Title: Missed Connections Fanime 2012
Post by: h-chan on May 27, 2012, 11:40:29 PM
I felt like this should totally exist. The craigslist version is generally pretty romantic. For those of you who don't know what this is, it is a thread where you can reach out to a person you saw at con that you would like to get to know outside of con. It doesn't matter if you actually talked to them or you just really wanted to, but didn't have the courage or otherwise. Let's make <3 connections!
If they were a cosplayer, please include their character name and series they were from if you know it. Otherwise do your best to describe them along with the time and location you spotted them. Feel free to add a photo of them or yourself for reference. If you are a friend of someone mentioned in the thread, please make sure they see "their" post!

To the Kurono Kei cosplay of Gantz I saw late Saturday evening -

I yelled "I love you Kei!" to which you turned around and smiled. A while later you passed by again and sweetly gave me the hug I requested. Damn you are cute (especially when you smile)! If you see this message, PM me  ;)

To the badass guy in the dealer's hall who conversed with me about my Revy costume. Should totally add me on Facebook!

Uhm... the girl I met in the line who did my Revy tattoo. You were awesome, I believe I still have your DeviantArt.

To the guy with the headphones who helped me wave my Polish flag to cover the signs of the protesters. I kept seeing you in the elevators.

Anyone who hugged me in my Ryo-Ohki space rabbit costume

THE PERSON IN THE ORANGE FUR WOLF SUIT THING! Omg I saw you at the con 40+ times, the first time I saw you at Jack In The Box then I just kept running into you. Add me O_O seriously you're awesome.

And any Gong Show participants.

Shoot me a message so I can get you on my Facebook/youtube/thing. <3

H'okay.

The Sailor Mercury that I took a picture with as Radical Ed on Friday and on Sunday. You were really cool. Just wanted to inform you of that in case you didn't already know.

The red haired guy that was dressed up as some blue haired guy with a blue mask from Yaoi Bingo on Saturday night. You asked me to erase a virus from your computer and you promised me chocolate. I want my chocolate. Also, you were extremely funny, and I can appreciate that. Good job, you.

EDIT: Also, the short-haired blonde guy in the leather jacket who carried me on Friday night. I don't know if I gave you the impression that I was irritated at you or anything for carrying me, but I want you to know it was totes fine, I get picked up randomly and carried all the time by my friends on a pretty regular basis, and I didn't mind at all. Just wanted to clear that up.

It may seem few and far between but I did want to give a few small shoutouts:

First to the group around midnight-1am on Saturday over at the Hilton that took the time to chat with me while I was waiting for a friend of mine to show up (and the suggestion of heading over to the rave to "shake my thang", really wanted to if I didn't feel so tired at that time.)

Another shoutout to the girl that was working the entrance door to E-gaming on Saturday afternoon that told me to arch my back and stick out my butt while I was in costume. Took the advice and applied it to the rest of the photos people took of me on Saturday and Sunday.

If I remember any more, I'll go ahead and make the shoutouts.

Sanji in the flower print shirt, you seriously made that One Piece Gathering for me. Thank you! c: I was the Nami in the White Skirt.

^-^ I wish I would of gotten your name, lol.

And the Nami who was dressed up in the same outfit as me, that was pretty great.

& The wonderful bunch of people I got stuck in the Marriott Elevator with for an hour! Great people. c: ESP, the cool pool guys.
& The hottub party we had on Sunday night. ^-^

First off, to the Spitter at the Valve Gathering (x) (http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4qr5mNwDa1qk2gpto1_1280.jpg) You were the only one but I want to say how I fucking appreciate your costume and if you don't mind talking to a creeper like me, I'd love if you hit me up! Friends, naturally.

And to the dudes on Sunday (one of them already found me on tumblr):
YOU guys made my Sunday fucking amazing and I hope we could keep in contact! I only got one of your names, and it was the man next to the woman crouching in black to her right (not the dude to the suitcase.) Nick, wasn't it? You kept calling me queer (I know, it was because of my cosplay) but I wish I could of got your dudes' DA or tumblr or something. You guys were fucking AMAZING.

I've always thought those post on Craigslist had absolutely no chance of connecting people...and yet I actually feel compelled to try this.

I ran into the most amazing Yuna on Sunday night (at like 11:00pm) in the gaming hall and can't stop thinking about her. Its crazy that you see hundreds and hundreds of people but one just gets stuck in your head.

Not only are you a great dancer (as I mentioned to you), but you also have a beautiful smile. I wanted to talk to you more when I took your picture, but you were busy dancing and talking to friends. I was waiting for the right timing and then next thing I know you left the hall. I looked for you today at the Con with no success.

If you ever read this, I would love to actually talk to you sometime.

I'm looking for a short gal with glasses who took a pic of me on saturday. I was wearing a butler costume with large black angel wings. I was also with a guy in a long red cape with a robotic left arm. You asked about if I was going to the Ball on sunday and said you'd be in an all black dress, which sadly I couldn't find you while at the Ball. I had described to you that I was going to be in an all black suit with a red bowtie. If you are here in this forum PLEASE PM me! I want to apologize for not being able to dance with you!

To all the Avatar cosplayers new gen and old gen! I absolutely loved our unofficial gathering! You guys and gals were all amazing! (I was a Korra) and to the Amon that took my bending away, you are awesome!! XD I found out today I bruised my knees when I dropped down hahaha. Worth it. I also believe it was the same Amon that put his arm around myself and another Korra during one of the group shots. XD.
I need more Avatar friends to nerd out with.

Last one I promise, the Toph and Beifong... I love you ladies!

To the Journey spirit who handed out scarf pieces to people who took their picture:

You absolutely made my whole trip down from the hotel on Saturday night worth it. Thank you for adding to my already wonderful con, and I will take very good care of the scarf piece X3

Sincerely, Journey fan from the Marriott who loved your costume and the time and detail you put into making to glow <3

I totally made an account to do this.

I met you while dancing on Saturday night at the dance.  It must of been some crazy hour in the morning; maybe 1am?  You were a fantastic dancer, and I loved your blue eye contacts.  You were dressed as a ninja, I would of been able to recognize you if you had taken off your facemask.  I have to admit though, the mystery was what made it so cool.

I was in my "casual Rarity" outfit.  I didn't catch your name after I left for some water.  I was lucky to run into you again in the game room, and when I asked for your name, you said, "Truth".  You were surprised to see I was a "pegasister" (though the term you said was "brony", haha).  I wasn't sure if that's what you said, given that it was 3am, my 3 hours of sleep, or what have you, but I hoped I would meet you again.  You asked for my facebook but I was too tired to sit down and try to figure out how to find me (as it is difficult).  Unfortunately I didn't wear the same outfit as I woke too late, and I never saw you again.  If you are reading this, or if you knew someone who was looking for a purple-haired unicorn, PM me.  I'll show a photo. :]

Hope to meet you again, you were awesome.

Mod edit: its called a dance

I met a girl playing a Harmonica in front of Fanime May 26th, Saturday. She had a cup for collecting change and other tips people would give her as she played her Harmonica inside a Haruhi Style School Uniform. You were gentle and kind enough to allow me to take a picture. I left a fair tip, I wish it was a larger bill. My true regret was not offering you my phone number or a name. I would love to hear your Harmonica one more time, Harmonica Girl.
Even though I just met you, and it might have been crazy, I wish you would call me, maybe, Harmonica Girl.

I registered just to make this... Because there's a few people I wanted to address.

First is Joe Knoll, who I said I would find and hang out with for a bit on one of the days, but for the life of me COULD NOT FIND. I guess it's a big con, but I still feel a little bad for not trying harder. > 3 <
Second is the guy I made friends with while playing Soul Calibur in my Patroklos (... from Soul Calibur.) Costume. He had so many nice things to say, I wish I even had the chance to thank him before he had to leave. :c
Last is every photographer / film artist who took photos / videos of me. I got a lot of your information on my brother's iPod, but when he thought I'd written them down he deleted the memo. So now, I have no information or a way to write a formal thank you note to those people, which I really wish I could have done D:

And just... a general thanks to everyone who complimented me. Everyone at this con is so nice, it's literally one of the best places on earth!

To the girl that asked me directions to the Black and White Ball that was wearing a Loltia dress on Sunday Night.

I wish I was able to talk to you longer. I though that we would be able to get to know each other at the dance, but you were stopped by Black and White Ball Fanime staff saying that your dress was 2in too short and you were not able to come in. I should have walked out of the ball and spent the evening with you, but I thought about it too late.

I was wearing black shoes, black slacks, and a button short sleeve black shirt. I am 6ft 3in tall and half Asian/half white.

I hope you see this message and would be willing to pm me. It would be great to chat with you again.

This seems pretty legit. I wanna try since I pretty much don't trust CL too much haha

This is to all the girls I danced with at the Black and White Ball(That sounds really bad haha) Anyway, I was the Sasuke in the formal wear. I had red contacts(aka Sharingan) and the Sasuke wig with some pink streaks in it. I think it'd be nice to get to know you girls better, I feel as though our conversations were cut off right when they were getting going. Hopefully one of you sees this  :)

This shout out is going to all the 10th doctors from Doctor Who Cosplayers. You guys were freakin sexy. Especially the 10th doctor that was eating ice cream/ yogurt who waved at me when my friend honked the horn to get your attention for me. :D I was in the blue car.
I think yogurt/Ice Cream 10th Doctor was also the same one walking in the dealer's hall with Captain Jack Harkness. You rock that cute face!

I've got two:

- To the Waldo cosplayer in line behind me at pre-reg on Friday: I had a lot of fun chatting with you and counting up how many people walked by and yelled "I FOUND YOU!"  (I believe we made it to fifty in about an hour and a half?)  It made the two and a half hour wait go by a little quicker, haha.  I had to rush off as soon as we got to the front of the line, so I didn't get a chance to catch any of your contact info and I'd like to keep in touch!

- Not necessarily something that needs following up, but to the incredible Ezio cosplayer who walked by our little ragtag Persona 4 group on the first floor of the con hall really late on Sunday night/Monday morning: We jokingly called out "ASSASSINO!" as you walked by and you pretty much had the best reaction I've ever seen.  Jumping behind the closest pillar, hiding for a few seconds, and then walking off slowly while blending the whole way?  You had us in stitches, and we'd had a really terrible night, so thank you so much for making us laugh.

Worth a shot!

There was a Big Macintosh cosplayer who was also Dirk Strider for the Black and White Ball; he'd probably recognize me as the Galloping Gala Pinkie Pie, since we shared a couple of dances at Ball. He had asked for my number but I didn't have my phone on me (nor had my number memorized) and I realized too late that I could've just given him my email or facebook or something. TAT; I really enjoyed his company that evening and would love to keep in touch. :3

Odds are this won't be read by the person I'm thinking of, but I can't shake the feeling of regret I got from not being able to apologize. I was wearing a bright-red silky shirt/dress thing with black pants, a rainbow cloak, and a feathered hat . We met on Friday evening when you were wearing a blue and white dress with a penguin hat and doll. There was something very interesting about your personality that went very well with your innocent beauty that I just couldn't quite get out of my head.

We saw each other again on Saturday, which was probably a terrible idea as I was extremely drunk (I hope from your point of view, not the most flattering state for someone to be in). I'm not sure if you thought I had some sort of sick intentions or was just making you feel uncomfortable, but I would've loved to have seen you again so I could apologize for my behavior. Not to mention I'm sure you could have come up with even more fun dares for me to do, since my two friends were very unimaginative in that department.

Cheers~

To the nice guys outside the Fairmont hotel around 1am Sunday night;

I was out sketching and having a cigarette, and you very thankfully cockblocked/saved me from a random dude who was hitting on me - it was Zachary cosplaying as a male Barnaby, and his friend with black/red hair also wearing a 'Neko' sweatshirt (he had on the turquoise one, I had one the purple) who drew a really nice sketch of me, for me, in my own sketchbook - You guys hung out with me for maybe 10-15 minutes at the most, but it was really nice - I kept an eye out but didn't see either of you (or maybe just didn't recognize you, lol) the next/last day of Con.

If anyone knows them, or if you happen to see this, I just wanted to thank you for chilling with me, and providing some good company & welcome distraction; I'd love to add you on Facebook and return the favor drawing a sketch for you guys, but if not I hope to see you next year!

Along the same lines: to the table playing 'Munchkin' Saturday night in the upstairs lobby; my friend Alex & I joined (or really he played, I made jokes), but it was a really fun time, so thanks!

- Natasha

To the people staying in room 446 at the Fairmont: I forgot to get all of your guys' contact info! (I think I had too much wine that evening >_<; ) But it was awesome getting to have an improv party (and I'm surprised we managed to figure out your guys' room from across the way!).

But this isn't only for them; this is for all the people late Sunday night at the Fairmont who were having dance parties in their windows! You guys were all awesome! Even for those that just waved a 'hello,' you were awesome too.

But yes, names - I remember Rachael, Evan, Courtney, Danielle, and ... Justin was it? Either way if any of you see this, message me! I hope we can keep in touch, and maybe see each other next Fanime!

(Oh and I was the one in the vkei/aristocrat - Kamijo - cosplay :D Cultural immersion, remember? xD).

To the Drunk!Tenth Doctor cosplayer roaming around on sunday night/early monday morning; You probably didn't even notice me sitting off to the side of the concourse (Hilton side) with my friends, but I just wanted to say you were awesome and made my night. If I hadn't been so sleep deprived, I would have gone over to say hello, really. I'd love to run with you. ; u;~

Other Professor Layton: You were fun, and I'm sorry I couldn't play chess. Let's both get Lukes next time!

Persona 4 You Panel Yosuke: You're Cute

Yuki from tsuritama: You're CUTE

the tall Natsuki and Yuki: I didn't see you persay, but I saw a picture my friend Haru took of you and you looked fabulous

Hello everyone,

I posted this before, but I added more to the story and felt justified in reposting.

I am looking for an asian? girl was wearing a Loltia/maid dress black/white? and a light colored shawl. On Sunday Night, around 9pm, she came up to me when I was walking through the park and ask where the black and white ball was located. I told her that she should follow me because I was going the same way. We had a small conversation about ballroom dancing, and I felt that I had chemistry with her. I was going to ask more about herself, but she was stopped by Black and White Ball Fanime staff saying that your dress was 2in too short and she was not allowed to come in. I wish I left the building with her and got to know her better, but my lack of sleep/foresight prevented me from seeing this opportunity. Five minutes later, I realized my mistake, but she was long gone and I never saw her again.

My biggest regret for Fanime 2012 was not talking to this girl and I have been kicking myself ever since Sunday. If you know a girl like this, could you show/tell her about this post. I was wearing black shoes, black slacks, and a button short sleeve black shirt. I am 6ft 3in tall and half Asian/half white.

I know that it is a slim chance that I might find her on the internet, but it the only route that is open to me. If this post does get to you, could you PM me?

Thank you

A couple of these shout outs I'd like to give!

To the gal in the beautiful blue and white dress at the Black and White Ball whom said she designed her own dress, I wanted to know more about it but didn't want to seem weird or distract you from your conversation any longer! If you see this I'd still like to ask you about it!

To the gal from ARC in Sacramento at the B&W Ball, thank you so much for the dances! Really topped off my night nicely to have a partner who knew what she was doing! :P

To the two gentlemen who were playing Para Para Saturday night- first off, you guys were completely awesome, but also thank you so much for your support and kindness! I truly love that game but was extremely embarrassed that I couldn't seem to pass a single round and almost gave up- thank you two for encouraging me to get back up and try it again. I finally caught my stride after a few more dollars, and you guys were seriously the  nicest people I've met at that machine.

To the Doctor Who cosplayer at the Black and White Ball, I hope I didn't weird you out by asking for a photo- I really wanted to dance with you but I don't know how to follow! I feel incredibly silly for not having seen Doctor Who but follow the fandom trifecta and appreciated your truly excellent cosplay- thanks for the photo!

To the Male Applejack cosplayer- I just saw a photo of you on a friend's picture of the MLP gathering and  I wish I could have found you to give your apple back! A friend of mine picked it up but didn't agree that we should go look for the lost and found because we were low on time so we moved it out of the way and propped it near where it fell. I would hope you found it! :(

Also! I met a Yuuka Kazami cosplayer at the Touhou gathering and Persona gatherings on Saturday, who I also saw last year while I was cosplaying as Wriggle. She and her friends (one of which was cosplaying a Shadow at the daytime Persona gathering) seem pretty chill and worth talking too, as we were at Hydration after the day gathering talking about various SMT games (not just Persona).

To her: If you see this, gimme a shoutout~ I could use more friends who are into the Shin Megami Tensei series as a whole :D

I have a few, all of which completely made my first time at Fanime [or any con] fantabulous.

To Sarah, the girl with the green hair and the sickmazing eyes from the dance[you cosplayed as Ramona, just not sunday] you are awesome! Hanging with you Sunday amazing! You are an awesome dancer, and I'd love to keep in contact with you, but I was lame and never once gave you any information D: Sorry our conversations got cut short, I couldn't find you or my friend after [my friends thought I was dead or disappeared and freaked out] I'd love to hear more about your adventures working to take down troubled children ten times your size. Hit me up and we could go to Evangaline's some time. :] [though, you, like me, weren't really into anime, so I'm hoping one of your friends you went with recognize you in this post. Short green hair, shaved in the back, septum piercing, love corsets and glitter mascara, live in a town I couldn't hear near antioch... ring a bell anyone?] and if not, then i'll at least see you next con.

The the Gamzee rover dancing and honking your horn in front of the dance all Sunday Night: Thanks for the dance battles! You did a fantastic job keeping an upbeat [haha] attitude for standing in front of a dance for 6+ hours, and also was the best Gamzee I saw all Fanime! Also good to know there are staff that know which trouble makers to keep an eye on. [and sorry for both sneaking up on you, and breaking your Casey in your hood the next day after not recognizing you... you looked shorter]

To the other two Travis Touchdowns out there: You two rock all the way to the Garden of Madness!

To everyone who recognized who I was [poorly] cosplayed as: Thanks for making my first con amazing! It wouldn't have been the same!

To anyone who played a boss from No More Heroes: Why did I not see you :[ I heard of two of you.
Hope to see more of you guys next year.

mod edit: its called a dance

First, let me say i was cosplaying as Excalibur, but i was the only one without pants. Hahaha

Now, my bro already posted this, but i'm looking for the other guy who went as Excalibur as well. You found me near the dealers hall, we had a short conversation and took pics together

Also, i met two girls who cosplayed as pikachu and pichu. They asked me to sing and dance the song and i just loved both of their reactions!

You three really should add me on Facebook

To the people who had pizza with me after the Naruto gathering and that played Apples-to-Apples for all of those hours: You guys are all awesome and I hope I see you guys again. D: (I was cosplaying as Itachi)

To the people that played Brawl with me when I was Lucario: Sorry I didn't put up that much of a fight, it has been awhile. ^^; I'll practice in some more with his move-set (and while wearing my mask) and destroy you guys next time. >:K BRING IT ON!!!

To the people that hung out with me while I was Lucario: You guys were pretty cool as well. :3

She's my best friend/daughter. :) I'll let her know she has a fan. She wants to remain anonymous (other than Harmonica Girl). She practices new anime/game songs every year to just play at Fanime and Sac-Animes.

I'm looking for a guy who cosplayed as final fantasy vii advent children (He was volunteering at fanime too). I danced with him at the black and white ball and I talked to him once. If you guys know who he is, please let me know (His name is Edward). I would like to talk to him again. ^_^

I'm also looking for the paramedic who was working at the first aid station at the Arcade hall (He's blonde and has blue eyes). My friends had to go home so I stayed with him and we talked about all sorts of things. Unfortunately, he had to go to an emergency and I forgot to ask for his name. If any of you guys know his name or who he is, please let me know~ (:

This is to the girl who asked me to dance on Sunday at the B&W ball. All I can really remember is that you are from the Bay Area and that you cosplayed as Tifa that weekend. I was the guy that was sitting there without my shoes because I lent it to my friend who did not have formal shoes. All I wanted to say was thanks. Even though I had no idea how to west coast swing you showed me how and it was exhilarating. You kind of turned my night from a lackluster experience into something memorable.

This is to the girl that was Darth Maul with the Yu-Gi-Oh! backpack. We hung out on Sunday outside the entrance of the con and talked a lot. I don't think it's right to say your name and where you're from here on an open forum so I'll keep that to myself. But I'm the Stormtrooper that talked to you for that good amount of time we hung out. Would definitely love to talk to you some more and hang out if you're cool with it. Shoot me a PM, would definitely love to hear from you again. By the way I still think the amount of time you spent to do that face paint was awesome! Looks fantastic!

I was actually the guy in the red umbrella security costly holding the camera on the ground. Which one were you?

I honestly wished I could've had conversations with more people at Fanime! People would ask for a picture, say thank you, and walk off, and not give me a chance to conversate with them. Do I look like one of those stuck up Asians?! I hope not! :/ I was too busy trying to not get entangled in my wig and trying to keep that Slutty Stitch from not causing too much trouble.

I feel totally uncomfortable taking pictures by myself. So next time, take a picture with me!

LOL, no you don't look like one of those stuck up asians, but most people were likely trying to avoid giving off that creeper vibe by staying around too long. If you are a male photographer, unless you know the cosplayer personally, if the cosplayer dosen't seem to want to talk or is busy, they tend to move on quickly rather then stand around and risk looking weird.

Take the initiative. Talk to them. But I think it's easier when you talk to other cosplayers. People that take pictures usually just come, take pic, and then move on to the next person.

Just quick off topic I see in your sig that you play water polo. Do you swim also?

I actually had the opposite problem, where I -didn't- want people to start a conversation, but most of them just wouldn't leave! I tend to attract creepers, though, especially when dressed as the Major (Ghost in the Shell, this was Friday night), and some as Ulala. Too bad. (I guess I look too badass in my other cosplays that no one wants to mess with me!)

I talked to you, though! Somewhat, at least!

You're the kind of person I'm afraid of talking to...

Though, I don't generally talk to many of the people I ask to take pictures of beyond a compliment on their cosplay. I also tend not to take that many pictures. Most of them are of dudes though because I'm paranoid of meeting women who think I'm hitting on them. I think my favorite person this year was Tutu-Master Chief. That guy was awesome.

Can we please leave my underwear out of this? I never said I wanted to meet women. You're still missing the point. You should probably check your grammar again before we talk about who's trying to sound smart. I was going to state that you really didn't understand anything, but I decided not to; you've made it quite necessary. Once again, don't associate yourself with me. I'm done here. how do you guys generally define "creeper"? I was balling up my courage to take a photo of various cosplayers and I may have think I have weirded them out in some way.
I know this may not seem helpful at first, but I generally define a creeper as someone whose actions actually or potentially (as in "if they knew about it," not as in "if someone somewhere could possibly be creeped out by this," since that woul make everyone a creeper with everything they do!) creep out or make uncomfortable (or scared, etc.) another party, typically a female party, though this isn't exclusive to men creeping out women (or young girls), since there are female creepers, and males can get creeped on by both females and other males.

Now for ways to tell if you are being creepy, and hopefully how to avoid them. Some things are clearly creepy, like taking upskirt photos of girls without them knowing (I think this falls pretty squarely into the "potential" category above!). Some things aren't, since it's all subjective. The basic rule of not being creepy is this: if the person you are interacting with seems uncomfortable in any way with the interaction, you are very likely being a creeper. Again, it's all subjective, and things that might not be creepy at all in another circumstance might seem creepy because this Princess Peach is -really- trying to go meet their friend and you just won't shut up about how much you love Mario RPG, yet if she wasn't distracted by trying to get somewhere, she might find the exact conversation to be enjoyable. When she finally meets her friends, she might say "I would have been here earlier, but wow, there was this creepy guy who just wouldn't shut up about Mario RPG!" simply because you couldn't read the signs that she was not comfortable with the conversation (in this case, for a specific reason that has nothing to do with your actions).

Some basic tips: Watch your eyes and tone of voice. People, especially women, and even more especially attractive women who get hit on a lot, notice the use of the Gaze. Your eye movements might make the person you are interacting with feel uncomfortably objectified or otherwise violated in some way. You'll have to keep that in mind. Of course, most women who wear sexy cosplays know what they are getting into and don't mind people to see what they are revealing; otherwise, they wouldn't wear it. Most people wouldn't mind just looking. However, when it crosses the line into gawking or oogling, which can be subjective but the basic concept is "don't stare, especially at her body, look at her face while talking to her," it becomes a problem. Also, tone of voice can be an issue, since a normal conversation with a different inflection can be taken as innocent or creepy, depending.

Watch what you say. This can be everything from blatently hitting on someone to simply acting odd (such as being too prying, too argumentative, etc.). This year, I had someone who talked to me a bit, left, came back, and started grilling me on things like why I prefer certain video games or why I live where I do in comparison to my major in college (I have no problem telling people basic info like the general area of CA where I reside or what I study in school, but that's about as personal as I get), and the more I tried to evade the questions, the more insistent he became. Don't be that guy. If someone seems to be evading your questions, doesn't seem to want to talk about something, you think you might be getting too personal, etc., if you keep interacting with that person in the same way, you are probably being a creeper. Also, if you just walk up to someone and start commenting on their looks or make obviously sexual comments, you might be creepin', depending on how they feel about it. In fact, you will most likely be creepin'. If you want to comment on something to start a conversation, start with talking about whatever series or character they are from, or if you don't know what it is, compliment how you like their costume and ask them what it is from or how the made it. Most people like to talk about things they like, and if you make the conversation less about them, their looks, etc., and more about their costume or the series they are from, they are much less likely to find you creepy. You most likely already have something in common, since you are at the same con together!

Don't touch people. Just don't. Don't grab at anything, even an arm or shoulder, don't hug without permission (and if the person doesn't give permission, don't act all pouty or insist on a hug or anything like that, just walk away), etc.

Treat people like people and act like a person. Cosplayers are people in costume, not characters, and not pretty things for your amusement. A lot of people seem to forget this. Also, don't act like an idiot yourself. I know that I find it refreshing when someone talks to me when I'm in costume like they would anyone off the street, rather than treating me like I'm the character or treating me like I'm an object. Actually, I'd say that treating a person like a person is probably my #1 tip on how to not be a creeper. If you keep that in mind, you're likely to be fine, given that you have any semblance of social skills or ability to read body langauge at all.

A small note that you may not realize (and I touched on earlier a bit) is that it may not be personal. The person you want to interact with could be distracted or in a hurry. If it is a female cosplayer, especially a particularly attractive one, she may be defensive because she's been hit on by every other heterosexual male in the convention and doesn't want to be hit on again. However, if someone seems uncomfortable with your interaction, politely excuse yourself from that interaction. Leave. Don't hang around and make them even more uncomfortable. That's what makes someone a creeper -- making others uncomfortable with your attentions towards them. You can be a creeper right off the bat, too, just don't make sexual advances right away, oogle people, take inappropriate photos, etc., and you should be fine there. You don't seem to be worried about being that kind of creeper, anyway.

When simply taking a photo and not interacting in another way, it's really easy to -not- be a creeper. Don't hang around awkwardly, either before or after. Don't ask for odd poses or take really low- or high-angle shots. Ask confidiently and smoothly, or, if the cosplayer is already posing for pics (especially if there is a crowd of photographers), simply hold up your camera and kind of point to it to let them know that you are joining the fray. If there is a big crowd of photogs, don't try talking to the cosplayer while they are posing and while there are still photogs around (as a cosplayer, I can tell you that they tend to come in waves, so you can easily wait for a small gap), and if you want to talk to them, stand off to the side and wait, don't just stand there and stare at them. Only take pics when the cosplayer is actually posing, don't just snap them off randomly. It's really basic, but it really helps. I can't speak for "most cosplayers," but I can say that I don't creeped out by a simple photo request unless the photog breaks one or more of these guidelines (typically more, unless it's something like hanging around for long periods before and after photos, not saying anything, or if someone were to attempt an upskirt shot or down cleavage shot or something).

When asking for photos -with- someone, please make it clear that you are asking for a photo -with- them and not -of- them. Also, ask before you touch the cosplayer. Always. Please. This is important. I don't tend to take pictures with fans except on rare occasion (say, they are a huge fan of whatever obscure JRPG I'm cosplaying, or they are 6 years old, or they are another cosplayer who might have something matching [I got matching large hammer shots with the Thor cosplayer, for example], etc.), but I started to this year because so many people were asking for a pic of me and then jumping into the shot themselves. This is even worse when they then proceed to put their arms around with without permission, since I really don't like to be touched (and some of my costumes are fragile). Again, if the cosplayer seems uncomfortable, say, they are trying to squirm away from your grip, watch for that and apologize.

Basically, if you aren't socially inept, aren't making unwanted sexual advances (a lot of "creepiness" tends to have sexual overtones), and are treating people like people, you should be fine. This post may seem a bit long, but really, it's not nearly as hard as it seems.

And really, if some random person thinks you are a creeper for a single, innocent interaction, then that's more their problem than yours. You can't help that. But if someone thinks you are being a creeper, take a look at what you are doing and try to see how it could be interpreted as such, and work on changing on that. A lot of people don't seem to realize when they are being a creeper, so if someone thinks you are, don't just dismiss it, see if you were doing something (say, you didn't realize you were staring at her breasts, or you said something that could come across as inappropriate, etc.) that would make the person think that.

I hope that helps!

To the girl that came up to me and told me they really liked my costume, I apologize for not conversing.  I was very drunk, had just started a prescription to Adderall, and at a complete loss for words.  I now feel like a big jerk.

This is to young lady I danced with at the B&W ball on Sunday night. You wore a long green wig along with a long green dress. We actually did exchange names and had a very nice conversation. I was flattered that you asked if I was at least 18 years old and you wondered if I was a sparkling vampire, thank you.

You mentioned that you cosplayed as Yoko from Gurren Lagann at Fanime and that you are from the Central Valley, Tulare to be exact. It was unfortunate that we couldn't continue the conversation. If you see this send me a pm.

Btw, I was the tall guy with glasses if that helps.

To the Stocking i met at the dealers hall on saturday, you were with your brother, buying dvds. Loved your outfit, asked to take your pic. you were extremely patient and extremely detailed in telling me about the character, series, and how you made the outfit. I wanted to ask for your info but i had just met you and you were with your brother. Didnt seem right. Well, if you read this, pm to inbox, would definitely like to talk.

I just remembered... there was someone dressed up as sexy Thelma from Scooby-doo, and I really regret not get a pic, let alone talk to her. :(

Oh, I feel like a creeper now :c During my first two years at Fanime, I asked for permission to put my arm around cosplayers before taking a picture. There would always be an awkward pause before they said "Of course!" However, for this year, whenever I asked to take a picture with cosplayers, I automatically put my arm/hand around their shoulder. It's not like a threw my entire arm around them, but rather place my hand on their shoulder lightly so I wouldn't look so awkward in the picture. Most of the cosplayers did the same or posed. I stopped asking since I thought it sounded so awkward/creeper-ish... I feel bad now ;n;

On a similar note, there were these two cosplayers dressed as the twins from Ouran High School Host Club that kind of invaded my personal space (as seen in my icon). Personally, I didn't feel too uncomfortable with it, just surprised. After they agreed to take a picture with me, my friend with the camera moved so I was momentarily confused. They spun me in the right direction then posed by kissing me on the face. I guess my bewilderment showed on my face since they patted me on the back before I left. That was actually the second time I experienced a similar situation from people cosplaying as the twins. I guess they were just in character owo

I'm also sorry if this is getting off-topic >>

Oh, I don't think that qualifies at all! Putting your hand lightly on someone's shoulder to balance a photo isn't the same as, say, grabbing someone by the waist without warning for a photo. I doubt that most people have problems with people doing the former (I know I don't, though a little heads-up would be nice), I'm talking more about the latter. Even putting your arm actually around someone's shoulders can be a bit much. Maybe not quite creeper-status, but it certainly weirds me out when a stranger thinks that they can put their hands all over me just because I'm in a costume. (It hasn't happened to me, thankfully, but I've also heard stories of people using photos and free hugs and the like as an excuse to feel up a cosplayer -- obviously, that's not cool at all)

Some people are also a little too quick to use the "creeper" label, I think. ;P It's usually a combination of things, rather than one single thing, unless it's one single particualrly bad thing (feeling up cosplayers, taking upskirt shots, etc.). Some people are too paranoid either way (too paranid of "creepers," or too paranoid of being labeled as one)

We are going a bit off-topic, aren't we?

To bring it back, I'm still wondering if anyone knows who the Raynie (Radiant Historia) cosplayer was. I've only found that one picture of her on ACP, and the cosplayer herself isn't tagged. Maybe I'll have better luck over at cosplay.com. I love that game (and cosplay from it myself... I'm the Eruca on the RH tag on ACP! [short blonde wig, armor, gun, princessy look]), and would love to find another cosplayer from it, especially now that I know there is one on the west coast!

1.  Any & all Hei (Darker than Black) cosplayers who mysteriously avoided me, I don't know if you were just really in character or terrified/disgusted of me for various reasons--I will try again next year, I just wanted a picture!!!

2.  Male Sebastian (Black Butler) cosplayer who was staying at Hyatt Place, you were perfection.  Have a blessed day.

3.  Yuki, Yuki, & Natsuki (Tsuritama) cosplayers; you were essentially the highlight of Fanime for me.  Thank you for the sheer awesome that you all were.  Enoshima Don! <3

4.  Official Fanime Photographer for Hetalia Gathering - You were wearing a coral shirt.  Thank you for being in the middle of ALL my pictures.  -__-

I know I certainly would be. My post was mostly a joke though because I'm terribly shy and always choose cosplay a with like a helmet or mask so I don't have to talk much. Ex: I was the mini female pedo bear last year
