh, if someone is able to get a 25 kill streak…than a nuke should be allowed. If you are already getting face pwned to let someone get 25 kills and no deaths….you deserve to be nuked in my opinion.

Also, if you plan to pick apart the game and ban certain classes, perks, killstreak awards, weapons, etc etc..... Then you might as well choose an entirely different game.

If you can't handle certain classes, perks, killstreaks, etc....then obviously it is because you lack the skill to use them or defend against them. There is a way around everything. I've had plenty of my kill streak rewards taken out in a matter of seconds by skilled players. Honestly, the only thing I've grown to hate in the game is the damn shotguns in my face, but that is something I have to learn to deal with. There is a counter for just about everything.

But most of that discourages skill. A lot in this game is broken. Like the n00b tube. They didnt even attempt to fix that. Hell, they now have a n00b tubes pistol. Nothing balanced with that. It is not a matter of skill when you get shot with something overpowered. All it means is you die because of this unbalanced crap. Killstreak Awards only promote one-sidedness for no good reason other then you manged to shoot a few people in the back before someone shoots you in the back. Death streaks are even worse, rewarding a player for playing bad.
The outcome of a game should not be decided entirely on who gets the first 5 kills so you can force the other team into a spawn in the corner of the map. A game should be balanced regardless of who is winning the game. A losing team should be allowed to fight against the winning team on equal footing, allowing for a comebacks. Controlling the map and actual teamwork should mean more then camping in a corner and killing the guy that passes by.
I don't know maybe I just have too much of a competitive mind set for this

I for one hate n00b tubes, but I still come out on top in my KDR in most cases. The people who use them piss me off, but then again I probably piss off a ton of people by constantly running up behind them and stabbing them with a knife. If I get tubed, it's usually because I put myself in a bad spot or because I just ran out in front of some guy who had it.

Honestly though, it sounds to me like you are playing against a team of friends and experienced players. If you don't want teams to be uneven, I suggest Mercenary Team Deathmatch. It doesn't allow for friends to team up and make sides uneven. Also, (in most cases on just about all game types) a spawn cannot be camped for that long, because the game auto moves the spawn if the enemy rapes it or invades it.

Death streaks are nice. It isn't a reward for dying. It's a handicap for being owned. You only get it after 3-4 deaths in a row without a kill. How the hell is that a reward? The only thing you get is a pain killer, a free martyrdom grenade, or a chance at a final stand. Those don't even really help that much. I don't know what you are smoking.

Kill streaks are also awesome. It adds more fun and challenge to a game from both angles. Did you know that if the enemy quickly takes out what you use for a killstreak that it brings them quicker to a win much faster? Did you know that you can unlock an ability\perk called "One Man Army" in which you can switch classes on the fly in order to get the weapons to take out a heli or a plane, if you didnt already have it equipped? Did you know that a full supply of bullets from an LMG can take out a heli? Given, it leaves you without ammo afterwards, but you get a good amount of points by taking one out.

Honestly, it just sounds to me like you are mad because you aren't good at the game or don't know the maps as well as you should. Or maybe the other teams you play against consist of a bunch of friends who practice together? I dunno.

There are countless ways around campers and multiple ways to get to just about every position on every map. It's so easy to turn on Marathon, Light Weight, and Ninja and flank the enemy team just using a knife. (Try it sometime, you won't want to go back.)

The game in no way discourages skill. It's actually quite the opposite. I love those games where both teams are calling in Harriers and helicopters and airstrikes and the games are really close. If you don't learn to hide yourself well and you just jump out in the open, you will be shot quickly in most cases. It teaches you to stay well hidden, check behind every corner, watch your back, use teamwork when possible, etc etc. How the hell does it not require skill? It's not like getting a 7 person killstreak is all that easy. Unless of course the other team doesn't have any clue what they are doing.

;D Was going to say about the same thing glad you said it for me.

Also for the CoD:MW2 tourny I think regarding classes there are like about 5 default classes u start off. I think those should be the classes that should be open to use for the tourny b/c they're pre-set. Also I found out the way system link or split screen works in this one is kind of like online in the sense (but separate) that that's how u earn stuff like custom classes and so forth. So having the tourny on those 5-6 default classes would make things a lot easier and fair.

Just for clarification, I would assume the general rule thumb of suggesting rulesets (or discussions I read in the boards based on the disagreements between certain people Vs. the Smash community):

Do not immediately claim a "ban" on something too good or obscure, whether you agree with it or not.

Correct me if I am wrong or offensive.  Does not apply to adjustable options.

I can kind of agree with that. It *would* be unfair for some players to have access to weapons, perks, and killstreak rewards that the other players did not have access to. However, it'd be a lot more fun if all the characters being used for the tournament had most of the stuff unlocked.

What about a tournament with a "Retro" game? I've always liked Powerstone 2. (Although since Dreamcast is sort of a "Next Gen" console, I don't consider it truly "retro.") The gameplay is super easy, and both Beginners and Experienced players can have a decent chance at winning.

You could have 4 way Free For All for the preliminaries.

How is it a Next Gen console, it came out Last Gen!

Most Freeware is harder than what you may seem to think.  It just means free of use, but most freeware also states non-commercial use as well (unless permitted).

Anyways, we'll see what we can for Tyrian.  I remember playing this classic gem 15 years ago.  :)

Heh, I guess that was never a problem for me before, so I never thought about it that way. Also, here's the link to OpenTyrian (http://code.google.com/p/opentyrian/), which ports it from the DOS version, in case it might help.

Glad to see a fellow fan, though--it'll be good to give it some publicity, no one remembers it anymore, and it's such a shame.

That's a huge nono.  Its almost like "Hey guys! I want some fansubs at Anime Expo"!  If thats around people in the who runs the arcade would be pissed if something like that and lose people.  And also you'll put a huge risk not for the people at the department and also on behalf of the con itself if some company for lets say an employee of Konami wouldn't like that if lets say put some steps from the official game while you have an arcade just for that.  Just like Jonas its not on a legal case.

A couple of questions to ask:

What do you guys think of the idea of speed runs done in eGaming at a certain time?  Note that if this were to occur, there are time limits on what games can be played and what objectives must be accomplished.

Because numerous people have discussed with me about Team Tournaments on games technically 1 Vs 1 on-screen (mostly the fighting games), which games would you like to see done as 2vs2 team-tournaments?

Hmmmm, since I am getting PM's and emails recently this week, I guess I'll have to announce something to keep clear, often the same discussion relating to posts here:

I do understand that people want immediate responses.  If there hasn't been an immediate response, both PM or forum, that does not mean that we are simply laughing and scrapping the idea (I'd encourage you guys get facts first before announcing this so we are not left in confusion).  Often, it is currently in discussion between us staffers and other contributors outside of the forums.

Since this is a forum, you guys may be getting criticism from other people, including other staff members and mods.  That does not technically mean you should be discouraged (unless of course it's not con-appropriate).  Try not to feel hostile.  :)

We will make an official announcement soon in regards to what games will be featured (will be up-to-date afterwards).

Why concern about Team tournaments prizes... yet people are requesting 4 Vs 4?  Hmmm.  Anyways, this is something we are currently working on.  If anyone wish to contribute to making things happen, you guys are always welcome to do so.

Not all fighting games will be teams.  Possibly just a few.  :)

Are you referring to a Rock Band 2 Freestyle or a Rock Band 2 Score (or percentage) Attack?

I could play with either but if I had to choose then freestyle would probably be what I'd prefer to play on. I'm not too picky as long as I get to play good songs xP

We are currently working on a Freestyle section like last year.  We'll make the final decision soon on that.

;D I would love to see a call of duty:MW2 4 vs 4 tourny  :D

As mentioned before, we'll try to see what we can do.  Yes, we read your posts and how much you want this badly.  ^_^

= = = = = = =

NOTE: A new thread for eGaming will be made soon for official games and information.  This will be locked in a couple of weeks.  Stay tuned!

Still now I can see some of those PC games in action so whatever.

RE: PC gaming. Any chance there is going to be a Starcraft LAN or even better old Command and Conquer? Another thing that might be cool is The Battle for Wesnoth. This is another piece of Freeware, which I now after my lat suggestion understand there could be oproblems with, but it's one of the best old style combat strategy games and is really worth checking out. And then, of couse, you culd always have a machine dedicated solely to proselytizing Planescape: Torment.  ;)

My other question, though, is if there is going to be a LAN, can we get in on it if we bring our own units?

Having PC's is really a good chance to give some action to the gamers amoung us who don't do fighting or FPS's, and I thoughrougly support the move.

awwww its been years since i've played C&C or starcraft that'd be awesome; throw in a little Counterstrike and we'd be in business lol.  But I'm also interested in the LAN; as they say the more the merrier

A little CS should be fine, but personally, I'd be pretty disappointed if this was used just for more FPS's. Thats just my two cents, though.

For PC Gaming (and Console gaming as well), we vary the games to the open public from a wide variety.  We aren't just focusing on just one genre.  ^_^

I have no doubt this is true, but what I'm hoping for is that the PC's used to expand beyond those Genera's available on the Consuls, and not simply more of the same. I have faith in the eGaming department, though.

VERY IMPORTANT!!

(http://www.twittericon.com/image/twitter223.gif) (http://twitter.com/fanime_egaming)

eGaming information on the forum is updated until the con starts.  Forum updates may or may not be possible during con, varying upon Internet connection on dedicated areas.  In addition, some cell phones with Internet cannot read forum code at all.

However, the Twitter account WILL BE CONSTANTLY UPDATING, EVEN DURING CON!  It will have the links and small feeds of eGaming announcements before con.  During con, it will announce some of the following:
There's more.  This is another way to inform you guys, in case you didn't get the information from us somehow.  I cannot guarantee reception issues though.

e-gaming twitter? o.o

Indeed!  Gives people a less excuse for not being informed.

I don't know if any of us know about those games enough nor if there's a strong enough scene for someone to run it and for us to set up some tournament rules.  We'll discuss it at the next meeting.

Yes.  It has been mentioned several times on this thread.  So far, only Pokemon has been confirmed.  The rest has yet to be confirmed.  With the exception of Pokemon, the real questions are:
- How many people have the copies of those specific games like Dissidia: FF and Jump Ultimate Stars?  No, we won't be able to provide you guys with copies.
- How many people support those games in a tournament stance?

Hey Jonas! It's vbo. Finally got me one of these thingies. Btw, is there any confirmation on how many PCs are available for PC gaming?

Once we get full confirmation on the setup, we'll make the announcement.

I'd join the Rock Band 2 tourney if I had a band to play with (people who play hard or expert) btw on the 360 I definitely play expert and I'm a "platinum artist" with a billion fans on career mode xD (took forever to get that tho...) never did like bragging just putting it out there if someone needed a guitarist/bassist on expert for that....

Are you referring to a Rock Band 2 Freestyle or a Rock Band 2 Score (or percentage) Attack?

Will there be a percentage attack tournament version? I have a full expert band that's willing to join if there is one.

Currently, there wasn't a discussion for it until now.  I know that Open Mic Section and Freestyle Contest has been done in the past.  Given how difficult (albeit expensive) a percentage attack is to run professionally (score attack would be impossible), we'll see what we can do.  ^_^

Is there going to be a Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen/Clash of Ninja tourny?  If not, could we at least have a game running sometime during the con?  I was disappointed with its disappearance last year.

I'd also like to suggest a Super Smash Bros Melee tournament.  I don't know how popular Melee is anymore, but I like it a lot better than Brawl.

How would that be impossible to do a percentage attack? Wouldn't you just have two bands go 1v1 and compare scores in order to advance?

Percentage (the number of hit notes) is NOT the same thing as Score (hit + streak multiplier + overdrive + bonus points);

There's a LOT to a competition than just play.  I'll respond to this later once a cope of replies come in.
