I got the $.50 price from these guys: http://ens.efersmui.com/

I buy from them at every convention I go to that they show up at. :)

But I do understand that the process can be expensive. I'll try to keep that in mind when I peruse Artist Alley in a couple of weeks. :D
oh, I've bought from them before xD!
They seem to be quite successful and perhaps their designs are a bit simpler than other people's stuff so they can charge lower.
Also, they have a lot of text buttons, which take way less time than character buttons, probably. The ones that they sell for .50 are mostly text buttons... they charge more for animals. I think $2 isn't unreasonable for a complex, character button which takes much more time than slapping some black text on a white button. Hahaha.

Other artists who sell buttons, do you agree? Since I've never sold buttons before, idk exactly what a good price is. Is $1.50 to $2 is reasonable for a character button?

kookie: I am also an avid button collector, but I disagree with your prices. $.50 is ridiculous for a button, I've rarely seen anyone sell them for that price. That's barely enough to cover the button part expenses, and the cost of buying a button machine. Add that to the price of a table, and someone who only sells buttons would have to sell hundreds, or even thousands, of buttons to break even. If the artist orders buttons online if they don't have a button machine, some places charge near $.50 for buttons if they don't order huge amounts. 8I

I'll be selling buttons this year, and I'm thinking of pricing them at $1.50 to $2.00, but giving deals if they buy more. eg 4 buttons for 5 dollars or something like that.

This is my first con selling too. I found a lot of whats been said so far very helpful. :0!!!

Dealers Room / Re: Money spent on items
April 28, 2011, 07:12:19 PM
I've never spent over like, $30 in the dealers room LOL. Each year usually I just buy a couple of posters or a plushie or something, since I don't collect figures or anime/manga. ^___^;;

HOWEVER, I spend like double or triple that amount in the artist's alley. ;u; I guess prints/buttons/the art aspect of fanime appeals to me more. xD

In total, including badge cost, I never exceed spending $200 in each of the three years I've gone to fanime.

This year I'm gonna bring lotsa money to the swap meet. Hopefully I'll find stuff that I like that *u*!! Cuz last year only went friday (and late, cuz of the FLOW concert), and only got to spend a little bit of time in there. ;n; !!!

i've never been to day zero before. i'll probably try to go this year, but i have school and work thursday until 8. probably won't have time to pick up my badge though idk when the badge pickup hours are on day zero, but probably enough time to go to the swap meet *u*

how will the tables be assigned? :0

mist ;____;
maybe you will find someone willing to share a table with you, or some people don't pay on time and you make it in. keep checking your aa account until fanime arrives. TT.TT

don't quit staffy ;____;''

topagae i don't know what you are talking about. many of us did follow the rules without "influence and power" and got what we wanted way ahead of you, without making posts which a) stirred up a lot of unnecessary drama and b) upset a lot of people.

fat essay
heeee! i am an accounting major.
will be looking forward to accounting, sounds absolutely fantastic!

actually i get a minor headache just thinking about it. weeps

nothing will go exactly the way you want, chobits. >^>;;;
i don't think you have to join staff to know how it feels, you just have to be more understanding of their position. it's probably wayyy not easy to be staff. especially since they're not paid? and they have a lot to deal with eg. technical issues & complainers. i wouldn't be able to do it. LOL.

When the site was down, my friend sent me and another friend the link. After that, I sent the link to another friend. My friend, who signed up first, didn't get a preliminary table. I didn't get one either. But her friend, who she sent the link to got a table right away. And so did the friend that I sent the link to, who signed up the day after the AA page was first up. Based on that, I don't think it was first come first served.
oh! aren't you ryan's little sister :3

hnnnnngg well maybe the friend submitted the form faster? and the other friend... idk. i'm so confused :'(
good luck getting a table! maybe you can find someone to share with?

chobits: listen kid does set a bad tone. who are you even talking to. 8I
i'm sure if i was in your position i would be upset too, but don't put the blame on others just because you didn't get what you want. everyone was pretty much in the same situation, checking their emails constantly throughout the day. email AA staff and ask them what's going on with the lottery results, don't complain in such a condescending tone. maybe email them with some suggestions too, about exactly what you think should be changed. and next time don't spend hundreds of dollars on supplies when you aren't even sure you will get a table, knowing that there are much more artists than tables available. :'( i'm cheap and i refused to buy the prints/button supplies/keychain supplies/table displays before knowing for sure i would have a table. if you don't get a table just save them for the next convention you go to! but who knows maybe you got in the lottery. good luck.

I just looked at the email the staff sent out before AA opened and the AA FAQ and you're right Haruka, I didn't see anything saying that it would be first come first serve. But I feel like I read it somewhere... or maybe I just assumed that it would be FCFS. (This is my first AA too) I mean, I think usually AA tables are first come first serve, at most conventions. If it weren't, then how do the staff pick? Just by best art? Lottery for everyone? Both of those sound extremely unreasonable and unfair.

But I agree to some extent that perhaps they should have made some aspects of the AA clearer. During registration, I was pretty much spamming the facebook group chat with questions and freaking out. Haha xD;;

Also I think the two week registration was for just in case people drop out/people aren't approved. If they closed it right after the exact number was filled, then less people would have a chance. I heard that a lot of people end up not showing up for their tables at the con/other things come up so they can't go.

i know some people are pairing up for the lottery, so the chances are higher.
good luck <3

I have a question about the AA Agreement papers I am now going over. It seems there are some things for us to fill out, are we suppose to hand this in to the staff when we come to get out tables?  Also does each artist need to fill it out?  At the bottom it talks about payment however I have already had to pay before the Agreement paper step, in other words Tables x ___ (Full $60) and Table x ___ (half $30).  do I need to fill this out again as well?
once you get approved, one of the steps of the registration is to agree to the AA agreement papers (step 6). basically you just read through it and say that you accept. so i don't think you need to print it out and hand it to the staff, since it's already in their records. each artist needs to agree to it though. like step 6 lists all the artists, and each one has to "sign" that they agree.

so yeah. i don't think we need to fill out those papers, if you've already accepted online. however, if you haven't been approved and you are going to try to get a table the day of the con, maybe you should print out the papers and bring them in?

but i'm not staff so i'm not 100% sure of this. try emailing [email protected]
:3

also coughdrops you friend seems pretty fishy.. maybe he/she has some "connections" to people on staff? i have no idea. D: but yeah that seems pretty unfair if it was true that your friend registered a week after. that whole week i was worrying my ass off constantly checking my status lolololol :C

This email just went out to the AA mailing list. Hopefully this will help clear some stuff up, guys.

Oh simple question! How do you sign up for the AA mailing list? :O Or is it only for those who got the table or something?
anyone can be on the AA mailing list, i think!

it's on the AA FAQ thread (you should read it! it has a lot of useful info ^_^)

Q: Is there a mailing list for the artist alley?
A: Email artistalley[at]fanime.com to be put onto the mailing list.
#16
i did exactly what phr34kish stated. this is my first AA, and i was able to find the link in multiple places. i don't know anyone on the staff. i never got any of this so called "insider" knowledge. i think the first come first serve is totally fair.

fanime is a popular convention. not everyone is going to get a table. deal with it, and next year when AA registration comes around don't just "sit there on a broken website wondering when registration would go up", and do something about it. it was NOT hard to find the link, as long as you were proactive.

sorry if i sound mean here. i'm really not, but you shouldn't go blaming people for something you are upset about. i tried really hard to get the table, and i'm really angry you seem to think that everyone who got a table has "insider" knowledge. 8I

i agree with phr34k, nionio, fidgey, and oniko.

this was my first time trying to register for artists alley and i managed to figure it out. the main site crashed, because people were bombarding it. there was no favoritism here. i had to go find out what was going on myself, i couldn't just sit there refreshing for the what, 6 hours the link wasn't up. i don't think the staff were unfair in posting the link on other sites.

it would have been even more unfair if they decided to wait until the main site was fixed and only posted it the time that it actually went up this year (like, that afternoon/evening?) there would have been wayyy more complaints, i think. most people were able to find the reg. link quite easily. don't blame the staff. they have been more than helpful to me, and they are trying their best. 8'I

good luck in the drawing, though. ;o;'''

haha! looks like a LOT of us are first timers!
/high5

blue i think you should print around 5-10 copies of each print, depending on how popular you think it will be. it's hard to guess, but in case you do run out really quickly on the 1st or 2nd day, locate a place where you can quickly make some more copies. XD if you have friends who have AA'd before, ask them, since i'm totally new too and AHHH scared i won't sell anything XD

zully, the table measurements are given in the FAQ, and i'd imagine that you would need ~3 feet extra on each side in order to make the cloth touch the floor. but i'm not 100% sure, since this is my first time too. is it a good idea to get a tablecloth?

what are some ways to make your table stand out more? i can't afford PVC pipes (and i don't have enough prints to hang on them anyways LOL). i have some buttons though. how should i go about displaying my 2 or 3 prints and buttons? XD

If you have any questions they also respond super fast via email.

You talk about us like we aren't right HERE right NOW reading your reply.... :P
heehee... whoops

you kind of rock. and all the other AA staff too.
/pets

mist: don't lose hope! i like the stuff you're gonna sell :D ahhh i have to figure out more stuff to draw ;n;
#20
well we might be selling similar things, but i don't think we are splitting whatever we earn equally in half or whatever.
and she goes to berkeley and i go to santa clara university, and she probably won't be coming back for a couple of weeks, so we'll probably have to fill out the form separately anyways. (unless she comes back next week and i move my appointment to then, and we can get the permit together/share) augh such a hassle, and so confusing! ;n;

as always thanks for the quick response ewu :]

hachi: good luck! i was number 237, so they are slowly but surely approving the AA tables! c: if you have any questions they also respond super fast via email.
