Darn! beaten to the punch [forgive the pun]

I just found the Marvel Vs Capcom 3 trailer as well :P

here's the website i found info on: http://360.kombo.com/article.php?artid=18825

kinda funny how the teaser has fights between:

Wolverine Vs. Ryu
Morrigan Vs. Iron Man
Hulk Vs. Chris Redfield

I'm sure there will be a joke midget character, like servbot or someone from the megaman universe.

if anything I'm curious who if anyone obscure they will pull out of the marvel universe now that Marvel is owned by Disney...

would you avoid this game if they stuck some random Disney character in this game? or would you enjoy it more knowing that you could take anyone from either the marvel or capcom universe to beat the living day lights out of it?

I wouldn't avoid this game if it had Disney characters but I can almost guarantee there won't be any.

The trailer shows shadows of other characters and the "midget" character for Capcom will most likely be Viewtiful Joe (seen on the far left of the Capcom shadows).

I'm hoping for a game with TvC style gameplay but faster and the MvC2 button config but with a Subspace Emmisary style storyline.

The games graphics will be trying to look most like the trailer's comic book feel which looks very interesting and I hope they can pull it off successfully.

as much as they want to claim that this game will be balanced- im sure theres gonna be AT LEAST one broken character...

we should start a betting pool and guess who it is. :P

It matters how they decide they want to go with the game. If you played TvC th...

actually no...

If you're KNOWLEDGEABLE about TVC then you'd know there really isn't a broken character in the game at all. Even in the original one, although Karas had some stupid things about him, he wasn't broken at all. Especially with the Megacrush feature, and the fact that he had counter characters(like Jun)...

No one is broken in the US version at all... It's not super balanced or anything, but it's not terrible(almost on par with Guilty Gear level balancing). There's also no joke character in TvC either. Roll is the closest, and she's very playable.

So it's a matter of what design Capcom wants to go with. If they go the route of MvC2 where they just want to throw a bunch of stuff together and let all hell break loose and not worry about balance... then who knows. But if they go TvC route and attempt to make an actual balanced fighting game and stuff...

Weird the rest of my post disappeared.

Seeing that it looks obvious they're using TvC's modeling scheme... and according to Capcom 1 character takes about 8 months to do using this scheme... They're not going the MvC2 route where they can just put in 100 sprites and let madness ensue. The game will probably be much like TvC... probably won't be a huge cast, maybe like 30ish at most?

I seriously hope they only have one character from each series

For the Mega Man series, I hope they have X or X series Zero

They do have Ryu confirmed (obviously) and one many of the outlines of Chun Li but I guess they can say she is from SF2 and Ryu is from SF1

They could do that with Mega Man X from the X series and Tron Bonne from the Legends series but I'd rather have more variety

A MvC game without Legends Megaman? I don't see it happening...
Still I demand Tron Bonne. Shes just to pro to not be in it.

they ALSO asked me to reserve [put a $5 deposit] towards MVC3.

which isnt going to be released until sometime in 2011   ::)

This afternoon I am playing Endless Battle vs one of my friends who is pretty good and mained Bison in vanilla.

So its the final round in the tied match and he is playing as Bison and I'm playing Dudley. He attempts to EX stomp and I stuffed it with a rose. He attempts to heavy stomp and I throw another rose and stop him in his place, I then Ex Machine Gun into light machine gun into ultra for the win.

I felt awesome doing it considering I've never played Dudley in 3S and totally came back for the win.

I picked up Super and competed at the Gamestop midnight launch tournament at the Gamestop on Homestead (in/near Santa Clara) and got 4th place. I think there were like 14 people in the tourney and the guy who won is one of the best Sagats in NorCal (someone said this, his name was schunchen?).

Havent played Halo for over 2 months now though.
But with Reach Beta on the horizon i will have plenty to occupy me.
But when it comes to fighters I head over to MvC2.

Then why are you even posting. Though I find it funny that you'd rather play 2 super broken games... over the non-broken game. But it's not like you can play any of these at a decent level any way, so who cares.

I should really get SSF4 already, but when I do I'll stop doing needed work.

Speaking of SSFIV, it would have been nice to know about the LE dojo edition via Capcom's site earlier before it sold out. Nothing super amazing but it beats the hell out of ...ugh... the finger puppets Gamestop was offering for pre-ordering =___=;

Probably pick this game up and check it out in a few days after finals are done and gone with...

picked up SSF4 last night-

liked the new intro and intrigued by the new character "Juri" - found it funny she reminded me Kim from the CvS2 series. that and she's freaking crazy. :P

i found it ironic that i didnt have to beat the game with every characters to unlock other chracters [which is nice] but as usual i still feel that the endings [ i only saw Juri & Chun-Li ] but i guess thats what RPGs are for.

Jesus Christ so much Anti-SF4 hate in here...

I really just can't stand Street Fighter 4 is all. It is boring and the graphics make me cry inside.

And it is better to say that I don't play Fighting Games much period. I'm a FPS guy. I only play fighting games on the side. Though I am hoping for MvC3 to be somewhat balanced without being boring so I can get into fighting games more. That is if Reach blows which I think is a good chance...

Then why are you even talking, except to show how narrow minded and ignorant you are?

SF4 is boring... yet, A3 isn't? This of course is coming from someone who clearly doesn't know anything about fighting games. A3 is build meter and range until someone whiffs something so you can VC into CC infinite for 60seconds to victory. Why do you even care about balance anyways? You don't even understand the balance, because like you said, you like A3, which is terribly unbalanced.

I don't care if you hate SF4, I just hate when ignorant people speak ignorantly about stuff.

Hmm, IC.

Well I havent played A3 in years so maybe it isnt what I remember it to be, but I mainly play vs Computer or a Few friends who also have no idea about fighting games, so I can't say I can know much about how balanced it is because I have never seen the game played well.
Though when I think about it I really never had fun with Street Fighter Games anyways, so it really doesnt matter which one I prefer because I wouldnt play any of them now.

But whatever this thread does not need anymore of this so I'll let the topic drop.

Getting used to timing on links again, since they're slightly different for some... is hard.

Kinda sad about some of the changes for Seth, but i'm dropping him as my main anyways, so m'eh.

I'm maining Dictator, Chun Li, and Rose. Adon is my newest experiment as of late. Cody is pretty cool and Guy/Ibuki are a little too technical for me (to use on a constant basis).

so any interesting replays to speak of yet?

getting used to all the new modes, which are kinda cool, and im learning how lame i am watching other players in the endless or team battles.

my personal win/loss ratio sucks, but thats what i get for not playing overly aggressively.

any of you guys willing to help train me? assuming you guys arent already pwning people around the internets.

1 - Dudley rose taunt shenanigans
2 - Rose Soul Satellite shenanigans
3 - My Rose beating a pretty good Blanka player
4 - One of my characters getting beat by a very good Chun Li

I am highly considering buying a Fightstick, sense the 360 controller is useless for anything that takes precision that is not a Shooter.
From what I am reading, the best non-custom fightstick to get would be the MadCatz Tournament Edition Fightsticks. Does this sound correct or are there better options?

I am highly considering buying a Fightstick, sense the 360 controller is useless for anything that takes precision that is not a Shooter.
From what I am reading, the best non-custom fightstick to get would be the MadCatz Tournament Edition Fightsticks. Does this sound correct or are there better options?

The standard TE was only $100 for a long time on Amazon

Just look around for deals, they're very much worth it

If you follow the communities, Markman releases promo codes you can use to get a TE, it'll be a little under 100% with the discount, or about 110 for the Super edition of the TE.

Also for those that didn't see...

Yeah, tell me more

I made that for my SE before I sold it. I plan on remaking it for my TE eventually... but I really like the MvC art so I might not.

Fight Pad =/= Tournament Edition Arcade Stick

but yes, the TE does come with 8 buttons so you can switch between the slanted Japanese button layout (the left 6 buttons) or the American layout (the right buttons AKA straight six). You only need six buttons on any format. Using the other two buttons for any reason will develop bad habits and make you look like a scrub.

Went to SF State today. Played some kid and beat him 19-1 vs his Ragna using Noel. Then he starts using Tager on easy modo and dropping 360 colliders. I dunno what was more sad, me losing or him winning =_=;

Oh and MvC3? Yeah T. Bonne I'll pick her up. I been using her as T. Bonne/Juggy/Cable before in MvC2. Not as much as my Blackheart/Cable/Commando but still fun to use.

Characters are fine and I like the challenge. Beating top tier chars is actually really satisfying and I get compliments and pats on the back at SF State, Fanime, MGL, SVGL and on PSN quite a bit even if I do lose sometimes 4-5 games in a row. People know a good player when they see one and losing doesn't mean you suck. It's giving someone the challenge what makes the game fun regardless of the outcome. It doesn't really matter who gets "rebalanced" or what not. All it matters is that you enjoy the char(s) you main and use. I've talked to many people who wish RA and BA would get nerfed but honestly, "bring it".

EDIT: And oh, I've gotten spanked by amazing Rachel players. Just means I got a little gap to fill in though =P

I am forgetful of the differences between the Fighting Communities and FPS Communities. If it was Halo there would be a lot of screaming and people talking about the size of each others genitals for no apparent reason. Except for maybe MLG playlist in Halo 3. That was a good environment.

As for balance, it just bothers me, no matter how slight the difference...
Title: Re: GET HYPE! General fighting game chat thread
Post by: Mizuki on January 10, 2011, 08:52:37 PM
Balance in fighting games is hard to get right. If everything was perfectly balanced on a 50/50 fighting field, gameplay would be boring, mediocre, and boring. It would just be Street Fighter 1. Every character would have the same moves, there would be no advantages nor disadvantages. What makes a fighting game good? Is it the imbalance that is present, but yet the imbalance does not hinder the characters ability to win and perform even if it is difficult for the character to win?.

Games that have imbalance, that aren't lopsided too hard, such as Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting, many of the characters in the game are playable, and can win, some characters just have a harder time; but while in a fighting game like Marvel vs Capcom 2, not every character is playable, and each character tier is obviously better than the tier below them. While Marvel vs Capcom 2 has a roster that has tier of characters that are almost unbeatable by the ones below them (exception would be like Top/high mid can fight each other) the "playable" tier is a quite big choice of characters.

I've pondered deep about imbalance, and it's really really hard to get right without constant testing and thinking, and if done wrong, you can end up with Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix.

Even in First Person Shooters there are imbalances. I'll use Quake Team Fortress for an example, since it was one of the first games I took kind of seriously and thought a lot about. There are different classes, and each have their own unique abilities. Some classes just perform better against certain others. Even in deathmatch type games such as Doom where every player has the same amount of things the other players can do, it's imbalanced by where you spawn, what weapon is near you, what part of the map you are on, etc.

Games need imbalance to be enjoyable, and good, it's what makes games different. Would a fight between two people same size, same build, same technique be fun? Lets say they can only throw right jabs, and are only able to punch the other person in the stomach, and can only move back or forth. I wouldn't want to watch that fight.

Very Aware.
It is impossible to balance a fighting game perfectly without there being a no variety. But it can be balance it to insignificant levels. Problem being that at least as far as I know, almost no fighting games actually have balance patches, from my understanding to keep it true to the Arcade game. A main reason I wanted to get into Blazblue sense it was apparently going to be set up for balance patches to my understanding.
I don't think imbalance is what makes fighting games fun. It is variety. It is just that variety leads to imbalances in this case.

Some shooters can be unbalanced. Pending on game design, map design, and other factors. Though they can certainly be extremely balanced, at least for team games on Symmetrical or well designed Asymmetrical maps. Though this assumes that the game was designed in a fashion to allow balance, and that it's mechanics are not broken. FPS are all about map control, and as long as it well designed, players have all the same options available, and the game mechanics are not broken then there is balance. Talking in terms of Team Games of course. FFAs cannot really be balanced.

But that is a different topic entirely.

Impossible to realistically balance a game. Balance patches... hahahaha... balance patches tend to create new unbalances. Let's do the Viscant example since it's so easy to understand.

MvC2. Storm/Mags/Sent/Cable easily the top 4 chars in the game. Ok. let's change those chars. So that they're no so over powered. Or maybe, let's ban them. Ok... now that is done... Blackheart, Strider, Doom, Iron Man are super broken. Ok... rebalance them, then Cammy and other pixies become broken.

Rebalancing is near impossible, and almost every "rebalance" ever done has just created a different role of unbalance. A3 Upper, STHD, EVERY Guilty Gear, etc. etc. etc.

So what are you asking for? Even in "balanced" games, there's still imbalances. ST is considered one of the most balanced games ever. But there are super horrible matchups in the game. Ryu vs. Honda? Ryu just dominates. Blanka vs. Honda? Blanka has almost no chance. O.Sagat vs. Gief? Yeah, not even a match.

Pretty much just enjoy the game for what it is is moral of the story. You can either pick characters you like, pick characters that have good matchups against other chars, both or don't play the game at all. It's really up to the individual to decide if they want to keep playing and not the responsibility of the game to change things until the person is happy with what they have to work with. That's just too much of a cop out. And honestly if you're going to play a character you like, win or lose, tier and all that bull crap doesn't really matter in the end. People know what a good and bad match up in CS is already by now. Two players can be equally skilled and in fact one can be more skilled overall as a player of that char than the other person and still can end up losing because well... a bad match up is still a bad match up. Truth be told after playing Noel in CS for a few days, I really wanted to quit. But then I thought back to when I "fell in love" with her character back in 09 at Fanime, I knew I wanted to learn and main her when I saw her in action. Everyone wants to win sure. You can go ahead and pick a sub char with a better match up sure, but people who quit using a character completely or even playing the game for that matter because they can't win more than they want I really don't take too much liking to.

Anyways on the subject of all this talk about balance and tiers and what not, I went to SF State again today and a pretty decent Litchi player showed up but picked Haz instead of Litchi saying it would be a bad match up for Noel. After a few games vs Haz, I had to literally tell him to play Litchi cause I don't mind a challenge and I'm fine playing against any char. For the next hour we pretty much exchanged wins and losses evenly. He had some damn good B&B with Litchi as well with 4K+ combos and corner traps consistently. Both left with hand shakes and names exchanged. Fun times in the past few visits to Rack and Cue that's for sure.

It is true that balance patches can lead to other unbalances, but you can't expect a game to be balanced in just one attempt. It is a constant process of patches coming thru that begins to effect the game as a whole. While you will never balance the game completely of course, you can potentially leave it in a better state then what it was.

And you can potentially leave it at a state that is WORSE off than it was. See ST:HD, SFZ3: Upper, Super Street Fighter, A2 Gold, MvC2 Dreamcast version, MvC2 PS2/Xbox, 3S Dreamcast version, Soul Calibur II post ver 2.1, etc.

Especially when things take years to actually figure out realistically, "balance patches" are basically an excuse for companies to release subpar products with the notion of "well we can just fix it later".

Balance *IS* important, but most games are released in a way that they're not so unbalanced that characters are useless, and maybe only 1 or 2 are really useless... but most importantly the top tier are not so godly that they completely dominate(this is the most important thing). Blazblue's upgrade shifted tiers... but realistically, it was just as unbalanced(or balanced) as it was in CS, there was just a change in how the game played and diff chars were top. Well except Arakune who is still top.

More important than "tiers" is matchups. Because even if a character is top tier, if 1 character beats them badly, then who cares? Learn the game for what it is. If they "rebalance" or "upgrade" or "make it worse" then you learn that game and how it works. The games are static, it's up to the player to be dynamic.

If anyone here has played in a tournament, are we expected to use sticks or are pads also useable?

Pads are also usable.  It's definitely not restricted to just pad.  The Hit Box Stickless Flat Pads, however, remains in current debate for MvC3 only. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYLajPO3AnU&feature=player_embedded)

I guess it's worth a shot... anyone here still keep up with Soul Calibur IV? SCIV is my main fighting game, though I'm pretty okay in Brawl, and I at least know some combos in MvC3.

Got a question, might be a stupid one but here goes: Will there be any MVC3 or BlazBlue tournament this year? If there is any tournament for one or both of those games, where do I sign up?  ???

MvC3 Tournament is confirmed for Sunday at 6:00 PM.
BlazBlue has not been listed as of yet.

Sign-Ups will take place at eGaming.  We have a tournament registration desk.  We do not do pre-registers.

For anything eGaming related, please go to the official eGaming thread:

People still play Soul Calibur 4? Everyone I knew that played it dropped it because the community tore itself apart and they're probably just as dumb as the Smash scene.

1. How quickly do slots fill up?
2. If I'm eliminated, is it okay for me to leave?

No, if you're eliminated you must stay there no matter what. Once you sign up, you are stuck at the convention e-gaming hall until the con ends. You can't even go to the bathroom or back to your hotel or anything. You sign your life away to e-gaming staff and you must name your first born son after JT Chinoy or daughter after Jonas.

I don't think any tournament at fanime has ever filled up completely, but that could be wrong. I know SF4 one year almost hit cap.

But this thread and section has nothing to do with e-gaming. All e-gaming questions are to go in the general programming section of the forum,so please refrain from posting about this in this section.

Ok anyone wanna play some BB at the con? I'm seriously done with this online lag crap. Can't do Haida loop at all. I don't even give a shit if I fight a dozen rags as long as it's offline... Jesus Christ maybe the lag is due to PSN or something... that or one of the 10 people on the 3 floors of this building using the same internet is downloading, streaming, whatever the **** else.

MBAA Current Code is being loketested in select arcades in Japan
BBCS2 patch is released for consoles
Bob Sagat is leaked to be in SFxT
Arcana Heart 3 on sale on PSN store (it was released day before psn crash)
Daigo calls out US in MvC3
SSF4 AE is still a boring slopfest

Daigo MvC3 level is pretty good. He'll lose to our top players right now, but seeing that he apparently only picked up the game 2 weeks ago, it's pretty good. It's also funny he mains Phoenix.

I'm thinking about getting AH3. I really liked the first game, it was the first fighting game I took seriously (i.e. beyond mashing the buttons on the MvC arcade cabinets at hotels). I mained Maori/Lang-Gong.

Mei Fang is all about links now, so if you want to do like a hundred 1frame links in your bnb, feel free to keep playing her. Fire Mei is still a very solid choice. If you need any more info about the game check here. http://arcana.mizuumi.net/wiki/Main_Page

No no, Maori is the priestess. I heard she got a boost in her keepaway game in 3.

And to be honest, I originally chose Fire for her because she could spam unblockable launchers. The supers work well with combos off of Maori's top string, though. If I ever actually got serious, I'd probably look for a better Arcana.

If you play AH3 Maori, you probably want to look towards flower.  Flower Maori is retarded cause you can't get counter hit & get to burst more often.  You also get a super that's essentially an unpassable wall in front of her & sets up tech traps.  Other than that, I guess you could choose any of the good arcana for anyone like love, plant, or wind.

I'll take this chance to plug the monthly NorCal BBCS/GGAC/MBAA/AH3 ranbat series: Norcal Install.  AH3 entrants have been declining the last two months, so I encourage people to come. http://www.dustloop.com/forums/showthread.php?10419

Moving into the realm of 3D...

I just got Tekken 6 a couple of months ago. I got distracted when MvC3 came out, but it's pretty fun. I'm considering maining Lee, I like light, fast characters in this game.

I haven't been into Tekken since Tekken Tag Tournament(Can't wait for two^-^) It's really hard for me to pick up and keep playing a 3d fighter nowadays. Not to mention all the 2d fighters that I did play didn't have a wide enough local community.

But I'll throw down in some Arcana Heart 3(BRAH-ING-IT) I miss playing that game but I had to always play online against Japanese players and the lag got old...That and I got tired of fighting Akane all the time =_=

I've been wondering is there going to be other players that want to go for a few rounds of MVC3 to prepare for the tournament at Fanime? It'd be even better if we can practice at the convention a few days before the tournament takes place.

Awesome. I definitely need the practice against actual players. Online is just an underwater fight fest with too much delay on attacks :/ Even though I'll most likely lose, can't wait to have a couple of matches against other players. This week needs to fast forward to Thursday already.  :P

I've been seeing a lot of Wolvies and Weskers. And man, completely forgot Arthur was in the game lol  :P He's a pretty underrated character but he has a lot of potential for ranged pressure IMO. Can't wait to improve my Morrigan gameplay.
