T.T
This is getting more complicated by the day.
What I know for sure is this.
I have already contacted the Fanime staff about the game, and I've had it approved. Fanime Con itself could not officially hold it, but we were given the "a-okay." So that is all settled.
But the sign-thing is turning out to be a pain.
Although the panel advice is a great idea. Thank you.

Neighbor lets try this, you tell me exactly what the sign is going to say and I'll let you know if there is going to be any issues.

We got the official rate for the City Parking Lot, under the SJCCF, has increased from last years rate of $10.00 per day to $12.00 per day and still no in/out privileges.

Just thought you would like to know...

The Crowne Plaza is listed as being $99 a night for a two-bedded room.

Which means that the total cost for 2 days/1 night is $99.00 plus City Taxes and Hotel Tax would be $117.14.

Quote from: PassingTheBuck on March 21, 2008, 08:04:13 PMDoes that answer your question
Thanks for explaining your background.  45 years of convention experience is most impressive.
(Especially considering that the person who started the "How old is too old?" thread was worried about being "too old" at 24 years of age....) ;)

That answers part of my question, but I was also trying to ask more generally for a list of authoritative people on the forums.  I think it might help people judge the level of authority of various posters if there could be a sticky thread in which the official staff people could write similar introductions indicating what they do, how high up the chain they are (since those lower down on the chain have more people who can change the policies from under them, making what they say no longer true), and how much experience they have (which I tend to use as an indication of how likely it is that they'll run into unforeseen circumstances that force them to recant what they've said).  It might clear up the confusion of who can say what.

It bothers me that people can randomly say that there's a ban on "all signs" or "anything that is a proposition" and have people believe them.  Obviously, FanimeCon itself has to put up signs to point people in the right direction, and the dealers and art booths should be able to have signs advertising their products.  At a minimum, there should be a clause allowing Fanime's own signs.  And, just because banning signs might be in vogue with other anime conventions doesn't mean that the policy is a good idea, that it actually works, or that it will stand up to legal scrutiny if necessary.  "Propositions" do not have solid enough legal definitions that anybody can ban "anything" that is one of them (and I believe that our country is still "dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal").  People can ban "prostitution", "sexual harassment", "advertising without a valid and verified California sales permit", "physical assault", "panhandling", "solicitation", etc., but a "proposition" would need to be more specifically defined, and proper policies should probably avoid using that particular word completely.

WOW, that's a lot to think about, but to be honest, if the SIG has Chairman, Vice-Chair, Division or Head, they have the Authority to comment on the their field of specific knowledge or cross knowledge.  That's about the best, for the time being, that we could offer to you.  If the SIG is something other than one of those titles, you would have to use your judgement.

Quote from: Nyxyin on March 21, 2008, 06:15:04 PMIs there a list of the Official Authoritative People on the forums and what they're authoritative about?  Obviously, the stars and "Moderator" status means people are authoritative, but PassingTheBuck must be pretty important too (or so I gather from his posts about hotel numbers), but he only has two stars and a status of "Inu-Posta".

That's a loaded question, how important am I?   :P  One's ego could get inflated by ones attempting to describe how important they are to cause one not to be able to use a doorway, because one's head is over inflated.   ::)

As the SIG states, I'm the Treasury of FanimeCon as well as the Comptroller (and the Chief Finacial Officer) for ARG, the parent company that owns FanimeCon.  I am also part of the executive staff for FanimeCon for the past five years.  You might say I have some knowledge of how Fanime works and do speak with a certain amount of authority when it comes to specific subject matters, such as Finance and Hotels, while I also have a passing knowledge of Facilities, Rovers/Safety/Security, ConOps, Tech, Publications, Programming and maybe one or two other subjects.

If I comment on something it's from almost 45 years of experiences in Science Ficition, Horror, Fantasy and Anime conventions and not from one or two local events, but literally hundreds of events that I've either attended or have works as a staffer.  While I do speak for FanimeCon, I try to announce when it's my opinion and when it's coming out of my mouth as Staff.  However, I don't often comment on a vareity of subjects, just because there are literally dozens of other people who have the knowledge and the authority to comment on it.  Therefore I don't have a lot of posts and in fact last year I was a moderator and just didn't have the time nor the talent to properly devote to it and I was reduced in rank this year.  MILTON - Did you have something to do with that?!?

Does that answer your question without it making me sounds like a doofus or an self absorbed a**hole?  No one else can answer that question for her, especially you LadyKaren...

i always thought that the technical meaning of prostitution is doing anything involving your body for something else like will glomp for pocky or will yaoi for money stating that you want a date its just kinda...
i want to say funny but at the same time no....
in the definition that i heard it does not count as prostitution

Prosititution is the exchange of a montary nature (money, merchandise, bonds, stocks, etc) for a sexual act or acts.  That's the simplest term to apply to the word.  The long version takes up books and penal codes.  Therefore a date in which one party pays for dinner, a show/movie, buys jewel and the rest of the night the second party has sex with the first party could consistute Prosititution.  Basically your standard date.

No nothing on Glomping, Hugs or anything really like that. And I don't want any flaming! That's right I'm talking to you!

Anywho, is it okay that a have a temp-sign for the B&W ball that says "Laughing Man in need of Date" I will be by the windows and once I hopefully have a date, i will throw away the sign.

Is it okay?

Mister_E,

I don't think the sign fits into any illegal activities, you are not offer money for sexual favors, in fact you are seeking a date for the evening, it would be the say as if you scream out that you are looking for a date for the evening, instead you have written it out, hence I find nothing wrong with it.

I'm going to be staying at the Fairmont, but I had a question and I was hoping you could answer it.

I originally booked a 4 night stay at the Fairmont, for two people thinking that I was going to be going with my friend. However, she won't be able to go, but I am going to possibly end up with 3 other people. Now, will that present a problem at the hotel when I go to check in and say that there will be four people, including myself? Part of me thinks that it shouldn't, seeing that the room has two beds, so two people to a bed, right. But I'm paranoid about these things. I don't want to drive 6 hours to Fanime and then have trouble with the hotel.

I can't comment on this subject as there are legal issues

However theorically, if this was a word problem, I would answer it in the following manner:

"Do not tell them how many people are in the room, just asked for <fill in the blank> number of keys and be done with it.  They aren't going to be asking for the names of the other people, they think there are four bodies and you are paying for four slots, they aren't going to know any differences."

But speaking from a legal stand point I would have to say that you need to be up front with them and be honest about the number of bodies.

What year do you think Fanime will go to? I'm just wondering, I'm thinking of going in the future.

Interesting question.

The only history that anime has to compare itself against would be comic and SF conventions and each of these has had a trend of growing and dying for different reasons and while each is no longer in its glory days, they still do exist in one form or another.  Some have expanded to become monsters, like ComicCon, while others disappear off the face of the Earth, TimeCon.

As for FanimeCon, well, we are booked the SJCCF in downtown San Jose until 2017.

As long as FanimeCon continues to expand its appeal to the general audience, than we will continue to remain in one shape or another, but I highly doubt that any of us will recognize it in 2020.

Out of curiosity, is the Ramada SJ also selling out? It's the one off of 2nd st, near the CC. I haven't heard any news or stories about it.
Ramada Limited San Jose Convention Center

It's not part of our block, we are hoping next year getting them to join us, so I really don't have any word on it.

Hotel and Facilities / Hotel Montgomery is Open...
March 12, 2008, 10:16:51 AM
That's right, the Hotel Montgomery is open for booking, we got a contract with them last night and it's up on the web site.

They are located next to the Fairmont, but closer to the convention center.

They have a very limited number of rooms, it's an older hotel, but the staff is very helpful and is looking forward to service the FanimeCon members.

Just thought you would like to know...

Hey Craige,

Don't know if you know, but does this selling out of rooms seem to indicate that more people are coming to Fanime this year or that more people have decided to get rooms? I'm not sure what the pre-reg numbers are like, but it sure seems like a ton more people are going to be around!

Hi, Registration numbers are up by about 25%. There are a number of other factors, including those who were in college during the first couple of years that Fanime moved to San Jose and they couldn't attend all four days, but maybe one or two days and now that they are working, thus have the money and time to attend Fanime full time.  There is the factor dealing with increased attendees registration and how it affects the number of rooms that is needed.  Yes, the factor of the 24 hours of Programming affects of attendees who realize that they need some place to crash and sleep and don't want to drive home.  There are other factors that affect the growing room usage count.

if my memory serves me correctly,
I believe single day passes are as follows:
*** disclaimer *** I could be wrong hopefully someone from Reg staff will correct me. ^_^

Friday only - $25*
Sat only - $30*
Sunday only - $30*
Monday only - $25*

Weekend (Sat & Sunday) - $55*

FULL Weekend (technically the whole Con?) - $ 65* @ registration line
(which WILL BE LONG...)

That's why its awesome to pre-reg online or Super Early birdy registration for @ Con for 2009!

Woot! for getting ready for Fanime 2009.
arent you ready?

Close, really, really close...

Friday - $25.00
Saturday - $35.00
Sunday - $35.00
Monday - $20.00

Full Weekend - $55.00

Dealer Hall Pass - Monday afternoon (after 12:00pm) $5.00

Now is that for this year (2008) or last year (2007)? Because I thought we didn't finalize it yet...

Those were last years price, but I highly doubt they will be going down this year, if anything they will either stay at the same level or go up and I highly doubt they will be going up.

A Dealer hall pass ?

That's new.

Sounds like grade school... may I have a (shopping) hall pass please?

Coolz. ^_^

That is a great idea. Helps the vendors to get rid of some extra stock while allowing people who have been noticing brightly-dressed teenagers all weekend long to see what the heck is going on.

Nice.

Actually we have done this for the last couple of years and the dealers think it's a great idea too.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section...
I think from previous years... If my memory serves me we use have music  on the ConCourse (the main walkway areas of the Con) to play a sorta background or ambiance for the setting of Fanime.

Previous years they had random anime/J rock tracks and other times I think just general generic music.

Some years it was too loud, and other years the music was accidentally embedded into the minds of the Artist in their Alley.

So Rant aside, is there a way to vote for said background music? or are we getting rid of it all together?

Discuss.

This would fall under Programming, I'm not sure if this comes under Facilities or Live Programming, but one of them has the IPod that is used for the background music.  I'm not sure how the selection process has worked in the past, normally one or two people select the music that we listen to.

If you have vote for specific selection of music, I would continue with this thread and post it.

Hi Everyone,

The Fairmont Hotel has decided to open a VERY large block of single bedded rooms.

This is a four star hotel.

If you have not registered as of yet, this is the last hotel with any rooms to offer up to us.

After this block is sold out, the next hotel will be down the VTA line.

I have not idea how long this is going to last, but consider this your final warning about getting a close by hotel room.

This thread makes me feel like a child. >.<

Yeah, when you figure that I'm twice the age of anyone mentioned, maybe it's time to go find a SF con and dress up like a Sandman or maybe a 'red-shirt'.  Where's my electric scooter?!?
