I think the only real problem I had was with the Artist Alley staff being complete and utter assholes about everything. And I'm not just trying to spill the common 'they wouldn't let me do what I want, they're meany heads!' line you normally see, they were just being outright rude in every situation.

We had short repeat of last years musical exits in the Games Room again on Saturday morning, but that was worked out.

Had a minor problem with the Marriot and ended up staying a night at the Saint Claire. Really nice hotel, I'm thinking they will be getting my future business.

EDIT: And before I forget, I was a little sad to see a lack of Melty Blood in the Games Room. :/

By around noon, the crowds will have started to disperse, but you'll still see a lot of people milling about until around 2. Hell, I was in the area until 8pm last year and saw a few cosplayers by the fountain yet.

Damn, I was thinking my bag was just missing it. Those pocket style guides were super awesome last year.

Agreed. I understand this saves time money and trees, but meh, I miss the printed schedule. Last year's minis were sooo handy.

The whole 'save time, money and trees' bit gets a tad subverted when you look at the useless full color 'here are the events without the time or location listed' guide that we got instead. How does I priority.  :-\
Cost more trees without.

Pardon?

Gaming / Re: Best Wii Games?
July 06, 2010, 04:00:58 PM
No More Heroes is a must for any Wii owner.
Toss in the Metroid Prime Collection.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers is a fun, short-but-sweet kind of game.

As far as WiiWare:

World of Goo, Cave Story, Final Fantasy 4: The After Years, Pokemon Rumble, Mega Man 9 & 10, all three Phoenix Wright games, all five Strong Bad games.

Anything currently on the Virtual Console is a winner, but there are many games you can get in cheaper formats elsewhere. For example, don't bother paying however much it is for MM2 or 3. Just drop $20 on the Mega Man Anniversary Collection.

General Convention Discussion / Re: Con Sickness
July 05, 2010, 12:55:51 PM
I made a topic last year about the water being the cause of some of the sicknesses. A friend kept getting a swelled throat every time she got any of the water in or around her mouth. This year, a different friend was bed ridden for a day after consuming water from the tap.

How could I forget about the Pokewalkers.

When I had initially gotten my copy of SoulSilver, I thought that Pokewalker was the stupidest thing Pokemon had done on a long line of stupid things. But, I figured I'd fire it up for Fanime. So glade I did, I met a lot of really nice people. I ended up throwing in a Magnamite, which I had nicknamed FanimeCon. Turns out a lot of people thought that was really funny.

A little bit ago, I read something about the Pokewalker I didn't know. Apparently, when you put a Pokemon in it, it takes note of your current team. When you use it on someone, a copy of that someones team is added to the training school in Veridian City. I got to battle the last 10 people I had connected with and I remembered many of the names.

Fanime memories are fun memories.

Depending on what you're playing for, it can be really easy or really hard to find a server you can be happy with. I like leveling for the sake of exploring the game and enjoying the atmosphere whenever I like, wherever I like. To that end, the first private server I was on was great, as they had free instant warps to just about every damn place in the game.

Just happened to think of this. This is less of a complaint and more of a suggestion.

The weapon shows in the dojo panels. A large chunk of time at the start of each panel was devoted to filling out liability wavers. As a way of getting the action quicker, so to speak, maybe the wavers could be put online or provided in the goody bags so people can fill them out ahead of time and streamline the process.

ye. no need for those kinds of comments -__-

You think you could PM me that image you posted in the other topic? It was deleted before I could save it and I thought it was really cute.

^_^

EDIT: On topic, still looking to run into Savanna again, if you read this. Name is Chris, you chit chatted with me and Cindy on the first night of the Swap Meet, in line.

The last time I actively used iRO, Sakray was the place to be for casuals. The main servers were crowded as all hell, but Sakray normally only had a userbase of around 500 people who were on at scattered times. It was much easier to make friends and chit chat, or at least I found it to be.

I've read that people from those days are saying Valkyrie is similar to what Sakray used to be.

Anyone tried the DS game that was released a month or few ago?

I bought less this year than I have at any other Fanime. Only three things, all from the Swap Meet (not counting some buttons for a friend, which she picked out, which also came from the Swap Meet).

-HG/SS Ho-oh figure
-HG/SS Lugia figure
-Final Fantasy 12

Me and a friend did leave with a few boxes of free books that someone didn't want to carry back up to their room and just gave away.

Ended up selling various peoples items at the Swap Meet, including my own. It was honestly the most fun I'd had the entire weekend (my friends and I joked about how I had the more fun working than not working). Met many a strange person that night (which is awesome), from a guy who had a religious tattoo with the Star Trek symbol in the center on this chest, to a few people I'd met a few times from my universities anime club, to a few creepy old guys who were clearly leering at women (which I reported...that's a bit...much..).

Got to spend and afternoon wondering around San Jose with a few friends I only get to see twice a year. Cherished time is happy time. One friend was so tired when I ran into him, he mistook the cigar I handed him for chocolate and tried to eat it. Hilarity ensued (I'm eternally glad I didn't lite the thing first 0_0).

And I was introduced to Guyver and Casshan, both of which I'm greatly enjoying.

Maybe I'm just paranoid or missing something, but this does rub off as a bit creepy and to some extent stalkerish for me. :/

It's not just you. I've been debating saying more or less the same thing - Posting once or twice to say you'd like to meet up with someone is fine, but getting to the "soul mate" point kind of crosses a line. If I were that guy, I'd be specifically avoiding responding at this point. >_<

If you were a guy (particularly one who frequents anime conventions), this is a situation where you'd more than likely be thinking with various parts of your anatomy first. :)

spin the bottle is a private game....and exhibit hall 3 is not private.....save it for places you live and people that you know...

Or areas that you personally have paid for, such as a hotel room.

Rovers: Personally, I'd rather the rovers be effectual than considerate. I've seen a lot of complaints about rude staff members, but I don't think people realize how frustrating it can be working an event like FanimeCon. I have respect for anyone who's willing to give up precious con time to be staff. If you can be authoritative without being rude, great, but if people are listening to you, don't be afraid to raise your voice a little, and give specific instructions.

That's all well and good (and I agree with you), Fanime has a history of rovers/staff that were outright powertripping and that causes more problems than it solved. I've seen people directly defying overly rude staff just to example how little power they actually have in the grand scheme of things (with respect to staff, this is a direct quote from various individuals over the years, not a challenge on my part).

This year, the rovers were stern yet polite, which made them more effective than I'd ever seen them before (I noticed that the one person I was complaining about last year was keeping her mouth shut this year).

I approve of this.

Wondering if anyone else has any ideas or suggestions based off this year's con to improve next year's con

From what I've read:

3. More polite rovers.

do you have any specific examples?

Well, he said 'from what I've read', so I'd assume the specific examples would be right here in the topic.

I liked when the rovers did a spin.

So do you mean on duty Rovers with Headsets and arm bands and the like joined in? Or off duty rovers with staff badges?

Pure curiosity.
I had a couple on-duty Rovers radio in and ask if they had to break it up. I believe about then is when we got a call from Con-Ops asking us to break it up. (I'm not sure about this, there were a lot of situations which got this response). The Rovers were told to break it up (politely).

They may have participated before the order to break it up came in. It's not like we foresaw a game of spin-the-bottle and knew it would be an issue to train on in advance.

This IS Fanime. Shit literally happens at the drop of a hat.

The water complaint over all wasn't that big for me.  It was mostly just something I made a mental note about.  The game room issues I think are the bigger problem.  I remember a friend brought in his own ps3 and his own soul caliber and controllers to use on one of the TV's because the game wasn't provided.  Also, there were a few complaints from my friend and overheard from others about how the game library was only cobbled together and was never finished.  Though I don't know how true that is about sunday, since I heard that on saturday night.

Who said we didn't have Soul Calibur IV?

I would assume that if someone had to go grab a PS3 for the express purpose of playing SC4, a lot of someones said you didn't have it.
