Can you tell me what program you're going to be removing vocals with?  I'm curious because if I know then I can get it as close as possible to how it will sound in the competition so I won't be surprised.

Gale, may I clarify what Jupe means?  I know her and we were discussing this problem.  The issue here is that she has to start singing a bit before the music starts.  Is it ok if she adds 2 seconds of silence at the beginning of the track so it's easier for her?  She is aware that if she is singing a song where the vocals either start before the music starts or right when the music starts that she won't be penalized for small mistakes, but as a performer she'd prefer to avoid that at all costs.

Also: Is there any chance that I could bring my own vocal removed version of a song so that if it doesn't work out right for you guys, I still can?  I can send you the mp3 in advance to show you that it is perfectly legitimate?  I just want it so that you can hear the harmonies of the original singer in the background.  I know you could do it for me, but I'm not sure how it's going to turn out if you do.  I know I'm asking a lot, but I don't really understand why I can't just remove the vocals for myself ahead of time...  Thanks for your time and sorry if I'm being a pain.

This will be my second competition.  If anyone knows about gendou.com, they had a gendou idol and I was in the finals (they haven't given out final results yet, but meh).  This will be different, though, because I have to sing live and get the audience's attention.

I want to do the Karaoke gong show, too.  I'm pretty good at purposely butchering Ali Project songs.  :b

It is SO on.  I was in choir for 6 years and my mom has a degree in music with a focus on voice, so when I'm doing something wrong she tells me, and I've been coached on occasion for auditions, though I've never had formal voice lessons.  Someday I'll get those.  My friend L. Jupe was in choir in high school.  We aren't singing together, but we will be rooting for each other the whole time.  :3 

Konata, how old are you?  I'll be 21 tomorrow. 

In fact, how old are you people competing or trying to sign up at con to compete?  I'm curious about the range of ages that will be in the competition.

Thanks for your posts. We did put up the link a bit early on Twitter, at around 9:42PM.

Based on last year's turnout, I expected 4 or 5 people to sign up by 10PM. However, by 10PM, 21 people had already signed up.

We did not expect such a tremendous turnout- both the quick turnout and the responses over sign-ups filling up speak strongly for the increased interest in Fanime Con's Karaoke Contest. Next year, we will definitely be expanding the number of spots for online signups. Also, in the future we will open sign-ups exactly at 10PM.

As we get closer to the con, we will post more information on at-con signups.

While as far as I know, I made it into the contest, I am so grateful for the enormous effort you are already making to fix next year's workings before this year's con has even begun. 

That's my hope too, but I don't think it's fair that they said 10:00 but it's been open for the past 25ish minutes, meaning people were singing up before 10:00!   And they only have 10 spots to sign up for at the con!!  What am I supposed to do now, not even been given a chance?

While I know what the rules say, I have to agree with this statement.  The thread did say around 10PM.  In the minds of most (or at least in my opinion) that's usually a gap of 15 mins before or 15 mins after 10pm.  An hour before is kinda deceiving.  On top of that, there was supposed to be something on twitter.  I was texting on my phone while at work (bad me!) and I never got anything from Twitter.  I was working till 9:30pm and didn't get back home till 9:45pm. 

I dunno.  I'll place my hopes with At-con sign-ups, but I highly doubt i'll make it considering I won't get into San Jose till about 1pm on Friday.  Best of luck to the contestants.  ^-^

It didn't go up an hour before.  I was reading the threads and watching like a hawk, and it didn't go up on twitter until 9:45pm, which falls in your range.  I do understand all of your frustration, though.  I'm not saying it's all dandy, but I just wanted to point out that it the sign ups did not go up at 9pm, but actually they didn't go up until a lot later.  I was refreshing the page constantly.

Alright, so if I wanted to sing the tv size of Lilium for prelims, I'd bring you the tv size version of Lilium and you'd dampen the vocals for me?

Enkai: I use Adobe Audition to do it, but I'm really picky about sound quality.  The problem is that most tv size versions of songs, especially older ones, are poor quality in the first place, so vocal cutting them only makes it worse.

And I am a very strong singer, so I don't have to worry about not singing loud enough as long as the music isn't deafeningly loud, which I don't think will be a problem. 

Either way, assuming I sign up in time, I can't wait to hear everyone's singing voices.  :3

I'm sorry for one last question, bit of we want to do the tv size version and have made one using the original karaoke (i.e. parts were cut out to make it tv length) is that ok to use?  Or do we have to suffer through using vocal removal?  I can post a clip so you know what I'm talking about.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am just bustling with excitement and can't wait to sign up for this contest.  It says on another page that May 2nd is when registration starts, but May 3rd is what another post said.  Can you verify what the correct date is for me?

Also, about how quickly do the spots fill up?  I'm concerned that for some reason I won't be able to get to the computer.

And one last question.  If a song originally has harmonies, but the karaoke version does not, is it okay if I record them in advance and mix them into the track I give to you guys?  Certain songs just don't sound as full if you don't add in the harmonies.
