General Anime Chat / Yaoi opinions??
June 09, 2004, 07:47:19 AM
Goodness no.  My ex-boyfriend is a career military man and wanted to go.  He got sent off to do something that weekend and couldn't make it.  But questioned me about every second and wants to attend this year...but they shipped him to Maine.  He's still asking for leave that weekend though.

I've never seen the women at Y-con treating any attending male poorly.  Usually, men get a bit drooled over.  But don't let that scare you.  If you're uncomfortable with women adoring you, just say so.  They'll back off.   :)

Honestly, Y-con is meant to be a fun convention and all over 18 are welcome.  A variety of items are sold in the dealer's room, including stuff guys might like.  In general, the people are respectful and fun.  (But you know a couple of jerks have to attend every convention.  Do you think the jerks of the world have some sort of organization that assigns members to different fun places?   )  I bring several men with me every year and every year they have come home and convince more to go the next year.  There are about 10 different guys trying to get time off their jobs and save up money to attend this year's....and I started with just 1 guy.

General Anime Chat / Yaoi opinions??

Originally, yaoi and yuri actually did mean there would be sex.  The terms used for just people in love were Shounen Ai and Shoujo Ai.  (Hope I didn't mangle the words too badly.)  However, here as in Japan, yaoi and yuri are becoming catch all phrases.  IE...everything having to do with 2 guys gets lumped in with yaoi and the same for yuri.

You can't go into too many manga stores and ask for the shounen ai section....they'll just lead you to the yaoi section.  Same with doujinshi stores.  I guess it's just easier to lump them together.  But it makes it harder to shop if  you just looking for something sweet and romantic.

General Anime Chat / Yaoi opinions??

Actually, there are many straight pairings that seem forced to me.  Especially in video games.  You play up to half the game and they are just friends and companions, nothing more...and that is made very clear...then you suddenly hit 50% of the game and BAM....they're in love.  WTH?

And why does Ranma stay with Akane?  Talk about abusive relationships.  Yeah, yeah, comedy...but she still treats him very poorly and he's always running around risking his life for her.  Sigh.  Seems ridiculous.  Had to stop watching the series.

Sure, there are straight pairings that make sense.  Tenchi and Ryoko...did I spell her name right?  This is one of my favorites.

And as for why men don't like yaoi....it's a very complex psychological question.  Many theories exist...including one that claims gay men threaten straight men's ideas about their sexuality.  Others feel it makes men uncomfortable to think about men being submissive or allowing another to be the one with the power.  Another group of thought is that all people are born bisexual and we are trained from birth to only like one group and think of the other as unacceptable.  And those are just the TIP of the iceberb.  Plenty of study has been done about why people enjoy yaoi, yuri, hentai,  or dislike it.  Of course, none of the studies...except the hentai one....get much press.  You really have to look to find the studies and results.  And be warned, many of the studies about yaoi are done by men and sometimes their results are insulting and degrading...and skewed if you look at their research methods.

Actually, all the Gundam series seem interconnected.  Not by universe, but all seem to have elements or references to at least 1 Gundam series.  It's been a while since I watched them though.  Picked up Gundam Seed but haven't watched it yet.  Was too busy with B'tX and Hundred Stories...not mention keeping up with Naruto and One Piece.  Sigh, so much anime, so little time.  Naruto has a movie out this summer!  And One Piece movie 5 was incredible.  0083 and Wing have my favorite music from all the series, however.

I'll go back and rewatch the series again.  I shouldn't let all the new pretties keep me from forgetting the awesome place they came from.  Thank you for reminding me!  Sigh, not going to get any sleep this weekend.

Forgot one other thing, there are plenty of rabid fangirls on all sides of the series.  Plenty of times, rabid hentai fangirls will pair Trowa with Catherine...which is gross as that's his sister.  Or Ed with the girl who repairs his arm...forgot her name.  Should this pairing be acceptable because it is a guy and a girl?  It has the same age objection.

If you don't like a certain kind of story or merchandise, why not avoid it?  I find almost all hentai dull as heck.  A few series are fun, but I've found most aren't something I enjoy.  Solution:  I don't watch, read, etc. hentai.  Of course, if a friend recommends it, I'll give the title a shot.  But normally, I just don't go there.  I wouldn't tell my friends they're wrong for liking hentai or even yuri.  It's not my thing and I leave it at that.  They give me the same respect.

And why should someone writing Relena and Heero be a bother? Or Heero and Duo?  Kakashi and Iruka?  Or...heck...name a fictional pairing.  I know the story is pure fantasy.  So are many hentai, yaoi, and yuri fics, pics, etc.  It doesn't detract from my enjoying the series and I can't understand why it should.  If I don't like that sort of thing, I just don't read it, watch it, or buy it.

Actually, Gundam Wing has no official pairings.  The author himself stated he never wrote it with anyone in mind for anyone else.  In fact, in an interview, he was told about people writing Quatre and Trowa as a couple.  He laughed and said that if they wanted to see that, it was fine with him, but he hadn't written anyone to be paired with anyone else.
