I'll probably go again as Coco; assuming my costume still fits. Might make a few new accessories if I have time.

Whelp. They gave me a 1-18 date.... Guess I'm prob not getting a room. O:

^You're not that weird actually. I've always had a fascination with languages, their structures, etc etc. I used to be able to often tell most Latin languages about and sometimes meanings based on their root.

Along similar lines, I love code languages. I love secret messages, passages, hidden things, etc etc. I used to love to write messages to friends in code. Such as runes, angelic, etc etc. I even used love to play those puzzle games where you cracked codes. I was pretty good at them at one point.

Registration / Re: Fan Name Issue?

Same thing here as well. I believe it was also "@@UDF1" in the email but on the confirmation screen it was correct.
I'm guessing it was a glitch error in the matrix code. As much as it is amusing for us all to belong to some elite sci-fi designation or something, I'd much prefer my fan name be correct and not to have to deal with line con.

Registration / Re: Fan Names on Badges?

I think it was happening quite a bit actually. I caught the misprint on mine (the put my real name instead of my fan name) because I noticed someone ahead of me having their badge fixed.

From what I heard (staff can correct me) was that it wasn't fanime that changed companies. That it was CMR that dropped out a few weeks before con; leaving fanime to fend for itself.

That and one of the staff jinxed themselves by setting up a "fake" line.

And there was a pre-test on thurs. I personally suspect computers were turned off that weren't supposed to be turned off. >.>;

The dropping on fan names on badges was a little weird. I'm not sure what happened there. I had to get mine fixed.

My only peeve was that the shuttle didn't run earlier and made it hard for Doubletree & other hotel con-goers to line up earlier than 4pm. The staff at the Doubletree also had no clue (on thurs.) whether fanimecon attendees could pick their badge up there. I was told I had to go over to the convention center.

I thought overall swap meet went fairly well both days. However, I do have a few points I'd like to mention.

1. Increase space between sellers.
I still think that there should be more space between sellers. Although I would like better use of that space in the tent, I understand staff's reasoning for not allowing spaces beyond a certain point. Some areas got very crowded and hard to maneuver. I think that a (at least) 4ft gap between sellers would be awesome. More would be better.

2. Maybe supply tables for swap meet?
There was several times that I was nearly pushed over onto someone's items. (Not all of us are in peak physical shape. I have a weak hip.) I wouldn't want to have to pay for their broken items and the person who pushed me would likely be long gone.

3. Limit the number of buyers allowed in at any given time.
Again... too many people making it hard to maneuver and look at things.

As for sellers re-selling merch; that always has happened with swap meet. It is normal. Just because it is swap meet doesn't mean that the items have to be old or used. The items can be newer items. Though, I think sellers that also have a booth in dealer's hall shouldn't be allowed.

So long cheapest con meal option~ We will miss you. Especially your dollar menu when our wallets have been decimated.

There is also Peanuts on San Fernando St. but it is a bit of a walk. They serve hamburgers, sandwiches, and other stuffs.

I'm hoping for more than one artist, myself. I've suggested quite a few, already, though. (^^)"

There will be, there always is if you haven't been to musicfest berfore
Dude, I've been going to Musicfest since my first Fanime in 2010. XDD But, if you didn't attend it last year, there was only one artist as opposed to the usual two. XD
Occasionally when there is a very big guest, there is only one. I believe 2008 also only had one; unless my love for An Cafe made me overlook the other one... -.-;

I'll probably bring my Rose or Elize.

I could possibly bring my Magical Amber if this happens. >.<

Sorry for reviving an old topic.

I'm still looking for pics of one of my costumes from 2014.
It was this one:

I was wearing a pink wig and had a giant broom for part of the day.
I believed I had cosplayed it on Sat.

Thanks in advance.

Next year, all fake guns have to be brightly colored. The new California law takes effect January 1, 2016.

CA penal code sec. 20175, permitted colors for fake guns: "The entire exterior surface of the imitation firearm is white, bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, bright pink, or bright purple, either singly or as the predominant color in combination with other colors in any pattern, or the entire device is constructed of transparent or translucent material that permits unmistakable observation of the device's complete contents. Merely having an orange tip as provided in federal law and regulations does not satisfy this requirement. The entire surface must be colored or transparent or translucent."

Reading over the text of the law and after looking at a post made to the Fanime Facebook page it looks like this does not apply to Fanime as it qualities as an exception under section 20175 item g "The imitation firearm is used at a fair, exhibition, exposition, or other similar activity for which a permit has been obtained from a local or state government." So really the key item to note here is that *hint to staff* FANIME WILL HAVE TO OBTAIN A PERMIT!! *hint to staff* (Which hopefully they will do so, or notify us in some other official capacity what impact this will have on the convention)
Actually, does the convention or the individual w/ the imitation firearm have to get the permit?

And does this apply only to imitation firearms or gun-shaped props made out of foam?

Edit:
I forgot about this one because I don't really attend it anymore... so mine is based off of past years and what I hear. From what I've heard, it hasn't changed.

Cosplay Spectacular

  • I never particularly cared for how skits and certain walk-ons were mixed. I think the ones showing off their costumes & singing should be part of a separate event. I'm talking the individual ones (not the group ones.) I used to go for the skits and only the skits. I'm ok with singing if it is part of a skit but I don't think they should allow "I think I can sing so I wanna show off" individuals. Honestly, they should be taking part in karaoke not masquerade. Or maybe Stage Zero.
  • At least make the costume thing a separate event... it doesn't do well on such as large stage and I think would do better in more of a cat-walk/fashion show setting. Have these people sign up for a "Cosplay Fashion show" instead. Plus, it gives you another event at fanime.
  • Judging: I have no first hand experience with this but I've heard judging is rigged & biased. I think it should either be done by an independent party or an audience vote. We don't need to know the results right away; the fact that they already know who won just shortly after the show ends just screams "fake." We the audience aren't dumb and know the results aren't true.
  • You know what... make the results a separate thing. If it isn't a audience vote, make it into a panel or event where it is one of those over the top judging shows. Where the judges have to explain what is great or bad about a skit.
Also, I don't think singing skits have been allowed since at least 2009 (I seem to recall some live audio in 2008?).  The rule's always been pre-recorded audio.  For some reason, even though it was explicitly against the rules, some skits were allowed to do so anyway. Don't ask me why.

On your judging suggestions though - As somebody who competes and does attend these things, I'm certain that what you hear about judging is hearsay.  There is a separate panel doing judging.  I have a lot of problems with Cosplay Spectacular this year, and the judging is not one of them. Masquerade staff does not judge these things - it's an outside panel, although they do often repeat (I think Wayne Kaa's local).  Wayne Kaa's from ACparadise, I believe, and he's been judging at least since 2009 when I was competing.  This year, the cosplay GOH was one of the judges (as it should be).  I don't have any issue with the panel.

Additionally, one reason judging doesn't take as long as you might expect is because all the workmanship judging is done outside of the main show.  It's not like the judges are doing their craftsmanship evaluation when the competitor is onstage.  If the judges have a sheet where they score performances as they perform, judging is a simple matter of tallying points.  And announcing in the same event makes sense because that way you have the competitors in their winning costumes for publicity photos.  And this is still a costume competition, even if skits are involved, so that part should absolutely not go away.
Wow... I think it has been longer than I thought since I last attended Masquerade. I must be basing things off stuff prior to 2009. -.-; The years have really flown by. I guess judging has maybe changed.

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Peace Bonding ideas
June 03, 2015, 02:37:39 PM
I honestly think it (& cosplay hangout) should open earlier on all days. I think it was open early when I did peace-bonding on Sun. I also start early (6am) but I was able to get in & out on the day I had props so I didn't have issues with Rovers.

Though I'm of a mind that they should let things slide if they know peace-bonding isn't open yet. Especially if it is the 1st day, like in your case.
